Cote Lavande Malbec 2020A little Languedoc love here. We were suitably impressed by this littles number when this along with its brother and sister wine crossed our path. The philosophy here is to create a classic range of Southern French wines, produced by the enigmatic Château Canet estate in the Languedoc, Côte Lavande is supposed to be fun and care-free.
Many shades of black fruits here with a delicate hint of liquorice and wafts of savoury dried herbs. Medium pushing into the lower side of full there is a seriousness about the wine with its fine sinewy structure and softly brooding palate that’s really appealing. That sweet mulberry fruit shines through while everything is nicely in its place. Smart winemaking here that really shines.

Fontareche Corbieres Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2022The Fontarèche property, at the heart of Corbiere in Languedoc-Roussillon, has a long, illustrious and noble history dating back to 1201. Current proprietor, Jacques de Lamy took over from his father, Count Edouard de Lamy in 1957 where the de Lamy family has been in charge of the property since 1682. The estate works with 17 grape varieties, but Carignan is their jewel in the crown. The vines are planted to the semi-desert Mediterranean climate trapped between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The Atlantic breezes funnel through the mountain ranges that form the backdrop of the region and help to temper the summer heat in the vineyards retaining freshness and vibrancy in the wines.
Wonderfully lifted notes of violets, mulberry and blue fruits all underlined with gentle minerality. The palate is brimming with a core of dark fruits that come together nicely with a focused and energetic finish. It really is surprising the level of subtle complexity at this price point that remains so easy to drink at the same time

Francois Carillon Cap Au Sud Chardonnay 2021Plenty of weight here which comes as a lovely surprise the first time you take a look at it. Hits the ripe stone fruit and slightly exotic register but with air it tightens up significantly and turns on the southern charm. Fleshy, nice volume and intensity, no lack of freshness but this nails the succulent and juicy mark, offering up all the bits you want from a great Chard that drinks like it was made for the table. Upfront and loaded up with pleasure on all fronts. Southern Chard made by a master from Burg and it shows. Well played. This is should be on your highlight reel for summer. I particularly like flesh and richness here, it straddles the line between buxom and zippy, so much fun in the tank. Just a dead set lovely wine that is ready and raring to go. Its 40% Grenache Noir, 30% Carignan, 30% Syrah from vines 30 to 40 years old on average and a blend of about 20 small parcels on schists. Organic, mostly destemmed and fermented with ambient yeast in closed concrete tanks for 7 days, then pressed and racked back to tank to finish fermentation. No temperature control. No punching down or pump overs. Aged in tank for approximately 10 months. No fining, light filtration. Total sulfur at bottling 30 to 50ppm. Courbissac Les Traverses Rouge Minervois 2021Les Traverses is drawn from the estate’s younger vines. It’s a blend of roughly equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, hand-harvested from 11 parcels surrounding the cellar in the heart of Cesseras within the La Livinière Cru of the Minervois appellation. As with all Claux’s wines, the fruit is farmed biodynamically and natural whole-bunch fermentation occurs in concrete vat with minimal sulphur. The grapes are gently foot-stomped, followed by six months in concrete. Bottled at 13%, this is cracking value, as always: a supple and juicy red with spicy brambly fruit and delicious plum-skin tanginess.
