  1. Callejuela Macharnudo Manzanilla 2014 500ml
    Callejuela Macharnudo Manzanilla 2014 500ml

The fruit is from 'la Choza' vineyard inside Pago Macharnudo, and classified as a palma.

Deep gold with just a fringe of bronze. Salt caramel nose is brilliant with spicy dried Seville orange rind, and a great depth of real perfume, seductive rather than heady, really beautiful. Deeper and earthier again, pecans and rye toast, barley and lots of spicy cake-bakey goodness. Sweet and sour and really dynamic in the mouth, it's round and lifted, with barley water edged by chalk-starch and the whole thing open, vibrant and welcoming. TSA

  2. Larmandier Bernier Terre de Vertus 1er Cru Non Dose 2014
Larmandier Bernier Terre de Vertus 1er Cru Non Dose 2014

One of our key wine team members in Sydney, Alex Dobson has chosen this for his staff pick for 2021, here's why:

The pure mineral expressions of Chardonnay from Larmandier Bernier were the first that drew me to grower Champagne and if you love incredibly fine, pure and precise Champagnes that aren't plumped up with dosage, then this is going to be right up your alley. The 2014 Terre de Vertus  is drawn from the two 1er Cru vineyards of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets in Vertus which are particularly renowned for their chalky, mineral character and this Champagne delivers those in spades leaning savoury and mouth-wateringly saline on the finish. Give this a little time to open and shake out it’s feathers and then pair it up with oysters and fried fish for a pairing that will make this Champagne sing. Grab a few more bottles for the cellar though as this one will really grow into itself with a few more years under it’s belt. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

  3. Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

86/6/4/3/1% cabernet sauvignon/petit verdot/malbec/merlot/cabernet franc. Reaching heights of near perfection, '18 was a vintage responsible for wines just like this. Supple intensity, concentration of flavour without a gram of weight, the length of flavour possessed only by very healthy, perfectly ripe and balanced grapes. What a gloriously seamless wine, continuing the proud legacy of Parterre. Drink by 2041. (96) ERIN LARKIN, Wine Companion

Sporting a slightly different label now, with the house in a fetching sort of purple. The splash of colour works well. Here we have 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc all grown on the estate at Wilyabrup.

Blackberry and boysenberry, sage and mint, fetching floral perfume, baking spice and vanilla custard oak. It’s medium-bodied with pleasing density of fruit, plenty of fine grained graphite tannin, cool acidity, so svelte and composed, with a long pencilly finish. Needs a little more time for the oak to integrate, but the feel of it, its balance and shape, mark it out as an excellent wine. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  4. Pierre Gimonnet Special Club Cramant Grand Cru 2014
Pierre Gimonnet Special Club Cramant Grand Cru 2014
The 2014 Brut Spécial Club is a blend of fruit taken mostly from Cramant, with Chouilly and Cuis in supporting roles. The breadth and power of Cramant comes through loud and clear. Readers will find a potent, at times austere, Champagne that needs a bit of time in the cellar to soften. The Special Club does not offer the immediacy of the Chouilly or Cramant Special Clubs, but it has plenty of its own allure. Dried pear, spice, crushed flowers and chamomile are some of the aromas and flavors that linger on the imposing finish. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 13, 2019. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous 2020

  5. Louis Roederer Cristal 2014
    Louis Roederer Cristal 2014
The 2014 Cristal is another in a long line of gorgeous wines from Roederer and long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. A dazzling, vibrant Champagne, the 2014 impresses with a stunning combination of fruit density and linear energy that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of 2012 and 2008. At times, the bubbles feel totally wrapped up in waves of creamy, resonant fruit to the point the mousse is barely perceptible, especially with aeration. The flavors are bright and finely sculpted, leaning very much into the citrus, floral and mineral end of the spectrum.
The blend is a classic: 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay taken from 39 of the 45 parcels that comprise the Cristal estate. The 2014 Cristal is a riveting Champagne. Don't miss it. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI

Medium straw-yellow colour, with a super-complex bouquet that summons nougat, almond-iced pastries, peanut brittle and lemon juice. A hint of milk powder. The palate is searingly intense and powered by vivacious lemony acidity, while the creaminess of the mousse is exquisite. The finish is very long and refined, the texture creamy and seamless in its effortless flow. A wonderful wine, but the acidity is challenging solo and it really cries out for food, even something as simple as oysters. I'd give it more time to lose its austerity. (98) HUON HOOKE

An enlightened expression from a season of extremes, this has intensity, ripeness and depth of fruit that is underpinned by chalk soil-derived structure and freshness. Complex nose with lemon and grapefruit aromas, as well as closed red apple, blood orange, light biscuit spices and toasted hazelnuts. Super fresh. The palate starts pithy and fleshy with pink grapefruit, blood orange, red apple, sliced strawberry and nectarine. Expansive and mouth-filling build that is driven by concentrated fruit, Then it tightens and turns to a more mineral edge, before smoothly honed phenolics finish it long. It is 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, 32% oak fermentation in those same proportions, no chaptalization, no malolactic and a dosage of 7g per liter. From organically farmed grapes. Very complex, it strikes a natural balance and is very drinkable already, though will develop well for more than a decade in the cellar. (97) JAMES SUCKLING

  6. Bollinger Grande Annee 2014
    Bollinger Grande Annee 2014
The 2014 La Grande Année is stunning. In fact, it is one of the best recent editions I can remember tasting. What comes through most is the wine's sizzling energy and tension, qualities that aren't often associated with Bollinger, where the Champagnes tend to show more breadth and volume. In 2014, readers will find a Grande Année built on linear intensity and drive.
The 2014 is a blend taken from 19 villages, 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay instead of the more typical 70/30 mix. For the second time in two decades (the first was 2007), Verzenay takes the lead in the Pinots over Aÿ, more or less an inverse from the norm. Verzenay, a north-facing village in the Montagne de Reims that saw less rain than Aÿ and most of the Vallée de la Marne, yields Pinots of energy more than volume. That, married with Chardonnays mostly from the Côtes des Blancs (predominantly Chouilly, Vertus, Oiry and Cramant), results in a truly magical Grande Année that will delight Champagne fans for several decades. I can't recommend the 2014 highly enough. It's a total knock-out. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI

Racy acidity drives this mouthwatering Champagne, enlivening the rich panoply of flavors. Features a fine and creamy mousse that's still a lively springboard for aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, glazed tangerine, roasted hazelnut, ground coffee, pickled ginger and white blossoms. Long and satiny, with minerally salt and chalk notes gaining momentum on the lasting finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. (97) WINE SPECTATOR

  7. Vilmart Emotion 2014
    Vilmart Emotion 2014
60% Pinot, 40% Chardonnay from vines averaging 60 years. This spends 6 years on lees.
Vilmart's 2014 Brut Rosé Emotion is laced with sweet dried cherry, dried herbs, blood orange and mint. It offers terrific breadth for the year, with the Pinot more in evidence than in the 2015 tasted alongside it (the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay for both). Eight grams of dosage feels expertly judged. Disgorged: February 2022. ANTONIO GALLONI

  8. Vieux Chateau Certan 2014
    Vieux Chateau Certan 2014
    Pomerol

One of the unquestioned stars of the vintage, the 2014 Vieux Château Certan soars out of the glass with aromatic intensity, bright acids and finely sculpted fruit. Cool, intense but very much reserved in the style of the year, the 2014 exudes class. The flavors are intense and vibrant throughout. Dark red and purplish-hued stone fruit, lavender, mint and spice lead into the striking finish. The 2014 is just as impressive today as it was from barrel. As always, Vieux Certan has the rare ability to confer power without excess weight. The 2014 is a magical bottle. Readers who can find it should not hesitate. The blend is back to classic proportions of 80 % Merlot and 20 % Cabernet Franc. (97+) ANTONIO GALLONI

  9. Sottimano Fausoni Barbaresco 2020
    Sottimano Fausoni Barbaresco 2020
The 2020 Barbaresco Fausoni takes all the elegance of the 2019 and turns up the dial one more notch. Deep and explosive, the 2020 captures all the best this vintage had to offer. A rush of dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol, salt, lavender and rose petal builds as the 2020 saturates every corner of the palate. Here, too, the balance of fruit, acid and tannin is simply masterful. (97+) ANTONIO GALLONI

The fragrant 2020 Fausoni from Sottimano is sublime, offering enticing scents of violet, rose, perfumed berry and camphor that mix with earthy whiffs of leather and forest floor. Lithe and elegantly structured, the vibrant palate offers pomegranate, blood orange, licorice and a hint of game before a saline mineral close. Agile, close-grained tannins and bright acidity keep it structured and balanced. This is one of the most age-worthy Barbarescos of the vintage. Drink 2028-2038. (95) KERIN O'KEEFE

  10. Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2017
    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2017

At 6 years of age on release, the colour is just starting to show some development with yellow tints complimenting the green edges. Lifted lemon curd and floral notes heading to bees wax, brioche and toast. Lively Tahitian lime juice characters are backed by a superb, zesty acidity. The magic of Hunter Valley semillon on display with texture, fruit weight and great length from a wine that sees no oak. The ILR Reserve Semillon is released only from the best years and the 2017 is a beauty. (97) Best in Show - 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards

From one of the masters of developed semillon, helped in this instance by the great semillon vintage. Its bouquet suggests the use of oak - not true. It's a hypnotic wine, with Meyer lemon driving the citrus circus and the wheels of acidity. (98) JAMES HALLIDAY

Few semillons scale the heights of consistency and excellence that this wine does. August 2023 release.
It's got gentle development in faint creaminess to texture, despite the chalky pucker and chew. Scents show off nougat, light honey toastiness, lime, lemon, dried apple. It's lovely to take a big whiff of and the palate echoes those characters well. Tense acidity is a mainstay, the length of flavour extreme and palate staining in a gentle sense. The gentle development lends a sweetness to fruit, but geez, that pure, cool, citrusy and mineral-laden acidity is a force. It's wonderfully balanced and extremely good. (96+) MIKE BENNIE

  11. Ronchi di Cialla Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2014
Ronchi di Cialla Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2014

The 2014 Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso di Cialla is a darkly alluring and rich red, with brown spice, smoked meats and ground coffee giving way to woodland berries. Savory red fruits and exotic spice offset a lovely inner sweetness, all enriched by a touch of hazelnut. Soft tannins, ginger and sour citrus are left lingering as the 2014 tapers off almost juicy in feel. This is a unique style of the Refosco, courtesy of the difficult 2014 vintage, but one that any fan of Ronchi di Cialla should not be without. Eric Guido, Vinous 2023

    Forman Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Beguiling, aromatically expressive and super-nuanced, Ric Forman's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up to be one of the successes of the year. Knockout aromatics reminiscent of a top-flight Chambertin or Barolo open up in the glass first. Crystalline and pure, the 2014 offers a compelling array of raspberry jam, spice, mint and sweet floral notes. The bright, salivating finish is a thing of beauty. This exceptionally pure, riveting Cabernet Sauvignon has it all going on. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI

  13. Ayala Blanc de Blanc 2016
    Ayala Blanc de Blanc 2016

The 2016 Le Blanc de Blancs is one of the better wines I have tasted here of late. Exuberant and quite expressive, the 2016 soars with cents of lemon confit, marzipan and sweet spice, all in a forward, open-knit style that offers good near-term appeal. All this needs is a bit more focus in its bouquet, but is still a big step up from the past. Light tropical accents linger on the close. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

  14. Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 1500ml
Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 1500ml
Dark ruby. Captivating violet lift to the aromas and flavors of cassis, kirsch, licorice and mocha. Plush and fine-grained; extremely deep in the middle palate but this extremely rich wine impresses as much for its finesse as for its sheer density and power. Finishes with wonderfully harmonious tannins and great slow-mounting length. Owing to its sheer density and baby fat, the wine is edge-free from the start, but it's likely to evolve at a snail's pace and last for decades. (13.9% alcohol). STEPHEN TANZER

  15. Vincent Delaporte Sancerre 2022
    Vincent Delaporte Sancerre 2022
Delaporte's 2021 Sancerre Chavignol is a classic cooler expression of Sauvignon in Sancerre with youthful aromas of lemon, gooseberry, crisp apples and green capsicum. While light in body, there is an element of weight and texture that augments the wine's volume and softens its edges. The finish is bright yet balanced but rather brief. However, an attractive chalky note persists, providing interest and tension. REBCCA GIBB MW, Vibous

Guigal Cote Rotie La Turque 2014
Now that it's in bottle, the 2014 Cote Rotie La Turque has exceeded all of my earlier expectations. It's got those classic Côte Rôtie elements on the nose of smoked bacon, olives and violets, seamlessly entwined with supple tannins and raspberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky and fine, showing tremendous length and complexity on the finish. On this occasion, La Turque came to the head of the class as the most approachable, exciting and elegant of the three La Las. (98) WINE ADVOCATE

Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache 2017
This 2017 old vine Grenache 1850 Ancestor Vine is a little shy at first but then shows breathtaking purity of dark cherry and musky plum with some more exotic cinnamon stick and red licorice hints. The 2017 is beautifully textured and weighted, and despite quite serious underlying power, it remains light on its feet. The excellent vibrancy of fruit is on show and slowly builds layer upon layer of savory roasted meat complexity. Strong ironstone adds backbone to a delightfully perfumed finish. It's a world beater with killer length and the best 1850 yet from Cirillo. (98) ANGUS HUGHSON, vinous.com

Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne 2014 1500ml
The 2014 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is fabulous. It is a bright, airy Charlemagne bursting at the seams with tons of class. Lemon peel, crushed rocks and white pepper are some of the many notes that are laced together in the 2014. There is a feeling of phenolic intensity on the finish that is very distinctive. I would prefer to cellar the 2014 for at least a few years, as it is really not ready to offer maximum pleasure yet. Thirty percent of the harvest was lost to hail that year. ANTONIO GALLONI
