Sicily
Sicily
A mere generation ago, there mightn't have been much to say here about Sicilian wine. Apart from Marsala, the reds were mostly sold in bulk to fatten up pale wines from cooler European vintages, or lost in the production of vermouth somewhere.
But with it's special place at the confluence of Mediterranean and North African cultures, there's been a modern day renaissance in wine and food here that is nothing short of a remarkable. Australians have an affinity for this blend of warm Mediterranean climate, migrant culture and vibrant food. Sicily just makes sense.
Red or white?
Red production is dominated by Nero d'Avola, grown in most regions across the island. Ranging from juicy medium bodied cherry fruited styles blended with the lighter Frappato, to sturdy dark, structured and plummy numbers that will appeal to Shiraz lovers.
Nerello Mascalese is exciting for its structured, fragrant and tannic wines, coming on high from the steep volcanic slopes of the still very active Mount Etna.
Surprisingly, there's also plenty of white planted here, chief among them Carricante. Distinctively refreshing with notes of smoke, cut herbs and lemon tonic.

Carricante, Grillo, Nero d'Avola, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese

Feudo Montoni Grillo Timpa 2021The most succulent ripe peach aromas complemented by hints of tangerine and fresh mint waft up from the 2021 Grillo Timpa. It is round and fleshy in feel, with sweet inner florals up front that give way to tropical melon and exotic spice. While a bit extroverted in character, there's plenty of stimulating acidity and sour citrus tones within to maintain fabulous balance. The 2021 leaves the palate completely refreshed with hints of kiwi and lime zest that linger. This really packs a punch, yet it never gets cloying or tiring. Tenuta Aglaea 'Lucifer' Bianco Sicilia IGT 2020A field blend of originally planted varieties of grecanico, cataratto, minella and carricante are harvested manually from old vines, some that are up to almost 100 years old. They sit in her prized Santa Spirito vineyard but due to the infamous Italian bureaucracy, the site is only designated for DOCG for red wines, so despite the age and quality of these incredible old bush vines she is only able to label the wine as an IGT. All steel tank ferment with some cold soaking to draw out texture and weight.
Fresh, mineral and saline and in a juicy style that opens with green apple nuances, bright stone fruits, light tropical notes and a hint of pineapple, and citrus pith. It's textural, fleshy, and tight. Salty and minerally, white pepper notes emboss the bright fruit profile. Delicate but at once vibrant and punchy. What a summer treat!2020Italy482$47.00 As low as $42.30 -
Vicoletto Nero D'Avola Terre Sicilia 2021Made from Nero d'Avola cultivated in northwestern Sicily. The soils are clay and sand, and the climate is very windy, cool, and dry. Small yields and dedicated winemaking combine to produce a wine that is fresh, versatile and enjoyable.
This vibrant red is bursting with fresh cherry flavour and aroma, and a delicate note of spicy liquorice on the finish. Punchy flavours with pastille red fruits and brisk flourish of crushed rock add a lovely savoury edge with a dollop of dark ground spice. Such a great little drop here that sings with energy and vibrant fruit.

Eduardo Torres Acosta Pierrera Nerello Mascalese 2020This bottling is 90% Nerello Mascalese and a 10% mix of other local varieties. The Pirrera site sits at 850 meters on the north side of Mt. Etna. The name is derived from the particularly rocky nature of the vineyard as well as the volcanic stones quarried from a 1614 lava flow. The vineyard had been abandoned decades before Eduardo took on its rehabilitation.
Vine age averages 50 years in age and is later picked then several other wines due to the elevated site. Bunches are generally destemmed but with some whole left in the ferments using indigenous yeasts in cement tanks without temperature control or sulfur. Maceration lasts about 15 days. The wine is aged for 16 months in concrete tanks and then bottled without fining or filtering and with a very small amount of sulfur.

He has since handed over the reigns to his daughters, Marilina and Federica who work organically with minimal intervention and no additives.

Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2022The 2022 Rosato Etna is understated and delicate, with dried strawberry and dusty florals forming its bouquet. This shows a pretty inner sweetness up front that gives way to crisp orchard fruits and spice. It finishes a bit dry, yet clean, with a saline-tinge that slowly tapers off. ERIC GUIDO, vinous.com
A pillowy core of rosehip, spiced cherries and spun sugar leads into a tangy line of acidity with a whisp of sea spray. Finely boned with excellent staying power, it's beautifully textured with a chalky presence. Pockets of detail emerge if you go looking, but the real beauty of this rosato is its poker face delivery which rolls out a thrilling mix of red fruits and minerals at just the right time, keeping you very keen and intent on your next sip. Tenute Orestiadi Molino a Vento Nerello Mascalese 2022
Grown in the red volcanic soils of Sicily it offers a pretty impressive look at nerello mascalese from this unique and fascinating region. This is all steel tank for freshness and a couple of months in barrique just to frame out the fruit. This is also the second vintage in a row we have stocked so you know it's good.
There is a little more verve and energy here but still runs a fairly consistent line of red currant, black raspberry with a little of that smokey, mineral edge that makes nerello such an interesting varietal. A little blood orange/amaro thing going on to which appealing and and a black peppercorn spice on the finish. Nailed it again.

The Girolamo Russo 2021 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo is a very exciting wine with so much energy and verve. It opens to lean-bodied concentration with a brilliant ruby shine. Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Cru Calderara Sottana 2021The Girolamo Russo 2021 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana emerges as one of the finest wines made on Etna in recent years. Alta Mora Etna Bianco 2021The 2021 Etna Bianco is fresh and nicely balanced with white peach and grapefruit that are contrasted against crushed mineral and volcanic ash. This crisp white wine proves highly drinkable and enjoyable thanks to that almost salty back end that would pair with fried shrimp or Thai spring rolls. It ages on the fine lees for six month. Fruit is sourced from across three contrade: Arrigo (in Linguaglossa), Verzella and Pietramarina. MONICA LARNER, www.robertparker.com
The 2021 Etna Bianco opens with a whiff of crushed stones and raw almonds, giving way to crushed green apples. It soothes with its round, enveloping textures. Zesty acidity and salty mineral tones add a reverberation of tension. It leaves a subtle tart tinge of sour melon while finishing pleasantly fresh and saline. ANTONIO GALLONI
