  1. Spinifex Esprit 2022
    Spinifex Esprit 2022

Mataro, grenache, cinsault. Feel the esprit. Lotus Esprit one of my favourite cars of all.

Seriously good red. Dark fruit but medium weight, ripples with suede tannins, tightens and coils in on itself with spirals or woody spice and fragrant, leafy herbs. Tension and torsion, a brooding red of serious architecture and yet high drinkability. An Italianate feel too. Bloody unreal. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  2. Mulline Portarlington Chardonnay 2022
    Mulline Portarlington Chardonnay 2022
Barrel fermented with full solids, no mlf, matured in 25% new French barriques and puncheons. A bright green gold. Opens with aromas of white nectarine and peach, lemon verbena and grapefruit pith before revealing attractive savoury, nutty notes. There's real drive and persistence on the palate, too, which culminates in a long, mineral and chalky finish. Excellent. (94) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companino

  3. Cepa X Cepa Garnacha 2022
    Cepa X Cepa Garnacha 2022

This is a real treasure in the Nekeas Valley. Dwarf oak trees in the upper regions of the valley concealed small areas of Garnacha vineyards over 60 years old. The age of the vines are a result of years and years of selection based on the experience of wine growers who knew nothing about DNA, but knew what type of grape that ripened well in this extreme climate of the region, sometimes very harsh, so they decided to do the same thing that they had done before. They selected the vines that faired best of the years - "Cepa por Cepa" literally means "Vine by vine" and this is they worked.

They have essentially rescued an invaluable genetic gem that could otherwise have been lost forever and the result is a succulent and vibrant wine. We are thoroughly impressed!

Another great renditions here with wild strawberry, cherry and spice aromas that meet-and-greet with a welcoming smile. Its sits a nice middel-ground of serious looking grenache with some tight savoury tannins, finely sprinkled throught that lead into smoked herb-like savory finish. Freshness and vitality but with that staturated core of sweet red fruits that is ever appealing. Looking good.

  4. Schmolzer and Brown Pret a Rose 2022
Schmolzer and Brown Pret a Rose 2022

Shiraz and pinot noir from Beechworth is the deal. Ready to roll rose.

It’s delicious! A gentle feast, but one with lots to put on the plate. Cherry, cranberry, rose hip tea, a strawberry sweetness in a dry, ostensibly savoury style. Length and beautiful, succulent texture, great sense of freshness and lift. Crafted, styled, preened and pretty, this is a moreish and wonderful thing to drink. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  6. Racine Picpoul de Pinet 2022
    Racine Picpoul de Pinet 2022

Picpoul from the coastal reaches of the Mediterranean has become in recent years the 'go to wine' in France for Oysters, shell fish and indeed all fish and with good reason as besides having that dry bite and the acidity that goes with it, it also has good body and underlying fruit flavours. I love it - and particularly as it is made by my good fried Francois Chamboissier who is both a talented winemaker and a great gourmet living in a stunning small village in southern France. What a life!

Another winner this year here. Salt spray and lemon pith with green apple skin on the nose. Plenty of fleshy and juicy fruit with a wonderful zing and mineral thread that gives the pallet a refreshing kick along while the long flavours lay down softly and easily. Lovely drive but nothing sacrificed in flavour either.

  8. Tomfoolery Young Blood Grenache 2022
    Tomfoolery Young Blood Grenache 2022
Inspired by the new wave ‘Vino Joven’ wines of the old world, Young Blood Grenache is released as a cheeky youngster with just a brief barrel maturation to showcase structure and varietal character, while retaining freshness and finesse. The fruit is open fermented utilising native yeasts, with 30% whole bunch in the mix. After 7 days maceration post-ferment, the wine is gently basket pressed and racked to stainless vats (50%) and old French oak hogsheads (50%) for 6 months maturation. Young Blood Grenache is pure, uncomplicated enjoyment.

  9. Tomfoolery Burla Negra Tempranillo 2022
    Tomfoolery Burla Negra Tempranillo 2022

The fruit from selected vineyards is hand picked and fermented in small open fermenters, which are pumped over by hand twice daily to maximize oxygenation and purity of fermentation. Once the wine is dry it is then gently basket pressed minimizing the extraction of harsh extractive tannins. Matured for 12 months in seasoned French oak barriques.

Characteristic cherry aromas with dried herbs. This seafarin’ wine fires cannonballs of red cherry fruit across the bow with a herby oak lift before walking the plank of fine acid balanced with rich texture, scuttled with a ballast of grainy tannins.

  11. Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
This is the second vintage that Grenache has dominated the P&L blend. The 2022 is a blend of Grenache from Mangels Ranch in Suisun Valley, Cedar Lane in Arroyo Seco, and Waddington Ranch in Mendocino, Carignane from Lolonis, Maria Martinson, and Castañon all in Mendocino, and Syrah from Vecino in Potter Valley. There is a good amount of whole cluster and carbonic maceration through the lots keeping everything fresh and fun. As always, the blend was made immediately after harvest and the wine was aged in a combination of French oak foudres and stainless steel tanks.

Oh yum! This is such a joy to drink. A cracking drop here from the legend that is Kenny likitprakong of Hobo. He was telling us that this was his house wine. The one that he has cases of to rip the corks off when mates come round, the BBQ fires up and a long warm weekend is about a kick off and we can see why. This is hard to put down once it's in your glass.

It's all about the red fruits here with fresh picked red cherry and raspberry all vying for position at the front of the pack. Some pretty violet notes swirl around and as this opens up some savoury whole black peppercorn and foresty bits make themselves heard. Its lithe and fresh bursting onto the palate with that core of red berry fruit. Clean and pure just sizzling with energy. A joy to drink and would happily take a brief chill if you were so inclined.

  12. The Story Wines Moyston Hills Syrah 2021
The Story Wines Moyston Hills Syrah 2021
As a rule The Story buys grapes in, usually on the back of long term relationships, but this wine comes from Rory Lane's first venture into vineyard ownership. He's bought grapes from this vineyard in the past, though over the past 10+ years it's largely been contracted to Mount Langi Ghiran. He's now running the vineyard organically. Exciting times. This release saw 30% whole bunches, wild ferment, three weeks on skins and maturation in 3000 litre foudre.
It's deliciously (black) peppery and ripped with bright, berried fruit. If you like Grampians shiraz/syrah you will love this. It's medium-bodied, bunchy, savoury and just all-around adult, though the fruit is perfectly well ripened and velvety with it. Walnut-edged tannins pull the curtain on a terrific show if pepper and fruit. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winefront.com

It certainly projects plenty of the spicy stuff - pepper, fennel seed, bay leaf, rosemary - but there's more to laud. Works a fine-textured tannin riff through dark cherry, plum and dusty cacao, finishing with a lasting, gentle savouriness. Dances rather than glides. Delicious. JENI PORT, winecompanion.com

  13. Jim Barry Florita Riesling 2022 375ml
Jim Barry Florita Riesling 2022 375ml

I’m doing a few Riesling today, which is not what I’m known for, though I reckon I’m easily the best reviewer of Riesling on TWF. MB, CM, KS and CHC can all eat my dust. Just saying. Aside from the fact that I pretty much never drink Riesling.

Lime, lime rind, lavender, a whole lot of chalk dustiness and crushed rock here too. It’s juicy and fresh, a gin and tonic bitterness, with so much floral perfume, some pepper and spice, and a vigorous fresh squeezed citrus character carrying on a long and powdery finish. Outstanding. Classic Florita, and the best for many years, I feel. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  14. Pieropan Soave Classico 2022
    Pieropan Soave Classico 2022
The 2022 Soave Classico is a total pleasure on the nose. Sweet smoke and mint nuances complement tropical green melon notes. This soothes with its soft textures while stimulating the senses with a zesty mix of brisk acidity and candied citrus. It tapers off crisp and clean with an inner floral resonance as lemon oil traces slowly fade. I would drink this any night of the week. What a treat. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

  15. The Story Wines Super G Red Blend 2022
The Story Wines Super G Red Blend 2022
It's not heavy but it's so wild with spice and so generally captivating that it's hard to put it down. This is a cracker of a wine. Red and blue berried fruit flavours, black pepper notes, a mezcal aspect and flings of roasted nuts. It's ripe and robust, in a mid-weight way, but the real key here is that it's aflame with roasted spice/pepper notes. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winecompanion.com
