  1. Agathist Alchemy Second Wine Grenache 2016
Agathist Alchemy Second Wine Grenache 2016

    100% Grenache, Seppeltsfield, Barossa

Agathist Alchemy is a label from Barossa Valley guru, Craig Isbel who is also one of the people behind Izway Wines. Here he produces two wines from a single vineyard located across the road from his family home. It is owned & farmed organically by vigneron Nick Radford. The wines are produced in small batches of no larger than 500 kilo - wild ferments. The use of sulphur is minimal with tiny amounts used just after malo and at bottling. Other than this no other additions are used whatsoever. These are compact, elegant and character driven wines from a Barossa valley expert.

This is a cracker… A wild perfume of red berries, briar, fennel, undergrowth, old campfire. Really quite compelling. Just on medium weight, serious ‘pinosity’, if that’s a thing, light, fine, silken flow, slender grip of tannin dips into savouriness and yet the wine finds succulence in pure, red berry and rose water fruit character. Sheesh, this is fine grenache.’ MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  2. The Wizardry Grenache Rouge 2019
    The Wizardry Grenache Rouge 2019

Steve Webber is a man of many talents and passions. One of his is Grenache from upper Heathcote. He loves it so much he has established a brand around promoting the variety in the region. This is the 3rd vintage and of the wines and we are thoroughly convinced, not just because Steve stands behind, but because the wine is that good. The future is bright and so is this wine. PWS

This red delight reflects the name with definitely some magic in its makeup, dark cherry aromatics to start, with ripe but not jammy flavours as you sip in medium to fuller-bodied juicy fruits offsetting a fine, sandy tannin feel. There’s a lot going on for the price – look out for specials and keep an eye on it as the styling unfolds over the next few years. HALLIDAY MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2020

  3. Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache 2019
    Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache 2019
The estate's efforts across the respective grenache cuvees are almost as venerable as those across the very fine expressions of viognier. This, a thirst-slaking red, is worth celebrating for its youthful primary fruit: cranberry, cumquat and cherry bonbon. Yet, most impressive are the saline, slaty tannins that been massaged into the fray with aplomb, helping to imbue poise while curtailing the ripeness of fruit. NED GOODWIN MW, James Halliday's Wine Companion

Sourced from very old bush vines (some dating back to 1929) which add both depth of fruit and phenolic impact, lending the wine some subtle gravitas. Lovely, so primary it's almost juicy, lifted with elements of spice that slides in to grilled meats. Beautifully textured, vibrant and inviting. Lovely, did I say that already? There is structure and heft here too but it only adds to the overall sensuality of the wine. We all tasted this and asked how much. When we heard the price we jumped on it. Yalumba are masters at the craft and this is ludicrously good for the money. The ideal mid-week wine with so much going for it that it embarrasses a lot of other wines in a similar price range. 4. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

    Barbier Clos Mogador 2016 1500ml
    3 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

Keeping the classical profile, the 2016 Clos Mogador has been fine tuned, reducing the French grapes, and it matured approximately 18 months in oak foudre and barriques. There is a lively sensation on the palate, vivacious and with very fine tannins. It has a meaty touch and feels really young , despite the long élevage. There is a strong mineral sensation on the palate, something that is a texture and mouthfeel rather than a flavor. This is an unusual, fresh vintage. LUIS GUTIERREZ, Robert Parker

Alkina Kin Polygon 3 Grenache 2021
Polygon No. 3 is a tiny plot measuring just 0.274 hectares in size and contains approximately 200, densley packed vines. Working with terroir specialist, Pedro Parra, the team identified this polygon to be unique in its limestone content. There is shallow red brown earth over deep chalky sedimentary limestone which contains fractured schist and the limited presence of iron. NASAA certified organic and biodynamic.

  7. Aphelion Trennery Grenache 2021
    Aphelion Trennery Grenache 2021
Onkaparinga. A wonderful word. Plum and cherry, ripe and spicy, an earthy coal-like character. It’s firm and almost liqueur-like in intensity, with firm dusty tannin, and a dry plum and dried flower finish. Very good, but not quite as good as the other two single vineyard wines. Kind of sticky in its firmness. GARY WALSH, www.winefront.com

From the Onkaparinga Hills, a parcel of dry-grown bush vines, fermented as whole clusters and aged in a single, larger-format cask. This parcel was planted in the early 1970s and it has a sappy feel (whole clusters) and bright, very pure raspberries and some leafy elements on offer, as well as blueberries. The palate has quite smooth and ripe tannins, holds a fresh edge (low pH) and delivers a similar combination of red and blue fruits as seen on the nose. A little, chewy stone pop at the finish. Nuanced and elegant. Good now, but even better in a year or two. (95) NICK STOCK, www.jamessuckling.com

  8. Domaine Font de Courtedune Chateauneuf du Pape 2019
Domaine Font de Courtedune Chateauneuf du Pape 2019

Lots of ripe black cherries, leather, candied violets, and peppery herb notes emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape, which is almost all Grenache (99%) that was brought up all in concrete tanks. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, and nicely structured, it has some of the vintage's savory, firm tannins, but this is beautifully done and will benefit from a year or two of bottle age and keep for over a decade.JEB DUNNUCK

A tank-aged Grenache selection from sandy sites, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape features pretty lavender and garrigue shadings, plus raspberries, cherries and hints of stone fruit. It's full-bodied, concentrated and tannic but ripe and should come good in time. JOE CZERWINSKI, Wine Advocate

  9. Domaine Font de Courtedune Cotes du Rhone Village VV 2020
Domaine Font de Courtedune Cotes du Rhone Village VV 2020

From 50 year old vines and a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah.

Domaine Courtedune is a small family domaine in southern Rhone where a new generation has taken over. Brother and sister team Frédéric and Caroline Charrier have honed in on their viticulture and terroir prowess, finely tuning their work in the cellar. They've lifted Courtedune to venerable heights. There's a lovely synergy and balance in the wines, an intriguing spark that lures you back for another sip.

One of our high achieving reds that over delivers on price, this grenache dominant Cotes du Rhone boasts a rich velvety core of fruit. A backbone of tannins is ribbed by complex flavours from whole bunch and old vines. Their sandy soils (which neighbour Rayas) add energy to the wines.
The fluidity and composure of grenache is masterfully expressed here. Dark red raspberries, garrigue and blood orange scents sit alongside smoked meats, earth and licorice. This is a beautiful play on fruit and earth, where the terroir shines through in the ripe and juicy grapes. JONATHON LIVINGSTONE-LEARMONTH

  10. Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2021 375ml
Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2021 375ml
Never judge a book buy it's cover right? Mostly, you see the colour of this and you at least know you are on good footing to begin with. It's pale, like a blush of peach. Properly dry with a splash of sweet citrus, mandarin, ripe red grapefruit, a just tart orange aspect and then some lovely peach notes. All this is underpinned by a bright, clear, palate cleansing freshness and a nice pithy texture that licks at the sides of your mouth. It's long and energising, it both slackens the thirst with its buoyant, uplifting feel and engages the old taste buds and sets the salivary glands quivering. Who doesn't love Rose like this? It's so enjoyable to drink. ROSCOE

  11. MMAD Grenache 2021
    MMAD Grenache 2021

The clarity of the wine matches its freshness; 90/10% whole berries/bunches; 20 days in Italian-made tulip-shaped concrete 4-tonne fermenters, basked pressed, matured 15 months in old French puncheons. The highly fragrant blend of cherry and plum drives a very long, fine and elegant palate. (97) JAMES HALLIDAY

The grenache vines in the MMAD vineyard were planted in 1939. That’s quite a year, in world terms, to begin your life. This wine was aged in old oak; no new oak was used.

Truly beautiful grenache. Sweet and ripe but savoury and, even, crunchy with it. Best of many worlds. Woodsmoke, herbs, raspberry, cloves and a sweet earth character. The presser mentions pomegranate and it’s a good call; it beings that seed-like crunch to the wine. Tannin is ultra fine and the finish is noteworthy. Blewitt Springs is a great place to grow red wine grapes and here, again, it’s off and away, in full voice. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  12. Cepa X Cepa Garnacha 2021
    Cepa X Cepa Garnacha 2021

This is a real treasure in the Nekeas Valley. Dwarf oak trees in the upper regions of the valley concealed small areas of Garnacha vineyards over 60 years old. The age of the vines are a result of years and years of selection based on the experience of wine growers who knew nothing about DNA, but knew what type of grape that ripened well in this extreme climate of the region, sometimes very harsh, so they decided to do the same thing that they had done before. They selected the vines that faired best of the years - "Cepa por Cepa" literally means "Vine by vine" and this is they worked.

They have essentially rescued an invaluable genetic gem that could otherwise have been lost forever and the result is a succulent and vibrant wine. We are thoroughly impressed!

Another great renditions here with wild strawberry, cherry and spice aromas that meet-and-greet with a welcoming smile. Its sits a nice middel-ground of serious looking grenache with some tight savoury tannins, finely sprinkled throught that lead into smoked herb-like savory finish. Freshness and vitality but with that staturated core of sweet red fruits that is ever appealing. Looking good.

  13. Reed Powers Grenache Rose 2022
    Reed Powers Grenache Rose 2022
Bit expensive for a first release Australian Rose? Sure is. Here is why. The same fruit that goes in to her Reserve Grenache from that 150 year old plot is used here. That fruit aint cheap. On top of that she only realises about half the yield from the pressing regime. So, production costs here are expensive. Is it worth it? Yes! This was the wine that was the real catalyst for the offer. I will keep a lid on my usual excitable self but I don't want to undersell this either. This is a different beast than the overwhelming majority of rose made here in Oz.
Bone dry and with a sensational sense of zip and liveliness, plenty of pretty Grenache perfume and bright red fruits. A big punch of ruby red grapefruit kicks in as wine quickly expands and really delivers on the promise of punchy, ripe, rich fruit and a subtle creamy textural element. It's bold and solidly built with a real sense of presence. Very long and vivid with an incisive whack of energetic, snappy fruit on the finish. It Australian rose Jim, but not as we know it. If you buy good Bandol you should get on this train asap, it rolls all the way to flavour town. ROSCOE

This rosé was always dwelling in the back of my mind as something that would one day come through me and into the bottle. There were no shortcuts here, this wine was made with all the Gucci trimmings. Whole bunch pressed, 50% pressings yield, 150 year old bush vine Grenache barrel fermented in new Stockinger oak, it's rosé in full wine form. Textured, rich, floral, layered, powerful and long. When rosé is made with this much intention a delicious seriousness is captured in every drop.
Winemaking Rosé: Whole bunch pressed to new Stockinger oak for the early part of the fermentation and then went through malo and élevaged in old Chardonnay barrels, bâttonaged over 6 months at least once a week, sulphured to stop wine from going through full malo because I felt the wine was in a good spot with texture SIERRA

In Praise of Shadows Mankai Red Blend 2021

    Garnacha, Monastrell, Touriga, Graciano.

So much ozone, or petrichor, here, which is so appealing. Red berries, a little liquorice and spice. Medium-bodied, at most, fresh and crisp, slightly earthy, hazelnuts, spiced poached strawberry and red cherry, emery board tannin, a distinct ‘mineral’ feel, and a cool spicy/savoury finish of brightness and excellent length. So individual. So energetic. Outstanding. Get amongst it. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The name for this cracking little producer is Inspired by the Japanese literary masterpiece of the same name, In Praise of Shadows is. For Rob Mack and Brett Trewartha this is somewhat of a  philosophical wine passion project sourcing the best fruit from vineyards around McLaren Vale, many of which are certified organic and bioydnamic. Lo-fi, unfined, unfiltered, and all that jazz. Ultimately though just really flippin delicious.

    Mazi Limited Release Rose 2022
Mazi Wines is a collaboration between Alex Katsaros and Toby Porter - life long friends who have realised a dream to make wine together. Toby has been a winemaker at d’Arenberg in McLaren Vale for over14 years while Alex has been making wine and working on alternative variety projects both here and abroad for the last decade. All wines under the Mazi label are made dry in style and focus on food friendliness for you to enjoy the way we do – at the table with friends. The 2022 Limited Release rosé was made from handpicked Mourvedre and Grenache grapes grown in the heart of McLaren Vale.

The fruit was gently whole bunch pressed to delicately extract the spice driven, savoury juice synonymous with Mourvedre grown in the Vale. The very pale salmon hues are the result of the gentle extraction and minimal skin contact prior to fermentation.

  16. Domaine Font de Courtedune Chateauneuf du Pape 2020
Domaine Font de Courtedune Chateauneuf du Pape 2020
I loved the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a pretty, nicely balanced, elegant 2020 offering lots of red and black fruits as well as some floral, rose, and garrigue-like nuances. With fine tannins, a supple, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length, it’s well worth seeking out. The blend is almost all Grenache, brought up all in concrete tanks. JEB DUNNUCK

White pepper from the stems accentuates the fresh aromatics. Full-bodied, but again great freshness on the palate, with is underlined by the piercing acidity. Texturally deep, the tannins are just a little fibrous, but this has plenty of interest and personality. Sandy soils and aged in concrete. MATT WALLIS - Decanter

  17. Domaine Fazi Ile de Beaute Rose 2021
Domaine Fazi Ile de Beaute Rose 2021

Pale and fresh. Watermelon rind, pink grapefruit, redcurrant, a pretty herb and floral top note. Cool flavour profile, though flavour it does have, powdery texture, clean acidity, and a zesty finish of good length. Refreshing. Lovely to guzzle. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

    42% Nielluccio, 33% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 5% Sciaccarellu. Screwcap.

A sound introduction to Corsican rosé, this showcases the island’s more rocky and chiselled take on the style (relative to Provence).  Tight, tense, saline, with pink grapefruit and watermelon and citrus rind, it’s underpinned with granitic minerals and bone dry.  The international varieties in the blend give a little more generosity around its fine, lean feel – only 11.5% alcohol.  Sophisticated IGP wine.

  18. De Bortoli 'Burgoyne's Block' Mourvedre Shiraz Grenache 2021
De Bortoli 'Burgoyne's Block' Mourvedre Shiraz Grenache 2021

A typical Rhône blend of mourvèdre, shiraz and grenache that captures the juicy affability of the style. Deeply coloured with the rising scent of blackberry, mulberry, plum, vanilla and gently nutty spice. Impressive depth with sturdy, free-flowing tannins and balance. JENI PORT, James Halliday

What can we say about De Bortoli and the quality they punch out for often what seems like ridiculous pricing? Well we are not complaining. And hey have done it again.

The Mourvedre and Grenache are grown on the DeBortoli Shelley’s Vineyard on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. The Shiraz comes from Burgoyne’s Block on a west facing slopes which helps to concentrate the Shiraz flavours. Alluring aromas and flavours of spice, cherry and red berry fruits. This full flavoured, medium bodied, well balanced blend finishes smoothly and is further enhanced by hints of French oak.

Very easy to love, such is the intuitive ease with which all components meld. From the liquorice and Cherry Ripe core, the smattering of thyme, lavender and white pepper about the seams and the carapace of wiry tannins, gritty and savoury in the best sense, this is mellifluous. The message of place, convincing; the drinkability quotient high. Poised in every way, from where it is grown, the fashion in which it is crafted and its versatility at the table.
