  1. Koerner Pigato Vermentino 2022
    Koerner Pigato Vermentino 2022

This seems to be a bit of a chameleon of a wine, satisfying the turbo nerds of orange wine as much as the L platers, especially in further flung or dipping-toe-in-water venues looking to upsize their alt-wine offering. I get stuck into it a bit, therefore. It spent 20 days as a skin ferment/maceration.

It’s so vivid and vibrant, so thirst-quenching and delicious. Tightly wound, very minerally/briny and thirst quenching with fine, chalky texture, an inherent juiciness and good extension of mouth-watering, nashi pear, dried orange flavours. Fragrant too, but the magic happens in the palate – moreish stuff with drinkability through the roof. Such a clever and good wine. And detailed! Less orange winey this year, more salty white winey with texture, let’s say. Kudos. MIKE BENNIE, www.winefront.com

  2. Schmolzer & Brown Pret A Blanc 2022
    Schmolzer & Brown Pret A Blanc 2022

And the kitchen sink… pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, riesling and sylvaner from King Valley all blended up nice ‘n’ pretty. Judiciously, I bet too.

Texture and freshness, summery feel and high drinkability. Kicking goals. It’s in that vein of pleasing, Schweppers Bitter Lemon soft drink territory, a gently fruitiness, sweetness, dryness, bitterness, all just so and very vibrant and refreshing. A bit of alpine herbiness in the mix too. Squeaky textured and mouth-watering as to finish. Ripper drink. MIKE BENNIE, Wine Front

They say it’s based on the Austrian Gemischter Satz style of field blended dry white wine… cool.

Tangy, fresh, lively with wafts of the exotic, something that reminds me a little of a wet season evening in our place in Darwin, it’s that mix of petrichor and tropical flowers like wild ginger and lemongrass. Really quite a lot going on aromatically as the parts vie for prime position. Some stone/pome fruit and herbal elements as well. Keeps you excited. The palate is sizzling, so tasty, with a burst of fruitfulness that tilts its head towards texturally rich while remaining oh so bright and clear. Really long. Thirst slacking stuff but also makes you want to drink more. I can tell you for experience this is not a one glass kind of wine. I would love to see how it evolves in the bottle but, as I mentioned earlier, I am already out of stock in my stash. Great stuff. Drinking it will make you a happier person. It couldn’t be any more joyful if the Dalai Lama himself had made it using the tears of unicorns and fermented it in gold encrusted tanks lined with rubies found at the end of a rainbow ?? ROSCOE

  4. Racine Picpoul de Pinet 2022
    Racine Picpoul de Pinet 2022

Picpoul from the coastal reaches of the Mediterranean has become in recent years the 'go to wine' in France for Oysters, shell fish and indeed all fish and with good reason as besides having that dry bite and the acidity that goes with it, it also has good body and underlying fruit flavours. I love it - and particularly as it is made by my good fried Francois Chamboissier who is both a talented winemaker and a great gourmet living in a stunning small village in southern France. What a life!

Another winner this year here. Salt spray and lemon pith with green apple skin on the nose. Plenty of fleshy and juicy fruit with a wonderful zing and mineral thread that gives the pallet a refreshing kick along while the long flavours lay down softly and easily. Lovely drive but nothing sacrificed in flavour either.

  6. Shadowfax Midhill Chardonnay 2021
    Shadowfax Midhill Chardonnay 2021
I’m tempted to say that this wine is built on acidity but the flavour itself is wonderful and I don’t want to give the wrong impression. Let’s just say that fruit intensity is excellent and that it’s strung on strict, straight wires. This wine isn’t a telephone line; it’s a high voltage power cable. Yellow stonefruit flavours reach the front porch of green pineapple; sweet pear walks in the direction of honeysuckle. Cedarwood oak is a player and an appropriate one. This wine is complex, intense and lengthy; it’s chardonnay with its gorgeous face on. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  7. Oakridge Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2022
    Oakridge Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2022

Oakridge's Yarra Valley range showcases several sites across the Yarra with a focus on the Upper Yarra vineyards. This 2022 chardonnay flaunts producer style here giving floral and white stone fruit characters with a flinty struck match quality we know and love them for. There's a lot of flavour in this wine whilst keeping their cool. It's light, delicate and oh-so-fresh. To enjoy with seafood, roast chook or a ripe soft white cheese. pws

Ogier Le Temps Est Venu Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2022
Always a lovely wine and the 2022 has an extra level of freshness and crunchy snap. A blend of grenache blanc, roussanne and a good dollop of viognier. Stone fruits, some quartz mineral notes that thread through the mid palate and sprinkle white pepper to finish. Some slippery textural elements provide length and its cut nicely by a streak crunch acid.

  9. Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2022
    Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2022
This is a seriously impressive chardonnay, I think I prefer it to last year's showstopper, at least in its infancy. It's more honed, refined and tightly coiled than the 1.5M. There's plenty of dense, rich and ripe stone fruit and a little flinty smoke, creamy cashew and fennel seed in the mix also. It's incredibly intense and full of energy and lift. The mouthwatering line of sherbet-like acidity takes the full weight of the wine on its shoulders like Atlas, and whisks the wine along like a flying fox as a tapers into a chalky, pleasantly bitter grapefruit finish. A beautiful wine of multi-dimensional excitement. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

(2021 REVIEW) Pale colour. Intense fresh grapefruit, lime, tonic water aromas with vanilla nougat notes. Fresh and creamy textured with grapefruit, lime, bitter lemon, stone fruit flavours, fine loose knit chalky, hint of al dente textures, lovely mid palate viscosity and bell-clear acidity. A resonating finish, highlighting pure fruits and persistent mineral length. Drinking well now, but best to keep for a while to allow the elements to fold. (97) ANDREW CAILLARD MW

(2020 REVIEW) This parcel has performed so impressively in 2020, with trademark white-peach aromas and a subtle lemon-cream edge. The oak is so well integrated here. There’s impressive seamlessness on the palate with citrus-nuanced stone fruit carrying so long and fresh. Thrilling chardonnay. Drink or hold. (98) JAMES SUCKLING

    Shaw & Smith M3 Chardonnay 2022

A sleek, mid-weighted & highly contemporary chardonnay, embellishing a pungent mineral chassis with roasted cashew, nougat and curdy creaminess. Vanilla-cedar oak, an integrated framework. Apricot pith, white peach and nectarine, too. The acidity, palpably natural of feel and really juicy, towing impressive length. Among the better recent iterations of this rightly popular cuvée. 11. Jim Barry Florita Riesling 2022 375ml
Jim Barry Florita Riesling 2022 375ml

I’m doing a few Riesling today, which is not what I’m known for, though I reckon I’m easily the best reviewer of Riesling on TWF. MB, CM, KS and CHC can all eat my dust. Just saying. Aside from the fact that I pretty much never drink Riesling.

Lime, lime rind, lavender, a whole lot of chalk dustiness and crushed rock here too. It’s juicy and fresh, a gin and tonic bitterness, with so much floral perfume, some pepper and spice, and a vigorous fresh squeezed citrus character carrying on a long and powdery finish. Outstanding. Classic Florita, and the best for many years, I feel. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

    Vino Di Sasso Robola 2020
The Sclavos family traces its roots back for centuries in Cephalonia. In 1919, following the Russian revolution, Evriviadis Grandfather returned back to the island of Cephalonia to their property of 6 hectares in the Paliki peninsula where he planted his first vines of Mavrodaphne and Vostilidi. Today the property is run biodynamically and this bottling is 100% robola sourced from limestone rich soils.

  13. Ronchi di Cialla Collio Friulano DOC 2022
Ronchi di Cialla Collio Friulano DOC 2022
This really is one of the most fascinating, inspiring, and singular estates of Italy. An incredible history that spans centuries and that in just over a quarter century has become a benchmark producer for some of the rarest wines in the world. A noble and impressive feat.

The property with its steep terraces surrounded by chestnut, oak and wild cherry trees dates back to the Paiarchte of Aquiuleia and the Republic of Venice. Unusually, it sits in an Alpine valley that runs east-to-west rather than north-to-south 35 km’s from the sea and 35 km’s from the mountains which see harvest start a full two weeks later than anywhere else in Friuli while rarely exceeding alcohols of 12.5%

Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preceded by two days' maceration on the skins; native yeasts; natural static decation. Ageing on lees for at least three months with frequent batonage. 25 - 30 year old vines.

  14. Chalmers Falanghina 2022
    Chalmers Falanghina 2022

Wheat and stone-fruit flavours put on an entirely convincing display here. This is a very attractive white wine. Exotic flowers, pulpy fruit, heaps of texture and enough character to keep you interested. Seek this out. It's very good. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday

This comes from the most recent importation of new clones and varieties to Australia via the Chalmers family who have been championing Italian varietals for decades now. Falanghina refers to two distinct grape varieties in Italy, both grown in Campania primarily this wine is made from the Chalmers imported clone of Falanghina Beneventana, a more minerally inflecked and vibrant version  - we love it!

  15. Casa Rojo Tierra de Blancos La Marimorena Albarino 2022
Casa Rojo Tierra de Blancos La Marimorena Albarino 2022

The 20 year old vineyards sit 15 kilometers distance from the mouth of the Miño River in the subzone of O Rosal, Pontevedra, on the banks of the Miño River. Manual harvest and careful selection of the grapes, cold pre-fermentation maceration with their skins for 10 hours. Finally, it moves to Casa Rojo to age in new French oak barrels for an additional 5 months. During the alcoholic (22 degrees) and malolactic fermentation in the French wood foudres of 11,000 kilos, and later for 4 more months until stabilization prior to bottling.

Apple skin, pear, fresh summer peach with pithy lemon rind, and chalky citrus notes make for an enticing and beguiling nose. Wonderful focus and drive with that tell-tale salinity from its proximity to the coastal shores punctuating the juicy fruit with every sip. Its racy, vibrant, and fresh with punchy fruit. Tangy and crisp with plenty of zip. Lovely, lovely wine! PWS

  16. Little Frances Eleventh House White Vermentino 2022
Little Frances Eleventh House White Vermentino 2022
Little Frances was established in 2012 by Aussie ex-pat Erin Frances Pooley, who set out to make the wines she loves to drink from Californian grapes. Enamoured with the nuance and intrigue of aged white wine (and missing Hunter Valley Semillon from home), Erin started Little Frances in 2012 with just 200 cases of Semillon from a high altitude vineyard in Northern California, farmed by the 3rd generation growers.

We knew of Erin with her work with one of our producers, Hobo Wine Co. Owner Kenny is a friend and mentor and we have been super excited to try her wines and needless to say we were not disappointed.

This blend is vermentino dominant with some aromatic components and textural support from pinot Gris & friulano all from the Apline Valleys, a region which Erin loves for the diversity of varietal selection and what that brings to the table. The trio get fermented in barrels and aged on their lees for a while.
    A beautiful co
mbination of zingy freshness, weight and texture. Erin has captured the pristine fruits in peek ripeness then judiciously and cleverly add nuance as well as light and shade to the final wines through throughtful winemaking.

  17. Geyer Wine Co. Barossa Noir Blanc 2022
Geyer Wine Co. Barossa Noir Blanc 2022

The 2022 growing season was one that started looking like somewhat of a throwback vintage, with a return to a 'wetter' winter,  with milder days leading into spring and summer. We did however suffer a catastrophic hail event early in the growing season, with some of these vineyards sustaining some severe damage. The majority bounced back with the cooler summer days ripening  everything nice and gently. The Barossa vineyards were picked anywhere from Januray 30th to Feb 15th,
while Eden Valley was mid Feb to mid March.

100% hand picked grenache, immediately whole bunch pressed to stainless steel to undergo natural primary fermentation before being roughly racked into one single puncheon and aged with minimal sulphur. At bottling this puncheon was racked as lightly as possible and bottled with no additional sulphur, unfined and unfiltered.

  18. Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2022
    Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2022

Aromas and flavors of sliced apples, lemon curd and hints of stone. Oyster shell. Lime undertones. It’s medium-bodied. Firm and fine phenolics. Tension and focus. Impressive (95) JAMES SUCKLING

Such lovely stylish Chardonnay from this producer. White peach, almond meal, subtle floral and fennel/mint perfume, light cinnamon spice. It’s fluid and mellifluous, almond biscuit with some citrus and apple, fine powdery texture, flecked with pleasant green things, a slight oyster shell flavour and a cool and creamy finish of excellent length, with a subtle sappy aftertaste. Calm, composed and such a lovely thing to drink. Highly recommended GARY WALSH, Wine Front

This is Kumeu River's calling card. Made from a selection of six different sites of which they own four. Whole-bunch pressed and barrel-fermented (20% new). Vines planted from 1989 to 2005.
Some real richness on the nose. Then a green streak. Very fine texture! With Puligny savour and lift. Creamy yet fresh. Bullseye for the style. Good light grip on the end. Convincing. JANCIS ROBINSON MW

The ever-reliable Estate Chardonnay is a success again this year. Very pale in colour with a highly refined perfume of fresh pear, white peach and a little sandalwood. It has already opened up in the last six months and is showing a beautiful light smokiness from reduction. The palate has a superb sheen, with white fruits and flowers slick and refined, harmonious with a kick of savoury spices from well-judged use of oak. There is depth to the fruit, and a gentle creaminess that should build as this ages in bottle. Limes and a hint of charred wood drive to the finish, which is long and focused. This will drink well over the coming decade - I'd be tempted to decant now, or wait six months before approaching THOMAS PARKER MW

The 2022 Estate Chardonnay is nutty and svelte, with white peach, pastry, apricot kernel, brine and even a hint of malt biscuit through the finish. The wine has breadth and girth to it; it's not at all compact, but it's tight in texture. So, all things being equal, it's an exciting Chardonnay. This is from six different sites in the Kumeu area, with wine aging on lees in 20% new oak (just about all François Frères) for approximately 11 months. Lovely acid ERIN LARKIN, Wine Advocate
