Flavours on the palate are a mix of lemon and peach which transition into gooseberry and fresh herbs. Excellent texture and length with a fine mealy mouthfeel emphasising rocks and clay, fine fruit tannins and acidity. A delicious, salivating expression ready as an aperitif or with fresh shell fish. This by somm Chris Ryan of Cummulus Inc so you know he know what good booze is supposed to look like. All from a single vineyard in Healesville handpicked, crushed and pressed to all old 300l barrels. All wild ferment and just a couple of barrels that kicked on through to natural malo and kept for a bit of extra depth. Keen and minimal winemaking - we love it!

Lush, soft and juicy, tropical leaning chardonnay with a really good dose of sweet spice. Slurpy, yummo kinda vibe. Not changing the world but this thing is delicious. Delivers a really good hit of chardy. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

The Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate is now farmed using organic viticultural practices resulting in greater depth and concentration to our wines. The vineyard sits on an undulating northern and eastern facing slope on ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. Fruit for this wine was sourced from Geisenheim clone Riesling vines planted in 1988. This clone is renowned for retaining high levels of acidity throughout the vintage, this providing a natural counterbalance to the residual sweetness in this wine.

Handpicked when ripe in the early morning and whole-bunch pressed for fermentation in 1000 litre French oak ‘foudre’ over 4 weeks. Towards the end of fermentation, when the ideal balance of sugar, fruit weight and acidity had been achieved, the wine was chilled to arrest fermentation. FRANKLAND ESTATE

The 2021 Moscatel - Macabeo - Airén was produced with 40% Moscatel, 40% Macabeo and 20% Airén that fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and was kept with the lees until bottling. This is very floral, herbal and expressive, a blend to show the landscape, because he thinks the Moscatel is not complete enough to be bottled alone. So, this combines notes of jasmine, chamomile, fennel and grass, and all the wines fermented with indigenous yeasts. It's long and clean and has a dry, chalky finish with a saline twist. It has medium ripeness at 13% alcohol and a pH of 3.3. The whites don't go through malolactic to keep the tension and freshness, and the malic acid is not very high. The Correggia family are a small yet formidable force in the sandy soils of Roero, just west of the Tanaro River in Piedmont. After the tragic death of her husband, Ornella with help from friends propelled the wines of Matteo Correggia to even greater heights. She is now flanked by her children Giovanni and Brigitta and the wines have never looked better.

Fragrant aromas of white flowers, citrus and pear on the nose lead into a finely textured palate. Hints of sweet almond arise. Its fresh and tingly finish with a fine phenolic chew carrying the orchard fruits into a long gentle close. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

Chenin Blanc from McLaren Vale, fermented wild, matured in wood.

Colour and cloudiness, straw and nuts. This wine is wild with flavour. Citrus, saline, honey and handfuls of nuts. Lots of zip but lots of give/texture/flavour. Food-friendly and sit-and-ponder friendly. Dry and grippy on the finish, an attractive squeakiness there, and no shortage of length. It’s a ripper, really. Barrel fermented with full solids, no mlf, matured in 25% new French barriques and puncheons. A bright green gold. Opens with aromas of white nectarine and peach, lemon verbena and grapefruit pith before revealing attractive savoury, nutty notes. 100% Carricante grown on bush vines at 900-1000 metres above sea level. Grapes selected from vineyards located on the Eastern and Southern slopes of Mount Etna. Fermentation lasts 12 days and takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 18°C, with the aid of Benanti’s own indigenous yeast, which was selected from local vineyards through years of research and experimentation in the celllar. The wine then matures in stainless steel on the fine lees for a while and then refines in the bottle for 2-3 months.

The Bella Riva range from De Bortoli highlights the range of classic Italian varietals from the King Valley in Victoria's high country. We talk up the De Bortoli range a lot and this latest release will show you why. Sensational value, true to form with an Aussie twist, and always on song and ready to go.

Incredibly this is almost all off a single vineyard at Moyhu and presents with a lovely citrus, green pear, and sea spray aroma. A touch of citrus pith on the palate from a light run-through barrels but only to add a little dimension of texture and weight. There is a little nutty hint all smashed up with briny, mixed citrus and green fruits. Pure and perfectly balanced.

100% Chenin Blanc

Damien Pinon is the third generation of his family to naturally farm Chenin Blanc in the chalky soils of Vernou-sur-Brenne in the appellation of Vouvray. His vines are old, creating lush, expressive white wines.

The Tuffo cuvee is intensely aromatic and loaded with flavors of quince and apple. It has a wonderful complexity to it, hitting at first with burst of fresh fruit and finishing with a vibrant minerality. This beauty is incredibly food friendly, a great compliment for everything from roasted chicken, to fish in rich sauces to grilled sausages. PWS

 

It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. It's quite grippy too, which isn't for everyone but it works here, picking up on the wine's inherent presence. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, James Halliday

This off the Macedon Edge vineyard sitting at 500 metres above sea level and is all hand-picked, foot stomped and barrel fermented in larger French oak. Pretty incredible fruit from a pretty unforgiving region.

Pip Foster has done something magic here. She has captured all the mineral charge of Macedon chardonnay in a package that is taught but with an intensity and richness of fruit that seems effortless. For someone who is pretty new to the game her first couple of release of this wine are epically good. Power, presence with beautiful definition and plenty of sass.

After working with this Upper Yarra site for over a decade, Adrian Rodda has made the best rendition to date. Helped by the outstanding 2021 vintage conditions, this supreme chardonnay offers a cool fruited spectrum of white nectarine and grapefruit pith with earthy tones of white button mushrooms flecked with spicy and richer notes of crème pattisiere and freshly baked brioche. Its gliding nature gains momentum and flesh across the palate, humming with latent power and an incredible fruit intensity. Spicy undertones interplay with a lively and driving acidity, culminating in a savoury seaspray finish. Yarry Valley at its best for sure. (96) JAMES HALLIDAY CHARDONNAY CHALLENGE


Yeah, so, I am in furious agreement with the gong it got here. So was everyone else. This wine deserves it's plaudits and I assume there are many more to come.
Tension, drive, length that is genuinely pretty remarkable, super switched on winemaking and the best fruit source combined with a great vintage, you have a winning combo. Brilliant wine. Absolutely brilliant. It packs in all the class we expect from Adrian, the latent power and fruit density of Willow Lake, with it there is such wonderful texture and tactile impact, it leaves your mouth feeling almost assaulted, such is the intensity but also there is that buffering extract element that provides a bit of cushioning. This positively oozes quality and style. Brilliant. Better with some age. ROSCOE, PWS

In keeping with its 600m elevation, fruit from the Baxendale vineyard always shows impressive acidity and energy. In a great vintage such as 2021, it brings a tight linear presence, balanced and beautifully integrated, providing an ideal launching pad for bright citrus, stone fruits and aromatic florals. A pretty nose with a touch of reservation - wax, red apple skins, grapefruit and white florals. There's a beguiling fragility here that lures you in. The palate is tense and tight, walking an energtic line that gathers flesh and flavour with air. Its racy nature thrills, signing off with a saline edge to the acidity on the finish. STAFF PICKS 2022 - BRIAN BLANDIN
Immediately enticing with the nose. Hints of struck match, a flinty smokiness, coupled with a subtle touch of apple and pear skin. This follows into excellent freshness and a slightly, chalky minerality on the palate, continuing with the apple and pear flavours, all enhanced by the textural finesse, a benefit of the extended aging on lees in barrel. An absolute winner for me this year, and my stand-out favourite of the Rodda Chardonnays this vintage. Will certainly be my go to for all the festivities this season! BRIAN

Quite an intense verdejo with a flinty streak to the lemon curd, oatmeal and pomelo fruit. A hint of fennel, too. Medium-to full-bodied and flavorful with bright acidity cutting it through, followed by a twist of grapefruit-skin bitterness adding phenolic interest at the end. Vegan. Drink or hold. This is a large but quality co-operative that manages to produce some incredible wines from organic grapes. This is off old-vine fruit and sees some time on lees which adds a wonderful texture and grip to the pure fruits. Cerainly on the more serious side of things here and not your average verdejo.

100% Vermentino from Corsica. The grapes are grown in 2 different parcels across 3 hectares of land and the vines are aged between 8 and 12 years.
Winemaking: The grapes are pressed and settled at cold temperatures. Fermentation lasts for between 15 and 25 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged on its lees and racked twice before being bottled in the Alzipratu cellars between 5 to 8 months following the harvest.
The Fiumeseccu Blanc is pale straw in colour. The bouquet is characterised by floral notes, apple and almond. The palate is one of vibrancy and crisp acidity on a quite saline, minerally base. Totally moreish! DOMAINE ALZIPRATU

100% Assyrtiko from Santorini.
Vinification: Typical, white wine vinification techniques, in stainless steel tanks, under controlled temperature.
Colour: Pale Yellow, with green hues.
Nose: Aromatic, with citrus fruit and minerality.
Mouth: Minerality is evident, as a result of Santorini’s unique terroir. Quite “austere” as wine, with the acidity being the back-bone of the wine, allowing it to age. Petrol notes and honey-suckle appear in aged Assyrtikos, similar to the German and Alsatian Rieslings. DOMAINE SIGALAS

You’ll need a few swirls of the glass to release delicate scents of yellow stone fruit, Mediterranean herb, Spanish broom and baking spice. Linear and delicious, the palate delivers ripe Bartlett pear, nutmeg, a dollop of vanilla and honeyed hazelnut alongside tangy acidity. A hint of saline lends depth to the tangy finish. The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.

They have done it again! This is my go to white for summer with a lovely lemony, floral lilt and powdery, perfumed nose. Gentle and bright with clean and crisp flavours of orchard fruits and white nectarine. Its uncomplicated and delicious with clean, crunchy fruits and a zippy, minerally finish. Ridiculous value. A gorgeously composed chardonnay with a great degree of elegance, showing nectarine, rockmelon, lemon peel, oatmeal and roasted hazelnut characters on the nose, followed by a superbly structured palate that’s laced with ripe fruit intensity and stylish oak infusion. Bright acidity provides balance and frame, while richly textured mouthfeel leads to a persistent sensual finish. SAM KIM, Wine Orbit

Almond, cinnamon, nutmeg, green tobacco, a little gun smoke, nashi pear and nectarine. There’s some real lemonade flavour along with dried pear, a pleasing crunch and freshness to acidity, a friand and dried coconut richness, and a bright finish of excellent length. The 2021 Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese is clear, precise and fresh on the tropical nose that reveals a stony/flinty spiciness intermingled with fine and candied ripe grapefruit aromas. On the nose, it’s an alluring medley of lime, mandarin, lime blossom and crushed rocks. The cleansing palate is finely composed, showcasing its purity of fruit. It’s very fine, intense and long, but it needs some time to flesh out. One for the ages – and it lives up to its name. GABRIELLE POY

Green apples, spiced nectarines, fennel and subtle nougat aromas on the nose allude to its underlying ripeness. On the palate, clever winemaking adds flavours of brioche and hazelnuts, adding to the wine's texture and flavour profile. Earthy notes of wet rocks and white button mushrooms temper the spice and fruit. The finish is pulled together by a lovely line of saline phenolics which adds to the tension and energy.
