  1. Bodegas de Forlong Bubuja Ancestral 2018
Bodegas de Forlong Bubuja Ancestral 2018
Marco de Jerez region, vinos de la Tierra de Cádiz
Alejandro (Alex) Narváez and Rocío Áspera are native Jerezanos and first-wave Marco de Jerez revolutionaries, reviving terroir and a variety of historical wine styles. It's a young project, conceived of in 2009 and producing its first bottles from the 2012 (first Tinto) and 2013 (first Blanco) harvests. It has a long gestation though: they have been a couple since they were in high school! In 2011, Rocío graduated as a Master of Warm Climate Winemaking from Cádiz University. Alejandro is half-French, and previously worked as a winemaker at Smith-Haut-Lafitte.

This is hand-picked organic Palomino grown in Pago Balbaina Alta, then given the Ancestral bubbling treatment. Not being a style supported by the DO currently, as with the other Forlong wines, it's labed Vino de Tierra de Cadiz.

Fermentation is the same for vinosity and for adding bubbles: the wine is bottled before the alcoholic fermentation has converted all of the sugar. This starts in tank and finishes in bottle. 8 months' later is a hand disgorgement and the bottles are refilled with the same wine. 12% abv. THe SPANISH ACQUISITION

  2. Vina Olabarri Rioja Viura Blanco 2020
Vina Olabarri Rioja Viura Blanco 2020

Olabarri's wines break away from the traditional, oak-aged oxidative style that focuses on a pleasing natural depth without obvious winemaking to force style and flavour from bland grapes. Cool stainless steel fermentation, wild yeast, free run juice with minimal lees/skin contact.

A nose of jackfruit flesh, curry leaf, a bit spicy and lemon fresh. The palate is nicely phenolic, without excess, and with a lovely clairty to the fruit. A little bit of richness and perfectly savoury, it’s filled out with spiced fruit acid and feel of the chalky limestone in which it’s grown and a dash of grilled nuts. Perfectly midweight, nicely rounded, it sits gently with presence, freshness edging and shaping.

  3. Palacios Remondo 'La Vendimia' Garnacha Tempranillo 2020
Palacios Remondo 'La Vendimia' Garnacha Tempranillo 2020

This estate is the home of Alvaro Palacios, the famed Priorat producer. Having formally departed Alfaro in 1989 in order to set up shop in Priorat, Alvaro 'returned' in 2000 following the death of his father, Jose, who set up the family business in 1945 and ran it from then on.

Under Jose, Palacios Remondo was a conventional Rioja of industrially-farmed Tempranillo expressed within the Crianza-Reserva-etctera model of production. In the years under Alvaro's guidance, the vineyards and wines have undergone extraordinary change. Nowadays the vineyards are bio-dynamically grown low-crop organic plantings of local Garnacha genetics, with a scattering of Viura.  Any Tempranillo in Palacios Remondo wines is purchased from good growers near Haro on the Ebro's north shore.

    Telmo Rodriguez Lanzaga 2018
This is so beautifully balanced with bright fruit, creamy and crunchy acidity and delicate tannins. Full and compressed with very polished tannins that go on for minutes. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

Lanzaga a village wine, combining 35 plots, handled separately and blended after selection. Aged a year or so: half the wine matures in relatively neutral 1500-2000 litre wood; the rest in a mix of 225 and 600 litre barrels (at most 10% new oak).

  5. Alegre Valganon Garnacha de dos pueblo 2020
Alegre Valganon Garnacha de dos pueblo 2020
This is a masterpiece of delicacy; open-hearted and lingering beautifully.
It smells of fennel, radish and quinine bark with a sweet-spice-squeak. Lean and lipstick-kissy, fine wild fennel sweetness repeats in the acid squeak at end.
It has excellent ripeness in harmony with fine structure and incredible freshness, but is super-lean in glycerol terms, and wonderfully fresh. SCOTT WASLEY

It's beautiful and poised. With air the aromatics soar, the florals and bright blue fruits reach out from the glass beckoning.
It feels soft and glossy on the palate but through that there is a vein of rocky minerality and super filigreed tannins hold the wines shape and draw out the flavour.
Slowly building and slowly finishing. It's long and there is so much woven through this gorgeous wine that I could taste and smell it all day long.
I believe it will age incredibly well on the pure harmony it displays now.
    This is genuinely beautiful. ROSCOE

  6. Biurko Gorri Tempranillo 2021
    Biurko Gorri Tempranillo 2021
Biurko Gorri sit in the far north-eastern corner of appellation Rioja, on the slopes of Monte Yoar in eastern Sierra Cantabria. These are organically grown vineyards lying in a rolling landscape at over 600m on poor limestone-clay soils. Bargota have been certified organic since 1998, hand-picking all their fruit.

That really is incredible to think and the quality shines here. This puts a lot of bottlings at the same or more to shame.

Soft and mineral, with a mix of red and dark fruit in a floral register. Open and expressive, with nutty tannins and a lick of spicy acidity. There are purple and blueberry aromas with savoury elements of dried lavender, heather and shaved nutmeg. The palate is clean, with refreshing natural acidity. Fruitfulness lengthens to a long, savoury earthen finish and the chalk soil is reflected in fine tannin.

  8. Artuke Pies Negros Tempranillo Rioja 2021
Artuke Pies Negros Tempranillo Rioja 2021
Artuke make this wine from five separate plots, planted on limestone and clay at around 550 metres altitude dotted around the town of Abalos, just to the south of their 'Grand Cru' Escolladero site. It bursts with freshness and lively acidity, with a core of cool blackberry fruit. There's plenty of structure here too, thanks to the proximity of limestone to the top soil in foothills of the Cantabrian mountains which shows the serious, age-worthy Rioja side of Rioja Alavesa, even in the modern-terroist frame. 9. Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2021
Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2021
Finca de Los Locos is an old, single vineyard wine grown high on slopes of the Cantabrian mountians north of the town of Banos. Arturo and Kike de Miguel’s grandfather planted the vines in the 1950s, though other farmers of the day thought he was mad to work such a difficult, rock-strewn slope when so much land was available on the flat plains of the Rioja Valley floor. Sixty years later however, this single parcel is consistently producing some of the finest examples of terroir-focused wine in the region. Made with 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, Finca de Los Locos is black-fruited, decidedly cool climate and massively over delivers for the price. ALIMENTARIA

  10. Toma Tinto Tempranillo Grenache 2021
    Toma Tinto Tempranillo Grenache 2021
The Toma Tinto is made by the legends at Bodegas Nekeas. While they are kinda Garnacha experts they are also bloody good at making wine. So good that importer Will Dyer of La Carta wines asked them if they could make him something special just for the Aussie markers and something special they did.

So, they didn't break too far from what they know best with this 50/50 garnacha tempranillo blend and they delivered a thirst quenching, showstopping bbq stunner here. Incredibly the winery have sourced fruit from several high altitude vineyards in Navarra exposed to the cooling reaches of the Pyreneese mountains and breezes of the Atlantic ocean.

Black raspberry, bing cherry, some red licorice a little sweet spice and a menagerie of amaro like spices and herbs. There is a lovely waft of charry earth that sets of the sweet fruited nose and gives it real interest. A lovely combo dark, dry herbs, crushed berries and an earthy note that trails off on the close. Looks a good chunk more serious than the label might suggest. Great stuff

  11. Bodegas Care Tinto Sobre Lias Garnacha Syrah 2022
Bodegas Care Tinto Sobre Lias Garnacha Syrah 2022
Bodegas Care is a young but quality conscious operation making some absolutely cracking drops from in and around their home in Aragon northwest Spain. With state of the art facilities and vineyards sitting at 600 - 800 metre they are capturing the best of the region in a pure and fresh style that avoids the tricked-up commercial styles that often make their way overseas instead relying on high quality fruit and quality driven production.

Intense bramble and wild forest fruits on the nose with lifted violet and gentle white pepper spice that accents the sweet fruits perfectly. Juicy mulberry and smashed blackberry with a little ferrous earthiness that offset the sweet fruits. Lush and easy going but still with a little snap.of acidity to round it all out nicely.

  12. Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2020 375ml
Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2020 375ml
Medium ruby hue, with a bright and racy nose that’s full of pretty berries, redcurrants, fresh strawberries and potpourri. Medium-bodied and naturally juicy on the palate, showing lots of crunch and drinkability. Fresh, transparent and silky. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

2020 is a powerful vintage; it's structured and textured, the oak is very nicely integrated (12 months in barrel, but the powerful wine absorbed it completely), and it's powerful with 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.55, a little darker than in previous years. The tannins are very fine with a subtle chalky texture. There were 2,319 barrels that resulted in 672,000 bottles, 10,000 magnums and some larger and smaller formats. It was bottled from April 2022.
