  1. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo 2016
    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo 2016
Aromas of wild berry, rose and baking spice align with a whiff of menthol. Elegantly focused, the vibrant, youthfully austere palate delivers crushed raspberry, Morello cherry and licorice framed in taut, close-grained tannins and fresh acidity before a rather drying, tight finish. Give it a few more years to fully unwind. Drink 2024-2036. (96) KERIN O'KEEFE

Youthful ruby. Concentrated and lifted and with hints of sweet spice on the nose. Lithe, sweet and ripe cherry fruit palate charged with stalky tannins. Great intensity and transparency of fruit. Bright acidity and firm, slightly drying tannins that demand more ageing, streamline the whole. WALTER SPELLER

  2. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo Fondetta 2017
    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo Fondetta 2017
Rose, violet and perfumed berry aromas lead the nose followed by whiffs of camphor and culinary spice. Full bodied, supremely elegant and surprisingly fresh for the hot vintage, the savory palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2022–2032. (95) KERRIN O'KEEFE, www.wineentusiast.com

The south-facing Nervo vineyard is located at an altitude of over 300 metres, which may account for its elegance. Ernesto Dellapiana and his son Enrico produce wines with a light touch, and their Nervo is aged in concrete tanks as well as casks. The red-fruit nose is intense and pure, and the attack supple and silky. There's a taut structure here, and fine acidity that keeps it lively and peppery. This wine is marked by energy, stylishness, and persistence. STEPHEN BROOK, Decanter

Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San En Piasi 2017 1500ml

The 2017 Barolo EnPiasì is such a pleasure to taste. A whole range of floral and savory nuances open first, suggesting the presence of whole clusters, even though the wine is made entirely from grapes that have been destemmed by hand. Silky, nuanced and beautifully persistent in the glass, the 2017 is a Barolo of pure and total finesse. I would prefer to drink it over the next 10-15 years, a bit of youthful Nebbiolo tannin notwithstanding, as it would be a shame to miss out on the extraordinary purity of fruit that is present at this stage. 4. Mauro Veglio Barolo Paiagallo 2017
    Mauro Veglio Barolo Paiagallo 2017

Mauro Veglio's property in Paiagallo is at mid-altitude in what is called Vigna San Sebastiano, bordering Terlo, to which it is closer in style than the opposite side of the MGA. Garnet in colour, it has notes of watermelon, earthy strawberry and lemon leaf. Elegance and freshness prevail over the powerful palate. Nevertheless, it is full bodied, well extracted and with sweet tannins. Citrus notes and liquorice emerge on the finish. ALDO FIORDELLI, www.decanter.com

The 2017 Barolo Paiagallo is the most open and racy of Veglio's 2017. Ripe red cherry, kirsch, dried flowers, orange peel and cinnamon all develop as the 2017 opens in the glass. This is an especially ripe, forward Barolo, but it also has a bit better balance in its tannins. ANTONIO GALLONI

In this wine you glimpse the future of the estate. The lack of smaller oak here reveals a more open profile of red fruits, florals and fruit tannins (not oak tannins) which give life and an entirely different shape to the structural profile. The tannins are saturated and enlivening. I simply love this wine and it occurs to me it's the kind of wine which is the reason you drink Barolo. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

  5. Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2017
    Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2017
Vietti's 2017 Barolo Lazzarito is absolutely gorgeous. Whatever the challenges of the growing season, they appear to have been no problem here. More than anything else, the Lazzarito impresses with its magnificent depth and stature. Super-ripe red fruit, white pepper, mint, tobacco, cured meat, spice and rose petal open gradually with time in the glass. I would not be in a rush to open bottles anytime soon. The Lazzarito has been one of the most improved wines at Vietti for a number of years. The 2017 is so captivating. ANTONIO GALLONI, www.vinousmedia.com

  6. Vietti Barolo Ravera Novello 2017
    Vietti Barolo Ravera Novello 2017
The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a powerhouse. My impression is that the 2017 is going to develop into something truly special. It has all the energy that makes this site so distinctive, but with an extra kick of fruit density and a whole range of exotic aromatics that make for a truly drop dead gorgeous wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. This is such and impressive wine. ANTONIO GALLONI, www.vinousmedia.com

  7. Dirupi Rosso di Valtellina Ole 2020
Dirupi Rosso di Valtellina Ole 2020
One of the better versions of this wine I've seen. Bruised strawberry, crushed rose petals, mountain herbs and a consistent backbeat of liquorice and menthol waft out of the glass. Just bang on for the variety from this part of the world. That same band of brothers weave their way through the palate, carried along within a medium weight, sweet texture before powdery tannins carry the whole package to a satusfying end. It's just lovely Valtellina and a great intro to the Dirupi style and, to the regions nebbiolo in general. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  8. il Modo Rosso 2019
    il Modo Rosso 2019
With no nerello mascalese plantings in Australia, Nadeson has fermented sangiovese, pinot noir, aglianico, sagrantino, nebbiolo and shiraz in an amphora and miraculously made a wine with finesse and inky tannins. This medium bodied red tempts with heady violets, licorice root and black plums on the nose. The palate flows, entwined with a meaty tone alongside the florals and spice. This has dimension and texture, and is very delicious. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

  9. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo 2019
    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo 2019
This fragrant red has aromas of baking spice, violet, vineyard dust and blue flower. The savory, elegant palate shows ripe Morello cherry, star anise and clove framed in vibrant acidity and taut, refined tannins.(95) KERIN O'KEEFE, wineenthusiast.com

There's a lightness and nervy spine to the core of maraschino cherries and licorice - a feature of the sandy soils perhaps.  At the moment it feels a little tense, there's a swell of flavours at the fore, but it needs time. Tobacco and balsamic earthy notes balance the berries and dry spices. This is finely tuned and packed with excitement, but tuck it away and it will reward with a few years under its belt. 10. Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2018
    Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2018
A large part of the grapes was fermented in rotofermenters for 10 days because they can take the biggest volume. The remainder was fermented in vertical stainless-steel tanks and remained on the skins for 15 days. Aged in 15% new barriques and used tonneaux for 24 months. Bottled in July 2021.
Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Fragrant, elegant, sweet and concentrated red-fruit nose with a peppery tingle and balsamic touches and a touch of cinnamon bark. With aeration salty, minerally hints creep up on the nose. Sappy red fruit and crunchy tannins add grip to the succulent fruit finish. Elegant and fresh. WALTER SPELLER, www.jancisrobinson.com

  11. Mauro Veglio Barolo Paiagallo 2018
    Mauro Veglio Barolo Paiagallo 2018
The 2018 Barolo Paiagallo is delicate, ethereal and beautifully perfumed. Sweet pipe tobacco, orange peel, mint, dried cherry, licorice and incense are all laced together in this very pretty, nuanced Barolo. The Paiagallo is the one Barolo in this range aged in cask. ANTONIO GALLONI

Barolo. 25 days on the skins and aged only in large oak casks.
Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Savoury, meaty nose and generous fruit with crunchy tannins on the palate. Easy-going and full and still a little embryonic in spite of its fullness. WALTER SPELLER, www.jancisrobinson.com

  12. Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2018
    Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2018
Monforte d'Alba. 20 days on the skins.
Concentrated lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury and concentrated with fully integrated oak notes adding a spicy edge to the wine. Plenty of sour-cherry fruit on the palate. Generous and youthful with a layer of long, polished tannins. Perhaps the most approachable of their 2018 Barolos, but also has potential to age. WALTER SPELLER

The 2018 Barolo Castelletto is a powerful, deep wine that is not ready to show all its cards yet. Then again, this is Monforte Barolo we are talking about. Dried herbs, iron chalk, white pepper, crushed flowers and mint all grace this inward, brooding Barolo from Veglio. A whole range of savory, earth and mineral notes abound. ANTONIO GALLONI

  13. Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2018
    Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2018
The first thing that strikes you with any Dirupi wine is the soaring, ethereal florals. For this 2018 it's no different, crushed red petals and dried herbs blend with citrus peel and a deeper pitched minerality, not found in the Ole. The palate is svelte and the sweet red-berry-fruit is accented by subtle oak spice notes and mineral salts. While the overall feel on the palate is lithe, the flavours are closely packed-in and create a lingering feeling of concentration and gravitas. Another beautiful wine from this producer and one that plays to the beauty of the variety. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  14. Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate 2018
Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate 2018
From a vineyard located across from Gavarini Chiniera, this is a slightly more robust and concentrated wine. The 2018 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté sources its fruit from a position at a slightly lower elevation with a bigger component of clay in the soils. The south and southeast-facing hillside is also more open to the horizon. These conditions give the Ginestra Casa Maté a broad texture and rich flavors of black and purple fruits. The wine is compact with dense texture that will relax over the next 10 years of age. Production is 12,000 bottles. (95) MONICA LARNER, Wine Advocate

  15. Elio Grasso Barolo Vigna Gavarini Chiniera 2018
Elio Grasso Barolo Vigna Gavarini Chiniera 2018
The Gavarini Chiniera vineyard is shaped like an amphitheater with thick forests at the back (which protects from cold air currents) and sandy chalk soil at 380 meters in elevation. This is a special site, and the Elio Grasso 2018 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is always one of Grasso's most easily recognized wines. This vintage is exceptionally bright and vibrant with lifted tones of cherry, plum, blue flower and sweet blood orange. Those primary notes are framed by sensations of dusty white mineral. This mid-weight wine exhibits the deep elegance that was achieved in this vintage.  (96) MONICA LARNER, Wine Advocate

  16. Elio Grasso Barolo Runcot Riserva 2015
Elio Grasso Barolo Runcot Riserva 2015
The 2015 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is absolutely gorgeous. That much is clear. The only thing the 2015 needs is time. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner perfume and bright, red-toned fruit. Blood orange, spice, mint, licorice and dried flowers linger on the persistent, sculpted finish. Readers should not plan on opening a bottle any time soon, as the Rüncot only starts to drink well at around age ten, at a minimum. There is certainly plenty to look forward to. ANTONIO GALLONI

  17. Heathcote Estate Nebbiolo 2021
    Heathcote Estate Nebbiolo 2021

Convincing nebbiolo. Tannic as all get-up, in a good way. Undergrowth and cherries, pomegranate and tobacco, decayed roses and mint. It starts off slow but builds towards an impressive finish, and responds very well to air. Most impressive. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

The Nebbiolo block is off a new section of vineyard established in 2017, and has been organic from the ground up. Picked in mid-April, it was harvested 7 weeks after the shiraz. The fruit was hand picked, hand sorted de-stemmed. Whole berries were transferred to oak fermenation vats for natural fermantation. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were transferred to older french oak 500L barrels for maturation. The wine was left undisturbed until bottling in late February 2022.

  18. Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavolo Rosso 2020
Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavolo Rosso 2020

Paolo Scavino owns 29 hectares entirely in the Barolo area and works on 20 Barolo historical crus located in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The Scavino family distinguishes itself from the beginning by their scrupulous care of the vineyards and passion for terroir. Their core beliefs is the supremacy of the viticulture above the oenology therefore the focus is the care of the vines in order to grow ripe and healthy grapes. In winemaking minimal and equal intervention are sought, to preserve natural diversities, terroir.

While they may be well know for their excellent Barolo this wine is always one that sucks us in when we try it. Nebbiolo from younger vines and those that don't quite make the cut go into this delicious Piemontese red. A melange of read and black fruits with roasted earthy notes from the neb component striking a beautiful counterpoint of savouryness to the sweet fruits. So plush and mellow but with a tingling spine of energy and fresh cut acidity. A wonderfull combo of vibrancy and velvety fruit. Love this wine!
