  1. Ronchi di Cialla Ciallabianco 2018
    Ronchi di Cialla Ciallabianco 2018
The 2018 Cialla Bianco is smoky, wafting up with dusty chalk and musky notes of peach and pear. This gains a confectionary melon note with time in the glass. It’s texturally deep with cooling acids and mineral-tinged melon, while it soothes yet also stimulates the palate. The 2018 tapers off dry and lightly structured, yet also refreshing and long, leaving a hint of sour citrus and a lingering salty sensation. Lose this in the cellar for three to five years. The Ciallabianco is a blend of 65% Ribolla Gialla, 25% Picolit and 10% Verduzzo from 50-year-old vines. ERIC GUIDO

  3. Alpino Prosecco NV
    Alpino Prosecco NV
Who is Alpino? Who cares! Because this is cracking!

It's a juicy, fresh Prosecco from the cold upper reaches of the alps of the King Valley, Victoria and it delivers everything you could want in a super smart package. A touch of spearmint on the nose, crisp green apple and a hint of fresh sliced tree fruits. The palate opens with a hit of sherbet flavours that are driven through by a bright, creamy and crackling fizz. This is going go down as easy on its own as it would in a spritz. A real crowd pleaser here.

  5. Ronchi di Cialla Collio Friulano DOC 2022
Ronchi di Cialla Collio Friulano DOC 2022
This really is one of the most fascinating, inspiring, and singular estates of Italy. An incredible history that spans centuries and that in just over a quarter century has become a benchmark producer for some of the rarest wines in the world. A noble and impressive feat.

The property with its steep terraces surrounded by chestnut, oak and wild cherry trees dates back to the Paiarchte of Aquiuleia and the Republic of Venice. Unusually, it sits in an Alpine valley that runs east-to-west rather than north-to-south 35 km’s from the sea and 35 km’s from the mountains which see harvest start a full two weeks later than anywhere else in Friuli while rarely exceeding alcohols of 12.5%

Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preceded by two days' maceration on the skins; native yeasts; natural static decation. Ageing on lees for at least three months with frequent batonage. 25 - 30 year old vines.

  6. Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2022
    Kris Wines Pinot Grigio 2022
Kris is from the Delle Venezie, the historical term for the three regions of the Veneto, encompassing Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Veneto. Always on point the 2022 looks to be the best we have seen and that should prbobably come as no surprise given the team that craft it are from famed estate Franz Haas.

White peach and crunchy apple and pear to the fore with a gently spiced, quartz/mineral nose. The palate is clean as a whistle with a core of sweet white fruits cut with bright, zippy acidity. At the same time the palate is generous with a lovely textural element that gives it nice weight and punch while always remaining bright and fresh. Another fantastic effort!

  7. Ronco dei Tassi Bianco Fosarin 2020
Ronco dei Tassi Bianco Fosarin 2020

A 40/40/20 blend of pinot grigio, friulano and malvasia and aged in a mix of stainless steel and some smaller oak. Like flavour and aromatics in your wine? Here's one for you. The notional icon white of the estate, Fosarin gives you Friuli in a glass. The aromatic is an evocative and decadent combo of pear, cooked down apple and, more than anything, a wonderful overlay of exotic spice floats above the whole thing - think the Middle East, Iranian fairy floss, musk and rose water.

On the palate, the wine gives you all this again couched within a rich-but-not-overweight texture which instead lends gravitas to the wine. In one sense this wine gives you the impression that this wine may have too much of everything - flavour, texture and mouth aromas are intense - but in fact, the underlying acidity acts like the spear on a shish kebab holding all the decadence close to the core. Perfect food wine and having tasted many older vintages over the years, don't be afraid to keep some in the cellar, it handles ages without decay. A ripper. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  8. Ronco dei Tassi Friulano 2021
    Ronco dei Tassi Friulano 2021
Funny I review this wine at the start of the Australian Spring. I always get from this, and other high quality Friulano, a distinct waft of acacia, a nectar-like pungency which is quite lovely. This sits alongside peach and lemon on both aromatic and palate. There's also a real raciness which keeps the wine pinging around the mouth - mineral, cut fruit, skins and almond all in the mix. Delicious wine (maybe my favourite) and has the acidity and flavour to pair up nicely to the local prosciutto. I was reading an old review of this wine by Ian D'Agata and he finished then by saying "knockout Friulano". Ditto for me on this wine. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  9. Ronco dei Tassi Pinot Grigio 2021
Ronco dei Tassi Pinot Grigio 2021
Hint of typical pink and copper in the colour. Split rockmelon, lemon pulp and raw pear, cut hay on a dewy morning and yellow flowers flow out of the glass. All this leads onto a slippery textured palate punctuated by alpine herb tinged pear pulp, lemon and an undelrying energy and persistence of mineral that pushes the flavours across the palate at a good clip. A hint of phenoltics gives the wine an edge that prepare you for the introduction of food. What pinot grigio should be and an antidote to the lakes of commercial rubbihs on the market . 10. Ronco dei Tassi Rosso Cjarandon Riserva 2018
Ronco dei Tassi Rosso Cjarandon Riserva 2018

It's like a Bordelaise immigrant in Friuli. I don't mean these varieties (merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon) are new to the area, in fact the cabernet family have been planted up here for centuries, I mean the style of the wine blends classical cabernet production - modern vinification and small oak elevage - with a local fruit spectrum which offer something different to their spirit home in France.

Middle weight. Dark cherry. dark berry and leafy aromatic with a touch of earl grey tea. Palate is clean and pure, sweetly fruited but also lithe and direct. Dark chocolate and oak splice are woven into the core of the wine. It's a lovely example, the main feature for me being that it holds excellent ripeness but is also mid-weight and cool fruited. Excellent luncheon merlot cab blend that will age and improve for 10-15 years. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  11. Ronchi di Cialla Verduzzo di Cialla 2017
Ronchi di Cialla Verduzzo di Cialla 2017

Wonderfully exotic yet incredibly fresh, the 2017 Verduzzo lifts from the glass with a bouquet of exotic florals, young peach and green melon. This opens with a balanced inner sweetness complicated by salty minerals giving way to tropical citrus and ripe orchard fruits, as confectionary spices cascade throughout. The 2017 finishes vibrant and clean, leaving the palate perfectly reset for another indulgent sip. I would never guess that this finishes at 30 grams of residual sugar per liter. The harmony within is something to behold. Eric Guido, Vinous

  12. Ronchi di Cialla Ciallarosso 2020
    Ronchi di Cialla Ciallarosso 2020

The 2020 Ciallarosso is sweetly floral, with violets and roses giving way to hints of white pepper, red currants and smoke. This is silky and cool-toned with ripe wild berries and a pronounced minerality, all energized by bright acidity. It leaves a primary coating of concentration while tapering off long and structured with sweet tannins and hints of licorice. The Ciallarosso is a blend of Refosco and Schioppettino. Eric Guido, Vinous

  13. Ronchi di Cialla Schioppettino di Cialla 2017
Ronchi di Cialla Schioppettino di Cialla 2017

The 2017 Schioppettino di Cialla is wildly spicy and fresh, with an intense burst of peppery rose and smokey raspberry offset by a dusting of savory spice. This is silky-smooth and sapid with masses of mineral-tinged dark red fruits offset by zesty acidity. It finishes potent with a staining of primary concentration and a coating of sweet tannins. What a beauty, and with the potential for a very long life. In 2017, Ronchi di Cialla lost 30% of their production due to frost at the end of April. Eric Guido, Vinous

  14. Ronchi di Cialla Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2014
Ronchi di Cialla Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2014

The 2014 Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso di Cialla is a darkly alluring and rich red, with brown spice, smoked meats and ground coffee giving way to woodland berries. Savory red fruits and exotic spice offset a lovely inner sweetness, all enriched by a touch of hazelnut. Soft tannins, ginger and sour citrus are left lingering as the 2014 tapers off almost juicy in feel. This is a unique style of the Refosco, courtesy of the difficult 2014 vintage, but one that any fan of Ronchi di Cialla should not be without. Eric Guido, Vinous 2023
