Loire valley

Within France, the Loire Valley region produces the greatest diversity of wine styles. The array of wines made reflects the different sub-regions that share little in common due to the region's sweeping expanse. It's an exciting mesh of sparkling, dry, sweet, rose and reds styles.

Known as the 'Garden of France' the Loire Valley is a prolific food bowl producing delectable treats across cheese, cherries, apples, butter and vegetables. Covering 1000km from east to west, this picturesque region is a feast for both your eyes and tastebuds.

Grapes
White: Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet), Sauvignon Blanc
Red: Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Grolleau

Styles
The Muscadets of the Nantais are influenced by the maritime climate. These wines are subtly textured, freshly fruited and best drunk young with some oysters. Anjou is where Chenin Blanc shines in various styles - sparkling, dry and sweet. Touraine is home to the tuffeau soils which Chenin blanc loves in Vouvray, and we see some red wines here too. Lastly, in the Central Vineyards where the soils are similar to Chablis, Sauvignon Blanc is the cross-bearer producing some exhilarating wines in Sancerre and Pouilly Fume.

  1. Thierry Germain Roches Neuves Clos Romans Blanc Saumur 2019
Thierry Germain Roches Neuves Clos Romans Blanc Saumur 2019
The Chenin Blanc vines of Clos Romans are rooted in the walled enclave of a priory dating back to the 11th century. The soil consists of a 30cm layer of sandy clay over Senonian-era limestone bedrock called Pierres de Champigny, the same rock that was used to build Château Champigny. Planted atop a ridge in Parnay, just outside Saumur, the vine roots burrow down through the limestone, towards the famous troglodyte dwellings below. Germain acquired this historic site in 2007 and has been steadily replanting at a density of 12,000 vines per hectare. He practices massale selection, mixing plants to ensure he doesn't get a mono-dimensional profile of this terroir.

Undoubtedly the top cuvée at the domaine, arguably regardless of colour, this comes from a small clos planted close to the edge of the plateau, on Senonian limestone. The nose is expressive, pure and lightly salty and minerally, with smoky citrus and white peach fruits. The palate is no less harmonious than the nose, very composed, with a soft blanket of white peach and citrus fruits draped over a structure of pithy phenolic substance and fresh acidity. This is perfectly poised, showing great composition, total harmony, fresh, pure and precise. This has superb potential (and not for the first time). CHRIS KISSACK, The Wine Doctor

Arnaud Lambert Montees Des Roches Saumur Champigny Saint Cyr en Bourg 2019
Expect a fine balance of aromas, including violets, red fruits and savory nuances, and a satisfying sense of weight on the mid-palate of the 2019 Saumur Champigny Montée des Roches, which offers a relaxed feel but never verges on heavy. The acidity flows like a river, accompanied by resolved fine tannins. There's a sensation of transparency and lightness, like a Cabernet Franc version of Chambolle. REBECCA GIBB, Vinous.com

  3. Cep by Cep Coteaux du Layon 2021
Cep by Cep Coteaux du Layon 2021
Cropped from Philippe Germain’s estate vineyards in the heart of the Layon Valley, at Rochefort-sur-Loire. Unusually for the Loire, the clay and schist-rich soils here are cut into an amphitheatre of terraces. Compared to much of the appellation (and especially the wines of the Layon Crus of Bonnezeaux, Chaume and Quarts de Chaume) this wine showcases the more delicate, almost Germanic style of Layon.

  4. Rochers des Violettes Touche Mitaine 2021
Rochers des Violettes Touche Mitaine 2021

The Touche Mitaine parcel features Chenin Blanc vines aged 35 years, planted on clay and flint soils. It was vinified in used oak barrels of 228 litres, with an élevage lasting twelve months. Aromatically this is rich in powdered chalk, with layers of white peach and a fragrant, lifted, minty freshness. The palate matches this style, in a gently composed structure, polished and fresh, with the same minty, white peach substance. It is framed by firm acidity, which I find typifies the vintage. The alcohol is 12.8% CHRIS KISSACK

Pure and alluring, with apple and citrus cloaked in spices and salty brine. Remains racy through the smoky, vivid finish, thanks to mouthwatering acidity. Drink now through 2028. WINE SPECTATOR

  5. Arnaud Lambert Les Parcelles Chenin Blanc VDF 2022
Arnaud Lambert Les Parcelles Chenin Blanc VDF 2022
100% Chenin Blanc from a selection of small holdings just north of Breze in the neighbouring village of Saint Cyr en Bourg on sandy clay soil over limestone. Whole-bunch pressed, the free-run juice is fermented with natural yeast and no added SO2 in stainless steel tank. Matured on fine lees for about five months, with partial malolactic conversion. Attractive pure and primary chenin fruit vinified totally dry with ample body to the palate supported by good acidity giving a wine of surprising texture and immediate pleasure. Un-fined, filtered at bottling. DAVID BURKITT, Vintage and Vine

  6. Arnaud Lambert Terres Rouge Saumur Champigny Saint Cyr en Bourg 2021
Arnaud Lambert Terres Rouge Saumur Champigny Saint Cyr en Bourg 2021
The fragrant dark earth notes of Cabernet Franc give the impression of black soils unearthed from a thick overlay of wet forest moss, grass and bramble. Despite this dark soil impression and its name (which translates to “the red soils”), the soil is light brown clay with alluvial sands resting on a bed of stark white limestone. The cool harvest conditions, clay and limestone soils, and a life spent in stainless steel tanks renders this wine medium bodied with a clean and refreshing finish. Indeed, the sand plays its part as well bringing the fruits and flowers in the bouquet to the ethereal realm. TED VANCE, The Source

Arnaud Lambert Les Perrieres Saumur Saint Cyr en Bourg 2021
From vines averaging 65 years old on clayey-sandy silt over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast after separating free run juices and matured for 12 months, half in older barriques (3-5 year-old) and half in foudres. Shows a very clear expression of fruit with barrel-ferment notes adding complexity to the fresh, long and concentrated finish. Un-fined, filtered at bottling. DAVID BURKITT, Vintage and Vine

  8. Gaudry Sancerre Scorpion 2018
    Gaudry Sancerre Scorpion 2018
Organic/biodynamic sauvignon blanc. The philosophy finds winemaking practice rooted in the historical past - old mentality about the wines.

Textural and quite rich in style, light granitic minerality in the wine, some creaminess around that. Mouth-watering tang in the palate, exceptional length. Very classy, complex, almost savoury style but for the freshness and limey vibes. Lovely. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  9. Vincent Delaporte Sancerre 2022
    Vincent Delaporte Sancerre 2022
Delaporte's 2021 Sancerre Chavignol is a classic cooler expression of Sauvignon in Sancerre with youthful aromas of lemon, gooseberry, crisp apples and green capsicum. While light in body, there is an element of weight and texture that augments the wine's volume and softens its edges. The finish is bright yet balanced but rather brief. However, an attractive chalky note persists, providing interest and tension. REBCCA GIBB MW, Vibous

  10. Gaudry Sancerre Le Tournebride 2021
    Gaudry Sancerre Le Tournebride 2021

A precise sincerity and a vision for Sancerre wines with identity. REVUE DES VINS DE FRANCE

Vincent lives in the tiny vintners' hamlet of Le Petit Chambre in Sury en Vaux, meaning 'the smiling valley', and it makes much sense when you reach this place. Taking over the vineyard from his family in 1993, he started converting to organic then biodynamic farming, achieving Demeter certification in 2004. As a true minimalist Vincent's guiding principle is "Trust in Nature", making wine in tune with the power of the elements, with a feeling of being profoundly connected to the land. Inspired by local vignerons of the past from the village, insiders considering Gaudry's wines to be the most authentic expression of Sancerre.

Cuvee 'Le Tournebride' is made from 30-year-old massal vineyards, representative of the three main terroirs of Sancerre. Fresh and vibrant, showing beautiful tension and depth with white flowers, citrus, fresh gooseberry and peach, as well as spicy notes.
