  1. Fontaleoni Rosato Condorino IGT Toscana 2020
Fontaleoni Rosato Condorino IGT Toscana 2020

Fontaleoni is a family estate run by brother and sister team, Matteo and Simona Troiani, with a little help from consultant Paolo Caciorgna. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer with particular emphasis on Vernaccia.

Like all their wines they get the primo treatment in the winery. A blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot this presents with a top note of rose-petal, plum, and wild cranberry. Its bright and crunchy mouthfeel gives way to soft red fruits and that sangiovese sour cherry we all know and love. I don't know why we don't see more sangiovese base rose as they seem to get that balance of savoury and sweet so well, especially when they are pink.

  2. Cantarranas Verdejo 2021
    Cantarranas Verdejo 2021

The Agrícola Castellana Cooperative, situated in the heart of the Rueda D.O., was set up in La Seca (Valladolid) by small number of dedicated vine growers wishing to add value to their products.

Today, it consists of some 400 members who cultivate 2000 hectares of vineyards with modern equipment for the production of 7 millions of litres of wine per harvest and facilities for manufacturing one million of these in oak.

The Bodega has up to date machinery for the reception of the grapes, pneumatic presses and temperature controlled, stainless steel vessels for fermentation, all of wich have contributed enormously to improve the quality of the wines.

Another spot on release brimming with summer fruit salad, peach pulp and a delicate floral lift. It's juicy and fleshy with just a little snap on the palate to keep it fresh. Drink don't think!

  3. Paisley Wines Boombox Shiraz 2021
    Paisley Wines Boombox Shiraz 2021

If you’re old enough, you’d remember making mix tapes to give to friends or slip into the cassette player in your car, or whatever. My tape of choice, if I was feeling flush was a TDK SA-X (chrome), or even an MA-X (metal setting), and if poor, maybe a TDK AD or a lowly D.  All very nice. But thank heavens for Spotify.

A big juicy dark hit of flavour here, along with raspberry juice, mint, a bit of earthy coal-like stuff, some chewy chalk-like grip, and a warm and generous finish of good length. Doesn’t seem to have much oak influence, just a riot of bouncy earthy Barossa fruit. Good fun. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  4. Domaine de Chatillon Jacquere 2020
    Domaine de Chatillon Jacquere 2020
We were a bit chuffed to get this wine when trying it recently particularly given that you don't see a lot of jacquere wines out of Savoie at the price. The chateau is based in the Chatillon castle, a Roman watch tower built 70AD to signal the regiments along the Rhone River. It's pretty striking stuff in the hills there and the high-altitude vineyards lend a lovely racy edge to the wines.

Light bodied and crisp with a clean, steely minerality and light floral blossom accents on top of waxy citrus and green apple fruit. On the palate it races through cutting with mandarin and lemon peel apple/pear flavours and plenty of energetic acidity that drives a clean, mineral finish spiked with qartz and white pepper. Great stuff!

  5. Domaine Lalaurie Rivage Blanc IGP Coteaux de Narbonne 2021
Domaine Lalaurie Rivage Blanc IGP Coteaux de Narbonne 2021
Following their father's death in 2020, twin sisters Camille and Audrey are forging ahead as the 10th generation to run this gorgeous family farm near Narbonne in the Languedoc. As an enologist Camille has overseen a significant jump in quality by introducing modern winemaking techniques after working vintages abroad. They are investing in revitalising the old cellar and focused on biodiversity and achieving close to organic farming practices. Her wine style is sparkly, clean and honest, delivering impeccable quality across the range.

A delicate, fresh and mineral wine from twin sisters Camille and Audrey, Rivage Blanc is racy and driven by Sauvignon Blanc, in a restrained European style. Floral citrus mingles with grapefruit juice and a very fine cut of refreshing acidity, a great example of Camille's clever, frank wine making style.

  6. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

  7. Spinifex Garcon 2022
    Spinifex Garcon 2022
Some people love a bit of reduction in their reds; other don’t. I’m in the former camp, and this wine plays that angle beautifully. Raspberries and rust, throws of dry spice, twiggy herb notes, licorice and that smoky, earthen, slightly burnt reductive character. The flavours come both tense and sheeted; it’s a light-ish wine of juicy, taut finesse. Pricing is spot on. This is deliciously good. Personally, in an ideal world, I’d be up to my neck in this. Domaine du Salvard Unique Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Previously labelled 'Unique' Sauvignon Blanc. With a new name and spanking new label designed by the talented French-based artist Louise Sheeran, the package here now reflects the quality of the wine inside. Cropped from mature vines rooted in the sandy clay soils of Cheverny's Fougères sur Bièvre, Blanc de Salvard is 100% Sauvignon Blanc raised on lees without any oak. The Delaille brothers' 2020 is another succulent and vibrant white, packed with aromas and flavours of pithy citrus, and shot through with smoky, resinous freshness and mouth-watering acidity. 9. Chateau de Gaffeliere ‘Comtesse de Malet de Roquefort’ Rouge 2020
Chateau de Gaffeliere ‘Comtesse de Malet de Roquefort’ Rouge 2020

The team at Gaffeliere effuse to bend to fashion trends but instead walk a middle ground that embrace both tradition and modernity. Their respect of the terroir is linked to their long history in St Emilion and the family origins that go back generations.

The merlot predominant blend from the slope and the foot of the hillside produces a wine that at once contains a subtle sense of power while remaining racy, silky and smooth. There is a wonderful harmony here with the supple and plush merlot layering damson plumb, spice cake notes, wild forest fruits and black peppercorn between the cabernet francs crunchy red cherry and soft, wild herbs. A perfect example of right bank goodness and for an absolute steel.

  10. Bellenda Levis Extra Dry Prosecco DOC
Bellenda Levis Extra Dry Prosecco DOC

Delicate aromas of white spring flower, citrus and exotic fruit lead the nose. The dry palate offers white peach, nectarine and candied almond alongside fresh acidity. KERIN O’KEEFE

Notes of apple blossom, crushed rocks and ripe pears provide immediate pleasure. The palate is finely composed of airy flavours – lemon sherbert and apples take the lead, alongside slatey minerally flavours. Just when you think it's going to finish a saline twist on the finish delights. It’s a delightful prosecco that will make your afternoon catchup with friends. GABRIELLE POY

This fragrant, graceful Prosecco is the fruit of a selection of grapes from the finest vineyards in the zone of Cordignano, Sarmede, and Cappella Maggiore in the hills of Treviso. The bouquet is generous, with emphatic notes of Golden Delicious apple, peach, and wisteria, displaying a wonderful balance between fragrance and refreshing crispness. The palate is fruit-forward and smooth, full-bodied and well-structured; overall, it is a harmonious and elegant wine. BELLENDA

  11. Marcelo Pelleriti Signature Malbec 2020
    Marcelo Pelleriti Signature Malbec 2020
The 2020 Signature Malbec was cropped from a warm year and was produced with grapes from an old vineyard in La Consulta in the Valle de Uco planted 10 years ago. In this case, 80% of the volume matured in French oak barrels for 12 months, and the rest was kept in stainless steel. 2020 produced a dark wine that is ripe, reflecting the warm year, and it has notes of blackberries and black rather than red fruit in general. It's medium to full-bodied, with very integrated oak (the wines are not marked by the oak anymore) and ripe, round tannins. This is quite traditional and very good at it. It's getting better and better by the year... 70,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022. LUIS GUTIERREZ, The Wine Advocate

Another hit from a recent tasting panel here at Prince. We tried about 10 Malbecs that day and while all were tasty (well, maybe not every one) this stood out for its extra richness and depth. As is often the case its all delivered in a super affordable package that is sure to impress. BBQ wine of the week baby!

  12. Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavolo Rosso 2020
Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavolo Rosso 2020

Paolo Scavino owns 29 hectares entirely in the Barolo area and works on 20 Barolo historical crus located in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The Scavino family distinguishes itself from the beginning by their scrupulous care of the vineyards and passion for terroir. Their core beliefs is the supremacy of the viticulture above the oenology therefore the focus is the care of the vines in order to grow ripe and healthy grapes. In winemaking minimal and equal intervention are sought, to preserve natural diversities, terroir.

While they may be well know for their excellent Barolo this wine is always one that sucks us in when we try it. Nebbiolo from younger vines and those that don't quite make the cut go into this delicious Piemontese red. A melange of read and black fruits with roasted earthy notes from the neb component striking a beautiful counterpoint of savouryness to the sweet fruits. So plush and mellow but with a tingling spine of energy and fresh cut acidity. A wonderfull combo of vibrancy and velvety fruit. Love this wine!

  13. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2020
Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2020

A rocking little gem in the making, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône has a round, elegant, incredibly satisfying profile as well as textbook blackberry and black raspberry fruits supported by pepper and floral notes. It should be outstanding and well worth a few bottles. JEB DUNNUCK

An impressive Cotes-du-Rhone with stacks of blackberry and black raspberry fruit wrapped around a core of moderately dry tannins on the bold palate. Long self-confidently dry finish. A cuvee of 50% syrah, 45% grenache and 5% mourvedre. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

The medium to full-bodied 2020 Cotes du Rhone will see plenty of more time in tank, yet it's already drinking well, with hints of garrigue and black olives adding nuance to the blackberry and cherry fruit. Silky and clean, it's delightfully easy to drink. WINE ADVOCATE

    Two Tonne TMV Riesling 2023
Tamar Valley riesling from the Three Wishes Vineyard, planted in 1999 at Hillwood, and two small plots at Relbia further south. Pristine green apple, lime and grapefruit notes with hints of wildflowers, lime zest, crushed stone and citrus blossom. There's just a swell of RS richness on the palate, drawn into line thanks to a seam of crystalline, minerally acidity, the wine coiling – tension, then resolution as it flows with cadence, texture and lovely apple-lime fruit off into the distance. Brash Higgins Ripple 2023
This wine, the 2023, is made from freshly picked, whole bunch Nero d’Avola grapes which were engulfed with direct pressed Cabernet Sauvignon, as fortold. All the Cab juice covered the Nero grapes and their stems, submerging the clusters completely. The idea is that the sugar in the Nero berries, starved of oxygen, will ferment inside their little berry bodies and create a lighter, slightly confectionary flavour profile. All the fruit for the ensuing wine was handpicked off our organic Omensetter Estate Vineyard.

  16. Matsu El Picaro Tinta de Toro 2022
Matsu El Picaro Tinta de Toro 2022

A pristine and primary Toro with spices and baked cherries. The juicy, medium- to full-bodied palate is wrapped by fresh, tight tannins before a medium-length finish. Vegan. Drink within the next three-to-four years. (90) JAMES SUCKLING

Matsu is more than a winery or a wine; it is a modern project of sustainable viticulture out of the Toro region in western Spain. Use of biodynamic agriculture through all its vineyards are cultivated in a form that is completely ecological, avoiding any use of chemical or synthetic herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.

El Picaro´ is a young wine of the author that was born out of the process of biodynamic viticulture. With this wine comes the completion of the collection of Matsu, a trilogy that is surprising for its ability to unite power with elegance. ´El Picaro´ continues to pay a tribute to the viticulturists that have dedicated their lives to the vineyards. As the youngest generation in the Matsu line, El Picaro embodies the characteristics of a strong young man, valiant, impertinent, and uncontrollable.

Upon arrival to the winery, the grapes destemmed, crushed, and fermented in small lots in open top fermenters.  e firm cap of skins are gently punched down several times a day. Punching down is a traditional method that gives the skins as much contact with the fermenting wine as possible, ensuring that maximum color and phenols from the skins is transferred to the wine. After a 10-day fermentation in stainless tanks, the wine is aged with a combination of Hungarian and American oak.

Next the firm cap of skins and seeds that bubble up and form on the surface during red fermentation is gently "punched down" several times a day. 19. Telmo Rodriguez 'Basa' Verdejo 2022
    Telmo Rodriguez 'Basa' Verdejo 2022

Basa is based on organically-grown 40 year-old bush-vines grown at 750 metres altitude, and cropped at about 1kg/vine. Basa is all about perfectly balanced sugar/acid/tannin in the berry which is then carefully nurtured into balanced wine, with no additions in the winery (save for a small amount of necessary sulphur at bottling). Basa is a not-so-fruity Rueda Verdejo with 20% Viura in the mix finessing extra palate nerve. Basa is fermented in a mix of large wooden vats, concrete and stainless steel tanks.

Now without any Sauvignon, this gorgeous dry-grown Verdejo is blended with a little of floral Viura to lighten and lift. Basa is lovely, uncomplicated, and texturally pleasing. Basa smells of feijoa and fresh-cut pear with the faintest tropical wash and a gentle green herb tuck. The palate is mid-weight and of good length with a great mix of fruit flesh, earth and gently nutty tannin running out on natural acid. Textured without overt fructose, it’s savoury, with minerality and good length, and perfectly blends richness and line.

    Speri Valpolicella La Roverina 2020
The 2020 Valpolicella Classico Superiore La Roverina is spicy and floral, with a whiff of sour tangerine that leads to notes of white pepper, blackberries and violet. This comes across as rich but also incredibly juicy, cascading purple-toned flowers and wild berry fruits across a saline-mineral core. It lingers long, yet leaves the palate incredibly fresh, as hints of violette pastille and licorice slowly fade. Gorgeous. ERIC GUIDO

  21. Envinate Albahra 2021
    Envinate Albahra 2021

This is one of the most incredible bargains from Spain. LUIS GUTIERREZ Wine Advocate

The ripe mulberry, blue and black fruit sets the tone but the rhythm is tempered by its freshness with tangy aromas of wild flowers, mineral and exotic herbs at the same time. Juicy and fresh on the palate with a constrained medium body with vibrant, crunchy berries rounded by lacy, minerally tannins. Pure, silky finish full of blue fruit. Intrinsic. Delicious now, why hold. JAMES SUCKLING

The 2021 Albahra was produced with a blend of 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Moravia Agria, mixing grapes from Almansa and Manchuela. The Garnacha Tintorera fermented with 60% full clusters in open concrete vats, and the Moravia Agria was destemmed and had a short maceration. The Garnacha Tintorera matured in concrete for eight months and the Moravia Agria in used barrels, 228- and 500-liter ones. It has 13% alcohol and good freshness and acidity. Surprisingly enough, 2021 was a warmer year in the zone, and the wine has notes of strawberry confiture; and it has a rounder palate and is juicier, with a velvety mouthfeel. 59,500 bottles and 600 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2022. LUIS GUTIERREZ, Wine Advocate

Le Tertre du Lys dOr 2020 375ml
Classic Sauternes. A beautifully exotic nose of caramelised pineapple, fresh guava, white button mushroom,  jasmine flowers and confit lemon all create a hedonistic and dramatic aromatic. The palate then hits with a punchy sweet attack which is quickly cinched in at the edges by good drive and freshness. The same citrus, pineapple and florals fill the voluminous palate before being drawn out by the sabre of acidity and then a lovely hint of dark toffee creates a buffering bitter clip. It's stupidly complex for a Sauternes at this price, perhaps reflecting a little of the standard of the famed Chateau that made it. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  23. Casa da Passarella A Descoberta Dao Tinto 2020
Casa da Passarella A Descoberta Dao Tinto 2020

Made in stone lagars and aged in cement tanks along with some large old wooden vats, it's a very typical Dão blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (elsewhere, Tempranillo), Alfrocheiro and Jaen (aka Mencia).

A Descoberta means 'to be discovered' and the somewhat mystical label, a box tagged 1942 is a folkloric reference to an early version of a time capsule a box hidden in the stone walls of the house of Passarella containing a will to be opened 50 years hence and directing the riches of the box be re-distributed to the poor. The box was empty. Enrichment comes from the intangible not the material, it seems ...

A lovely wine supple, fleshy and spicy, with extra delicate tannin and oak. From lead-off, the cherry-chocolate fruit really shows the Dao granite, and is laden with wiry dark herbs. In the mouth, it's fleshy-meaty and mineral fresh - round with good movement and fruit-earth interplay. It has excellent presence in the mouth but is not reliant on weight for the show. Wonderfully composed, it sits and radiates, effortless in affect. Gorgeous delicate tannin is the frame, rimming the mouth and allowing the fruit and spicy acid to radiate delicately. A wonderful advertisement for varietal blends.
