Terre Dei Rumi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2022

If you like Sangiovese, you will love this great little drop form Tuscany's next-door neighbour in Abruzzo. Wild black cherry conserve and ground spice with fresh herbs on the nose. The palate follows through with similar spiced black cherry and wild dark forest fruits which are nicely sweet with a layer of fine, rich tannins that buoy the juicy fruit. A great example of this sometimes under the radar region. FEUDI BIZANTINI

  4. Monteguelfo Chianti DOCG 2022
    Monteguelfo Chianti DOCG 2022

This is one of those "how do they do it for the money and how is it so god?" kind of wines. Chianti from the estates of Andrea Cecchi made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, the wine does not see any oak and has a tradiotional leaning and plenty of character, particularly for a wine at this price. The Cecchi family has 125 years of winemaking history and have some excellent vineyards at their disposal.

This years rendition looks to have a little more fat and plushness on it then last while remaining wonderfully vibrant & fresh expression of Sangiovese. Often wines at this level are a little thin and hard (especially being sangiovese) or overripe but this skirts a beautiful middle ground retaining pillowy fruits but plenty of zing. Some more deep-set dark mixed-berry fruits with just a hint of leather and savoury dried herbs that linger in the background providing some interest and extra diemnsion.

  5. Harvest Moon Pinot Grigio 2023
    Harvest Moon Pinot Grigio 2023

Callie has grown up with wine in the blood. It was family holidays to Chianti in Italy, and tasting’s at Louis Roederer in France that sparked a serious passion in Callie from a very young age. Having studied psychology and criminology at Melbourne University, and qualifying as a chef it was the lure of wine and more so vineyards that she just couldn’t resist. She’s now studying wine making at Charles Sturt University, and has already worked at some A-list wineries, including De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley, Littorai Wines in California and Fattoria Zerbina in Romagna.

This is a smashing combo of classic Alsace and northern Italian style grigio. Bursting with Apple, pear, some honeysuckle spice, and a hint minerally goodness too that you don't often find at this level. It's the lighter side of mid-wright packed with crispy fruit and plenty of it the focus to a fine, citrus-driven fresh with lots of crunch and energy. The quintessential drink don't think wine.

  6. Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2022
    Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2022
Kris is from the Delle Venezie, the historical term for the three regions of the Veneto, encompassing Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Veneto. Always on point the 2022 looks to be the best we have seen and that should prbobably come as no surprise given the team that craft it are from famed estate Franz Haas.

White peach and crunchy apple and pear to the fore with a gently spiced, quartz/mineral nose. The palate is clean as a whistle with a core of sweet white fruits cut with bright, zippy acidity. At the same time the palate is generous with a lovely textural element that gives it nice weight and punch while always remaining bright and fresh. Another fantastic effort!

    STAGE 12  FLAT - AURILLAC > VILLENEUVE-SUR-LOT 203.6 KM

It's flat again in Stage 12 but its a long one. After 203 k's we don't think a red is going to cut it so we picked up this little beauty to put in the pack. Absolutely classic stuff here with plenty of fruit and flesh but a real pep in its step. We have a feeling this one will be making its way into the store by the case-full cos its got everything you want without being too serious.

70/15/15 blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle – Bordeaux’s three white grapes. Its floral citrus blossom, green melon, honeysuckle and tropical fruit aromas are followed up by herbal, grassy characters that add a touch of complexity.

    Fiore Nero Chianti 2022
Spiced cherries, dried thyme, rose petals and licorice lead into a swelling belly of berries and twigs. Its lovely and even keeled in its delivery, a spine of tannins ribs around the core of crunchy dark berries. The bright fruit notes are tempered by a savoury edge while a powdery tail of tannins signs off the wine. This is jaw-dropping value for a Chianti. No need to age this, relish in its youthful immediacy. GABRIELLE POY

  10. Martingale Estate Pinot Noir 2022
    Martingale Estate Pinot Noir 2022

Located in the heart of the Yarra Valley in the sub-region of Gruyere, Martingale is a first-generation family run vineyard and now wine label.

An open and inviting nose with hints if underbrush and red fruits to the fore. Sour cherry, raspberry, and a bit of savoury spice pull you in. There is a lovely ease and softness on the palate that is off-set with that savoury hint and that Yarra underbrush poking its head through again. Not too heavy, not too light, just right. PWS

  11. Colomba Bianca Grillo 2022
    Colomba Bianca Grillo 2022

Colomba Bianca a wine cooperative that's started operating in the '90s with a focus on research in viticulture and enology aimed at working more and more towards organic and sustainable practices. Good practices allowed Colomba Bianca to become one of the most interesting reality in the wine-making scene of the island. A process that, so far, has achieved the level of maturity in terms of entrepreneurship necessary to face the most important and competitive markets, both national and international, with a production specialization that focuses mainly on organic wines. A reality on the move, open to the world, with solid roots in the land and in the communities.

Fresh and aromatic, plenty of green pear on the nose with enticing scents of citrus fruit, a delightful hint nuance of sage and mint. Stone fruit, melon and hints of apricot with distinctive crisp acidity and a splash of mineral salinity to make it vibrant on the palate. Delicious summery drink with plump fruit combined with tangy acidity lip-smacking good times.

  12. Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2022
Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2022
The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.

We were super impressed with the latest vintage here. Much more texture and weight then in previous vintage with an emphasis on phenolic grip and slippery fruit. There is lovely chalky, white pepper note on the nose with fresh nashi pear and green apple to the fore. It's a lovely ride on the palate and this skates a line for serious and textural as well as fruity and forward beautifully.

Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2022
A serious Cotes-du-Rhone. Full forest berry fruit with delicate spice, bitter chocolate and licorice notes. Impressive depth and some real structure on the full-bodied palate. I love the way the generous, rather fine tannins carry the long, spicy and fresh finish. A cuvee based on 60% grenache, mostly from the Vaucuse region, with about 30% syrah from the Gard and small amounts of mourvedre and other traditional grape varieties. JAMES SUCKLING

  14. Fontareche Corbieres Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2022
Fontareche Corbieres Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2022
The Fontarèche property, at the heart of Corbiere in Languedoc-Roussillon, has a long, illustrious and noble history dating back to 1201. Current proprietor, Jacques de Lamy took over from his father, Count Edouard de Lamy in 1957 where the de Lamy family has been in charge of the property since 1682. The estate works with 17 grape varieties, but Carignan is their jewel in the crown. The vines are planted to the semi-desert Mediterranean climate trapped between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The Atlantic breezes funnel through the mountain ranges that form the backdrop of the region and help to temper the summer heat in the vineyards retaining freshness and vibrancy in the wines.

Wonderfully lifted notes of violets, mulberry and blue fruits all underlined with gentle minerality. The palate is brimming with a core of dark fruits that come together nicely with a focused and energetic finish. It really is surprising the level of subtle complexity at this price point that remains so easy to drink at the same time

    Toscolo Chianti Classico DOCG 2022

    STAGE 1 - HILLY - FLORENCE > RIMINI 206 KM

The Toscolo label pays homage to all things Tuscan.  Even the name  -  which means Tuscan boy in the local dialect.Toscolo Chianti is a lively and bright, refreshing red made from selected Sangiovese grapes.  A short maceration is followed by six months ageing in large oak barrels; the aim being to preserve fruit character.

It has classic aromas of violets and red berries with that touch of fresh leather and pepper notes. Soft, rounded and well balanced with red cherry and crunchy red fruits that trail off too a branbly and earthy finish..

After riding though all those vineyards and Tuscan countryside we'll be hanging for a bifsteca Fiorentina and a glass of Chianti.

  19. Villa Wolf Pinot Gris 2022
    Villa Wolf Pinot Gris 2022
It's 20-odd years since Ernst Loosen decided to broaden his winemaking palette by taking on the JL Wolf estate in the village of Wachenheim in the Pfalz. The protective influence of the mountains makes this one of the warmer, drier areas of Germany. In actual fact, this is a wonderful place to grow ripe, healthy grapes and the team at Villa Wolf - with winemaker Patrick Möllendorf at the helm - take full advantage.

Typically, wines from the Pfalz are weightier and drier than their Mosel counterparts and have a style that's rounder and more earthy and the pinot gris is one of the most consistent in the range and a regular on the shelves.

Pear and yellow stone fruit, a little quartz spice and a lovely mellow nose that's so enticing. Plump and plush it rolls out layers of tree and orchard fruit with a sprinkle of sweet spices here and there. A cracking winter white with it's a little extra fat on its bones to satisfy in those cooler nights. A delight!

  20. Spinifex Lola 2022
    Spinifex Lola 2022

Semillon 40%, Clairette 28%, Ugni Blanc 16%, Chenin Blanc 16%. Pete Schell is crafting a flock of exciting whites from the Barossa and Eden Valleys these days, yet Lola is the original, and some would say most multi-layered, release. Semillon has taken the lead in the blend for the last few years, as it did in 2022. It’s joined by 28% Clairette, 16% Ugni Blanc and 16% Chenin Blanc. The Semillon—a grape grown in the Barossa Valley since the 1850s—is sourced from three old-vine sites (65, 75 and 95 years old) in Ebenezer. The Clairette is from an elevated site in Rowland Flat on the valley's eastern side. This late-ripening grape, with excellent acid retention, provides additional freshness. Ugni Blanc and Chenin Blanc contribute texture, freshness and a lick of salinity.

Schell’s extensive attention in the vineyards and a light touch in the shed have given us another exceptional release of this unconventional white. Matured on lees in mostly older wood, it’s a deliciously fresh, textured white blend with nice phenolic tension, bracing acidity and a long, savoury finish—one of Barossa’s originals and best. This is hand’s down one of the best renditions of Lola we have tried. It’s super complex, layered with florals, citrus, fresh hay, honeyed depth and delicate touches of wispy reduction. It’s as savoury as it is primary, with salty inflections and delicious waxy texture. A wine destined for the dining table.

Deep Woods Estate Cabernet Merlot 2022

    Cabernet Sauvignon 83% Merlot 11% Malbec 6%

Fruit was crushed into separate fermenters and pump-overs and delestage were used to extract tannin and colour. After 10-14 days, the ferments were pressed before completing primary fermentation to dryness in tank. The wine was then racked into tight grain, thin stave Bordelaise French oak barriques, 20% of which were new, and matured for 18 months before blending.

This is one of the best wines that Deep Woods Estate makes. It's the one that I cellar for special occasions and also drink on a Tuesday with pizza. Julian Langworthy, Chief Winemaker

    Spinifex Papillon 2022
I'm a huge fan of Peter Schell's Papillon, this year a blend of 87/13% cinsault/grenache. It's fragrant and pretty with a spaciousness and sense of detail that predates the majority of the wines that today present in a pleasant vin de soif style. Red fruited and spicy with notes of dried meats and citrus blossom, dried herbs and cranberry. An oh-so-easy-to-drink style with chalky tannins and red apple-like acidity. It's a ripper. Rob Hall Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023

A blend of Harriet's Vineyard, Healesville, Boat O'Craigo Vineyard, Healesville, Nenagh Park, Willowlake Vineyard, Gladysdale.

Lovely aromatic lift and intensity here with a rainbow of red fruits; cherry, black and red raspberries, currants and wild strawberries. Open and easy-going palate that belies the subtle complexity but makes it such a joy. Long slippery palate with sweet red fruits and strawberry coulis on the finish sprinkled with fresh spice and a light peppery note. It's tougher and tougher to find pinot of this level at this price and last years was a hit too so, well done to the crew at Rob Hall for knocking another gem out.

Mainly destemmed with a small amount of whole bunches. Matured, mainly, in seasoned hogheads and puncheons. A very light crimson. Fruit-forward aromas of gently poached red fruits, spices and light floral notes. The palate is similarly easygoing, with soft tannins rounding out an early-drinking, good-value Yarra pinot. 24. Avaniel Tinto Ribera del Duero 2022
Avaniel Tinto Ribera del Duero 2022

Bodegas Monteabellón is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero with 52 hectares of vineyards (mainly Tempranillo) around the township of Nava de Roa. Isaac Fernandez, nephew of the legendary Vega Sicilia ex- winemaker, Marino Garcia, is the inspiration behind this relatively new venture.

The production at the winery is a thoroughly modern affair that draws on nearly 140 hectares of vineyards. The plots are spread over the Ribera, Rioja and Rueda with the mainstay wines those from their excellent Ribera holdings. Avaniel is made from grapes from one or the freshest young plots called "Los Miles". It is also one of the youngest vineyard with vines within 6 and 10 years.

This is the crunchiest version of this we have seen in a while and its all the better for it. It's still Ribera del Duero all the way but just done with a little extra skip in its step. A little black raspberry and a morello cherry to the fore that gives way to some subtle inky earthy elements that speaks of its rocky home on the Duero River. Really silky fruits this vintage with all the elements tightly woven together while still delivering a generous and plush palate. Some fine crunchy tannins scream for a bit of jamon or grilled meats.

  25. Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2022
    Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2022

SPECIAL VALUE - Vine Vale has a solid reputation for producing outstanding grenache. With sandy soils lying in the lee of the eastern range, the fruit produces wines of great perfume, which of course is what the variety is all about. Old vines here (1929 and 1949 plantings) and the glory of whole bunch fermentation on full display. Fragrant and great drinking with supple red cherry, dark plum and raspberry fruits cut with exotic spice, citrus blossom, Campari-esque tones, cola, gingerbread and earth. Savoury and composed with super-powdery tannins and a spicy, red-fruited exit with just a hint of roasting meats. Geez, grenache is great drinking. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY’S WINE COMPANION

Sultry little thing aren’t you! What’s that? What did you say to me? Drink another glass? I can’t, it’s a work night… Are you sure I will feel better if I do? Ok, you convinced me…

Wait, where did the bottle go? Ah Grenache, you tricked me again. I guess I should open a second, it’s still early. A little insight in to my brain.

Seriously?????though, I think bottles of this wine are prone to evaporation. It’s all too alluring with those soaring aromatics, perfumed red berries, some wild herbs, a whisp of mint some underbrush brought to you buy the 20 something percent whole bunch. Shapely and sumptuous wine that is much darker in the mouth where it builds in volume to fill the palate with creamy, sweet, succulent fruit supported by a fine network of tannins with just enough grip to keep things serious but not intrusive. Finishes more savoury and those characters come out to play a little more with some air too.

A wholly and thoroughly convincing rendition of modern Australian Grenache that over delivers in every conceivable way. Well done and thank you Yalumba. ROSCOE
