Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2020

A richer style to serve with cheese or seafood
The nose is full of finesse and still is a little closed. Pinot-Gris is not an aromatic grape variety, so we find in this style of wine an aroma marked by the terroir (citrus fruits) and also the aging on total lees (grilled, toasted, fresh humus, etc.). The attack is delicate and fine. Of medium power, this wine retains its airy lightness because it has a crisp acidity, especially on the finish (it is after all a small Windsbuhl!). The balance is off-dry but the sugars are barely perceptible as the finish is straight and pure. OLIVIER HUMBRECHT MW

Caramelized-pear and very ripe melon and guava notes pour from the glass of this rich but only demi-sec Alsace pinot gris. Notes of cinnamon and allspice that you don't find in the nose. Then comes the bright, chalky acidity that beautifully balances the creaminess and spice at the long finish. Just 12.4% alcohol, yet ripe through and through. STUART PIGGOT, jamessuckling.com

  3. Schmolzer & Brown Pret A Blanc 2022
    Schmolzer & Brown Pret A Blanc 2022

And the kitchen sink… pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, riesling and sylvaner from King Valley all blended up nice ‘n’ pretty. Judiciously, I bet too.

Texture and freshness, summery feel and high drinkability. Kicking goals. It’s in that vein of pleasing, Schweppers Bitter Lemon soft drink territory, a gently fruitiness, sweetness, dryness, bitterness, all just so and very vibrant and refreshing. A bit of alpine herbiness in the mix too. Squeaky textured and mouth-watering as to finish. Ripper drink. MIKE BENNIE, Wine Front

They say it’s based on the Austrian Gemischter Satz style of field blended dry white wine… cool.

Tangy, fresh, lively with wafts of the exotic, something that reminds me a little of a wet season evening in our place in Darwin, it’s that mix of petrichor and tropical flowers like wild ginger and lemongrass. Really quite a lot going on aromatically as the parts vie for prime position. Some stone/pome fruit and herbal elements as well. Keeps you excited. The palate is sizzling, so tasty, with a burst of fruitfulness that tilts its head towards texturally rich while remaining oh so bright and clear. Really long. Thirst slacking stuff but also makes you want to drink more. I can tell you for experience this is not a one glass kind of wine. I would love to see how it evolves in the bottle but, as I mentioned earlier, I am already out of stock in my stash. Great stuff. Drinking it will make you a happier person. It couldn’t be any more joyful if the Dalai Lama himself had made it using the tears of unicorns and fermented it in gold encrusted tanks lined with rubies found at the end of a rainbow ?? ROSCOE

  4. Pike Road - By Elk Cove Chardonnay 2020
Pike Road - By Elk Cove Chardonnay 2020
Green apples, spiced nectarines, fennel and subtle nougat aromas on the nose allude to its underlying ripeness. On the palate, clever winemaking adds flavours of brioche and hazelnuts, adding to the wine's texture and flavour profile. Earthy notes of wet rocks and white button mushrooms temper the spice and fruit. The finish is pulled together by a lovely line of saline phenolics which adds to the tension and energy. 5. Ravensworth Estate Seven Months 2021
    Ravensworth Estate Seven Months 2021
Whoa. That colour. Ruddy! Scents of tangy vermouth, alpine herbs, tart cherry, some floral whiffs and honey, gewurz shows its hand. The palate is slick then really chewy, wow, tannin plus, the cider apple pucker and dryness for the finish. Floral flavours, yes, vermouth-like for sure, the fruit and spice elements are strong. Wildly complex. Texture is amazing. Intriguing. A serious wine here. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

    Gilbert Blanc 2020
A blend of pinot gris, riesling and gewürztraminer grown in both Hilltops and Orange. White cherry blossom, acacia flowers, hints of musk and greengage plums. Green pear nectar and celery heart. Whilst the perfume of gewürztraminer takes the first foothold, it's the riesling that shines through with the ease of pinot gris’ palate weight. Fresh and lively, the English countryside comes to mind. SHANTEH WALE, James Halliday

  7. Kumeu River Village Pinot Gris 2023
Kumeu River Village Pinot Gris 2023

Made by Master of Wine Michael Brajkovich from sustainably grown Pinot Gris grapes that are hand-harvested and sorted in their Kumeu Vineyards then gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermented using local wild yeast with extended maturation on the yeast lees. This is always an absolute belter of a wine and 2023 has captured warm sunny fruit with zesty freshness making it just a little bit irrestable.

Lovely peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral perfume that gives it a little honsuclkle lift. he wine is brimming with energy that helps drive the perfectly sweet fruits. Love the balance here. This absolutely hits the spot.

  8. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal 2021
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal 2021

Hang on to your hat! Here’s a dense and dangerous wine for a grape most wine drinkers think can only give no-brainers. Very compact and structured with a dark personality that some may find shocking, but what makes it that way is the gypsum marl minerality that is its soul. Brain-rattling freshness at the super stony finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. (97) STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

The 2021 Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal is a monopole for Zind-Humbrecht. It is located between Brand and Heimbourg, utterly different from both, with calcareous marl and gypsum on south-facing terraces. In the past, this was dedicated to making sweeter wines with botrytis. The vines were planted in 1983. The nose has a flicker of reduction, followed by an aromatic notion of pear, freshly turned earth and orange peel. The palate has concentration and flow, a russet pear texture and a salty, cool, mouth-watering core. The saltiness is more intense than the fruit. The beautiful, bone-dry finish is very appetizing ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous Media

  9. The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020
The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020
This is the bar by which many Willamette Valley producers measure their own Pinot Gris. Made with certified organic grapes, the wine’s pale moonbeam colour casts its glow on aromas of orange blossom honey, lemon verbena and a trace of vanilla. Flavours of honeycomb, lemon sorbet and white grapefruit complement a lithesome texture backed by acidity that packs a pop.
    MICHAEL ALBERTY, Decanter

The low-yielding but high-quality 2020 season gave fruit of a density and concentration, Jason Lett categorising it alongside the greats of 1988 and 1998. Hand-picked fruit was destemmed, pressed and fermented in stainless steel tank before resting for 11 months on lees before bottling.

    Montinore Pinot Gris 2020
Certified organic and made with biodynamic grapes, the aromas are redolent with fruit, with notes of apple, pear, star fruit and whiffs of pineapple. The palate is medium weight and bursting with fruit flavors. Lively acid keeps it all in focus. It’s flat-out delicious. WINE ENTHUSIAST

An attractive nose of lemon, chamomile and thyme. Medium-bodied with zippy acidity. Green apple and white tea on the palate. Very bright. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

    Schmolzer & Brown Pret A Blanc 2023

Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Sylvaner and Riesling.

It’s painted in shades of green and yellow. Citrus, lemongrass, jasmine, Nashi pear, raw almond, parsley root, ground cucumber. Refreshing is its second name. Briny-chalky juice with a long flavour tail of yellow grapefruit, river stones and white pepper bite. Light and acidic and with an interesting sour-umami structure. I must add, SB stands tallest here. Lovely, graceful drop. KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front

  13. Te Kairanga Pinot Gris 2022
    Te Kairanga Pinot Gris 2022
The delicate light straw colour of our 2022 Pinot Gris transitions into elegant aromas of ripe nectarine, pear and blossom with notes of baking spice. The dry palate shows a refined texture with resonating fruit and impressive depth.

Partial barrel fermentation in seasoned French oak puncheons was used to add complexity and texture. Gentle handling ensures the expression of our special place. Balanced oak treatment and minimal fining and filtration help preserve both varietal character and the inimitable personality of the terroir
