  1. Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape 2017
Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape 2017
Full shimmering ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe boysenberry, Chambord and Asian spices, and a sexy floral nuance gains strength with air. Sweet and seamless on the palate, displaying a suave blend of power and delicacy to the concentrated red and blue fruit, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors. Shows impressive energy and a mineral quality on the gently tannic, penetrating finish, which hangs on with strong, floral-driven tenacity. JOSH RAYNOLDS

Immediately a sense of darker fruit in this vintage. The nose has closed up a little since tasting in barrel. It has some reserved, sanguine notes and an essence-like raspberry core. Some stones and chalk here, too. Very long and focused palate. The grenache is singing here. Dense but soft and supple tannins, the product of thick, healthy skins. Best from 2025. JAMES SUCKLING

  2. Marcoux Chateauneuf du Pape 2019
    Marcoux Chateauneuf du Pape 2019
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed beautifully, with a deeper ruby/purple color as well as incredible Provençal notes of peppery garrigue, dried flowers, and jammy red and black berry fruits. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a great mid-palate, loads of building tannins, a solid spine of acidity, and a big finish. This is one smoking good, classic cuvée that savvy readers should snatch up. It will have 10-15 years of prime drinking. JEB DUNNUCK

Saturated ruby. Ripe black raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper, allspice and pungent flowers. Supple, appealingly sweet red and blue fruit preserve flavors gain energy with air, and a bright mineral element adds back-end lift. 4. Charvin Cotes du Rhone Le Poutet 2020
Charvin Cotes du Rhone Le Poutet 2020
The nose carries a light essence of cooked plum fruit, strawberry jam, pepper, peony. It’s wide, will emerge and evolve well. The palate is close-knit, herbal-peppery, lined with red cherry, brisk fruits, cut in the tannins that still stand a little on the outside. Its frame is a bit skeletal, can amplify. There is rocky powder emphasis on the close, the length good. I like its gradual upping of the tempo, depth. It has interest, hidden corners, is not an open book. “It’s very fresh, always had foundation. 2019 is powerful, but 2020 bears jolis fruits, has true class, an identity,” Laurent Charvin. JOHN LIVINGSTON-LEARMONTH, drinkrhone.com,

A bold and expressive Cotes-du-Rhone with excellent wild blackberry fruit plus notes of meat and licorice. A big and well-structured wine that gets a real kick at the finish from the crunchy freshness. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. STUART PIGGOT, James Suckling

Remejeanne Un Air de Cotes du Rhone 2021 1500ml
No one… ever paid much attention to the wines of the out-of-the-way village of Sabran - until a careful, thoughtful winemaker like Rémy Klein came along." ANDREW JEFFORD, The New France

Proprietor Rémy Klein is one of the most consistently top-flight winemakers among the Côtes du Rhone producers. ROBERT PARKER

Full of bright red fruits, just picked raspberry and crushed cherry intermingled with a bouquet garny of lavender, sage, thyme and a top-not of violet that adds a little bit of prettiness to the nose. Lovingly crafted in a pure elegant style with lots of nascent energy at its core that gives it some wonderful vitality. Supple with perfectly ripe fruits and sweet caress of fine tannin.

  7. Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2012
Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2012
The wine of the vintage is the Perrins' 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin, which has a classic, sexy, accessible style yet is also going to age beautifully. Massive amounts of smoked black fruits, ground pepper, iodine, truffle, and bloody meat all emerge from this inky colored behemoth. With full body, building tannins, no hard edges, and a rock star of a finish, it’s primary and youthful, but incredible. Ideally, it would be given another 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for another 3 decades or more. It’s an awesome wine! (99) JEB DUNNUCK

  8. Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2013
Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2013
The same can be said for the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin, as this insanely impressive barrel sample transcends the vintage. Full-bodied, decadent and layered, with massive concentration and purity, it’s loaded with black and blue fruits, violets, truffle, licorice and assorted floral notes. This cuvee always shows fabulous fruit in its youth, and it doesn’t start to gain its hallmark gaminess until after a few years in bottle. In addition, this cooler vintage, with its ample moisture and autumn summer, produced Mourvedre with off-the-charts aromatic purity and perfect ripeness. It will clearly be in the top 1-2 wines and will have 3-4 decades of longevity (100) JEB DUNNUCK, Wine Advocate

Extremely aromatic with blueberries, blackberries, and flowers. Full- bodied, dense, and rich yet agile and exciting. The tannins are seamless and beautiful. The finish shows stones and spices. The ancient mourvedre in the blend gives this wine elegance. Incredible depth. So drinkable now but goes on for minutes. Fantastic Hommage... (98) JAMES SUCKLING

  10. Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape 2020
Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape 2020

Such a deep and meaty nose with a slew of wild-herb, savory and subtle balsamic notes. Then comes the expansive and very concentrated palate, which reveals so many spicy nuances as it rolls over the palate, the stunning fine tannins pushing the finish out even further. A grenache-based blend from 60-year-old vines.(97) JAMES SUCKLING

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape also showed well, with a lighter, elegant style that still brings plenty of intensity. Black cherries, mulberries, dried violets, and loamy earth define the bouquet, and it’s medium-bodied, balanced, and finesse driven on the palate, with ripe tannins as well as a terrific sense of salinity on the finish. Give bottles 3 4years and enjoy over the following 15+.JEB DUNNUCK

Tasted as a tank sample of the final blend, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape La Crau is a blend of approximately 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 5% other permitted varieties, with about 30% whole bunches used in the ferments. Marked by ripe cherries and hints of complex garrigue notes on the nose, it’s full-bodied but also really elegant, with fine-grained, silky tannins, ample concentration and a long, surprisingly crisp finish.JOE CZERWINSKI

  11. Cayran Cotes du Rhone 'Pas de la Beaume' 2021
Cayran Cotes du Rhone 'Pas de la Beaume' 2021

Cave de Cairanne is a cooperative founded in 1929 in the heart of the Cru's of Southern Rhone. A total of 65 growers make up the Cooperative with a majority of their vineyard area being run Organically. The vines are predominately located in and around the town of Cairanne and mostly facing the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux.

In the winery the same mindset of the most artisanal producers is followed. Either minimal or no sulphur, concrete tanks and wines spend time on their fine lees for silkiness and protection against oxygen The results are wines of freshness, personality, texture, silkiness, structure, elegance and finesse. All of this is achieved at some seriously sharp pricing. A very very good effort!

A tight and primary nose with a nuance of crushed, dried violets that lift from the enveloping wild black and blue berry spectrum. With time in the glass fruit builds and matches spice and mountain herbs. The tannins are ripe and wrapped in bright red fruit. There is a lovely 2021 vintage stamp of freshness that is laced around the fruit and structure.

  12. Beaucastel Coudoulet Cotes du Rhone 2020
Beaucastel Coudoulet Cotes du Rhone 2020

The 2020 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel continues this cuvée's hot streak. A blend of approximately 30% each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, with 10% Carignan, it boasts attractive floral overtones, hints of crushed stone and ripe cherry fruit. Full-bodied and impressively silky for such a young wine, it should be drinkableupon release and for at least a decade thereafter. Best after 2022. JOE CZERWINSKI, Wine Advocate

Bottled a month ago, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet sports a vivid ruby hue and is a blend of 30% each of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, with the balance Cinsault. It’s a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has lots of ripe red and blue fruits as well as notes of peppery garrigue and leather. Drink this juicy, elegant Côtes Du Rhône over the coming decade. JEB DUNNUCK

Deep, savory nose with notes of ripe black cherries and plum cake, plus minty and floral notes. In spite of the considerable power and generous tannin, this is very focused and elegant. The long, energetic finish suggests this has years of life ahead of it. JAMES SUCKLING

  13. Saint Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2021
Saint Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2021

Domaine Saint-Damien has been producing some of the region's most elegant wines for years, but for some reason they rarely get the attention they deserve. Pricing here is also admirably fair, which makes this an address to be reckoned with for savvy Rhône wine lovers. These wines are now consistently delivering some of the southern Rhône's greatest values in high-end wine. JOSH RAYNOLDS 2020

As always my pick for this tasting changes, swerves and sways throughout the year. I'd 100% settled on my pick a little while ago. When asked by Myles what it was I told him, 21 Humbrecht Jebsal Gris. How do you beat that wine???
With 21 st Damien Gigondas. It was about a week later over a bottle that I changed my mind. Not because the Gris isn't as good, it's off the wall, but because the St D is as good but it backs up a current bent of mine, getting people back to the Rhone.
This is so good and delivers everything I love from the south. Authenticity. Sense of place. Value. The all important "smashability". I drank this last bottle with a tbone and some ribs cooked over the coals of a fire pit out of a terrible glass and it was perfect!
Delivers sensuality and generosity of fruit that runs the gamut of crunchy bright red through black currant juice. Spice, tough, hardy garrrigue, a roasted masala but the kind I use for some of my Sri Lankan curries.
Plenty of joy here, it's ideal to throw down with dinner, but quite a serious bottle of wine with a decade or more of growth ahead.
As Josh Raynolds wrote in Vinous Media "Get it, lots of it, if you can." I do concur! ROSCOE HALLIGAN-ROSE, PWS

Vivid ruby. A highly fragrant bouquet evokes candied red fruits, smoky minerals and lavender; a spicy nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, juicy raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors show good heft, seamless texture and real energy. It finishes spicy and impressively long, with sneaky tannins adding a final grip. This is shaping up to be a highly impressive entry-level bottling, which is not surprising given that this is the only Gigondas that will be bottled this year, so all the juice from the Louisiane and Souteyrades is going into this wine. Get it, lots of it, if you can. Raised in neutral, 50 hectoliter oak foudres. (95) JOSH RAYNOLDS

  14. Domaine la Roubine Gigondas 2021
    Domaine la Roubine Gigondas 2021

    70% Grenache - 15% Mourvèdre - 15% Syrah

Cherry and dark plum infused with herbs and lavender and a backbeat of crushed rock make for a heady aromatic which keeps you going back for another sniff as different provencal herbs move in and out of range. Black fruits parry with red and blue and always a coolness from the mineral. The palate hits with deeply pitched dark fruits and dried herbs. It's succulent and rich but there's a coolness to the fruit and drawn out elegance to the tannin profile that ultimately elevates the wine to a more serious level. It's a crazy juxtaposition whereby, the rusticity and deep connection to the place is on show but also there's a wonderful elegance to the tannins. Just fantastic Gigondas. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

Full plum and spice aromas that are augmented by stacks of earthy character on the generous and well-balanced palate. Full, supple and very satisfying spicy and terra-cotta finish. A cuvee of grenache, syrah, cinsault and mourvedre. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

Domaine la Roubine La Grange de Briguieres Sablet 2021

    70% Grenache - 25% Syrah - 5% Cinsault

Ahh Sablet from Roubine. Is there a more popular wine for PWS staff members? Just a glass full of joy with a serious edge. Dark fruits, cherry liqueur and cooked down raspberry vie with a blast of tapenade and hung meat and mineral. Rollicking and rich as it travels across the palate, the fruit is always there, as is the rusticity and savouriness innate in the breed, but it's winemaker Ughetto's special skill to retain all of that muscle and sinew and then somehow give the wine a more tempered tannin profile. Simply delicious as it always is and cans tand up to 8 years cellaring.  MICHAEL MCNAMARA

A touch of mulberry, wild forest fruits, fresh smashed berries, and a hint of creme de mure. Some of the heady perfume from last year is dialled down a little here but still a lovely cadence of sweet and savoury spice. Plush and ripe fruit but synched in with some fresh acidity and some lithe tannins that detail the finish that gives the wine some lovely buoyancy. Tidy little package this year. JAMES SUCKLING

    Domaine la Roubine Vacqueyras 2021

    70% Grenache - 15% Mourvèdre - 15% Syrah
Red and blue fruits, violet and lavender lift, some tapenade elements. Beautiful lilting aromatics. The palate is supple, plush and slippery couching raspberry and black cherry alongside some licorice and mineral. Open and charming across the palate but also cinched in by a thread of acidity and balancing quite fine (for the region) tannins. Pure and built for joy. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

A touch of fresh crushed raspberry, some black cherry, and a wild earthen note pocked with meadow herbs. It's all turned up a notch with an extra level of concentration and broad, sweeping fruit and flavour that envelopes the palate then slowly melts away leaving earthy, charred herbs and a little wild note on the close. A bit of rustic charm dare we use the phrase here but in all the right ways and a lovely layering of savoury and sweet throughout. JAMES SUCKLING

Moving to the 2019s, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône offers just about everything you could want from Côtes Du Rhône and is medium-bodied and textured, with complex notes of ripe darker cherries, violets, and pepper, supple tannins, and outstanding length. While I always say you should drink these in the first 4-5 years or so, these actually are capable of evolving for at least a decade. JEB DUNNUCK

Dark ruby. Spice-accented cherry and black raspberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of pungent flowers and cola. Fleshy and energetic in the mouth, offering nicely concentrated red and blue fruit flavors that tighten up steadily with air. Shows very good energy and lift on a long, gently tannic finish that leaves behind repeating red fruit and spice notes. JEB DUNNUCK

A benchmark entry-level Côtes du Rhône from a classic Rhône Valley producer. A medium aromatic intensity of blackberries, spice, and black pepper. The palate is textured and serves the same dark fruit plus spice notes. The wine (like most Côtes du Rhônes) shines with food. DECANTER
