This has a wicked reductive edge now, so either don't touch this for a long time, or let it open up in the glass (or, yes, decanter!). When it does finally give way, soak up the amazing, stoney nuances, freshly squeezed Japanese plums and Korean pears. From a south facing vineyard site near the Rhine river at 100 to 120 m altitude. The soils are mainly loess and loam with some gravel and a little bit of quarzite in the subsoil.

This is the lowest lying GG, leading with a composed nose of stonefruits spiked with ginger and earthy tones. With a few swirls it ramps up in intensity, vanilla and peach flavours emerge alongside delicate herbal delights. There's a lovely play between exuberance and subtlety, it's a delightful tease. A long and linear drive on the palate gains power and traction pulling in more flavours along the way. Fine chewy phenolics add dimension to the finish. This has a long life ahead. From 'the heart' of the Hallgarten 1er Lage 'Hendelberg' this "tour de force" is proudly dressed with a gold cap (goldkapsell) denoting it is deemed to be great by the winemaker.

There’s a bit of mountain stream in the fragrance of the Scharzhofberger Kabinett, but the primary aromas come from local orchards and citrus-fruit groves. Don’t expect an exuberance of sweet temptation on the palate, as zest and spice play at least as significant a role as residual sugar. But what makes the Scharzhofberger so unique is not the fruit, but the zest and spice it is delivered with. The 2020 Zöbing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling is clear and crystalline on the nose yet initially rather discreet in its fruit expression. Intense, ripe apricot aromas emerge form the glass after a while. Crystalline, refined and elegant on the palate this, is a powerful, tight and firmly structured Heiligenstein that is still a bit caged and needs aeration or years to open up, refine and shine. The fruit is stewed and the texture accordingly rich and fleshy, whereas the finish remains crystalline, piquant and precise. This should be another gorgeous Heiligenstein in 10 years but in the Hiedler style. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, vinous.com

STAFF PICKS 2022 - ROSCOE HALLIGAN-ROSE


What a wine. It was a bit of an all-out brawl this year to see who would take out the big gong. I nabbed a couple of contenders on a recent weekend to examine them properly in the right kind of environment, under a tree in my yard with some mates and some nibbles. At the end There Can Be Only One and that had to be the Freddy Emile 2016. It's like they bottled The Quickening.
The power here is genuinely staggering. It's so compact and tense that it isn't entirely comfortable to taste at this early stage. Even with a few years under the belt it is almost completely primary with little or no indication of age showing amongst that youthfully imploded and inwardly focused fruit. Scintillating stuff. It practically hums with pent up potential. The length is unreal and it stains the palate with wildly mineral fruit. The palate is hugely impactful and it hits like a sock stuffed with pool balls being swung around. It is  a genuine WOW wine but it comes with a caveat, do not drink them too early. There is so much here just waiting to unveil itself. This is probably the best young version of this storied wine I have ever drunk. ROSCOE


Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine's mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it's more like 55/45). The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. So vibrant for it’s age, this has great concentration of candied-lime and grapefruit-zest character. Terrific structure and energy on the driving palate, but all of this is wrapped in rich citrus fruit to create stunningly complete harmony. Very long and compact finish that suggests this has at least a further decade of aging potential. JAMES SUCKLING

Pale colour. Classic developed lime, toasty aromas and flavours with hints of oilskin and sage. The palate is superbly balanced and in clockwork condition with attractive fruit complexity, underlying minerally notes, fine lacy textures, very good mid-palate viscosity and fine linear fresh acidity. A touch al-dente at the finish. A beautiful example of Eden Valley Riesling showing the fidelity of vineyard site and masterful winemaking. ANDREW CAILLARD

The 2020 Riesling Alte Reben Mosel (White Capsule) offers a pure and crystalline slate bouquet with ripe and well-concentrated Riesling fruit. Lush and ripe on the palate, this is a very elegant, fresh and tensioned Riesling with intensely aromatic and sustainable fruit and mineral and tannic grip. The 2021 Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese is clear, precise and fresh on the tropical nose that reveals a stony/flinty spiciness intermingled with fine and candied ripe grapefruit aromas. Lush, refined and savory on the palate, this is a delicate but dense and finely concentrated, stimulatingly crispy Spätlese with a crystalline/saline finish. 7.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. The 2021 Rothenberg Riesling Auslese is based on pink- and violet-colored overripe but healthy grapes. The nose is brilliantly clear and spicy, with fine raisin aromas intertwined with candied grapefruit and fully ripe mirabelles. Round, lush and intense on the palate, this is a very refined and concentrated, saline and savory Auslese with delicate bitters on the well-structured finish that is a gorgeous reflection of the Rothenberg terroir. Our first batch that explores a longer elevage of two years. The first in ceramic eggs which we feel bring an elevated minerality during fermentation and maturation. Then the wine is stirred up and racked to a seasoned 2000l foudre. Here the wine evolves slowly as the lees settle out and protect the wine. BRYAN MARTIN

Amalaya, 'a hope for a miracle' is a nod to local farmers who made offerings hoping for an abundant, high quality harvest each year. The mix of torrontes and riesling has an intense musky scent under a mix of lemons and flowers. A strong stony mineral thread cuts through the grapefruit and sweet lime finish. A unique and fun wine to play with around food. The Amalaya blanco blend is made with organic grapes grown around 1675 metres. ANTHONY GISMONDI

The 2021 Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine is from 60-70-year old vines on the midslope of the Schlossberg Grand Cru. This took a whole year to ferment and stopped at around 5g/L of residual sweetness. It's richer than usual for the domaine, but with the acidity of 2021, this actually sits well. The most subtle hint of orange blossom is all the nose wants to reveal. More temperature reveals an overtone of pineapple juice. A tiny flicker of smoky reduction appears, too. The palate is bold, clean-cut, serene and scented. This is the crystalline nature of granite making itself known. The pithy texture makes the mouth water even more. The aroma and the texture of freshly zested Amalfi lemon are on the long finish. This has body but no fat - a gorgeous synthesis of freshness and citrus, long and elegant. Real drive and much energy. (Bone-dry) 96/100 ANNE KREDIEHL Vinous

The nose is wonderfully flinty with promising reduction. The palate is dry, rather serene and round. Subtle flavors of sun-ripened Mirabelle skin appear on the mid-palate, then tapers to a long, taut lemon finish. The bone-dry lemon zestiness has a long echo. (Bone-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous

Vivacious and uber refreshing, this positively hums with a primal energy and delivers it all with an emphatic snap of rocky mineral tension that clings to the medium bodied, pithy, zesty fruit that struts across your mouth like it has somewhere important to be. I love its vim and vigour, at no point is your palate not fully engaged and enlivened. It carries all this character with seeming ease as it slowly unwinds at the back.
The next day there was a distinct florality and a potent lemon oil note that really got me excited. Also the more textural, phenolic, extract components were a little more positively influential. This speaks volumes for the wines ability to age and evolve gracefully in the bottle, but it's a thrill to drink now. Gorgeous. ROSCOE

A lacy layer of floral honey lies over the very ripe white fruit aromas of this very elegant Auslese. In spite of the impressive concentration and succulence, this riesling Auslese is still really fine, even filigree. What a great vibrancy this also has at the dense finish! Enormous aging potential. The 2021 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Auslese is precise, fresh and flinty on the nose yet pretty sweet on the palate. This is an elegant and refined, dense and saline, seriously grippy and stimulating Auslese with enormous aging potential. The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous Kabinett that has to be aged for 10-15 years. Sourced from 80-year-old vines on pure gray slate. Bottled with a spectacular total acidity of 12 grams per liter, but you don't feel the grams of acidity; and believe me, it's serious but balanced by extract and almost 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. The 2021 Riesling Aus den Lagen is based on de-classified grand and premier cru barrels of the domaine. Very pure, fresh and stony but, most of all, reductive on the clear and serious nose, this is a medium-bodied, elegant, refined and persistently salty Riesling with a fine phenolic structure and elegant acidity STEPHAN REINHARDT

Jinkies! This is a different beast. They have replaced the estate with this, which is essentially a "Village" or maybe a "Premier Cru" from them. All classified sites now. I was really looking forward to sitting down and actually having a good look at this new wine from one of my fave Rizza producers. It did not disappoint. It carries all that rocky, pithy, just underripe stone fruit characters I love from the estate. The core is a little more lively than usual, they are always energetic and usually spine tingling in their attack, this is a bit more approachable and piquant. Long, and as is the case with so many of these 21s, the finish is all mineral and saline, so much so it pushes the fruit to the side. A final lick of not insubstantial extract really kicks the finish in to overdrive. Excellent. ROSCOE

The 2021 Richter Estate Riesling (or Riesling Feinherb in some markets) offers a clear and aromatic bouquet of ripe and savory Riesling fruit intertwined with coolish flinty notes. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a savory and salty, very charming and mouth-filling Riesling with stimulating grip and the concentration of partly very old vines cultivated in the cooler side valleys that give more acidity than the vineyards in the main Mosel Valley. This is a convincing, textured and very quaffable Riesling with a stimulating saline finish. 10.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Following their father's death in 2020, twin sisters Camille and Audrey are forging ahead as the 10th generation to run this gorgeous family farm near Narbonne in the Languedoc. As an enologist Camille has overseen a significant jump in quality by introducing modern winemaking techniques after working vintages abroad. They are investing in revitalising the old cellar and focused on biodiversity and achieving close to organic farming practices. Her wine style is sparkly, clean and honest, delivering impeccable quality across the range.
 
A delicate, fresh and mineral wine from twin sisters Camille and Audrey, Rivage Blanc is racy and driven by Sauvignon Blanc, in a restrained European style. Floral citrus mingles with grapefruit juice and a very fine cut of refreshing acidity, a great example of Camille's clever, frank wine making style.

Most likely one of the oldest wineries in the world, Staffelter Hof dates far back to AD 862, when King Lothar II great-grandson of Carl the Great donated the winery to the monastery of Stavelot (hence the name “Staffelter”). A mineral and mouth-watering white wine, with pear and pineapple aromas, made from the grape variety Riesling.

Dry and intently steely, this is a svelte, medium-bodied Riesling studded with piercing lime and lemon flavors. Despite a ripe, ample vintage, it’s a thrilling, racy white that finishes with a delightfully salty tang of chalk and slate.92 pt – Wine Enthusiast

The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Klamm Kabinett is on volcanic soils of porphyry. This is a vineyard that used to belong to an extended family. It was repurchased and is now vinified as a single site. The nose is of serene citrus. The palate is rich like lemon oil, concentrated, flowing and mouth-watering. Lemon fills the mouth, serene, yet with an inherent playfulness. All the fruit plays first fiddle for now, but the stone underneath just waits its turn. The 2022 is glorious, balanced and bright. ANNE KREBIEHL MW, vinous.com

More svelte and juicy - and appealingly playful - than the Leistenberg this vintage, with a relaxed and balanced sweetness. Refreshing acidity and beautiful stony spice on the lingering, dry finish. The slip of sweetness, the burst of fruit, the citrussy cut of the finish. This is both impressive and delicious, though you get the feeling that it would be a searing number if a little residual sugar had been put to good/positive effect. It tastes mainly of lime, apple juice and apple core and while it explodes upfront it really kicks with acid-driven flavour through the finish.
