  1. Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2023
    Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2023
An outstanding release of this vaunted wine. It's intense, it's racy, it's complex and nuanced in its fruit, spice, mineral and subtle savoury elements, all of it woven into an extremely persistent and poised textural experience. There's stacks of flavour in all this, yet held within a tensile thrust of raciness and faint chalky pucker. And long, very long. One for the ages here. MIKE BENNIE, James Halliday

  2. Grosset Springvale Riesling 2023
    Grosset Springvale Riesling 2023
A flavoursome release of this stalwart Clare riesling; easy access in youth with a sense of high drinkability, concentration of flavour and crystalline acidity. Scents of frangipani, sweet lime, ozone and green apple with similar flavours and a fine, chalky pucker to texture. There's a general prettiness, an inviting juiciness, despite the excellent, powdery textural elements and a freshness overall. It delivers a serious expression of the variety and feels like it is in the zone in youth, yet potential for very long cellaring in the same breath. Delicious, is the byword. 3. Patrick Sullivan Chardonnay 2023
    Patrick Sullivan Chardonnay 2023
Flavour and flinty minerals rides shotgun in this delicious chardonnay. A blend of Mt Gambier and Coonawarra fruit, the master of detail and precision, Patrick Sullivan has headed further afield to SA to craft this beauty. Notes of nectarines, spice and hazelnuts lead into a fleshy and flavoursome core, framed by a minerally cage of phenolics. There's alovely earthy energy to the wine, thanks to the volcanic soils of the Limestone Coast. A kiss of French oak adds complexity and detail. There's a lot to love here, it offers exceptional value at this price point. Each sip makes you feel fancy. GABRIELLE POY

  4. Kumeu River Village Pinot Gris 2023
Kumeu River Village Pinot Gris 2023

Made by Master of Wine Michael Brajkovich from sustainably grown Pinot Gris grapes that are hand-harvested and sorted in their Kumeu Vineyards then gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermented using local wild yeast with extended maturation on the yeast lees. This is always an absolute belter of a wine and 2023 has captured warm sunny fruit with zesty freshness making it just a little bit irrestable.

Lovely peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral perfume that gives it a little honsuclkle lift. he wine is brimming with energy that helps drive the perfectly sweet fruits. Love the balance here. This absolutely hits the spot.

  5. Rieslingfreak No. 5 Clare Valley Off-Dry Riesling 2023
Rieslingfreak No. 5 Clare Valley Off-Dry Riesling 2023
A year like 2023 with an abundance of natural acidity in the grapes, makes it a perfect vintage for exquisitely balanced Off Dry Rieslings. The bouquet is richly imbued with intense tropical fruit aromas of passionfruit, pineapple and papaya, with floral top-notes of orange blossom and honeysuckle. These sweetly succulent aromas transition seamlessly onto lusciously flavoured palate, where the sweet tropical flavours are balanced by a delightful zing of sherbet-like acidity. The natural sweetness of the style adds an unctuous richness to the mid-palate, while the driving natural acidity imparts linearity and length with a crisp, clean finish.

  6. Bulman Wines Rose 2023
    Bulman Wines Rose 2023

Fresh strawberry and Bosc pear, a little musk and perfume. Fresh and lively, clean acidity, a pear skin grip, pomegranate/watermelon and peach iced tea, nice bit of chew to it, yet so finely balanced. Finish is refreshing too. Combines complexity with ease of drinking to wonderful effect. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

It’s a more mouth-filling and juicy number than last year. I love those soft, caressing, slightly phenolic aspects. Alright, and I hope this is ok, I am going to steal Gary Walsh’s comment from above, because it’s perfect for this wine “peach iced tea” is just right, it has that peach juice and tea like, faint grip. Refreshing, oozing class, brimming with lively acidity and an overall upbeat feel to it. Finishes clean and bright as it started. This is world class Rose and  I recommend it whole heartedly. ROSCOE

A blend of five vineyards, from the sub-regions of Tuerong, Main Ridge, Shoreham, Merricks and Flinders
Samphire, ripe grapefruit, apple crumble, some spice. Juicy, savoury too with an umami quality of white mushrooms and white miso, Scotch Finger biscuit, flinty with it, saline and savoury on a long lime-laced finish. Complex and individual. Such a great thing to drink. GARY WALSH

    Turkey Flat Rose 2023

James Adams is the new winemaker at Turkey Flat, this being the first vintage under his regime.

Red fruit and tangerine, a little perfume and spice – maybe a subtle sort of a curry leaf or lemongrass thing happening. Soft but with nice grip and crunch to texture, a fine chalkiness, subdued but kind of juicy red fruit with a fresh finish of good length, a dash of savoury complexity as it goes. Lovely. 9. Swinney Mourvedre Rose 2023
    Swinney Mourvedre Rose 2023
Drawn from dry-grown, bush vines on the ironstone gravel hilltop of their Powderbark vineyard.  It’s rosé that’s built from the ground up, born from the same level of viticultural detail that goes into all their wines. Seasoned with a little Grenache and Vermentino, co-fermented naturally and elevated in old oak, the result is pale and precise, textural and savoury with the inherent drinkability that lies at the heart of every great rosé.

  10. Little Reddie 'New!' Colbinabbin Nebbiolo Refosco 2023
Little Reddie 'New!' Colbinabbin Nebbiolo Refosco 2023
What does good coffee, a drought hardy fish, and Castlemaine all have in common? Little Reddie. What started as a little backyard, winemaking good times has turned in a serious (and we use that term lightly in the loosest but best possible way) wine business from all-round good guy Pat Underwood. We are always happy to see him and there is always a few good laughs with a number of staff that have worked with Pat over the years as he weaved his way through some of Melbournes best wine venues while sneaking off to Italy to do harvest in Piedmonte.

His wines are pure and expressive with minimal intervention leaning but not at the expense of making clean and giving wines. A love of Nebbiolo and Italian varietals in general has culminated in this cracking little blend. A little refosco from adds pleny of crunchy red fruit and tope-note spice to a wine that comes across light and juicy but with a serious edge the belies the effortlessness at which this slips over your tastebuds.

  11. Arfion Pinot Grigio 2023
    Arfion Pinot Grigio 2023
Originally from New Zealand, Dave Mackintosh established Arfion with his father Brian and brother Jimmy in 2011. Dave has been obsessed with making wine since '98 and likes to delve deep on a broad spectrum of styles. Sourcing grapes from highly skilled, sustainable growers from across the Yarra, they ensure site and variety are in harmony throughout the season with low impact winemaking at their heart. They do abide by one rule. All wines must deliver good times.

And yes. We know. We already included an ArFion wine on the December Value Picks but Dave-Bro is making wine that is too good to pass-up. Get em while they are hot we say.

  12. Tillie J Chardonnay 2023
    Tillie J Chardonnay 2023
In her notes to me she commented that the fruit was so good here that all she really needed to do was… ahem… um, ensure she did nothing to detract from the potential quality of the grapes…
Toight, toight like a tiger. It does a wonderful job of walking the line between invigorating and punchy. The line of acidity which blitzes through this wine currently serves to kind of implode the fruit a little, gives it a thrilling kick. There is around 20% new wood and that only serves to add a little detail and some texture. Similarly a fairly clean ferment style, accentuating the fruit and keeping things finely tuned. Soft lees and a billowing affect that helps round things out and buffer some of that youthful intensity. As good as this is now I would like to see it in three or four years and then watch where it goes from there. It’s a tough call but I think she may make better Chardonnay… both are great, but also, as Michael loves to point out, this is my style of Chard too. It is full of vim and vigour which gets me excited. Either way, both of these wines are tremendous and deserve your attention. ROSCOE

    Tillie J Pinot Noir 2023
Sappy, plucky and upbeat style with a bit more juice in the tank than last year, a wee bit more cuddly, some more cushioning. There is nice primary feel and a tart edge to the palate which lends more freshness while accentuating the sappiness. Punctuated with spice an a vein of savoury, forrest after the rain kind of thing. Long stimulating fish. Lovely wine. Needs a bit of bottle time but all the bits are in place to suggest this will demonstrate all the promise it suggests very soon. It delivers both ample pleasure and sophistication with real aplomb. Equally enjoyable to drink and ponder. ROSCOE

  14. Mutual Promise Arneis 2023
    Mutual Promise Arneis 2023
Mutual Promise are wines made by Even Milne and comes from the Latin Compr Missum or compromise. The compromise being that he doesn't farm the fruit and nor does he have full control over the creative process making the wines with friends in  their Beechworth wineries. The Mutual Promise in essence being that they trust in others to create as they would with the aim of quality at the forefront. The wines champion some of their favourite varieties sourced from the King and Alpine Valleys in Victoria's spectacular North East. Varietal and regional purity is the heart of these wines.

A summers afternoon, an Autumn evening, neither seem complete without a glass of refreshing dry white  wine and this wine is inspired by the dry whites of Northern Italy which are home to some of the all time great  refreshing dry whites. Whole bunch pressed, racked and fined to tank for cool fermentation with 50% aged in  white oak for complexity. Pear skin, lemon and almond blossom and that little green nutty thing that arneis does. A little bit slippery with green peach and some light herbal notes that expand out to more fleshy tree fruits on the finish. A pretty and convincing rendition of this Italian varietal but with a little more generosity of fruit and that's a good thing.

Wickhams Road Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023

13.2. In the last six years, they have planted 30 acres of Pinot Noir. This is the first vintage where the majority of fruit comes from Hoddles Creek.

Strawberry, red cherry, a little spice, tea leaf and mint. It’s light, all strawberry with a dusting of spice, a lick of grainy tannin, and a finish of solid length. A little green mango on the finish? Not complex, but refreshing and good to drink. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  16. Wickhams Road Yea Pinot Noir 2023
Wickhams Road Yea Pinot Noir 2023

I forget what Franco said on his little back label spiel, as I’ve given the bottle away, though it was something along the lines of ‘High acidity from this site, so no need for adds’.

It’s a bit spicy and mulchy, poached strawberry and raspberry, a little mint and floral perfume. It’s crisp, sappy, lively, a smudgy feel to tannin, slightly smoky and tobacco-laced, with a juicy finish of good length, gentle dusty tannin trailing. Nice.. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Cooler and drier than their Hoddles Creek vineyards, this Yea Valley pinot is the most reticent and fine-boned of this year's three Wickhams pinots. A light, bright red, this has scents of redcurrants, a little strawberry and blood orange. The palate is compact and very nicely balanced, with gently grippy tannins suggesting that this will need another six to 12 months to unfurl and grow into itself. A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra fruit. 100% hand-picked then chilled overnight before processing. The Pinot is either fermented as 100% whole bunches or 100% destemmed with whole berries. Cold soaked for 3 days, then allowed to warm in small open fermenters in order to kick start wild fermentation. Parcels are matured in French oak (10% new, 90% older) for eight months. Blended in October and then bottled by gravity without fining or filtration in November.

  18. Schwarz Wine Co Chenin Blanc 2023
Schwarz Wine Co Chenin Blanc 2023

Schwarz Wine Co has for some time been at the forefront of contemporary Barossa winemaking, crafting site,s and vintage transparent wines of perfume, structure, and finely etched detail. The family vineyards provide the backbone of the label, though Jason Schwarz's relationships with talented growers are paramount to an enviable cache of old-vine fruit sources. Touch the fruit lightly, don't pick too late, keep oak use in check - the house style here is pure, vibrant and we love it!

Another little ripper from Schwarz & Co. here and you know that we are a bit partial to chenin here at Prince. Green apple, quince, white tree fruits, and touch of quartzy, salty spice emanate from the glass. This is summer in a bottle with a breezy, airy disposition and wonderful fresh cut. It's all about purity of fruit which zips along a long and zesty palate, almost too easy to drink with a lovely saline line that runs through from start to finish.

    Wickhams Road Yea Chardonnay 2023
Green melon, citrus, a slight fino/brine top note, lime rind, aniseed, almond, and an almost mescal spiciness (though subtle). It's savoury but tight too, has some weight and plenty of complexity, powdery grip to texture, and a mealy and bright finish of excellent length. Such an engaging wine. So rare to get such personality, and dare I say it, charisma, at this price point. Terrific. GARY WALSH

Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Sylvaner and Riesling.

It’s painted in shades of green and yellow. Citrus, lemongrass, jasmine, Nashi pear, raw almond, parsley root, ground cucumber. Refreshing is its second name. Briny-chalky juice with a long flavour tail of yellow grapefruit, river stones and white pepper bite. Light and acidic and with an interesting sour-umami structure. I must add, SB stands tallest here. Lovely, graceful drop. KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front

  21. Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2023
    Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2023
From a section of the Tiers vineyard close planted in 2003 using the Bernard clones 76 and 95. This is same same, but different to the old vine Tiers, a little fleshier, but it’s the texture that’s the main point of difference.

White stonefruit, pear, quite spicy and slightly dusty/peppery, honey and lime. The texture is a highlight, chalky and ‘mineral’, ripe lime and honey, white peach, spicy cinnamon oak, almond meal, with plenty of citrus bite on a finish of excellent length. Marvellous wine. So emphatic in its statement of vineyard and grape variety, not least quality.  GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

To quote winemaker, Brian Croser, the ’23 Chardonnays are far from “overt.” I find that re-assuring, the vintage speaks and it’s beautifully fine with purity of fruit and acidity layered naturally, succinctly, making 1.5m poised for further ageing. Meyer lemon, lemon drop, nectarine, peach aromas with a hint of cashew – in other words an alluring introduction. Still incredibly youthful, offers a core of perfectly pitched citrus and stone fruits in balance and concentrated. Textural, too, as it comes together with nougat and roasted nuts joining fruit and gently spiced oak. Everything is in place. The only question remaining: to drink now, or not . . . 22. Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2023
    Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2023

Pear, grapefruit and lemon oil, almond meal and biscuit spices. It’s a bright and tight wine, a distinctly citrus-laced line of acidity, grapefruit, green olive and honey lemon, it’s flinty too, though has a light creamy cashew gloss to temper, and the finish is long with a zesty aftertaste. This seems like a long term wine, and while it’s kind of brittle as at now, its intensity and length mark it out as a classic Chardonnay. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

If Tiers 1.5m Chardonnay hails from the “new” block of French Bernard clones planted in 2003, fruit for this Tiers Chardonnay is off the “old” block, the original block established in 1979. A cool vintage and low yields bring good concentration, but what really characterises the wine is its open and inviting summery bounce and energy. It rocks. Orange and citrus blossom aromatics, a hint of honeysuckle join aromas of apple, citrus, grapefruit, white peach and spice. Lemony bright acidity rules the palate, enticing tastebuds and melding with lemon sorbet, zest, stone fruit and a distinctive quince tang against a nougat warm and buttery texture. Layer upon layer of concentrated flavour . . . and bounce. JENI PORT, Wine Pilot

  23. Mac Forbes Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023
Mac Forbes Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023
Destemmed and crushed before pressing, wild ferment, old barriques on fine solids with 11 months in old large and small format oak.

The nose is an exotic mix of wet stones, quince, yellow melon and grapefruit. It's accompanied by subtle crushed herbs and lees, creating a pristine aroma. The palate offers a lovely, inviting experience with expanding texture, fruit density, and a caressing line of acid. As the wine stretches across the palate, notes of melon and ripe citrus expand, while the acid threads its way to the back palate. This wine is expected to continue improving for 5-8 years. We recommend serving this wine between 12-14 degrees. MAC FORBES

  24. Luke Lambert Crudo Shiraz 2023
    Luke Lambert Crudo Shiraz 2023

This year’s Crudo Shiraz is the first release from Luke and Rosalind’s new vineyard source, the Martingale vineyard in Gruyere. Friend and owner Chris Kennedy established the vineyard in 2017 on a gentle, north-facing slope at 140 metres above sea level on the grey duplex soils of the Lower Yarra Valley. He and Luke are on the same page when it comes to farming practices, and the site is managed sustainably.

A no-frills approach in the cellar. The fruit was destemmed, and spontaneous fermentation occurred in an old 5,000-litre oak cask before being bottled without fining or filtration. The results are super impressive: it’s a high-toned, captivating, layered Shiraz, svelte and silky in weight with deep dark fruits mingled with spicy pepper notes and earthy complexity. Joyful stuff.
