Burgundy

The soils and vineyards of Burgundy have been very well defined thanks to the studious Monks a few hundred years ago - and the swathe of others who have picked up the baton since.

The Golden Slope (Cote D'or) is divided into two; the Cote du Nuit to the north and the Cote de Beaune to the south. Pinot noir dominates the Cote du Nuit as it loves the limestone nature of the soils and Chardonnay thrives in the heavier calcareous marl soils on the Cote de Beaune.

The essence of Burgundy comes down to the place where the vines are grown. The more definitive you can be (e.g. a single vineyard like Grand Cru or Premier Cru) then the higher the price you'll pay. A village wine, which will most likely be a blend of vineyards from within the village won't be as expensive as its origins are a little broader.

To the north, Chablis is an outpost. Lying closer to Champagne than the Cote d'Or, its marine fossil laden soils (Kimmeridgian clay) make scintillating renditions of chardonnay which age beautifully.
To the south the Cote Chalonnais, Maconnais and Beaujolais make wines that are easier on the pocket. There's some great value to be had here. A few different grapes are added to the mix including Gamay and Aligoté (as well as pinot noir and chardonnay).

Red or White?
Both.

Grapes
White: Chardonnay, Aligote
Red: Pinot Noir, Gamay

Styles
The purity of chardonnay is on full display in a bottle of Chablis. Chiselled and tightly wound this is a crisp and salivating white. White Burgundy tends towards a riper heart but with spicy oak support.

Antoine Olivier Santenay Le Bievaux Blanc 2018
A great exampole of the value from Santentay - this single site Climat Has a high percentage of limestone over clay - it is energentic- vibrant and textural chardonnay, and with a nice balance of oak (25% new)  provides an little more structure to the wine than the Bourgone. ALEX WILCOX

Again, wide, fresh, clean agrumes. A little more structural more depth of flavour, faintly spiced.. gorgeously finishing. Really only at the end, end a touch of oak. Bravo. BILL NANSON Burgundy Report

  2. Roche de Bellene Bellenos Blanc 2018
Roche de Bellene Bellenos Blanc 2018

The Bellenos range sit under the newly created Coteaux Bourgignons (Hillside Burgundy) appellation. This new appellation was created in 2011 to allow producers in the region more freedom to blend wines, among varieties and throughout a larger designated area. It is designed to promote Burgundy that is of real quality but perhaps fits outside the traditional constraints of AOC regulations. It extends from Cote d’or in the north to Beaujolais in the south.

The blanc is a blend of mainly chardonnay sourced from a cluster of southern Burgundy and northern Beaujolais sites. A touch of aligoté is also blended in to provide a little extra zip and vigour to the wine. Fermentation is all done in stainless steel tank with about 8 months in larger old barrels and aging on fine lees to provide a little extra texture and weight.

A nice little hit of exotic fruits but pulled in tight to keep things fresh and while there is plenty of plushness and mid-palate richness there is a lovely savoury edge and spicey mineral note that threads it all together nicely.

  3. Antoine Olivier Santenay Le Bievaux Blanc 2019
Antoine Olivier Santenay Le Bievaux Blanc 2019
Deeper again, this time a little less width. Freshly energetic, citrus intensity, layers of flavour. So mouth-watering… always a great wine here – bravo. BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

On the nose this is quite pretty, but reserved with just a little meyer lemon, chalk dust and lemon drizzle cake type of feel. Take a sip though and it's a different story, this is bursting with energy and mouth-watering intensity. There's a spear of bristling, lemony acidity that whisks the wine across the palate at some pace, leaving behind it a lovely undercarriage of oily, mouth-coating texture which then gives way to a powdery, sparkling finish. It's screams for a plate stacked high with calamari dusted in semolina and flash fried in good olive oil. Such a charismatic wine. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

Domaine de Bellene Coteaux Bourguignons L'Eclos des Abeille Chardonnay 2020
First point to make here is that this is the freshest and most tense version of this wine to date. White flowers, slightly underripe nectarine, you know that feeling? Crunchy, tangy, leaves your mouth feeling refreshed? Second point to make is there is quite a solid little hit of extract here. I think that's what keeps this wine from being bracing, it's kind of a buffering effect. It races across the palate with intent and gets the old salivary glands working. It is so refreshing but I really wanted some oysters to have with it and we were too "busy" at the time. I think another six months in the bottle should see a little more fruit build up too. ROSCOE

  5. Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Blanc 2020
Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Blanc 2020

Here's a nicely composed white Burgundy from several parcels of 40 year old vines on average, with pretty meadow flower aromatics mingled with ripe citrus and white and yellow-fleshed orchard fruit. The palate is broad and ample without any heaviness and the depth of flavour and length are impressive indeed. This is a wine "toute en finesse" as they say, but also with power and palate presence. Fine wine. JOHN SZABO MS, Wine Align

A slightly riper though still agreeably fresh nose combines notes of orange peel and various white orchard fruit scents. The delicious, fleshy and round flavors are quite supple while retaining good if not truly distinguished depth and length on the clean, dry and inviting finale. This too should drink well almost immediately. BURGHOUND

    Francois Carillon Puligny Montrachet 2020
A mix of lieux-dits, half of which sit on the Meursault border and the other half from the Chassagne end.
Fresh and ripe aromas of smoked apple, essence of pear and hints of anise are also trimmed in admirably subtle oak. The finer if less powerful middle weight flavors also possess an attractive mid-palate texture while offering very good depth and persistence on the clean, dry and refreshing finale. This should be capable of drinking well early but also rewarding a few years of keeping. BURGHOUND

Pale primrose here, very vibrant in colour and bouquet. Complex nose with some tension, a very faint toast in a way which works, and a sense of energy to the fruit - indeed more in fruit than flowers. Swells beautifully, yet retains its characteristic restraint. Really pretty finish, a very sound bet for a village Puligny. 5 Star Wine, JASPER MORRIS MW

Francois Carillon Puligny Montrachet Champs Gains 1er 2020
From 4 parcels near Dents de Chien that measure <2 ha
Aromas of cool white orchard fruit, floral and soft spice wisps are trimmed in subtle wood. The sleek, intense and solidly voluminous flavors exude evident minerality on the equally austere and lemon-tinged finale that exhibit very fine length. Solid quality here in a package that should also reward up to a decade of keeping. Outstanding, BURGHOUND

Mid lemon yellow. This is slightly more perfumed than its neighbour on the nose, and with a striking liveliness on the palate, an excellent balance, a very light menthol here, this will be an excellent Champgains. JASPER MORRIS MW

Chapelle de Blagny Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane 2020
This is an exquisite Pinot Noir with a name very few would ever have heard of unless, of course, they put two and two together with the Meursaults, and the like, above.  This is, without doubt, the finest Blangy Rouge I have ever tasted.  This was blamed on their setting, high on the Côte and yet this should have been a plus and not a minus point for these wines. Maybe they were just left behind in favour of more famous and familiar Volnays and Pommards.  Well, this wine alone will set the record straight for this hamlet and for the future.  As the world warms up, sites like this will no doubt be highly prized, and in 2020, the vintage played into its hands.  This is one of the most expressive and downright delicious wines I have tasted in this entire campaign.  It is deeply fruited, not heavy, but intense and completely refreshing and magical on the finish.  I have awarded an extra half-point to this wine on this occasion because I want it to sit on a rare list in 2020.  Perhaps wine lovers far and wide will read about its glory and have the chance to taste just how epic Blagny can be. 19+ MATTHEW DUKES

  9. Buisson Charles Bourgogne Blanc Hautes Coutures 2020
Buisson Charles Bourgogne Blanc Hautes Coutures 2020
The domaine is 6 hectares, four of which are in Meursault and the remainder spread across communes, the most notable of which Volnay and Pommard. The domaine is run by Michael Buisson's daughter Catherine and her husband Patrick Essa (also well-known for his wine blogging) and more recently their son Louis.

The vineyards boast vine ages ranging between 40 and 100 years and while not certified organic, no herbicides or pesticides are used. The fermentation is conventional, new oak percentages vary as the vintage and cru demand and there is no battonage. Simple, simple with the aim to be at neither end of the current Meursault style wars - lean or fat. Rather, the wines hold excellent flavour presence but are railed in by good buffering acidity. 10. Gueguen Chablis 2020 375ml
    Gueguen Chablis 2020 375ml
Celine Gueguen Brocard and Frederic Gueguen are a refreshing new voice amongst the mineral soils of Chablis. Though their experience runs deep. Celine is the daughter of Jean-Marc Brocard, the respected Chablis estate where she worked with her husband Frederic for over a decade.

Winegrowing runs in Celine's blood. Plots from her great grandmother established in 1882 have been passed down the line to her. Her mother, also a wine grower instilled a strong work ethic in her daughter. To say wine ran in the family is an understatement.

That classic stoney-Chablis-esq vibe here. Why do we mentione that because a warming climates and changing syle doesn't always present but here it does. Nice balance with the fresh white tree fruits cut by a saline line of acicidity and sprinkled with a little white pepper, quartzy thing going on. Nice little push of fruit out the back with loveley virbancy and purity offset with a little leesy funk.

  12. Buisson Battault Bourgogne Blanc 2020
    Buisson Battault Bourgogne Blanc 2020

From two small lieu-dits (Les Clous Perrons and les Magnys) with vines dating back to 1951.
This is a baby Meursault on the nose. All the fruit comes from Meursault with some lovely old vines adding intensity and complexity. A delicious overachiever, this offers flavours of white nectarines, honey and wet stones. Its tension, flavour depth and presence are impressive in 2020. Nervy acidity brings harmony to the finish. GABRIELLE POY

…Incisive, then just a little cushion, growing broader, properly mouth-watering. Lovely acidity, a faint caramel but there's no new oak in this cuvée, surprisingly long after the last wines too. Clearly excellent wine! BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

  13. Buisson Battault Meursault Vieilles Vignes 2020
Buisson Battault Meursault Vieilles Vignes 2020
This Vieilles Vignes cuvee is sourced from two fantastic Village lieu-dits in Meursault (Les Malpoiriers & Les Pellans) with vines planted in 1935 and 1930 respectively.
Opulent spices mix with golden delicious apples and fresh fennel on the nose. With air, the fruit fragance gives way to minerally accents. Like the 2019, there's an intriguing interplay between density and lightness, its palpable intensity glides across the palate with a fine talcy texture. On the finish a lingering line of acidity offers a burst of freshness and salinity to temper the underlying tow of power and drive coming from the superb 90+-year-old vines. GABRIELLE POY

Ooh, directly this is clearly a proper Meursault nose - super. Open concentrated but still alive. Vibrant despite the finishing concentration. Clearly excellent wine. BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

  14. Chateau de Beauregard Pouilly Fuisse Vers Cras 2018
Chateau de Beauregard Pouilly Fuisse Vers Cras 2018

Comes from two hectares of well ventilated 50 year old vines from both the Fuisse side and Pouilly vineyards A ripe and nicely perfumed nose features notes of citrus blossom, acacia, pear compote and a whiff of spice. The precise and mineral-driven flavors don't possess the same mid-palate density as the 2019 version though they do still possess an attractive texture as well as good persistence on the youthfully austere and chiseled finish. Outstanding, BURGHOUND

  16. Jean-Louis Chavy Bourgogne Blanc 2021
    Jean-Louis Chavy Bourgogne Blanc 2021
From ten small parcels of 20-60 year old vines. Les Tremblot, ("more Puligny in character, as the soil is argileous," says Jean-Louis); Les Meix, Les Levrons (more rounded wine for there are more stones and gravel here and it is not so heavy), Corvée des Vignes and Les Reuchaux. These small vineyard holdings are all just below the premier cru’s close to the village and cover the diversity of Puligny from north to south. Just 20% new oak for this wine which always shows excellent balance and drinking pleasure from an early age.
