Moet & Chandon Brut Rose NV

(roughly 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, with 9 g/l dosage; LAH9V): Dark, vivid pink. Ripe red berries, rose oil and tangerine on the nose, plus a subtle note of toasty lees. Bitter cherry and berry skin flavors give way to softer raspberry in the middle, with a tangy blood orange nuance adding cut and lift. Packs a punch but shows very good clarity and delineation, finishing round, smooth and quite long. JOSH REYNOLDS, 2015

Pale orange. Smoky red berries, toasty lees and orange zest on the highly perfumed nose. Pliant, penetrating redcurrant and blood orange flavors are sweetened by a touch of honey and pick up smokiness with air. Deep but dry, even a bit uncompromising in a positive way. The red berry quality comes back on the finish, which shows very good clarity, lift and refreshing bitterness. JOSH RAYNOLDS, Vinous Media

  3. Larmandier Bernier Rose de Saignee Brut 1er Cru NV
Larmandier Bernier Rose de Saignee Brut 1er Cru NV
Disgorged September 2021. The Rosé de Saignée is drawn mostly from what are thought to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Vertus (45 years old), and one of this village’s very last 100% Pinot vineyards. In fact, the vineyard is a co-planted blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Gris, with both varieties contributing to this wine. The grapes are allowed to macerate for a period before the juice is drawn off, providing the colour and much of the body and flavour for the wine. This saignée technique is now rare in Champagne, primarily as it is a demanding method of vinification and requires grapes with an excellent degree of maturity. Most rosé in Champagne is made by the addition of a little red wine. Vive la différence! Bibendum

  4. Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve Brut NV Magnum
Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve Brut NV Magnum
Based on the 2019 vintage and disgorged this year with four grams per liter dosage, Péters's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grande Réserve wafts from the glass with aromas of peaches, pastry cream, dried fruits, citrus oil and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and vinous, it's racy and concentrated, with a chiseled profile and a long, saline finish. The fine base vintage marks this out as a particular success. WILLIAM KELLEY, Wine Advocate

The NV Brut Cuvée de Réserve Grand Cru is open, effusive and a real delight to taste. Soaring aromatics and soft curves give this 2019-base Champagne tons of sheer appeal. Apricot, tangerine peel, spice and dried flowers abound in this racy, open-knit Champagne. The Cuvée de Réserve is rarely this charming at this stage. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

  5. Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Vrigny
    Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Vrigny
As always, this is 100% Pinot Meunier from a single 40-year-old, south facing vineyard in Vrigny, a commune located on the Petite Montagne de Reims (very close to Gueux, where Jérôme Prévost is based). Straight Pinot Meunier remains a rarity in Champagne and in Egly’s hands it is something truly unique. Low yields, old vines and ripe fruit make this one of the most intense, layered and opulent Meunier wines kicking around. Bottled without filtration, the dosage for this bottling was a tiny one gram per litre.

Based on the 2018 vintage, Egly's newly disgorged NV Brut Premier Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny bursts with aromas of white peach, crisp orchard fruit, apple blossom and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, ample and vibrant, with a pure, seamless profile and a precise, saline finish, it's an immensely charming wine produced from Pinot Meunier vinified in tank. (a 50/50 blend of Avize and Mesnil-sur-Oger Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Mailly, Bouzy and Ambonnay; around 10 g/l dosage; L33830X01300): Pale gold. Vibrant, mineral-laced citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of buttered toast and honey. Toasty orange and pear flavors are braced by juicy acidity, picking up a suggestion of chamomile with air. Finishes dry and precise, with repeating mineral and toast notes. Larmandier Bernier Latitude Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs NV
The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Latitude 1er Cru is a gorgeous wine, and a terrific introduction to the Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes. Bright and floral at the outset, the Latitude also possesses terrific depth and tons of resonance that carries through to the finish. In this tasting, the Latitude is just stellar. All the elements fall into place effortlessly in a Champagne that captures the essence of Chardonnay in this southern part of Vertus, where the wines tend to be ample in feel. ANTONIO GALLONI

Agrapart Terroirs Blanc de Blanc Brut Grand Cru NV
The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs is a very pretty wine among the entry-level selections in this range. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the Terroirs bristles with energy, the blend of fruit from sites in Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry works so well here. Citrus, white flowers, white pepper and crushed rocks add a super appealing upper register. This release is a blend of equal parts 2016 and 2015, with about 25% of the wine done in neutral oak. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Best of all, the Terroirs is a superb value. ANTONIO GALLONI,Vinous.com

  9. Andre Clouet Grande Reserve Brut NV
Andre Clouet Grande Reserve Brut NV

Incredible value for a blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir) grower Champagne from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy. It shows gorgeous aromas of stone fruit, citrus and strawberry, with complex brioche nuances, remarkable balance, ongoing elegance and a rich, refined, persistent finish. DECANTER

Release after release, year after year, I have always marvelled at the lemon blossom freshness that Clouet manages to capture in pinot noir from two of Champagne's most powerful terroirs.  Here it is again, in a captivating interplay of fleshy mirabelle plums, white peaches, crunchy golden delicious apples, and even a hint of pepper.  Wild honey and mixed spice join the maelstrom along the way, gliding obediently into a well-defined finish of soft minerality and integrated dosage.  TYSON STELZER, The Champagne Guide

The NV Brut Grande Reserve offers up layers of mineral-infused red fruits on a silky, mid-weight frame, with gorgeous length and a refined, subtle mousse. This impeccable, elegant wine shows terrific overall balance as well as complexity. I loved it. ANTONIO GALLONI

The effusive nose of candied citrus, ripe pear and brioche pulls you into this fresh and creamy champagne that hits all the pleasure buttons for a non-vintage Brut. Then the chalky freshness at the finish pulls you back for another sip. Excellent balance! 100% pinot noir. JAMES SUCKLING

The NV Brut Grand Réserve Grand Cru is a pure Pinot Noir from Bouzy. It's pure, fresh, fine and aromatic on the nose and round and delicate on the palate. The fruit-intense finish is chalky-mineral and stimulatingly fresh in its salty finesse and elegant yeastiness. Nice lemon juice flavors give an extra kick of refreshment. This is a picture-book NV Brut. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

The latest release of André Clouet's NV Brut Grand Réserve Grand Cru is showing well, exhibiting a nicely integrated bouquet of red apple, ripe citrus fruit, honeycomb and blanched almonds, followed by a medium to full-bodied, enveloping palate with a fine mousse, ripe but racy acids and an elegant, understated profile, concluding with a well-defined finish. 10. Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV
    Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV
Pol Roger's infamous 'White Foil' is an attractive and refreshing aperitif style, as clean, crisp and well constructed as ever.  A sneak preview of the pristine 2008 base on the eve of its release is elegantly refreshing, harmonising lemon, white peach and nectarine purity of fruit and restraint.  Hints of apple and nougat glide over an elegant structure of soft, mineral presence.  The 2007 base has taken on a nutty, creamy persona, accented by subtle spice, showing a little more richness as it approaches the end of its run, yet retaining all of its fresh citrus energy.  While disgorgement dates are not marked on bottles, the packaging date on the carton is about three months after disgorgement.
TYSON STELZER, The Champagne Guide 2014-2015

  11. Andre Clouet Silver Brut Nature NV
Andre Clouet Silver Brut Nature NV

Jean-Francois Clouet's zero-dosage ideal is realised with magnificent clarity here.  Such is the concentration and richness of his pinot noir that it has absolutely no need for any sweetness.  The bouquet is delightfully fresh, lifted, pure and expressive, with lemon zest, yellow mirabelle plums and red apple fruits.  The palate follows impeccably, showcasing the concentration of Bouzy with exceptional purity and focus.  Its barrel work blends impeccably contributing nuances of nougat, brioche and honey.  Succulent yellow summer fruits pull seamlessly into a crunchy finish of red apple and lemon zest, concluding long and refined, with refreshingly taut acidity and soft, chalky minerality.  Classic Bouzy of the finest order. TYSON STELZER, The Champagne Guide

Light yellow-gold. A highly aromatic nose displays lemon zest, fig, pear and ginger, with a bright mineral overtone. Tangy and precise, offering a complex blend of lime, white flowers, quinine and dusty minerals. Juicy, tightly focused Champagne, with nervy acidity adding cut to a long, sappy finish. This wine reminded me a lot of an old-school Chablis. JOSH RAYNOLDS

The NV Brut Nature Silver is naturally a very focused, driven wine given the no-dosage style. This shows wonderful nuance and depth all the way through to the long finish, with bright aromas and flavors but less of the toastiness than some of the house's other wines. The mousse and finish are both utterly impeccable in their elegance. ANTONIO GALLONI

    ANDRE CLOUET (9/10)

Bouzy and Ambonnay are the epicentre of pinot noir in Champagne, and the Clouet family is the priviledged custodian of eight hectares of estate vines in the best middle slopes of both villages.  These are rich and concentrated expressions of pinot noir, wines of deep complexity, multi faceted interest and engaging character, yet with remarkable restraint and sense of control.  Recent tastings confirm my impression that this small and relatively unknown grower ranks high among Champagne's finest practitioners of pinot noir - and expresses one of the best value of all.

  15. Larmandier Bernier Longitude Blanc de Blancs NV
Larmandier Bernier Longitude Blanc de Blancs NV

A captivating wine, blended from four of chardonnay's most beguiling villages, sharing roughly the same 'Longitude.'  As always, it's the tremendous chalk minerality of these terroirs that is the most engaging, gliding long and seamless from start to finish, utterly defying the lesser 2011 base vintage in a manner that very few other growers and houses have pulled off.  Stunning purity of lemon and apple is backed by the complexity and appeal of bottle age in notes of brioche, biscuits and toast, seamlessly connected by a focused, tense acid line.  In recent tastings, notes of red apple and starfruit have begun to materialise, accurately encapsulating the subtle exoticism of Vertus.  TYSON STELZER The Champagne Guide 2016-2017

    Gosset Blanc de Blanc NV
Gosset is Champagne's oldest producer, founded in the 16th century, and this blanc de blancs takes advantage of its well-established connections by sourcing Chardonnay from 15 different villages. The base wines are aged on lees after the primary fermentation but malolactic fermentation is blocked in order to retain the house's characteristic zinginess. The result is prickly, saline, lemony and tight, with some mouth-puckering apple, citrus and herb flavours. Light and focused, there's a touch of nuttiness on the finish. A great food wine, it could do with some additional time to mellow if you plan on drinking it on its own. JAMES BUTTON, Decanter

Its specific style and colour are the result of blending in about 8% red wine mainly from the vineyard plots in Aÿ (Pierre Robert, La Pelle) and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ (Cumaine, Vaularon, Mutry).
The vines are very well sited and belong to Deutz. The red wine is made by our cellar-master.

On the palate, this is a very fresh, pure, mineral and tensioned Pinot Noir with good grip and lingering salinity and structure. Still very young, this should benefit from further bottle aging.
