  1. Zind Humbrecht Zind 2019
    Zind Humbrecht Zind 2019
STAGE 7 -  MOUNTAIN - TOMBLAINE > LA SUPER PLANCHE DES BELLES FILLES 176.5 KM

Zind Humbrecht is one of the unquestioned kings of aromatic whites. His ceaseless drive to create the worlds greatest examples of his varieties is nothing short of remarkable as are the resulting offerings. A devoted proponent of Biodynamics, a gifted presenter and communicator and a towering figure of modern wine, the first Frenchman to be awarded the MW (International Master of Wine) he has justifiably earned his reputation as one of legends of modern wine.

The Zind is one of our favourite bottlings and uses a combination of pinot gris and chardonnay from the Clos Windsbuhl grand cru vineyard. A little time in oak casks gives this a plush and round feel while the addition of gris adds some extra floral elements, spice and hit of quartzy minerality. Its dry with a chalky edge and gentle grip. Clean cut tree fruit are gently supported by oak that plays soft and subtly adding texture and weght rather then and overt oak flavours or aromas. A lip-smacking dry Alsace white that's just humming along right now.

  2. The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
Beautiful Isle Wines are a tribute to the vibrant apple crate art of Tasmania's 'Apple Isle' hey day. Based on the family estate Marions Vineyard which was once an apple and pear orchard dating back to the 1800's but no planted to a mix of classic red and white varietals.

The white is all the bits and pieces that don't quite make it into the final blends of their other wines, not because they don't make the cut but because there is a little too much here or there.

This is full of tropical fruit and peppery spice that leaps out of the glass. A touch of white flower and some lilting aromatics make it really enticing. Fleshy and plump on the palate a lovely zip of acidity rounds up all that plush fruit and gives it some nice focus. Plenty of energy on the finish.

  3. Pepe Mendoza Casa Agricola Blanco 2021
Pepe Mendoza Casa Agricola Blanco 2021
The 2021 Moscatel - Macabeo - Airén was produced with 40% Moscatel, 40% Macabeo and 20% Airén that fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and was kept with the lees until bottling. This is very floral, herbal and expressive, a blend to show the landscape, because he thinks the Moscatel is not complete enough to be bottled alone. So, this combines notes of jasmine, chamomile, fennel and grass, and all the wines fermented with indigenous yeasts. It's long and clean and has a dry, chalky finish with a saline twist. It has medium ripeness at 13% alcohol and a pH of 3.3. The whites don't go through malolactic to keep the tension and freshness, and the malic acid is not very high. The vines are in the process of being certified organic. 91 pts, LUIS GUITERREZ, Robert Parker

  4. Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2021
Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2021

The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.

They have done it again! This is my go to white for summer with a lovely lemony, floral lilt and powdery, perfumed nose. Gentle and bright with clean and crisp flavours of orchard fruits and white nectarine. Its uncomplicated and delicious with clean, crunchy fruits and a zippy, minerally finish. Ridiculous value. 5. Castera Jurancon Sec 2021
    Castera Jurancon Sec 2021
Franck Lihour is a relative newcomer with only his first vintage in 2014. But within a short amount of time, he has lifted his family's estate, Domaine Castera, to be one of the top producers of Jurançon. His ability to tame the searing acidity with concentrated fruit while keeping the wines bone dry and without ever losing any balance is exceptional. His work in the vineyard, slow & long pressing, time in old neutral oak and use of whole clusters the key to maintaining the knife edge wines he has endeared his fans with.

Waxy citrus, pear and white orchard fruit entice you in while a gentle floral lilt and softly spice nose keep you coming back for more. The palate is refined and electric, with a long, slightly leesy finish, that seems to build and build in on its self as you continue to sip it. This is at once luxurious and broad that seems to paint the flavours across your palate while sitting up, fresh and bright on a web of tightly woven acidity. Very cool!

  6. Muros Antigos Alvarinho 2021
    Muros Antigos Alvarinho 2021
Anselmo Mendes is one of the most important names in the Vinho Verde region - indeed in Portuguese wine. As well as his own labels, he is a consultant to many of the leading quintas of the Minho and beyond. He calls himself a 'student' of Alvarinho and represents the 3rd generation of Alvarinho producers. Obtaining his Masters of Oenology in Bordeaux, Anselmo brings knowledge and experience with skin contact and barrel use from his time in France. Anslemo is a massive proponent of letting the vineyard tell the story but his guiding hand lifts the fruit to a stunning level. In terms of range and price, these are the best value Vinho Verde wines in Portugal.he most premium of the Vinho Verde varieties.

So, so good! Bright orange, lemon, a hint of tropical fruit, some green herbs and a spicy-quartzy kind of thing that is so appealing. The palate follows with juicy guava, a touch of mango and delivers a power-punch of flavour yet remains incredibly bright. Anselmo has a real knack for getting plenty of ripe fruit flavour without letting it overrun his wines into the simple fruity. Rather he layers in some beautiful textural elements to counterpoint the fruit and is underpinned by a luscious minerality that is so appealing.

We were super impressed with the latest vintage here. Much more texture and weight then in previous vintage with an emphasis on phenolic grip and slippery fruit. There is lovely chalky, white pepper note on the nose with fresh nashi pear and green apple to the fore. It's a lovely ride on the palate and this skates a line for serious and textural as well as fruity and forward beautifully.

  9. Muros Antigos Vinho Verde 2021
    Muros Antigos Vinho Verde 2021
The 2021 Muros Antigos Escolha is a blend of 40% Loureiro, 40% Avesso and 20% Alvarinho, unoaked and coming in at 12.3% alcohol, plus something less than 1.5 grams of residual sugar and 6.8 grams of total acidity. A lovely blend and another fine value this year, this is bright and fresh but also surprisingly persistent without harshness. It is perfectly balanced. The Loureiro is asserting itself nicely in flavors and aromatics, making this blend extra appealing. It is very expressive, even as only a component in the blend. There is certainly reasonable concentration, but this is less about concentration than the crisp and fruity finish. To be sure, it is not terribly energetic this year, but it is harmonious and impossible to resist. It should hold a reasonable time, perhaps longer than indicated, but there is no reason to wait.
