Veneto

Veneto

Up northeast, Veneto's a province that has it all.  From mountains to fertile plains and a lagoon on the Adriatic seaside.
Holidaymakers will know it for romantic spots like Verona and the faded majesty of Venice's canals and treasures like the Rialto, the Guggenheim and the Aperol Spritz.

Red or white?
Equally adept with white as with red, but in Veneto, finding quality is key.  There's the handsomely named smoky, crisp dry whites of Soave and the more familiar Pinot Grigio.  The best both come from hillier vineyards.

Reds from Valpolicella range from juicy, medium bodied reds to richer full bodied, powerful dried grape styles of Amarone and its little cousin Ripasso.

Prosecco is the fun time fizz for when friends pop in, with its peach, green apple and pastry notes.  But again, head for the hills where the quality producers farm their vineyards. The best examples come from the Conegliano zone, specifically the Cartizze hill.  The simpler wines are best put to use when aperitivo hour strikes, in either a Bellini or a Spritz.

Garganega (in Soave), Pinot Grigio

  1. Suavia Soave Le Rive 2019
    Suavia Soave Le Rive 2019
There is real flesh on these bones. Honestly, for a wine with this kind of punchy fruit and weight it's remarkably light on it's feet. It bursts on to the palate with an array of orchard fruits that hold a faint waft of the exotic. So long and juicy feeling as it fills the mouth that it's positively ebullient. The extra weight and dimension, as well as that lick of something you may find in a fresh fruit market in Thailand, comes from the slight drying process, but that also leaves you with more acidity, the combination is just so good. This is gorgeous. Fleshy, beautifully fruited, very long and so fresh. It will age a decade or more if you want to put it away, I would think you should leave it for a few years at least. ROSCOE

  2. Pieropan C5 Calvarino
    Pieropan C5 Calvarino
A new wine from Pieropan, this blend of five vintages – 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 – celebrates the five years it took to build the estate's new winery. Aged on the lees in cement... It's bursting with ash, stone, melon, peach, papaya and pineapple aromas. Intense and chiselled, there’s a prominent mineral character here, joined by juicy exotic fruits and aromatic floral notes. A big wash of fresh, saline acidity runs through the core, taking it to a very long, elegant, lifted conclusion. JAMES BUTTON, Decanter

  3. Monte Ronca Colle Marianna Soave 2021
Monte Ronca Colle Marianna Soave 2021
Made from 100% Garganega planted in the basalt vineyards of Monte Calvarino. The fruit was picked at the end of September, crushed and fermented in 85% stainless steel and 15% large-format casks. At 450 metres, Garganega can only just reach ripeness, so this is where a small amount of appassimento fruit works well (around 10%) to add flavour and texture while holding its cooler structure. The wine is charmingly floral on the nose, with notes of peach and green almond. On the palate, the wine is textural and juicy with citrus, stone fruit, minerals and a touch of spice.

  4. Pieropan Soave Classico 2022
    Pieropan Soave Classico 2022
The 2022 Soave Classico is a total pleasure on the nose. Sweet smoke and mint nuances complement tropical green melon notes. This soothes with its soft textures while stimulating the senses with a zesty mix of brisk acidity and candied citrus. It tapers off crisp and clean with an inner floral resonance as lemon oil traces slowly fade. I would drink this any night of the week. What a treat. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

  5. Pieropan Calvarino 2021
    Pieropan Calvarino 2021

There’s something especially spicy and enticing about the 2021 Soave Classico Calvarino. White smoke and honeyed floral aromas give way to ground ginger and crushed green apples. It’s deeply textural, nearly oily, and young peach nuances swirl throughout. Residual acids keep you returning to the glass as zesty yellow citrus offsets liquid stone through the youthfully tense finale. This is an absolutely stunning performance for Calvarino, and as primary as it is today, I can’t help but pour another glass. The 2021 was matured entirely in glass-lined cement tanks for one year. The 2021 Calvarino is a powerful terroir representation. (94) ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

  6. Pieropan Soave Classico La Rocca 2021
Pieropan Soave Classico La Rocca 2021
The 2021 Soave Classico La Rocca seduces, flaunting its rich bouquet of confectionary spice and sweet oak before coming further into focus with baked apple and chamomile notes. This is elegance personified, opulent at first and then decidedly savory and precise, with crisp orchard fruits flowing across a saline-tinged, acidic core. The 2021 finishes with dramatic length, staining the palate in youthful concentration as zesty citrus combines with dried apricot and peach. This is an especially decedent vintage for La Rocca, yet the balance is something to behold. It was refined for one year in a mix of 2000- and 500-liter Slavonian oak barrels. ANTONIO GALLONI

  7. Monte Tondo Mito Soave 2022
    Monte Tondo Mito Soave 2022

Gino Magnabosco and his daughter, Marta, are knocking out some amazing wine out of Soave. The fruit is sourced from their estate grown vineyards throughout the best areas of the region including Monte tenda, Monte foscarino and the name-sake - Monte tondo

Packed full of citrus fruits, floral notes with nashi pear and green apple. The warmth of 2018 gives this a nice little flesh in the mid-palate that leads to a long and satisfying finish. Nice balance between the plump fruit and zippy acidity. This really over-delivers

  8. Suavia Soave Classico 2022
    Suavia Soave Classico 2022

White pears, crushed rocks and zesty citrus aromas leap from the glass. A cushioned core of tangy lemons and spiced stonefruits gives way to a wash of minerals and a tingly spine of acidity. Chiselled phenolics on the finish support a tangy core, flecked with minerality and subtle earthy spices. A delicious crisp and vibrant Soave. GABRIELLE POY

Stone fruits and white pepper-laced acidity. Lovely depth. Mid-weighted, highly versatile and saline across a long, succulent finish. Screw cap punctuates the precision. Drink now. NED GOODWIN MW

  9. Suavia Soave Monte Carbonare 2021
    Suavia Soave Monte Carbonare 2021
    ***Tre Bicchieri Winner***
Red volcanic ferrous soils with ample black basalt strewn amidst. Suits the later ripening Garganega, while screw cap promotes the freshness sought at this address. 6 ha. 60-70 year vines on a cooler site, rising to the creme of top quality sites as the climate warms. A richer wine than the younger Classico, but without the same sassy vitality. While the Classico is an unbeatable everyday wine, this is a complex wine demanding food and a little more contemplation. Mirabelle, apricot pith, a whiff of dried mango and plenty of smoky, pungent mineral grip, with dutiful freshness towing tenacious length. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. NED GOODWIN MW

Elegant and characterful Soave Classico, hailing from the prized Monte Carbonare 'cru', known for its distinct basalt soils. And this wine has a volcanic soul, with smoky nuances to the filigree lemon, apple and almond flavours. There's a pleasant width to the mid-palate. DECANTER

  10. Suavia Soave Massifitti 2020
    Suavia Soave Massifitti 2020
100% Trebbiano di Soave, an historical grape brought back to life by Suavia. Ian D'agata reports in his Native Wine Grapes of Italy tome that this is in fact Verdicchio - which many hold to be Italy's greatest white. Notes of wet stones, acacia and stonefruits are supported by smoky undertones. The palate washes through, effortless almost in its delivery. Honeyed tones are starting to appear adding texture and flavour. A waterfall of acidity gushes through on the finish, leaving a cleansing tail in its wake. A subtle beauty indeed, interwoven with detail. GABRIELLE POY

  12. Balestri Valda 'Sengialta' Soave Classico DOC 2020
Balestri Valda 'Sengialta' Soave Classico DOC 2020
Sengialta cru. Dark brown volcanic soils with basaltic rocks. Named after sengia, a hard, unbreakable calcareous rock
Spicy and floral, the 2020 Soave Classico Sengialta opens in the glass with an inviting blend of crushed apples, crystalized ginger and sweet smoke. This is silky and round, nearly opulent in feel, with a core of saline minerals and brisk acids to balance. A salty flourish punctuates the finish, along with hints of lime, creating a savory yet still remarkably fresh impression. Outstanding purity and poise mixed with ripe fruit make the Sengialta a pleasure to taste. ERIC GUIDO

  13. Balestri Valda 'Libertate' Trebbiano di Soave 2020
Balestri Valda 'Libertate' Trebbiano di Soave 2020
Beeswax, pear pulp, yellow florals set off a sense of richness, abundance and the fecundity of Spring. The palate follows suit hitting initially with a ripe orchard fruit bowl creating texture and richness before the limestone cinches the corset and draw the wine back to the centre. This sense of restraint V abundance is further accentuated by a lovely almond clip on the back end. I can see this with anything from soft cheese to scampi. Gorgeous wine. MICHAEL MCNAMARA
