Bodega Barrero Gabriela Manzanilla 375mlI love Manzanilla, and I often drink it when I’m out and about… Salty, nutty, chamomile, sourdough bread before it hits the oven, a light honey and mint thing too, lemon zest and green olives. It’s dry and nutty, distinctly saline, fine chalky texture, green olive brine and pistachio, with a tangy, zesty and nutty finish of excellent length. It’s fresh and sharp, (as it should be), but also a little wild, and gee, it’s a very good expression of Manzanilla. The crunch on the finish seals it. Yes. Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay 2024Juicy white fruit, grapefruit, aniseed, a little struck match, almond paste, cinnamon and clove spice. It’s packed with flavour, white nectarine and nutty spicy characters, a flinty grip to texture, quite some intensity and power here, and in some respects it seems more Beechworth than Yarra, or so I think. Pear and citrus, lime rind, with excellent length of flavour. It’s elemental as at now, and a little raw, though I reckon it will deliver with a couple of years in bottle. It’s a cracking release. Holm Oak Protege Pinot Noir 2024like this style of pinot. Built for drinkin' not thinkin' and one which will take a chill in the fridge should the mercury dictate such an action. First Drop Mothers Milk Shiraz 20212021 was a fine vintage in the Barossa. There is no doubt that this wine will improve but damn it's delicious now. Deep plum and cherry fruits, plenty of spicy depth with hints of licorice, dark chocolate and earth. It’s been a while between milks here at TWF, the last one reviewed was the 2017.Dark cherry, blackberry and blueberry, kind of like a pie of those fruits, with a little spicy crust, and gentle tarry earthiness. This is really good Barossa shiraz. It has all that Barossa charm with satsuma plumb, sweet blackberry conserve and hints of maraschino cherry too, while staying vibrant and lifted. Plenty of depth and concentration on the pallet and it doesn't shy away from its origins but it does it deftly by remaining light on its feet, cut with fine tannin and that fans out gently into subtle, chocalaty, framing oak. This sparkling Burgundy (not to be confused with the old term for Aussie sparkling red) is made entirely from Chardonnay and, honestly, it's a mystery as to how something this good comes at this price. The wine is produced by an estate which is over 100 years old, from premium vineyards and spent 9 months in bottle developing a gentle complexity before release. Light, crisp and fun, it's a fizz which won't break the bank and seriously over delivers.
OK so its not the usual Champs-Élysées finish and this stage isn't even the finish line but we have to have a sparkling at some point. Wirra Wirra Farmer's Heart Grenache 2023This came off mainly old vines, with 74% 95 years of age or more; matured in older oak. Ripe, but a product of the cool year, this drinks towards mid-weight, with strawberry, wild raspberry, sour cherry, damson, pomegranate and medicinal herbs coiled into a thoughtful and intricate warp and weft of tannin. There's a pleasing sour-fruited tension to this, which complements the grip, the combination aching for food. The ripeness is à point, the structure bravely savoury and compelling. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2021The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.
They have done it again! This is my go to white for summer with a lovely lemony, floral lilt and powdery, perfumed nose. Gentle and bright with clean and crisp flavours of orchard fruits and white nectarine. Its uncomplicated and delicious with clean, crunchy fruits and a zippy, minerally finish. Ridiculous value. Always a very nice wine, and great value too.
Cherry, almond, aniseed, a smattering of dried herbs, maybe lavender. It’s medium-bodied, kind of juicy, kind of savoury, there’s some strawberry in with cherry, some grainy grip to tannin, slightly ferrous, gently bitter with amaro, and the finish is fresh and pretty long. It’s maybe a little more crunchy and herbal than some vintages, and yet, it still lays on the charm. Nice. I do like a wine that doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than a great drink. Amen Break Cabernet Franc 2021There's certainly a bustle in the hedgerow here, with blackberry, black raspberry, leaf, dried roses and pencils. Medium-bodied, cool acidity, a distinctly 'mineral' feel, intense small berried dark fruit, graphite tannin, a little sundried tomato and raspberry pip, and a spicy and gently bitter amaro/sappy finish of excellent length. Rock of Wisdom Superfly Red 2021We love the Superfly range from Rock of Wisdom. These are meant to be no mess, no fuss, easy drinking juicy wines and they have well and truly nailed the brief! Minimal intervention is the name of the game here but done thoughtfully and with panache.
This is a MGS blend and the little extra of dollop mataro brings a nice earthy hit the otherwise bight and bubby fruit. This just leaps out of the glass with gleaming red fruits and plenty of sweet spice goodness. So much energy and lift, everything feels so fresh with lots of crunchy fruit framed by the gentlest kiss of oak. So sluggable!

Toma Tinto Tempranillo Grenache 2021The Toma Tinto is made by the legends at Bodegas Nekeas. While they are kinda Garnacha experts they are also bloody good at making wine. So, they didn't break too far from what they know best with this 50/50 garnacha tempranillo blend and they delivered a thirst quenching, showstopping bbq stunner here. Incredibly the winery have sourced fruit from several high altitude vineyards in Navarra exposed to the cooling reaches of the Pyreneese mountains and breezes of the Atlantic ocean.
Black raspberry, bing cherry, some red licorice a little sweet spice and a menagerie of amaro like spices and herbs. There is a lovely waft of charry earth that sets of the sweet fruited nose and gives it real interest. A lovely combo dark, dry herbs, crushed berries and an earthy note that trails off on the close. Looks a good chunk more serious than the label might suggest. Great stuff

Silky fruit profile, packed with fruit, cut with some crunchy tannin too to keep it all humming along. We have stocked almost every vintage of this wine since it started coming into the country and there is a reason why... its delicious!
A 50/50 blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha grown on the north-facing slopes of Valdizarbe in DO Navarra. The two varieties are made separately with cold maceration for about 5 days, followed by at least 10 more at fermentation temperature, which never exceeds 28ºC. A bright 'Joven' style wine, Toma Tinto marries the cherry of Tempranillo and the purple vibrancy of Garnacha. Its aromatic profile is all about bell peppers, squishy red fruits and spice while the palate is rounded and succulent.
