Campania

Campania

There's plenty to take in round here, from the winding roads of the Amalfi coast, to the glamour of Capri and a day trip to explore remnants of the ancient civilisation at Pompeii.  And whilst the Romans might think they've got pizza bragging rights, the province of Campania is home to mighty Naples.  World famous for San Marzano tomatoes and also the epicentre of silky buffalo mozzarella, there really is no competition.  The secret to the sauce? The sunny Mediterranean climate and the special volcanic soils of Vesuvius.

Red or white?
Local grape varieties of both colours are believed to have evolved from ancient Greek origins, so they know how to thrive in the heat of the Med.  For inky wild reds with structure, tannin and depth there's Aglianico (al-ee-yah-niko).  Whites are dominated by textural, nutty and fleshy Fiano from the little town of Avellino.

Aglianico is known as the Nebbiolo of the south, for its capacity to keep acid and tannin in these warmer parts.  The best come from Taurasi and full bodied, savoury wines capable of ageing and evolving with some years in bottle.  The most successful white is Fiano.  Its honeyed florals and waxy style make it a great friend of the aforementioned buffalo mozzarella, as well as firm fish and salads.   Special mention too to Greco, for its crisp whites with green apple, flint and citrus notes.

  1. Petilia Fiano d'Avellino 2019
    Petilia Fiano d'Avellino 2019

Siblings Roberto and Teresa Bruno property is 20 hectares of vineyards planted to a range of classic regional varietals. The vineyards sit at elevations of 400 - 650 meters and are scattered amongst the towns of Arpaise, Lapio, Candida, Chianche and Altavilla Irpinia. Roberto has been the driving force behind the estate and has been in charge of the winemaking since its inception.

These are wonderfully classic expressions of the region that embrace a modern approach to winemaking which at its heart respects the long traditions and history of Campania.

A touch of spicyness over a tropical citrushit complemented by sweet florals. Apple and tree fruit in a silky and lush frame gives way to some peach and minerals salt, quartzy thing going on. Love the sweet fruit and salty tang this comes at you with and some nice zip of crisp acidity keeps it fresh and vibrant.

  2. Petilia APE Fiano d'Avellino 2016
    Petilia APE Fiano d'Avellino 2016
Ape means "bee" in Italian and maybe it is the power of suggestion, but I taste a lot of honey on the bouquet here. The 2016 Fiano di Avellino Ape opens to a deep, off-gold color and the semblance of thick concentration. The wine delivers ample beeswax and honey that gives the bouquet a rather heavy and rich personality. Indeed, that concentration is almost too much in my opinion. Thick aromas of dried apricot and peach are followed by exotic spice and even a touch of cinnamon. MONICA LARNER

This comes from Chianche in Montefalcione. Destemmed and fermented on the skins at a very low temperature with 6 months on fine lees. It offers a myriad of sensations with hints of white flowers, pear, the unmistakable touch of toasted hazelnut. There is some nice phenolic grip on the palate from the time on skins and the rich fruit is kept in check finishing on a racy note.

The high altitude vineyards this grows on lend a gentle floral lift, lemon blossom and lime leaf to the easy going and salt flecked nose. A touch of first season nectarine, a little citrus blend, some stoney minerality that splices the palate together nicely and fresh snap with some pithy phenolics that make it a perfect food wine. Not too heavy, not too light.

  4. Quintodecimo Via Del Campo Falanghina 2022
Quintodecimo Via Del Campo Falanghina 2022
Green melon, candied lime, freshly sliced Granny Smith apple and crushed rocks form a captivating bouquet as the 2022 Falanghina Via del Campo comes to life in the glass. This is soft and supple, quite textural, with a mineral tinge up front further enhanced by brisk acidity as tart orchard fruits and citrus tones keep the tension high. The 2022 finishes crisply refreshing yet remarkably long with a cheek-puckering sour melon concentration. The potential here is very high. The Via del Campo displays this ripe vintage's best attributes and a minerality that perfectly balances the expression. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

  5. Petilia Greco di Tufo 2022
    Petilia Greco di Tufo 2022
Petilia's story is woven into the very fabric of Greco di Tufo and this wine encapsulate brilliantly what these wines can be when this variety and place come together under the watchful eye of a producer of this calibre. Drink this with abandon, enjoy it with a wide range of fare, it's freshness and structure give it a wide zone to play in.

Very cool wine. Almond oil and citrus pith on the nose slowly open to reveal orange blossom, green mandarin and saline notes. Some lovely phenolic grip add texture webbing the pristine fruits on the palate together nicely. It starts tangy and fresh with an array of citrus interspersed with rocky notes and green apple fruit. Super refreshing with a long palate that sizzles along to a long supple close.

  6. Petilia Quattro Venti Greco di Tufo Riserva 2020
Petilia Quattro Venti Greco di Tufo Riserva 2020
Quite a different beast to the 'entry' Greco offering. There's a palpable intensity, structure and savouriness to the wine. Peach, lemon curd and a refreshing saline grapefruit acidity all in the mix along with a little nutty nuance. The texture starts of creamy and round but is quickly usurped by a wall of drying, pithy tannin which draws everything in at the back leaving dry and lightly bitter, pleasing finish. This is a distinctive wine built to be consumed with food to see it at its best. Idiosyncratic and intriguing in the best way. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

Showing Greco di Tufo’s serious, sophisticated side, this has discreet aromas suggesting stone fruit, lychee and Spanish broom. Linear and polished, the elegant palate offers white peach, pear and Myer lemon before finishing on hints of white almond and acacia honey. It’s bright, with fresh acidity while a saline finish keeps it savory. KERIN O'KEEFE
