  1. Pala Silenzi Rosso Carignano Monica 2019
Pala Silenzi Rosso Carignano Monica 2019

Established by Salvatore Pala in 1950, today, sixty years later Mario Pala represents the third generation of the family to run this famous estate. Based in Sardinia, the vineyards of Azienda Agricola Pala are divided into five separate holdings according to their different terroirs.

This is a bit of a modern take on Sardinian wines with a bit of extra vibrancy and freshness that you don't always catch from the region. A blend of mainly carignan and a touch of locally grown monica. White pepper spice and a quartyz thing going on here with crushed raspberry and strawberry leaping out of the glass. There is a lovely warmth to the fruit, sweet and ripe with a buzz of snappy tannin and lick of fresh acidity. It's plush and crisp with a gentle grip.  MYLES, PWS

  2. Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2021 375ml
Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2021 375ml
Never judge a book buy it's cover right? Mostly, you see the colour of this and you at least know you are on good footing to begin with. It's pale, like a blush of peach. Properly dry with a splash of sweet citrus, mandarin, ripe red grapefruit, a just tart orange aspect and then some lovely peach notes. All this is underpinned by a bright, clear, palate cleansing freshness and a nice pithy texture that licks at the sides of your mouth. It's long and energising, it both slackens the thirst with its buoyant, uplifting feel and engages the old taste buds and sets the salivary glands quivering. Who doesn't love Rose like this? It's so enjoyable to drink. ROSCOE

  3. Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
This is the second vintage that Grenache has dominated the P&L blend. The 2022 is a blend of Grenache from Mangels Ranch in Suisun Valley, Cedar Lane in Arroyo Seco, and Waddington Ranch in Mendocino, Carignane from Lolonis, Maria Martinson, and Castañon all in Mendocino, and Syrah from Vecino in Potter Valley. There is a good amount of whole cluster and carbonic maceration through the lots keeping everything fresh and fun. As always, the blend was made immediately after harvest and the wine was aged in a combination of French oak foudres and stainless steel tanks.

Oh yum! This is such a joy to drink. A cracking drop here from the legend that is Kenny likitprakong of Hobo. He was telling us that this was his house wine. The one that he has cases of to rip the corks off when mates come round, the BBQ fires up and a long warm weekend is about a kick off and we can see why. This is hard to put down once it's in your glass.

It's all about the red fruits here with fresh picked red cherry and raspberry all vying for position at the front of the pack. Some pretty violet notes swirl around and as this opens up some savoury whole black peppercorn and foresty bits make themselves heard. Its lithe and fresh bursting onto the palate with that core of red berry fruit. Clean and pure just sizzling with energy. A joy to drink and would happily take a brief chill if you were so inclined.

  4. Fontareche Corbieres Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2022
Fontareche Corbieres Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2022
The Fontarèche property, at the heart of Corbiere in Languedoc-Roussillon, has a long, illustrious and noble history dating back to 1201. Current proprietor, Jacques de Lamy took over from his father, Count Edouard de Lamy in 1957 where the de Lamy family has been in charge of the property since 1682. The estate works with 17 grape varieties, but Carignan is their jewel in the crown. The vines are planted to the semi-desert Mediterranean climate trapped between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The Atlantic breezes funnel through the mountain ranges that form the backdrop of the region and help to temper the summer heat in the vineyards retaining freshness and vibrancy in the wines.

Wonderfully lifted notes of violets, mulberry and blue fruits all underlined with gentle minerality. The palate is brimming with a core of dark fruits that come together nicely with a focused and energetic finish. It really is surprising the level of subtle complexity at this price point that remains so easy to drink at the same time

  5. L´abrunet de Frisach 2021
    L´abrunet de Frisach 2021

Cherry garnet color with violet edges showing its youth. The nose is initially spicy, floral, dairy and ripe, round fruit with mineral notes. On the palate it is fresh, balanced by a good acidity, sensations of fresh fruit, with a final where the mineral sensations return. A broad, fresh and one of those wines you don’t get tired of drinking. BARRICA WINES

  6. Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2022
Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2022
A lovely lift of red cherries, pomegranate and white nectarines leads into a fleshy and textured core. Subtle herbal tones of fennel and dried thyme and wild strawberries join in the chorus too. There's presence and intensity thanks to the riper 2022 vintage, balanced by a spine of chalky acidity. Pleasing phenolics on the finish add a tantalising chew, like biting through peach skins. A hint of white pepper to finish adds a twist (reminds me of adding pepper to strawberries, shouldn't work but it does!). Keep this delightful thirst slaker on hand this summer. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

Around 60% Grenache with 30% Cinsault and a touch of the traditional Tibourenc grape the harvests are done at night to maintain freshness and the light maceration’s performed in temperature-controlled tanks to help maintain a wonderful lift to the wines. This results in a complex Rose that skirts the line beautifully between the richer Rose’s of Bandol but with the more delicate hand of Provence. PWS

  7. Ministry of Clouds Carignan Grenache 2022
Ministry of Clouds Carignan Grenache 2022

Blewitt Springs Grenache (1940’s plantings) with 30% Carignan from the estate vineyard in Seaview.

Pretty, raspberry and strawberry, a smattering of dried herbs, almond paste, white pepper. Medium-bodied, juicy red fruits, but good freshness and control through the palate, acidity has a bit of ‘mineral’ thing. Iron filings. It offers a lively finish of good length, that’s bright, and sweet/sappy. Delightful. Such a good drink. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Light, clear colour. Hand picked parcels of dry-grown fruit are open fermented with a small proportion of whole bunches retained; a long time on skins, but very gently treated to provide this amalgam of red berry/cherry/spice flavours floating across the palate. A made-to-measure light-bodied wine for current consumption and serving slightly chilled. JAMES HALLIDAY

We have been fans of the wines from Bernice and Julian since we tried their tempranillo grenache so many years ago and are always stoked when they come to town to say g'day. Maybe it's our turn to go visit them. They are still going strong and have been adding to their stable of stellar wines some fine additions from their home turf in the Mclaren Vale as well as some select favourite spots around the country. This is a more recent addition and an absolutely phenomenal one at that. A perfect paring of lush grenache and spicy, vibrant carignan.

  8. Domaine Gueissard Papilles Provence Rose 2021
Domaine Gueissard Papilles Provence Rose 2021

30% each Mourvédre, Grenache, Syrah and 10% Cinsault. Screwcap.
Great value for AOP Côtes de Provence given the continued upward price climb of this appellation.

A direct nose of brine and flint and grapefruit.  Drive and power upfront with orange zest and pink grapefruit flavours, though gives way to the more classic Provence experience of strawberries, cream and garrigue herbs as it washes over the palate.  A decent saline lick runs throughout; has individualism among a crowded field with enough freshness and punch to stand out.

  9. Le Roc Des Anges Segna de Cor 2021
Le Roc Des Anges Segna de Cor 2021
Segna de Cor is almost exactly Roc des Anges spelled backwards. Its 40% Grenache Noir, 30% Carignan, 30% Syrah from vines 30 to 40 years old on average and a blend of about 20 small parcels on schists. Organic, mostly destemmed and fermented with ambient yeast  in closed concrete tanks for 7 days, then pressed and racked back to tank to finish fermentation. No temperature control. No punching down or pump overs. Aged in tank for approximately 10 months. No fining, light filtration. Total sulfur at bottling 30 to 50ppm. Held for several months in bottle before release.

  10. Courbissac Les Traverses Rouge Minervois 2021
Courbissac Les Traverses Rouge Minervois 2021
Les Traverses is drawn from the estate’s younger vines. It’s a blend of roughly equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, hand-harvested from 11 parcels surrounding the cellar in the heart of Cesseras within the La Livinière Cru of the Minervois appellation. As with all Claux’s wines, the fruit is farmed biodynamically and natural whole-bunch fermentation occurs in concrete vat with minimal sulphur. The grapes are gently foot-stomped, followed by six months in concrete. Bottled at 13%, this is cracking value, as always: a supple and juicy red with spicy brambly fruit and delicious plum-skin tanginess. A wine that tells us something of what the finest Minervois wines were once known for, and a wonderful introduction to this exciting domaine.
