  1. Fronton red La Colombiere Vinum Negrette 2020
Fronton red La Colombiere Vinum Negrette 2020
    STAGE 17 -  MOUNTAIN - SAINT-GAUDENS > PEYRAGUDES 130 KM

Just 30 mins north of Toulouse, some of France's rarest vines are painstakingly nursed back from extinction by husband and wife team Diane and Philippe Cauvin. Diane took the reigns of the family estate after learning viticulture and completing a tour de force throughout French vineyards including Burgundy. All made by hand with particular focus on the native negrette and biodnymically farmed since 2006.

Cranberries and sour cherry with a white pepper top-note greet you from the sunny and warmth filled glass. There is a generosity in the mouth with fleshy red fruits, the lightest touch of citrus pith and red cherries. The mid-weight style works well and no oak, just concrete tanks preserves the fresh cut flavours on the palate nicely.

  2. Trinity Hill 'Homage' Syrah 2018
    Trinity Hill 'Homage' Syrah 2018
This is a complex and very intense syrah that offers a deeply ripe yet fresh and clear-cut impression of blackberry and pepper, with other layers of spice, graphite and gently meaty notes. The palate is silky yet powerful with really finely layered tannins that cast a long, evenly built finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. (98) JAMES SUCKLING

The 2018 Homage Syrah includes a mere 0.4% Viognier, yet it boasts distinct scents of stone fruit on the nose, backed by red and black raspberries and hints of peppermint. It's only medium-bodied, in line with the trend over the past few vintages toward less power and (presumably) more finesse. In this vintage, it comes off a bit lacking in richness on the palate, although the wine's complexity—marrying mixed berries, violets, spice and herb notes, plus hints of licorice and coffee—makes this still a very enjoyable drink. Give it another couple of years in the cellar and drink it over the following decade or so. JOE CZERWINSKI, The Wine Advocate

Ultra floral scents, strawberry too, whiffs of flint and wet stone, clove and cedar in tow. The palate is sinewy, lightly chewy, very long, finely wrapped in a web of firm, ribbons of tannin. Feels very composed, almost a little mouth perfume and floral ‘flavours’ emerging too. Suitably elegant in its vibe. Great red. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  3. Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2020 375ml
Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2020 375ml
Medium ruby hue, with a bright and racy nose that’s full of pretty berries, redcurrants, fresh strawberries and potpourri. Medium-bodied and naturally juicy on the palate, showing lots of crunch and drinkability. Fresh, transparent and silky. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

2020 is a powerful vintage; it's structured and textured, the oak is very nicely integrated (12 months in barrel, but the powerful wine absorbed it completely), and it's powerful with 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.55, a little darker than in previous years. The tannins are very fine with a subtle chalky texture. There were 2,319 barrels that resulted in 672,000 bottles, 10,000 magnums and some larger and smaller formats. It was bottled from April 2022. 4. Alzinger Riesling Durnsteiner Federspiel 2022
    Alzinger Riesling Durnsteiner Federspiel 2022
The 2022 Riesling Dürnsteiner Federspiel was picked from various smaller parcels on the foot of the Loibenberg, including terraces of Loibenberg and Burgstall. Exquisitely pure bergamot notes are fragrant and enticing on the nose. The palate is chiseled, fine and taut, with a slightly riper note of citrus that reminds of Meyer lemon, yet still with the fragrant green citrus frisson. This is a bright, pure wine of exquisite slenderness and citrus fragrance. (Bone-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous
