  1. Oakridge LVS Willow Lake Chardonnay 2018 375ml
Oakridge LVS Willow Lake Chardonnay 2018 375ml

Winemaker and CEO David Bicknell has proved his worth time and again as an extremely talented winemaker. JAMES HALLIDAY

What is there to say about this superb Yarra Valley winery. Headed up by Dave Bicknell it feels like they can do no wrong. Everything they make from top to bottom is deftly put together and sourced from the Yarra's best vineyards. The quality is always outstanding and the LVS (local vineyard series) is some of the best value Pinot and Chardonnay around. PWS

I’ve probably said it before, and anyone who knows me knows I’m prone to repeating myself, but what a lovely evocative name it is for a vineyard.

It doesn’t need any styling products; there’s not a hair out of place here. White peach and lime, green melon, almond nougat, a whisper of struck match and spice. Smooth and flavoursome, a subtle viscosity interlaid with chalk and flint, some floral mouth-perfume, slight tweak to the finish with citrus rind and grapefruit tang. Right proper Chardonnay here. 2. Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay 2020
    Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay 2020
Bolder expression of The Rocket, lots of flavour, lots of impact. Cinnamon and clove spice, cedar and tobacco, apple, green melon, wet slate going on. Flinty flecks through green apple, cinnamon spice and vanilla with faint smoky notes. Big mouthful of wine with powerful spine of acidity. The finish is a little firm and smoky. Tightly packed, complex, and structured. Impressive. Feels very fancy. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

  3. Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Lusatia Park is in the Upper Yarra, and the cooler climate - coupled with the modest alcohol - led to the decision to take the wine through mlf. It certainly hasn't stripped the elegance or fresh, juicy/limey acidity of this lovely chardonnay. The Yarra Valley length of flavour is on full display, oak (obviously) simply a means to an end. 4. Tarrawarra Chardonnay MDB 2015
    Tarrawarra Chardonnay MDB 2015
This wine is very good. Seldom made, it is a reflection of select, high-performing plots preening in top vintages such as this. The intensity and compelling persistence of flavour careens along a track of pungent mineral and transparent acidity. The fruit, stone fruit all, comes a distant second to the wine's structural pedigree. There is plenty of oak slung across its frame, too. However, it nestles effortlessly into the wine's weight and precision, channelling it toward a long life NED GOODWIN MW, James Halliday's Wine Companion

If the 2012 was a Toorak tractor then this is a Bentley. A stately and sophisticated wine that makes a statement but isn't flashy or overt, rather it relies on the sheer class of its fruit and sophistication of winemaking to say everything that needs to be said. I think, at some stage, the wood was probably quite evident here but now it just provides a very subtle background note of spice and smoke. It's so confident and well executed that it's easy to overlook the inherent power that it, deftly, holds, the intensity of fruit and impressive volume seem to come together with ease and fill your mouth without being overbearing, rather it's quite an enticing character that brings you back for more. Seamless, the overall sense is one of zen like harmony. I only had a small taste, I will be buying some bottles for myself. ROSCOE

  6. The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
Beautiful Isle Wines are a tribute to the vibrant apple crate art of Tasmania's 'Apple Isle' hey day. Based on the family estate Marions Vineyard which was once an apple and pear orchard dating back to the 1800's but no planted to a mix of classic red and white varietals.

The white is all the bits and pieces that don't quite make it into the final blends of their other wines, not because they don't make the cut but because there is a little too much here or there.

This is full of tropical fruit and peppery spice that leaps out of the glass. A touch of white flower and some lilting aromatics make it really enticing. Fleshy and plump on the palate a lovely zip of acidity rounds up all that plush fruit and gives it some nice focus. Plenty of energy on the finish.

  7. Feudi di Guagnano Salerno Fiano 2020
Feudi di Guagnano Salerno Fiano 2020
The name “Feudi di Guagnano” derives from the word “fiéu” (in Latin feudus) which in the Salento dialect means rural district, portion of extra-urban land: in fact our vineyards, smaller than an hectare, dwell in different districts of the Guagnano area. It was born with the aim of saving a few hectares of vineyards cultivated with negroamaro and primitivo abandoned by vintners who were elderly and no longer able to cultivate them. It now incorporates several white and reds from around Salento and represents excellent value given the consistent quality they produce.

Warm citrus cut with salty mineral flecks and a delicate white floral fragrance. Its plush and forward in the mouth but quickly pulls focus with a mineral drive that zips down the middle of the mouth. Crunchy and fleshy at the same time and without of any the flabbyness that you often see from Fiano.

  8. Honky Chateau Ikigai Chardonnay 2021
    Honky Chateau Ikigai Chardonnay 2021
This by somm Chris Ryan of Cummulus Inc so you know he know what good booze is supposed to look like. All from a single vineyard in Healesville handpicked, crushed and pressed to all old 300l barrels. All wild ferment and just a couple of barrels that kicked on through to natural malo and kept for a bit of extra depth. Keen and minimal winemaking - we love it!

Lush, soft and juicy, tropical leaning chardonnay with a really good dose of sweet spice. Slurpy, yummo kinda vibe. Not changing the world but this thing is delicious. Delivers a really good hit of chardy. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

  9. Frankland Estate Smith Cullam Riesling 2021
Frankland Estate Smith Cullam Riesling 2021
The Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate is now farmed using organic viticultural practices resulting in greater depth and concentration to our wines. The vineyard sits on an undulating northern and eastern facing slope on ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. Fruit for this wine was sourced from Geisenheim clone Riesling vines planted in 1988. This clone is renowned for retaining high levels of acidity throughout the vintage, this providing a natural counterbalance to the residual sweetness in this wine.

Handpicked when ripe in the early morning and whole-bunch pressed for fermentation in 1000 litre French oak ‘foudre’ over 4 weeks. Towards the end of fermentation, when the ideal balance of sugar, fruit weight and acidity had been achieved, the wine was chilled to arrest fermentation. FRANKLAND ESTATE

  10. Hesket Chardonnay 2021
    Hesket Chardonnay 2021
Delightfully fresh and focused, with a faintly floral fragrance of lemon, grapefruit and creamy vanilla/bubblegum oak backed by a hint of spice. Initially round and juicy, its intense citrus flavour moves with poise and style down a lean, refined palate before finishing with tautness and brittleness. While it will certainly flesh out remarkably, leaving most cool-climate Australian chardonnay appearing stripped and shy by comparison, it will retain its signature focus and acidity, none of which I would add, is actually added. JEREMY OLIVER

  11. Brash Higgins CHN Chenin Blanc 2021
Brash Higgins CHN Chenin Blanc 2021

Chenin Blanc from McLaren Vale, fermented wild, matured in wood.

Colour and cloudiness, straw and nuts. This wine is wild with flavour. Citrus, saline, honey and handfuls of nuts. Lots of zip but lots of give/texture/flavour. Food-friendly and sit-and-ponder friendly. Dry and grippy on the finish, an attractive squeakiness there, and no shortage of length. It’s a ripper, really. It’s varietal but we are also in the presence of difference. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  12. Mulline Portarlington Chardonnay 2022
    Mulline Portarlington Chardonnay 2022
Barrel fermented with full solids, no mlf, matured in 25% new French barriques and puncheons. A bright green gold. Opens with aromas of white nectarine and peach, lemon verbena and grapefruit pith before revealing attractive savoury, nutty notes. There's real drive and persistence on the palate, too, which culminates in a long, mineral and chalky finish. Excellent. (94) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companino

  13. De Bortoli 'Bella Riva' Fiano 2021
De Bortoli 'Bella Riva' Fiano 2021

The Bella Riva range from De Bortoli highlights the range of classic Italian varietals from the King Valley in Victoria's high country. We talk up the De Bortoli range a lot and this latest release will show you why. Sensational value, true to form with an Aussie twist, and always on song and ready to go.

Incredibly this is almost all off a single vineyard at Moyhu and presents with a lovely citrus, green pear, and sea spray aroma. A touch of citrus pith on the palate from a light run-through barrels but only to add a little dimension of texture and weight. There is a little nutty hint all smashed up with briny, mixed citrus and green fruits. Pure and perfectly balanced.

  14. Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021
Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021

It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. It's quite grippy too, which isn't for everyone but it works here, picking up on the wine's inherent presence. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday

This off the Macedon Edge vineyard sitting at 500 metres above sea level and is all hand-picked, foot stomped and barrel fermented in larger French oak. Pretty incredible fruit from a pretty unforgiving region.

Pip Foster has done something magic here. She has captured all the mineral charge of Macedon chardonnay in a package that is taught but with an intensity and richness of fruit that seems effortless. For someone who is pretty new to the game her first couple of release of this wine are epically good. Power, presence with beautiful definition and plenty of sass.

  15. Valentine Riesling 2021
    Valentine Riesling 2021

This comes of two vineyards - Gordon's Vineyard in Dixon's Vue and Halcyon Vineyard in Chirnside park. Handpicked and whole-bunch pressed juice then stainless steel tanks and old French oak puncheons (500Lt). Natural fermentation and matured on gross lees for nine months prior to blending.

Lovely line and lift, clean quartyz kind of minerally and fresh apple, pear, white tree fruit. Great talcy grip on the palate and punch fruit flavours all coalesce to give this a ton of energy and lift on the palate. Dom's time in the Rhingau is apparent here with lovely texture and weight to the pure and saline drive. Wonderful modern Aussie riesling here. What is not to love!?
