  1. P & A Vin de France Grenache Syrah 2021
    P & A Vin de France Grenache Syrah 2021
The P & A wines are from our friend and Burgundy madman Nicolas Potel. These are the wines that epitomise the term vin-de-soif. These are absolutely gluggable, definitely chillable and straight-up delicious fair from the southern reached of France where Nicolas, via is network of winemaking legends sources fruit from top growers.

This little beauty is crafted by Potel's partner in crime Stephane Aviron who brings his consdiderable talents to the table. there is an elegance and purity to the wine with underlying terroir drive that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who tried Nicola or Stephane's wines.

Wafts of raspberries, black plums and sweet spices lure you in. The core is a vibrant and buoyant mass of black and red berries, wrapped in an elegant framework. Subtle notes of rosemary come from a thoughtful use of whole bunch. This overdelivers hands down on its humble price point, no need to second guess here. GABRIELLE POY

  3. In Praise of Shadows Sakura Rose 2024
In Praise of Shadows Sakura Rose 2024

    67 % Grenache / 33% Sangiovese

Sakura translates to Cherry Blossom, and this is a deliciously light to medium bodied style. Sangiovese offers some herbal and spicy notes through the lifted watermelon and strawberry palate. There is a flinty edge and perhaps pithiness akin to biting a ripe red delicious apple. Cool acidity balances nicely with the layers and texture from partial seasoned oak fermentation.

  4. Bleasdale The Wise One Tawny 750ml
Bleasdale The Wise One Tawny 750ml
Fruitcake aromas with attractive nutty complexity; a soft touch of rancio and rather laid-back acidity makes the wine a warm and friendly style for a cold winter's evening. JAMES HALLIDAY

Ok. A man of few words on this one but let me assure you that this is straight up, bloody delicious and yes, we agree its perfect for a cold winter eve. This hidden little beauty from Bleasdale is matured in small oak casks in the rafters of the winery's hot tin roof for a minimum of 7 years before blending. The result is a uniquely Aussie inspired tawny style that is so well priced you might as well by a six pack and sip it to your hearts contents all winter long and never feel guilty.

Rammed full of clove, five-spice. Licorice root, treacle, honey, plenty of baked walnut and edged with roasted brown sugar. There is that lovely edging of dried citrus peel and fruit cake mix too. Sweet and lush but not as cloying as you might think… don't get us wrong though, its sweet, and that's how we like it.

Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Rose 2021 375ml
Never judge a book buy it's cover right? Mostly, you see the colour of this and you at least know you are on good footing to begin with. It's pale, like a blush of peach. Properly dry with a splash of sweet citrus, mandarin, ripe red grapefruit, a just tart orange aspect and then some lovely peach notes. All this is underpinned by a bright, clear, palate cleansing freshness and a nice pithy texture that licks at the sides of your mouth. It's long and energising, it both slackens the thirst with its buoyant, uplifting feel and engages the old taste buds and sets the salivary glands quivering. Who doesn't love Rose like this? It's so enjoyable to drink. ROSCOE

  6. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

Savoury tannins and ripe black cherries with a note of liquorice prevail in this blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and the ABV is relatively high, but the wine has balance with a fresh, lifted finish. I'd decant this for lamb chops spiked with rosemary and garlic slices, barbecued if the weather allows. Its name tells us the grapes were sourced from both banks of the Rhône River. In Praise of Shadows Mankai Red Blend 2021

    Garnacha, Monastrell, Touriga, Graciano.

So much ozone, or petrichor, here, which is so appealing. Red berries, a little liquorice and spice. Medium-bodied, at most, fresh and crisp, slightly earthy, hazelnuts, spiced poached strawberry and red cherry, emery board tannin, a distinct ‘mineral’ feel, and a cool spicy/savoury finish of brightness and excellent length. So individual. So energetic. Outstanding. Get amongst it. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The name for this cracking little producer is Inspired by the Japanese literary masterpiece of the same name, In Praise of Shadows is. For Rob Mack and Brett Trewartha this is somewhat of a  philosophical wine passion project sourcing the best fruit from vineyards around McLaren Vale, many of which are certified organic and bioydnamic. Lo-fi, unfined, unfiltered, and all that jazz. Ultimately though just really flippin delicious.

    Spinifex Garcon 2022
Some people love a bit of reduction in their reds; other don’t. I’m in the former camp, and this wine plays that angle beautifully. Raspberries and rust, throws of dry spice, twiggy herb notes, licorice and that smoky, earthen, slightly burnt reductive character. The flavours come both tense and sheeted; it’s a light-ish wine of juicy, taut finesse. Pricing is spot on. This is deliciously good. Personally, in an ideal world, I’d be up to my neck in this. Spinifex Papillon 2022
I'm a huge fan of Peter Schell's Papillon, this year a blend of 87/13% cinsault/grenache. It's fragrant and pretty with a spaciousness and sense of detail that predates the majority of the wines that today present in a pleasant vin de soif style. Red fruited and spicy with notes of dried meats and citrus blossom, dried herbs and cranberry. An oh-so-easy-to-drink style with chalky tannins and red apple-like acidity. It's a ripper. 11. Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2022
    Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2022

SPECIAL VALUE - Vine Vale has a solid reputation for producing outstanding grenache. With sandy soils lying in the lee of the eastern range, the fruit produces wines of great perfume, which of course is what the variety is all about. Old vines here (1929 and 1949 plantings) and the glory of whole bunch fermentation on full display. Fragrant and great drinking with supple red cherry, dark plum and raspberry fruits cut with exotic spice, citrus blossom, Campari-esque tones, cola, gingerbread and earth. Savoury and composed with super-powdery tannins and a spicy, red-fruited exit with just a hint of roasting meats. Geez, grenache is great drinking. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY’S WINE COMPANION

Sultry little thing aren’t you! What’s that? What did you say to me? Drink another glass? I can’t, it’s a work night… Are you sure I will feel better if I do? Ok, you convinced me…

Wait, where did the bottle go? Ah Grenache, you tricked me again. I guess I should open a second, it’s still early. A little insight in to my brain.

Seriously?????though, I think bottles of this wine are prone to evaporation. It’s all too alluring with those soaring aromatics, perfumed red berries, some wild herbs, a whisp of mint some underbrush brought to you buy the 20 something percent whole bunch. Shapely and sumptuous wine that is much darker in the mouth where it builds in volume to fill the palate with creamy, sweet, succulent fruit supported by a fine network of tannins with just enough grip to keep things serious but not intrusive. Finishes more savoury and those characters come out to play a little more with some air too.

A wholly and thoroughly convincing rendition of modern Australian Grenache that over delivers in every conceivable way. Well done and thank you Yalumba. ROSCOE

  13. SC Pannell Basso Garnacha 2021
    SC Pannell Basso Garnacha 2021

A very good year for Basso. 50 year old vines.

Bright cherry, musk, lots of iron and ferrous character, exotic spice and mint. Medium-bodied, juicy fruit, but savoury, with plenty of tannin and extract, stony feel, a lot of bounce and perfume. Finish is ferrous and crisp, and pretty long. Kind of rugged, though it’s a joyous expression of Grenache. Fun times. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

A contemporary expression of Vale grenache with a whiff of gum leaf, for tradition's sake. A skirt of sandy tannins, carved from the seabed with the precision of a scalpel. Kirsch, fecund strawberry, white pepper, Seville orange and tea tree. Frisky yet ample, with the levity of drinkability the endgame despite a somewhat drying finish. NED GOODWIN, Halliday Wine Companion

We have always been a fan of the wines of the Stephen and over the years he has become more than just an acquaintance of the Prince. He has a wonderful insight into the wine world that is both pragmatic and poetic. His love of grenache is likely no surprise to those who know his wines and from his home turf in the Mclaren Vale he is master of his domaine when it comes to the varietal.

  15. Ministry of Clouds Tempranillo Grenache 2023
Ministry of Clouds Tempranillo Grenache 2023
60/40% tempranillo/grenache. From grower and estate vines with whole berry and whole bunch carbonic maceration, extended time on skins (four to five weeks), with one grenache parcel at 25 weeks; maturation in 3500 and 5000L foudre, eggs and puncheons. Tempranillo leads with cherry, anise, cola and black plum accented by spicy stem and skin notes; the grenache percolates up with wild raspberry and rosehip notes while giving the palate a more open feel, moderating its partner’s tannins through the middle, cleaning up the tail and giving this real gastronomic purpose. 16. Spinifex Grenache Gris 2023
    Spinifex Grenache Gris 2023

It’s a new plot of vineyard (on the estate) and this is the first year where there was enough crop to make/release a wine. It was fermented wild in old oak and then matured in a (not new) 1000l foudre.

Time in old oak was important here because it’s added texture to what is, at heart, a structural white wine. It’s a wine of skin and bones, stones and spices, its dryness a key part of its appeal. We’re almost into brine territory here, or stones sitting in a saline solution, perhaps. It knows what it wants, and it wants for food. This is a good, interesting wine, worth buying and drinking, and future releases will be worth following. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

It's not heavy but it's so wild with spice and so generally captivating that it's hard to put it down. This is a cracker of a wine. Red and blue berried fruit flavours, black pepper notes, a mezcal aspect and flings of roasted nuts. Capcanes Mas Donis Rosat de Garnacha 2023

A beautiful Garnatxa Tinto in miniature ... It's everything about the berry but lighter, fresher and zippier. Beautiful red fruits of the forest with an appley crunch, a light wave of Montsant's limestone soils and delicate fruit tannins in a nice buzzing herbal register ... Mas Donís pink has a lovely juicy and refreshing primary feel without any sugar heft. It fits and sits right in the middle of the palate, leaving a perfect amount of space - an invitation to be completed with riotous chat-and-chew action. Well cut with earthy acidity, the rosehip and maraschino palate is vibrant and has very neat lines.

  19. Alkina Kin Grenache 2023
    Alkina Kin Grenache 2023

There is quite a bit of buzz around for Alkina Wines. It's all about good farming and detail. It's like bonsai winemaking, three blocks of grenache on the same property, two (clay and schist) provide the flesh and power, the other, off limestone, the drive. The vinous valence here is undeniable. Spacious and filigreed with pristine red fruits, gingerbread, amaro herbs, blossom and exotic spice. Just beautifully composed with tension and transparency. DAVE RBOOKES, Halliday Wine Companion

The heart is sweet but it’s all savoury from there. Indeed such is the array that it’s hard to know where to start: sweet plum, red licorice and boysenberry move quickly towards saltbush, woodsy spice, potpourri and sweet earth. It’s juicy and lacy at once, the finish beautifully composed, the carry of the finish satisfying and then some. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  20. Tentenublo Xerico Vinaspre Rioja 2017
    Tentenublo Xerico Vinaspre Rioja 2017

The 2016 Xerico that we are offering today is an ode to the wines that Roberto's ancestors drank - Rioja without oak maturation. In place of the oak is cement and chestnut foudre's. The other connection with the past is that the wine contains 15% of the white grape Viura whilst the balance is Tempranillo.

Xerico is the name of the soil 'Xeric Torriothent'! This is a carlcareous marl soil from the Tertiary era on eroded slopes.

This wine is from three plots - El Pedrón, La Entrada and La Fuente Colas. The age of the vines range from 15 to 50 years old.

Fermentation is completed with natural yeasts in stainless steel and cement vats to retain freshness and minerality. As I mentioned above this wine doesn't see any oak and is aged for five months in cement vats and chestnut foudres.

Don't think of this as Joven style - it is much more serious.

Talk about personality. This is bunchy, meaty, floral and more, its light-but-bright fruit completely infiltrated by savouriness and smokiness and general herbal complexities. Blewitt Springs fruit off 85-year-old bush vines, fermented with 30% whole bunches, some extended skin contact, raised in puncheons, demi-muids and a 2,400-litre cask. This is all charm, but with a distinctly sophisticated elegance of delivery, with all the expected pops of red fruit – raspberry, red cherry, redcurrant, some pomegranate – conveyed with vibrancy but never confection, florals, white pepper, musk and a hint of orange peel accenting. 23. Domaine Bila Haut Banyuls 2021
    Domaine Bila Haut Banyuls 2021
Spread out on narrow and steep terraces, the Banyuls Appellation overhangs the Mediterranean sea. For more than two thousand years old, the vineyard is rooted in a stony schist soil and benefits from exceptional atmospheric conditions allowing for plush rich fruits, ripe and full of sugar but pristine and fresh. The fortification technique was devised in 1285 by Arnau de Vilanova, which stops the fermentation, and gives the Banyuls appellation there unique expression unlike anywhere else in the world.

Made from 90% of Grenache and a field blend of other grape varieties from the slopes of schisty soils coming from the Primary Era. The grapes are destemmed and crushed. The maceration is long with an addition of alcohol to favour the extraction of aromas and tannins then the wine is aged in vats from 16 to 20 months which allow for a hint of oxidisation.

Another brilliantly unique fortified from France Mediterranean coast and from one of its greatest producers in Chapoutieres. It opens with brambly black forest fruits, kirsch and crème de mure with a faint whiff of grilled nuts. Spicy and soft, gently sweet and ringing with wonderful energy that deftly manoeuvres the sweet fruits on a long and winding palate. Yum!

Artuke make this wine from five separate plots, planted on limestone and clay at around 550 metres altitude dotted around the town of Abalos, just to the south of their 'Grand Cru' Escolladero site. It bursts with freshness and lively acidity, with a core of cool blackberry fruit. There's plenty of structure here too, thanks to the proximity of limestone to the top soil in foothills of the Cantabrian mountains which shows the serious, age-worthy Rioja side of Rioja Alavesa, even in the modern-terroist frame. A lovely lift of red cherries, pomegranate and white nectarines leads into a fleshy and textured core. Subtle herbal tones of fennel and dried thyme and wild strawberries join in the chorus too. There's presence and intensity thanks to the riper 2022 vintage, balanced by a spine of chalky acidity. Pleasing phenolics on the finish add a tantalising chew, like biting through peach skins. A hint of white pepper to finish adds a twist (reminds me of adding pepper to strawberries, shouldn't work but it does!). Keep this delightful thirst slaker on hand this summer. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

Regional specificity in the key here, upfront, personable and loaded with charm. It's great drinking and just the right speed for day to day consumption. Red and dark fruits aplenty. Wafts of spice and touches of grit from the tannin. Nice push across the palate where the perky acidity keeps that generosity in check. Hints of dried herbs and flowers appear on the nose and touch the palate from time to time. Really, this is such a lovely wine. A little larger in size than last year's rendition but that's a good thing, adds a little more cuddle. ROSCOE

(On the 2019) Light, fresh raspberry aromas, with a touch of cherry. Fresh and precise. Only medium-bodied, this is very drinkable. A light mineral touch brings further freshness to the finish, which is surprisingly long for a Côtes-du-Rhône. Not overly fat or heavy. This is a steal - a delicious Côtes-du-Rhône.
