  1. Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavolo Rosso 2021
Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavolo Rosso 2021

Paolo Scavino owns 29 hectares entirely in the Barolo area and works on 20 Barolo historical crus located in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The Scavino family distinguishes itself from the beginning by their scrupulous care of the vineyards and passion for terroir. Their core beliefs is the supremacy of the viticulture above the oenology therefore the focus is the care of the vines in order to grow ripe and healthy grapes. In winemaking minimal and equal intervention are sought, to preserve natural diversities, terroir.

Second year in a row for this wine (new vintage) so you know it must be good. While they may be well know for their excellent Barolo this wine is always one that sucks us in when we try it. Nebbiolo from younger vines and those that don't quite make the cut go into this delicious Piemontese red. A melange of read and black fruits with roasted earthy notes from the neb component striking a beautiful counterpoint of savouryness to the sweet fruits. So plush and mellow but with a tingling spine of energy and fresh cut acidity. A wonderfull combo of vibrancy and velvety fruit. Love this wine!

    Mauro Molino Langhe Nebbiolo 2022
The entry-level Mauro Molino 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo shows a bright and punchy bouquet with redcurrant, wild raspberry, violet, earth and sweet almond. This is a simple and authentic wine that will prove ideal next to a home-cooked meal of ravioli or stuffed pasta shells. There is a lot of freshness on the close to happily cut through the fat in those dishes. Production is a generous 70,000 bottles. MONICAL LARNER, The Wine Advocate

  3. Vigneti Costacurta Mezzatinto 2020
    Vigneti Costacurta Mezzatinto 2020
Made entirely with Nebbiolo, this serious rosato opens with delicate scents of red forest berry, blue flower, dog rose and an unusual scent recalling beeswax. Vinified in steel tanks and aged for another six months in steel followed by bottle aging, the elegant palate offers crushed raspberry, sour cherry and apple before an almost salty saline finish. Bright acidity keeps it energized. KERINO'KEEFE

Pale onion pink. Firm, minerally nose with aromatic hints of aromatic cranberry. Sappy and fresh cranberry and finely textured. Pretty impressive rosato and once you realise it is made of Nebbiolo you truly recognise it. WALTER SPELLER

Vigneti Costacurta Tintaunita Vino Rosso 2020
This young, savory red is an absolute joy to drink. The nose starts off with aromas of forest floor, violet and wild berry while the easygoing palate offers juicy Morello cherry, fleshy black raspberry and spicy notes of white and black pepper alongside lithe tannins. Drink soon. KERIN O'KEEFE

Youthful mid ruby. A pretty, perfumed red-fruit nose with Nebbiolo’s red beetroot and raspberry notes. Lots of ripeness but not heavy. Sappy, ripe red fruit, just medium-bodied and with long, powdery tannins. Appetising. I would serve this slightly cool at 15 °C. WALTER SPELLER

This Nebbiolo is obtained with the more delicate consistency grapes, coming from our various younger and more exuberant vineyards both in the Municipality of La Morra and Monforte d'Alba, as well as Roero.

Fresh, floral, and fruity aromas, with distinct notes of rose hip, marasca cherry, and delicate scents of raspberry. Light, delicate tannins and a fine, balanced body with good aromatic persistence. MAURO VEGLIO

  6. Heathcote Estate Nebbiolo 2021
    Heathcote Estate Nebbiolo 2021

Convincing nebbiolo. Tannic as all get-up, in a good way. Undergrowth and cherries, pomegranate and tobacco, decayed roses and mint. It starts off slow but builds towards an impressive finish, and responds very well to air. Most impressive. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

The Nebbiolo block is off a new section of vineyard established in 2017, and has been organic from the ground up. Picked in mid-April, it was harvested 7 weeks after the shiraz. The fruit was hand picked, hand sorted de-stemmed. Whole berries were transferred to oak fermenation vats for natural fermantation. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were transferred to older french oak 500L barrels for maturation. The wine was left undisturbed until bottling in late February 2022.

  7. Poderi Colla Nebbiolo d'Alba 2021
    Poderi Colla Nebbiolo d'Alba 2021
This shows aromas of ripe strawberries, rose petals, red licorice and blood orange. Medium-bodied and a little chewy with firm tannins and juicy acidity. Notes of sour cherries and dried herbs in the finish. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

The Collas are one of the oldest and most established families in Piedmont, and yet their wines somehow remain under the radar. Over the last few vintages, quality has been especially strong. Readers who enjoy transparent, classically made Barolo and Barbaresco will want to check these wines out. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Galloni is right, Pietro Colla has been on a roll of late and with growing appreciation of more traditional style Barolo and Barbaresco, they aren’t going to remain “under the radar” for long. The Colla’s loyalty to the roots of classic Piedmontese viticulture comes from a family heritage going back many generations and the only change here recently was the acquisition of a new winery. They had well and truly outgrown their original winery, spread across several buildings at Bricco del Drago in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio. Just as plans were being drawn up to dig into the hillside and build a new cellar, a neighbouring winery, Cascina Bompè, became available.

  8. Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo Langhe 2021
    Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo Langhe 2021
Spicy and quite marked in terms of its aromatic intensity, the Vietti 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is a more elaborate expression of the grape that has been softened by oak, spice and well-ripened fruit. It ages in large wood botte for two years. The wine has a velvety quality that helps to coat the palate, and you get a lot of stuffing here in terms of texture and lasting fruit flavors. Fruit not directly used for the Barolo Castiglione goes to this wine instead MONICA LARNER

The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is a medium red color and opens with a tightly wound profile, offering spicy aromas of cherries, pine, pepper, and dried orange. Medium-bodied, it has good tension on the palate, with fine tannins and a hint of iron-rich, sanguine earth. It's going to benefit from another 6 months in bottle, and is a tenser expression of this wine that's true to the vintage. JEB DUNNUCK

This wine opens with an expressive nose, exuding macerated red cherries, dried roses and sweet and savory spices. The palate unfolds with rounded and lush loads of cherry, where well-integrated tannins create a harmonious structure, offering a delightful and balanced profile. WINE ENTHUSIAST

The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is an especially nervy edition of the Perbacco, the result of a significant presence of Monforte fruit in the blend. Notes of red fruit, orange peel and white pepper sculpt the 2021, finishing with notable tension. ANTONIO GALLONI

Sandro Fay ‘Costa Bassa’ Superiore Chiavennasca 2020
With the grape variety recorded as Nebbiolo and its synonym Chiavennasca on the front label, the Sandro Fay 2020 Valtellina Superiore Valgella Costa Bassa offers pretty intensity that gives vertical lift and a direct approach to the bouquet. You get hibiscus and a note of purple fruit or flower, maybe lilac. The mouthfeel is fragile and wispy with a delicate, ethereal quality. There is a mineral, salty-like note as well at the tail end of this long-lasting wine. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate

  11. Arpepe Rosso di Valtellina 2022
    Arpepe Rosso di Valtellina 2022
This is your perfect introduction to understanding Valtellina.
Elemental wine, earthy and of pumice and granite, bright cherry, dried herbs, alpine herbs, so fragrant and so pretty in the palate. Grippy, fine, silty tannins, lots of dried citrus peel and dried blood. Freshness in all this. Far out. So much on. This is outstanding, The drinkability through the roof, and yet structure in tow. Beautiful wine all up. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Sweet violets and red and dark fruit on the nose. Layered and complex profile. Very juicy with a light to medium body and dry, extracted tannins in the finish, yet fierce and still rugged. Quite a personality. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

La Palazzina Coste Della Sesia Rosso “Vecchi Vigneti” 2018
Dried flowers, mint and liquorice, brown spices, ripe red fruits. It’s medium-bodied, packed with dense graphite tannin, cool feel to acidity, but has succulence and perfume. Feels very stony and full of ‘mineral’ things, precise and long with spiced strawberry and plenty of silty tannin trailing. It’s excellent, and feels like a wine from somewhere quite specific, if that makes any sense. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  15. Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2015
    Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2015
Dirupi is the brainchild of Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo Di Franco; two of the most talented young winemakers in Italy today. Located in the Lombardy region of Valtellina - a sub-Alpine zone just south of the Swiss border - Dirupi farm a staggering 17 tiny terraced vineyards; all at different elevations, aspects and varying vine age. As much as possible the Dirupi boys employ sustainable practices in the vineyard however this isn't always possible due to the nature of the climate and difficulties inherent in such peculiar vineyards.

Range of vineyards across Grumello and Inferno sub-zones 450-600 metres above sea level
Those who have followed this wine in the past know what to expect here. As always, the purity and elegance of the aromatic is a feature and what these Valtellinan Nebbs have in spades : haunting aromas of crushes rose petals, small berry red fruits and subtle minerality. You can live off the smell alone. Nicely ripe red and some black fruits sit astride the palate with a supporting cast of gentle spice and moderate but persistent tannins forming a staging site for one of the best releases of this wine I have ever tasted. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

The 2015 Valtellina Superiore is a delicate and refined expression with a fluttering of fast-paced aromas that resemble cassis, rose, violet and toasted anise seed. The wine is super lightweight on the palate, but it is lively too, leaving absolutely no traces of any residual heaviness. It wraps over the palate like silk sheets. This vintage is very open and accessible. 91+ points ROBERT PARKER

  16. Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2020
    Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2020
The 2020 Barolo is redolent of sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried cherry and incense. The blend of sites (50% La Morra and 50% Serralunga/Monforte) works so well here. Medium in body and gracious, with lovely understated presence, the straight Barolo is a fine introduction to this range. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Crisp and fruity developing notes of crushed strawberries, red currants, stones, peppercorns and dried flowers on the nose. Medium body with firm tannins and sharp acidity at this stage. 17. Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019
    Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019
The Dirupi 2019 Valtellina Superiore is generous and balanced, with a 360-degree approach to the palate underlined by dark fruit, plum jam, bluebells and other mountain wildflowers. You smell alpine slopes, cool weather and glacier-like aromas. The palate shows some dried herb and lightly powdery tannins. Fruit comes from a two-hectare site that is divided into nine parcels with mostly sandy soils. Production is 9,915 bottles. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate

The 2019 Valtellina Superiore is super-expressive right out of the gate. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco meld into a core of bright red Nebbiolo fruit, with dusty tannins that wrap it all together. I suppose there could be a bit more finesse here (especially in the tannins) but all things considered, this is nicely done. ANTONIO GALLONI

  18. Lalu Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
    Lalu Langhe Nebbiolo 2021

Organic. This vibrant, perfumed Nebbiolo equally blends two sites that were both planted by Lalù. The first site, Roncaglie in La Morra, is a plot of land that Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala bought in 2015 and planted in 2017. Looking towards Verduno, this parcel faces east at an altitude of 400 metres. It’s a cool, windy, slow-ripening site. The second source is Bussia Bovi, a sub-Cru within Monforte’s superstar Bussia MGA. Lalù’s parcel is located at 320 metres above sea level, in the south of Bussia, between Bricco San Pietro and the area historically known as Bussia Arnulfo. The soils here are rich in sand, gifting a perfumed wine with supple fruit and great delicacy—the yin to Roncaglie’s yang. The fruit from here fermented as whole bunches and was raised in concrete to retain as much fragrance as possible. Both vineyards could be classified as Barolo (when the vines are of age), which says a great deal about the quality on offer here.

This Langhe Nebbiolo delivers more than most. The 2021 is a juicy, pretty Nebbiolo brimming with vibrant red and dark cherry fruit, anise, florals and some wood spice. In the mouth, the typical austerity of young Langhe is traded for svelte, integrated tannins and supple texture, all supported by mouth-watering energy.

Red fruit, baking spice, mint, tobacco. It's medium-bodied, bright and fresh, strawberry and spice, with a particularly pleasing 'mineral' character, and plenty of energy with that, tannin is fine and dusty/peppery. and the finish is fresh and quite long, and distinctly spicy. The 2020 Barolo is a gorgeous, classy wine. Crushed rose petal, red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel are all beautifully lifted in this gracious, mid-weight Barolo. Bright Monforte acids lend notable energy and freshness. This elegant, delicate Barolo is superb. The 2020 spent two years in wood, mostly barrique and about 10% in cask. What a joy. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

Rich and warmed aromas of ripe red fruits abundant in spice, featuring a pronounced licorice presence that melds with the warm, inviting notes of oak. On the palate, the wine is firm, with chewy tannins, contributing to its structured and robust character that keeps the rounded and plush fruit at bay as more savory elements develop as the wine evolves.
