Sicily

A mere generation ago, there mightn't have been much to say here about Sicilian wine.  Apart from Marsala, the reds were mostly sold in bulk to fatten up pale wines from cooler European vintages, or lost in the production of vermouth somewhere.

But with it's special place at the confluence of Mediterranean and North African cultures, there's been a modern day renaissance in wine and food here that is nothing short of a remarkable.  Australians have an affinity for this blend of warm Mediterranean climate, migrant culture and vibrant food.  Sicily just makes sense.

Red or white?
Red production is dominated by Nero d'Avola, grown in most regions across the island. Ranging  from juicy medium bodied cherry fruited styles blended with the lighter Frappato, to sturdy dark, structured and plummy numbers that will appeal to Shiraz lovers.

Nerello Mascalese is exciting for its structured, fragrant and tannic wines, coming on high from the steep volcanic slopes of the still very active Mount Etna.

Surprisingly, there's also plenty of white planted here, chief among them Carricante. Distinctively refreshing with notes of smoke, cut herbs and lemon tonic.

  1. Benanti Etna Bianco 2021
    Benanti Etna Bianco 2021
100% Carricante grown on bush vines at 900-1000 metres above sea level. Grapes selected from vineyards located on the Eastern and Southern slopes of Mount Etna. Fermentation lasts 12 days and takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 18°C, with the aid of Benanti’s own indigenous yeast, which was selected from local vineyards through years of research and experimentation in the celllar. The wine then matures in stainless steel on the fine lees for a while and then refines in the bottle for 2-3 months.

    Tornatore Etna Bianco DOC 2021

A perfumed white, with white blossoms and ripe fruit on the nose, this is saline and mouth-watering on the palate. Offers a touch of lemon zest enlivening flavors of Asian pear, blanched almond and chamomile. WINE SPECTATOR

Aromas of white peach, orange peel and crushed thyme. Medium-bodied. Steady and bright on the palate. Subtle, smoky flavor mixes well with fresh and dried-herb notes. JAMES SUCKLING

  3. Feudo Montoni Grillo Timpa 2021
    Feudo Montoni Grillo Timpa 2021
The most succulent ripe peach aromas complemented by hints of tangerine and fresh mint waft up from the 2021 Grillo Timpa. It is round and fleshy in feel, with sweet inner florals up front that give way to tropical melon and exotic spice. While a bit extroverted in character, there's plenty of stimulating acidity and sour citrus tones within to maintain fabulous balance. The 2021 leaves the palate completely refreshed with hints of kiwi and lime zest that linger. This really packs a punch, yet it never gets cloying or tiring. ERIC GUIDO, vinous.com

  4. Tenuta Aglaea 'Lucifer' Bianco Sicilia IGT 2020
Tenuta Aglaea 'Lucifer' Bianco Sicilia IGT 2020
A field blend of originally planted varieties of grecanico, cataratto, minella and carricante are harvested manually from old vines, some that are up to almost 100 years old. They sit in her prized Santa Spirito vineyard but due to the infamous Italian bureaucracy, the site is only designated for DOCG for red wines, so despite the age and quality of these incredible old bush vines she is only able to label the wine as an IGT. All steel tank ferment with some cold soaking to draw out texture and weight.

Fresh, mineral and saline and in a juicy style that opens with green apple nuances, bright stone fruits, light tropical notes and a hint of pineapple, and citrus pith. It's textural, fleshy, and tight. Salty and minerally, white pepper notes emboss the bright fruit profile. Delicate but at once vibrant and punchy. What a summer treat!

    Cantina Marilina Cue Moscato 2021
Angelo Paternò worked for 25 years as the winemaker and technical director for the Sicilian wineries Cantine Settesoli and then Duca di Salaparuta before buying 60 hectares (148 acres) on a hill formerly known as Poggio dei Fossi in the southeastern Sicilian province of Siracusa. He has since handed over the reigns to his daughters, Marilina and Federica who work organically with minimal intervention and no additives.

The 'Cue' is 100% Moscato all harvested by hand spending a long maceration with 5 months in concrete tank.

  6. Alta Mora Etna Bianco 2021
    Alta Mora Etna Bianco 2021
The 2021 Etna Bianco is fresh and nicely balanced with white peach and grapefruit that are contrasted against crushed mineral and volcanic ash. This crisp white wine proves highly drinkable and enjoyable thanks to that almost salty back end that would pair with fried shrimp or Thai spring rolls. It ages on the fine lees for six month. Fruit is sourced from across three contrade: Arrigo (in Linguaglossa), Verzella and Pietramarina. MONICA LARNER, www.robertparker.com

The 2021 Etna Bianco opens with a whiff of crushed stones and raw almonds, giving way to crushed green apples. It soothes with its round, enveloping textures. Zesty acidity and salty mineral tones add a reverberation of tension. It leaves a subtle tart tinge of sour melon while finishing pleasantly fresh and saline. ANTONIO GALLONI

  7. Pietradolce Etna Bianco 2022
    Pietradolce Etna Bianco 2022

The 2022 Etna Bianco is delicate and floral with a nuanced blend of nectarine and wet stones. It’s soft and enveloping with a pretty inner sweetness up front and zesty acidity that enlivens its core of citrus-tinged apples. This finishes long, staining, yet still fresh, with sour lime and savory spice notes. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com
