  1. Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay 2020
    Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay 2020
Bolder expression of The Rocket, lots of flavour, lots of impact. Cinnamon and clove spice, cedar and tobacco, apple, green melon, wet slate going on. Flinty flecks through green apple, cinnamon spice and vanilla with faint smoky notes. Big mouthful of wine with powerful spine of acidity. The finish is a little firm and smoky. Tightly packed, complex, and structured. Impressive. Feels very fancy. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

  2. Murdoch Hill Apollo Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2020
Murdoch Hill Apollo Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2020
2020 is the first release of this premium pinot. Downer has worked closely with three different vineyards all on the Western ridge on predominantly east-facing slopes. One vineyard that Downer has been taking fruit from since 2016 has consistently stood out. 85% of The Apollo 2020 comes from this site, located in Piccadilly just opposite the Mt Lofty Botanic Garden. The understudy source is in Ashton, and contributes more underfloor, forest notes to offset the Piccadilly vineyard's red-fruited intensity.

On the nose this is brimming with aromatics that lure you in- dark spiced black cherries, maraschino cherries, wet earth and rosemary. The core is compact with great intensity and depth that slowly unfurls with a little air. A beautiful interplay of savoury earth and fresh fruit is apparent. Its spine of fine silky tannins holds a lovely line of tension in its youth. This is so tightly wound at the moment, and promises a bounty of treasures if you can put it away for a few years. A powerhouse pinot that is so light on its feet. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

  3. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

  4. Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Vieilles Vignes 2020
Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Vieilles Vignes 2020

Notes of freshly turned earth, floral and underbrush add breadth to the various dark berry fruit scents. There is again excellent volume and mid-palate density to the sappy medium weight flavors that possess classic Nuits muscle though perhaps just a bit less rusticity than usual. This is really quite good and fashioned in a built-to-age style. BURGHOUND, www.burghound.com

As ever, this is one of Potel's best wines. It is quintessentially Nuits St Georges. Earth aromas lay next to red-moving-to-black fruits. Floral lift but it's more red petals than violets. The usual hint of dourness you love in Nuits. Red fruit attack, minerality and energy to burn with a more muscular texture than the Volnay. It's always a wine that starts to show it's true colours after five years. This is no different. Excellent. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

  5. Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Roulee 2020
Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Roulee 2020
This used to be bottled as the single vineyard Herrenweg and comes from the famous village of Turckheim.
Pale straw yellow colour. The nose is bright and reveals a beautiful panoply of fruity aromas as well as lime blossom. This early character and already quite open style is also found on the palate. The loamy-gravelly terroir of Turckheim produces expressive wines in their youth and the sunny climate of 2020 will have built a charming, expressive and intense wine. The attack on the palate is supple, caressing but firms up on the finish, revealing a ripe and structuring acidity. Beautiful saline finish that lingers on with an attractive fruity profile. Although already very expressive, this wine will age well. OLIVIER HUMBRECHT MW

Effusive citrus and floral aromas with too many nuances to list. Leaps and bounds over the very juicy palate, which splash-lands in a very bright and zesty finish. From mature vines in the mostly alluvial Herrenweg vineyard of Turckheim. STUART PIGGOT, jamessuckling.com

  6. Dirupi Rosso di Valtellina Ole 2020
Dirupi Rosso di Valtellina Ole 2020
One of the better versions of this wine I've seen. Bruised strawberry, crushed rose petals, mountain herbs and a consistent backbeat of liquorice and menthol waft out of the glass. Just bang on for the variety from this part of the world. That same band of brothers weave their way through the palate, carried along within a medium weight, sweet texture before powdery tannins carry the whole package to a satusfying end. It's just lovely Valtellina and a great intro to the Dirupi style and, to the regions nebbiolo in general. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  7. La Boca Malbec 2020
    La Boca Malbec 2020
La Boca is sourced from vineyards in the Uco Valley, Argentina at elevations of up to 3500 metres. Purity and freshness is the key here with modern winemaking and very little oak to hide behind.

The high altitude vineyards lend a lovely lifted quality to the fruit on the nose and in the mouth.
Mulberry and black currant fruit give way to black spice and heady aromatics of violet that you don't often see. The well-established older vines yield wonderfully concentrated fruit at the core of the wine and the minimal fussing in the winemaking means that the pure fruits are allowed to shine. Plush and forward but with a lovely snap of acidity and round tannins that hold everything in check. Good stuff!

  8. Fontaleoni Rosato Condorino IGT Toscana 2020
Fontaleoni Rosato Condorino IGT Toscana 2020

Fontaleoni is a family estate run by brother and sister team, Matteo and Simona Troiani, with a little help from consultant Paolo Caciorgna. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer with particular emphasis on Vernaccia.

Like all their wines they get the primo treatment in the winery. A blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot this presents with a top note of rose-petal, plum, and wild cranberry. Its bright and crunchy mouthfeel gives way to soft red fruits and that sangiovese sour cherry we all know and love. I don't know why we don't see more sangiovese base rose as they seem to get that balance of savoury and sweet so well, especially when they are pink.

  9. Domaine du Salvard Unique Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Domaine du Salvard Unique Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Previously labelled 'Unique' Sauvignon Blanc. With a new name and spanking new label designed by the talented French-based artist Louise Sheeran, the package here now reflects the quality of the wine inside. Cropped from mature vines rooted in the sandy clay soils of Cheverny's Fougères sur Bièvre, Blanc de Salvard is 100% Sauvignon Blanc raised on lees without any oak. The Delaille brothers' 2020 is another succulent and vibrant white, packed with aromas and flavours of pithy citrus, and shot through with smoky, resinous freshness and mouth-watering acidity. 10. Le Marie Dolcetto d'Alba 2020
    Le Marie Dolcetto d'Alba 2020

The winery "Le Marie" comes from the passion for winemaking of the owner Valerio, his wife Luigina, and their children Simona and Daniele. The result are wines of personality, pure and elegant, produced in limited quantity and in respect of the territory, with environmentally friendly practices. The ten hectares of vineyards are between 400 and 450 meters. The land is rich in minerals that give the wines great structure and wonderful nuance.

Packed full of up-front blue and red fruits laced with peppery spice and vanilla. The palate is pliant and soft with a little nervy energy that flows through the red raspberry and currant fruit. A soft little snap of tannin that buttresses the sweet fruit nicely adds a little extra complexity. This is perfect trattoria fair and super versatile on the dinner table.

  11. Rizzi Barbera d'Alba 2020
    Rizzi Barbera d'Alba 2020

Ripe, plummy fruits leap from the glass followed up by violets, dried rose, gravel and something that reminds me of the perfect Sunday lamb roast. Yum. This is unctuous, round and ripe at first but just when it's needed that tart Barbera acidity comes to the rescue, freshening the palate and propelling the wine forward revealing a lovely mineral tingle and foundation of ripe tannin in its wake. This is very appealing and even more so when you see the price tag. ALEX DOBSON

Robert Weil Kiedrich Grafenberg Riesling Auslese 2020
The 2020 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese is impressively deep, precise and refined on the nose, with fine slate and highly precise fruit aromas. Round and lush on the palate, with crystalline acidity and highly stimulating salinity, this is a dense, gorgeously piquant and mouth-filling Auslese with remarkable precision, grip and salinity on the finish. 8.5% alcohol. 97 STEPHAN REINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

  13. Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage Le Rouvre 2020
Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage Le Rouvre 2020
There's a pleasant little blackcurrant jam note on the nose here. Lightly spiced, medium-bodied, juicy and with very fine tannins, there's a lovely sense of elegance in the wine, with very good acidity. Not as powerful as his cuvée classique, but a greater sense of finesse, balance and drinkability. Long finish. MATT WALLS, decanter.com

The bouquet brims with bright cassis fruit clad for now in smoky oak. The fruit pleases via a lingering coulis-style sweetness. The palate bears rolling richness, a fluid tone to the content, black berry fruits on display, the tannins ripe, layered. This holds good, proven fruit, its clear tenor appealing. From 2023, decant it. 2030-32 July 2021. JONATHON LIVINGSTONE-LEARMONTH, drinkrhone.com

  14. Domaine de Bellene Coteaux Bourguignons L'Eclos des Abeille Chardonnay 2020
Domaine de Bellene Coteaux Bourguignons L'Eclos des Abeille Chardonnay 2020
First point to make here is that this is the freshest and most tense version of this wine to date. White flowers, slightly underripe nectarine, you know that feeling? Crunchy, tangy, leaves your mouth feeling refreshed? Second point to make is there is quite a solid little hit of extract here. I think that's what keeps this wine from being bracing, it's kind of a buffering effect. It races across the palate with intent and gets the old salivary glands working. It is so refreshing but I really wanted some oysters to have with it and we were too "busy" at the time. I think another six months in the bottle should see a little more fruit build up too. ROSCOE

  15. Poderi Colla Dolcetto d'Alba 2020
    Poderi Colla Dolcetto d'Alba 2020
This is such a beautiful wine in 2020 and an absolute gem to drink. It opens with a beguiling mix of varietal aromas and flavors so typical of dolcetto with blue fruits, plum, licorice, a touch of dried herbs. Its slippery, sweet fruit is pushed along by the varietals fine but grippy tannins. The plump mid-palate holds itself so nicely as you drink it offering up sweet fruit and juicy acidity. The wine charges through your palate with so much flavour but never feels heavy or overbearing, Really well done.

  16. Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Krone Trocken 2020
Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Krone Trocken 2020
Anyone who doubts the greatness of the best wines from the 2020 vintage in Germany should taste this extremely complex and pristine dry riesling. Enormous minerality and structure, in spite of only being medium-bodied. So finely nuanced. Very long finish, in which slatey and chalky elements are beautifully interwoven with the white-peach and Amalfi-lemon aromas. Enormous aging potential. From organically grown grapes. JAMES SUCKLING, jamessuckling.com

...opens with an intense and complex, very elegant and chalky-fresh bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling grapes. Lush and silky as well as crystalline on the palate, this is a dense, very complex, finessed and grippy-mineral Krone with a firm, persistently salty and mineral finish. This is an impressive dry Riesling from predominantly 60- to 70+-year-old vines rooting deep in slate soils covering limestone sub-soils. Drink it from a Burgundy glass, in which the wine sits like an open book revealing all about Riesling, chalk and slate. A gorgeous wine with very fine tannins, lingering salinity and dense and juicy, lemony fruit. STEPHAN REINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

  17. Matthiasson Napa Valley Linda Vista Chardonnay 2021
Matthiasson Napa Valley Linda Vista Chardonnay 2021

Inviting aromas of lemon curd, wet stone and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied with lively acidity. So fresh and clear on the palate. Refreshing and delicious. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Golden Delicious apples, yellow peaches, musk melon, and honey greet the nose and persist through to the palate. Medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality.

For complexity, completeness, and balance, we achieve a diversity of ripeness by using the traditional method of harvesting the fruit a number of different times during the ripening period. The earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness. We whole-cluster press all of the grapes, then ferment and age the wine in seasoned French oak barrels, with only native yeast. No battonage (lees stirring) or racking. We allow two-fifths of the barrels to go through malo-lactic fermentation. MATTHIASSON

  18. Feudi di Guagnano Salerno Fiano 2020
Feudi di Guagnano Salerno Fiano 2020
The name “Feudi di Guagnano” derives from the word “fiéu” (in Latin feudus) which in the Salento dialect means rural district, portion of extra-urban land: in fact our vineyards, smaller than an hectare, dwell in different districts of the Guagnano area. It was born with the aim of saving a few hectares of vineyards cultivated with negroamaro and primitivo abandoned by vintners who were elderly and no longer able to cultivate them. It now incorporates several white and reds from around Salento and represents excellent value given the consistent quality they produce.

Warm citrus cut with salty mineral flecks and a delicate white floral fragrance. Its plush and forward in the mouth but quickly pulls focus with a mineral drive that zips down the middle of the mouth. Crunchy and fleshy at the same time and without of any the flabbyness that you often see from Fiano.
