  1. Benanti Etna Bianco 2021
    Benanti Etna Bianco 2021
100% Carricante grown on bush vines at 900-1000 metres above sea level. Grapes selected from vineyards located on the Eastern and Southern slopes of Mount Etna. Fermentation lasts 12 days and takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 18°C, with the aid of Benanti’s own indigenous yeast, which was selected from local vineyards through years of research and experimentation in the celllar. The wine then matures in stainless steel on the fine lees for a while and then refines in the bottle for 2-3 months.

  2. De Bortoli 'Bella Riva' Fiano 2021
De Bortoli 'Bella Riva' Fiano 2021

The Bella Riva range from De Bortoli highlights the range of classic Italian varietals from the King Valley in Victoria's high country. We talk up the De Bortoli range a lot and this latest release will show you why. Sensational value, true to form with an Aussie twist, and always on song and ready to go.

Incredibly this is almost all off a single vineyard at Moyhu and presents with a lovely citrus, green pear, and sea spray aroma. A touch of citrus pith on the palate from a light run-through barrels but only to add a little dimension of texture and weight. There is a little nutty hint all smashed up with briny, mixed citrus and green fruits. Pure and perfectly balanced.

  3. Damien Pinon Tuffo Vouvray Sec 2021
Damien Pinon Tuffo Vouvray Sec 2021

    100% Chenin Blanc

Damien Pinon is the third generation of his family to naturally farm Chenin Blanc in the chalky soils of Vernou-sur-Brenne in the appellation of Vouvray. His vines are old, creating lush, expressive white wines.

The Tuffo cuvee is intensely aromatic and loaded with flavors of quince and apple. It has a wonderful complexity to it, hitting at first with burst of fresh fruit and finishing with a vibrant minerality. This beauty is incredibly food friendly, a great compliment for everything from roasted chicken, to fish in rich sauces to grilled sausages. PWS

  4. Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021
Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021

It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. It's quite grippy too, which isn't for everyone but it works here, picking up on the wine's inherent presence. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday

This off the Macedon Edge vineyard sitting at 500 metres above sea level and is all hand-picked, foot stomped and barrel fermented in larger French oak. Pretty incredible fruit from a pretty unforgiving region.

Pip Foster has done something magic here. She has captured all the mineral charge of Macedon chardonnay in a package that is taught but with an intensity and richness of fruit that seems effortless. For someone who is pretty new to the game her first couple of release of this wine are epically good. Power, presence with beautiful definition and plenty of sass.

  5. Valentine Riesling 2021
    Valentine Riesling 2021

This comes of two vineyards - Gordon's Vineyard in Dixon's Vue and Halcyon Vineyard in Chirnside park. Handpicked and whole-bunch pressed juice then stainless steel tanks and old French oak puncheons (500Lt). Natural fermentation and matured on gross lees for nine months prior to blending.

Lovely line and lift, clean quartyz kind of minerally and fresh apple, pear, white tree fruit. Great talcy grip on the palate and punch fruit flavours all coalesce to give this a ton of energy and lift on the palate. Dom's time in the Rhingau is apparent here with lovely texture and weight to the pure and saline drive. Wonderful modern Aussie riesling here. What is not to love!?

  6. Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Blanc 2020
Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Blanc 2020

Here's a nicely composed white Burgundy from several parcels of 40 year old vines on average, with pretty meadow flower aromatics mingled with ripe citrus and white and yellow-fleshed orchard fruit. The palate is broad and ample without any heaviness and the depth of flavour and length are impressive indeed. This is a wine "toute en finesse" as they say, but also with power and palate presence. Fine wine. JOHN SZABO MS, Wine Align

A slightly riper though still agreeably fresh nose combines notes of orange peel and various white orchard fruit scents. The delicious, fleshy and round flavors are quite supple while retaining good if not truly distinguished depth and length on the clean, dry and inviting finale. This too should drink well almost immediately. BURGHOUND

  7. Zind Humbrecht Muscat Turckheim 2020
    Zind Humbrecht Muscat Turckheim 2020

Zind Humbrecht is one of the unquestioned kings of aromatic whites. His ceaseless drive to create the world's greatest examples of his varieties is nothing short of remarkable as are the resulting offerings. A devoted proponent of Biodynamics, a gifted presenter and communicator and a towering figure of modern wine, the first Frenchman to be awarded the MW (International Master of Wine) he has justifiably earned his reputation as one of the legends of modern wine.

The Tuckheim Range is the value tier and represents classic Alsatian whites from a regional blend of grapes as well as estate fruit. These vineyards are grown on the valley floor, where the glacial debris of rolled stones, granite and gneiss has settled over the aeons. Wine from these soils tends to have a lovely fruit profile underpinned with a stoney-mineral tension that screams 'drink me' and marks the wines with the typical mineral streak of Alsace.

  8. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2020
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2020

A richer style to serve with cheese or seafood
The nose is full of finesse and still is a little closed. Pinot-Gris is not an aromatic grape variety, so we find in this style of wine an aroma marked by the terroir (citrus fruits) and also the aging on total lees (grilled, toasted, fresh humus, etc.). The attack is delicate and fine. Of medium power, this wine retains its airy lightness because it has a crisp acidity, especially on the finish (it is after all a small Windsbuhl!). The balance is off-dry but the sugars are barely perceptible as the finish is straight and pure. OLIVIER HUMBRECHT MW

Caramelized-pear and very ripe melon and guava notes pour from the glass of this rich but only demi-sec Alsace pinot gris. Notes of cinnamon and allspice that you don't find in the nose. Then comes the bright, chalky acidity that beautifully balances the creaminess and spice at the long finish. Just 12.4% alcohol, yet ripe through and through. STUART PIGGOT, jamessuckling.com

  9. Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Roche Roulee 2020
Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Roche Roulee 2020

The nose displays elegant and discreet aromatics, some floral notes but mostly spicy with green pepper, thyme, nutmeg. It has a medium intensity but is quite persistent. The delicacy of the aromas is such that it isn't an overpowering big style Gewurztraminer and it will even be easier to accommodate it with food. The palate shows good intensity with a seriously dry texture. Again, the spicy character, enhanced by velvety tannins, increases the length sensation and salty mouthfeel on the finish. This wine should go well with most summer dishes, grilled fish, bbq sausages/chicken, light spicy food…. OLIVIER HUMBRECHT MW

Deep and spicy with pronounced sandalwood notes. A generous gewurz that has modest acidity, but fine tannins that balance the richness very well. Long, bone-dry finish. From over 70-year-old vines. STUART PIGGOT, jamessuckling.com

  10. A Rodda Willow Lake Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021
A Rodda Willow Lake Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021

After working with this Upper Yarra site for over a decade, Adrian Rodda has made the best rendition to date. Helped by the outstanding 2021 vintage conditions, this supreme chardonnay offers a cool fruited spectrum of white nectarine and grapefruit pith with earthy tones of white button mushrooms flecked with spicy and richer notes of crème pattisiere and freshly baked brioche. Its gliding nature gains momentum and flesh across the palate, humming with latent power and an incredible fruit intensity. Spicy undertones interplay with a lively and driving acidity, culminating in a savoury seaspray finish. Yarry Valley at its best for sure. (96) JAMES HALLIDAY CHARDONNAY CHALLENGE

Yeah, so, I am in furious agreement with the gong it got here. So was everyone else. This wine deserves it's plaudits and I assume there are many more to come.
Tension, drive, length that is genuinely pretty remarkable, super switched on winemaking and the best fruit source combined with a great vintage, you have a winning combo. Brilliant wine. Absolutely brilliant. It packs in all the class we expect from Adrian, the latent power and fruit density of Willow Lake, with it there is such wonderful texture and tactile impact, it leaves your mouth feeling almost assaulted, such is the intensity but also there is that buffering extract element that provides a bit of cushioning. This positively oozes quality and style. Brilliant. Better with some age. ROSCOE, PWS

  11. A Rodda Baxendale Vineyard Whitlands Chardonnay 2021
A Rodda Baxendale Vineyard Whitlands Chardonnay 2021

In keeping with its 600m elevation, fruit from the Baxendale vineyard always shows impressive acidity and energy. In a great vintage such as 2021, it brings a tight linear presence, balanced and beautifully integrated, providing an ideal launching pad for bright citrus, stone fruits and aromatic florals. A busy, racy youngster with a big future ahead. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

A pretty nose with a touch of reservation - wax, red apple skins, grapefruit and white florals. There's a beguiling fragility here that lures you in. The palate is tense and tight, walking an energtic line that gathers flesh and flavour with air. Its racy nature thrills, signing off with a saline edge to the acidity on the finish. It's poignant and pure, taking you on a scintillating high altitude ride - strap yourself in. GABRIELLE POY

STAFF PICKS 2022 - BRIAN BLANDIN
Immediately enticing with the nose. Hints of struck match, a flinty smokiness, coupled with a subtle touch of apple and pear skin. This follows into excellent freshness and a slightly, chalky minerality on the palate, continuing with the apple and pear flavours, all enhanced by the textural finesse, a benefit of the extended aging on lees in barrel. An absolute winner for me this year, and my stand-out favourite of the Rodda Chardonnays this vintage. Will certainly be my go to for all the festivities this season! BRIAN

  12. Ronchi di Cialla Ciallabianco 2018
    Ronchi di Cialla Ciallabianco 2018
The 2018 Cialla Bianco is smoky, wafting up with dusty chalk and musky notes of peach and pear. This gains a confectionary melon note with time in the glass. It’s texturally deep with cooling acids and mineral-tinged melon, while it soothes yet also stimulates the palate. The 2018 tapers off dry and lightly structured, yet also refreshing and long, leaving a hint of sour citrus and a lingering salty sensation. Lose this in the cellar for three to five years. The Ciallabianco is a blend of 65% Ribolla Gialla, 25% Picolit and 10% Verduzzo from 50-year-old vines. ERIC GUIDO

  14. Cep by Cep Coteaux du Layon 2021
Cep by Cep Coteaux du Layon 2021
Cropped from Philippe Germain’s estate vineyards in the heart of the Layon Valley, at Rochefort-sur-Loire. Unusually for the Loire, the clay and schist-rich soils here are cut into an amphitheatre of terraces. Compared to much of the appellation (and especially the wines of the Layon Crus of Bonnezeaux, Chaume and Quarts de Chaume) this wine showcases the more delicate, almost Germanic style of Layon.

  15. Hiedler Zobing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling 2020
Hiedler Zobing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling 2020

The 2020 Zöbing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling is clear and crystalline on the nose yet initially rather discreet in its fruit expression. Intense, ripe apricot aromas emerge form the glass after a while. Crystalline, refined and elegant on the palate this, is a powerful, tight and firmly structured Heiligenstein that is still a bit caged and needs aeration or years to open up, refine and shine. The fruit is stewed and the texture accordingly rich and fleshy, whereas the finish remains crystalline, piquant and precise. This should be another gorgeous Heiligenstein in 10 years but in the Hiedler style. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, vinous.com

  16. Hirsch Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 2019
    Hirsch Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 2019

This is the Romanee-Conti of the Kamptal, and one of the very greatest Riesling vineyards on earth - just sayin'. This fucker (and no other word will do) is blazing from whichever glass I slop it into, and without laboring the point, here we have an instance of, um, terroir making itself known.

Even from the "little" Spiegelau this wine rocks the world. Do you know the smell of really fresh ground sweet Paprika?  Inferentially, do you know the smell of Espelette pepper? It's kind of the same. But then Heiligenstein is a site beloved of associations, and you could gather a few dozen if you collated everyone's tasting notes.

There's a sense in which it isn't even "Riesling" any more. Except what else could read this terrroir so clearly?

Jancis rocks this wine. The mineral underpinning shows, and you get a hint of where the wine will go in a few years. It's wonderful to taste now but also absurd to drink now. I'm not pouring another glass for three days. To drink it now is like listening to someone reading a poem while the TV's on. Turn it off and listen, or forget it until all of you is there.

It is the classic wine that defies the craving for explicable, instant gratification. You'd need to be into wine. You'd need a decent cellar, and a modicum of patience. But I'm not sure you can fathom what waits for you on the other side… TERRY THEISE

  17. Cuatro Rayas Organic Verdejo 2021
    Cuatro Rayas Organic Verdejo 2021
Quite an intense verdejo with a flinty streak to the lemon curd, oatmeal and pomelo fruit. A hint of fennel, too. Medium-to full-bodied and flavorful with bright acidity cutting it through, followed by a twist of grapefruit-skin bitterness adding phenolic interest at the end. Vegan. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

This is a large but quality co-operative that manages to produce some incredible wines from organic grapes. This is off old-vine fruit and sees some time on lees which adds a wonderful texture and grip to the pure fruits. Cerainly on the more serious side of things here and not your average verdejo.

Domaine Alzipratu Cuvee Fiumeseccu Blanc 2021
100% Vermentino from Corsica. The grapes are grown in 2 different parcels across 3 hectares of land and the vines are aged between 8 and 12 years.
Winemaking: The grapes are pressed and settled at cold temperatures. Fermentation lasts for between 15 and 25 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged on its lees and racked twice before being bottled in the Alzipratu cellars between 5 to 8 months following the harvest.
The Fiumeseccu Blanc is pale straw in colour. The bouquet is characterised by floral notes, apple and almond. The palate is one of vibrancy and crisp acidity on a quite saline, minerally base. Totally moreish! DOMAINE ALZIPRATU

    100% Assyrtiko from Santorini.
Vinification: Typical, white wine vinification techniques, in stainless steel tanks, under controlled temperature.
Colour: Pale Yellow, with green hues.
Nose: Aromatic, with citrus fruit and minerality.
Mouth: Minerality is evident, as a result of Santorini’s unique terroir. Quite “austere” as wine, with the acidity being the back-bone of the wine, allowing it to age. Petrol notes and honey-suckle appear in aged Assyrtikos, similar to the German and Alsatian Rieslings. DOMAINE SIGALAS

  20. Koerner Pigato Vermentino 2022
    Koerner Pigato Vermentino 2022

This seems to be a bit of a chameleon of a wine, satisfying the turbo nerds of orange wine as much as the L platers, especially in further flung or dipping-toe-in-water venues looking to upsize their alt-wine offering. I get stuck into it a bit, therefore. It spent 20 days as a skin ferment/maceration.

It’s so vivid and vibrant, so thirst-quenching and delicious. Tightly wound, very minerally/briny and thirst quenching with fine, chalky texture, an inherent juiciness and good extension of mouth-watering, nashi pear, dried orange flavours. Fragrant too, but the magic happens in the palate – moreish stuff with drinkability through the roof. Such a clever and good wine. And detailed! Less orange winey this year, more salty white winey with texture, let’s say. Kudos. MIKE BENNIE, www.winefront.com

Aromas of quinine, essence of wet stone and seashore add breadth to the nose of pear, apple and anise. Once again there is fine density and intensity to the mouth coating medium weight flavors that flash outstanding length on the bracingly saline suffused finale.
