  1. Lignee Rouge Shiraz/Pinot 2021 1500ml
    Lignee Rouge Shiraz/Pinot 2021 1500ml

    3 BOTTLE AVAILABLE

    (on the 2018)
Here’s a collaboration between NSW Sexyboys Will Gilbert (of Mudgee) and Angus Vinden (of Hunter). It’s a 50/50 blend of Hunter Shiraz (1968 block Somerset) and Orange Pinot Noir. Only older oak. 400 magnums filled, and magnums only.

Smoky, spicy, hazelnut, cherry and raspberry, mint, bright and a bit tangy. Medium-bodied, cranberry acidity, fresh red fruits, a slight fenugreek/aniseed bitterness/perfume thing, frisky and slightly stalky, strawberry and spice on a long cool finish, graphite tannin trailing. So interesting. Vibrant and translucent. Great to drink too. 94+ Gary Walsh, THE WINE FRONT

  2. Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea Shiraz 2018
Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea Shiraz 2018

I was asked to guess the fruit source for this wine, and I pretty much got it right. That’s an introduction Campbell would NEVER write. Anyway, 1880 vines, with a mix of Rosehill 1946 and 1965 making up the other half. O’Shea is now the wine it always should have been. Thank you.

Boysenberry, red fruits, earthy, perfumed, aniseed/flowing basil and rose perfume. Medium-bodied, crunchy and energetic, the acidity so bright yet calm, supple but kind of coal dust tannin, coolness, grip and supreme length on the finish. Tightly knit, lithe, and bounding into the future with supreme confidence and optimism. Magnificent. 97+ GARY WALSH

  3. Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2017
    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2017

At 6 years of age on release, the colour is just starting to show some development with yellow tints complimenting the green edges. Lifted lemon curd and floral notes heading to bees wax, brioche and toast. Lively Tahitian lime juice characters are backed by a superb, zesty acidity. The magic of Hunter Valley semillon on display with texture, fruit weight and great length from a wine that sees no oak. The ILR Reserve Semillon is released only from the best years and the 2017 is a beauty. (97) Best in Show - 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards

From one of the masters of developed semillon, helped in this instance by the great semillon vintage. Its bouquet suggests the use of oak - not true. It's a hypnotic wine, with Meyer lemon driving the citrus circus and the wheels of acidity. (98) JAMES HALLIDAY

Few semillons scale the heights of consistency and excellence that this wine does. August 2023 release.
It's got gentle development in faint creaminess to texture, despite the chalky pucker and chew. Scents show off nougat, light honey toastiness, lime, lemon, dried apple. It's lovely to take a big whiff of and the palate echoes those characters well. Tense acidity is a mainstay, the length of flavour extreme and palate staining in a gentle sense. The gentle development lends a sweetness to fruit, but geez, that pure, cool, citrusy and mineral-laden acidity is a force. It's wonderfully balanced and extremely good. (96+) MIKE BENNIE

  4. Mount Pleasant Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz 2022
Mount Pleasant Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz 2022
All the 1880 Old Hill went into this wine in 2022. 20% new French oak. It's labelled O.P. & O.H. again, though some years it was Old Paddock and Old Hill, which kind of makes the search function a bit of a nightmare, so I've added all the words.

Iodine, quite umami, porcini mushroom, dark fruit and liquorice, a little spicy biscuit and cedar oak in tow. Medium-bodied, dark fruit and spice, earth and dark chocolate, tannin has grip and fleshiness, a little rugged maybe, but sits well within the wine, and the finish is pretty deep and earthy, with some boysenberry freshness to close. Quite savoury, but kind of typical OP & OH in that way. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  5. Mount Pleasant 1880 vines Old Hill Shiraz 2021
Mount Pleasant 1880 vines Old Hill Shiraz 2021

Hand picked in three passes, three-day cold soak, nine days on skins, 12 months in French oak. Aromas of fresh earth and leather are matched by red berry and plum fruits, all replayed on the medium-bodied palate. It's the overall juicy freshness and elegance that define this wine and its terroir. (98) JAMES HALLIDAY

From 141 year old vines, it says on the front label. Curiously, I'm tasting this from a Penfolds branded Shiraz glass, and the contrast could not be more stark. I'm not sure why I have this glass, well, I do know I grabbed it out of the cupboard, though I don't know where it came from. I reckon it must be something my partner was given some years back?

So clean, such a pure expression of Hunter Shiraz. Boysenberry, raspberry, perfume of aniseed and roses, a discreet sweet soil earthiness. It's medium-bodied, gentle but tightly packed tannin, fresh feel, expressive and bursting with just-ripe berry flavour, and a super long finish that shows some iron and subtly earthy, and classic, Hunter red fruit. Wonderful. So very good. What a superb wine! (97) GARY WALSH, The Wine front

  6. Brokenwood Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay 2022
    Brokenwood Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

Marvellous chardonnay. Flavoursome, flinty, fleshy and complete. Stonefruits and white flowers, cedarwood and meal, a quartz-like aspect and plenty of struck match. But harmonious at every single turn. And then there's the finish, which is seriously well sustained. One sip and I was convinced. The score could well be stingy. (95+) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winefront.com

The sort of wine that unravels with air, from a torque of initial restraint, to a more open weave. Fine contemporary chardonnay, delivered with a cooler climatic edge and Australia's typical clarity of fruit and suffusion of tension. Granitic. Sub-alpine. A meld that delivers gentle stone fruit allusions, kumquat and a seam of oak, impeccably integrated… NED GOODWIN MW, jamessuckling.com

Aussie winelovers need little prompting when it comes to elite Chardonnay from the Beechworth region which is home to some of our very best. This wine, mostly from the Mendoza clone, sees whole bunch pressing and a wild yeast ferment in new French oak, which is mostly 500-litre puncheons. A lean, pale yellow hue, this is obviously still very young, indeed almost raw, but it is certainly coming together. We have notes of citrus and cashews, with melon and peach. A minerally backing, juicy acidity and impressive length. This will be better in 12 months and should drink beautifully for the following five to six years, possibly considerably more.
