  1. Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 2015
Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 2015
It's hard to single out individual aromas from this complex fragrance. The nose invites to explore the many facets of fine fresh fruit, subtle nuances of spice and minerality and a gentle floral notion which all add to an extraordinary sensory experience. On the palate the Braune Kupp excels with a delightful interaction of vibrant acidity and delicious residual sweetness, putting grace and finesse above overwhelming opulence. An Auslese as racy as only the Saar can produce. 18.5 JANCIS ROBINSON MW

  2. Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett 2018
Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett 2018
Purple plum is laced with mint on the nose, and those two elements serve for a succulent and subtly cooling effect on the glossy, polished palate. Tangy plum skin, piquant plum pit and a hint of seedy red raspberry serve for invigoration critical to pushing back against unusually high residual sugar, but without diminishing the sense of richness that is engendered on first sip. “I believe some casks would have benefited from fermenting a bit further,” noted Müller, but the fermentations simply petered out. As a result – though, naturally, must weights in the low 90s are also contributory – nearly 60 grams of residual sugar remain in the finished wine. The impressively sustained finish is amply refreshing as well as transparent to smoky and stony nuances. DAVID SCHILDKNECHT, Vinous

  3. Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2020
Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2020
There’s a bit of mountain stream in the fragrance of the Scharzhofberger Kabinett, but the primary aromas come from local orchards and citrus-fruit groves. Don’t expect an exuberance of sweet temptation on the palate, as zest and spice play at least as significant a role as residual sugar. But what makes the Scharzhofberger so unique is not the fruit, but the zest and spice it is delivered with. It’s still taut at this early stage, not so much a ‘come hither’ but a ‘come up and see me sometime’ Kabinett. MICHAEL SCHMIDT, Jancis Robinson

  4. Markus Molitor Riesling Alte Reben (White Cap) 2020
Markus Molitor Riesling Alte Reben (White Cap) 2020
The 2020 Riesling Alte Reben Mosel (White Capsule) offers a pure and crystalline slate bouquet with ripe and well-concentrated Riesling fruit. Lush and ripe on the palate, this is a very elegant, fresh and tensioned Riesling with intensely aromatic and sustainable fruit and mineral and tannic grip. A fabulous Riesling again and the best representative of Mosel Riesling you can get at this price. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Very attractive nose of white and yellow peach, as well as some blossom. Ripe and well structured, but also clean and bright, without a jot too much weight or volume. This is a very classic dry Mosel. Long, complete finish with serious mineral complexity. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

  5. Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG 2021
Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG 2021
Loosen's 2021 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben is remarkably refined on the nose that exhibits a delicate and flinty scented bright stone fruit and Riesling aroma. The palate is round and playful, almost silky and very elegant, leading to an intense and sustainably saline and tangy finish with fine grip and good tension. Surely one of the highlights in Erni Loosen's 2021 GG series. 12.5% alcohol. (94-96) STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

The 2021er Erdener Treppchen Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Onnerts and Herzlay sectors (situated just above and next to the Prälat), and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, passion fruit, minerals, a hint of cardamom and other earthy spices, and a touch of whipped cream. The wine is still rather firm and racy on the palate but reveals already some of the greatness to come in the long and beautifully subtle and refined finish. The aftertaste is juicy, focused, elegant, and remarkably persistent. What a gorgeous dry Riesling in the making! 2028-2041. MOSEL FINE WINE

  6. Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021
Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021
The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous Kabinett that has to be aged for 10-15 years. Sourced from 80-year-old vines on pure gray slate. Bottled with a spectacular total acidity of 12 grams per liter, but you don't feel the grams of acidity; and believe me, it's serious but balanced by extract and almost 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine

This vineyard site is renowned for charming wines and this has some appley charm in the nose, but there’s also impressive depth and structure behind it. Stunning Amalfi-lemon freshness at the very long and vibrant finish, which is almost dry. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

  7. Christmann Aus Den Lagen Riesling GG 2021
Christmann Aus Den Lagen Riesling GG 2021
The 2021 Riesling Aus den Lagen is based on de-classified grand and premier cru barrels of the domaine. Very pure, fresh and stony but, most of all, reductive on the clear and serious nose, this is a medium-bodied, elegant, refined and persistently salty Riesling with a fine phenolic structure and elegant acidity STEPHAN REINHARDT

Jinkies! This is a different beast. They have replaced the estate with this, which is essentially a "Village" or maybe a "Premier Cru" from them. All classified sites now. I was really looking forward to sitting down and actually having a good look at this new wine from one of my fave Rizza producers. It did not disappoint. It carries all that rocky, pithy, just underripe stone fruit characters I love from the estate. The core is a little more lively than usual, they are always energetic and usually spine tingling in their attack, this is a bit more approachable and piquant. Long, and as is the case with so many of these 21s, the finish is all mineral and saline, so much so it pushes the fruit to the side. A final lick of not insubstantial extract really kicks the finish in to overdrive. Excellent. ROSCOE

  8. Clemens Busch Riesling Pundericher Kabinett 2021
Clemens Busch Riesling Pundericher Kabinett 2021

Clemens and Rita Bush have been pioneers of organic viticulture in Germany since 1984, and today they remain at the forefront of ecological viticulture there. Converting to biodynamics in 2004, they are still one of only a handful of German estates who work with this philosophy. The quality of these wines can only be achieved by the work that the Busch family do in the vineyard.
Grapes are picked very late. This, along with the Marienburg's favourable south facing exposition, allows Clemens to make 80+% of his production into dry wines. Winemaking is non-interventionist, bordering on natural, with spontaneous ferments in ancient wooden fuder, long lees aging and a low (for German Riesling) sulphur regime.

  10. Egon Muller Scharzhof Riesling 2022
    Egon Muller Scharzhof Riesling 2022

A blend of estate fruit from three sites; Saarburg, Wiltingen and Oberemmel and fermented spontaneously, half in stainless steel, half in Fuder.
Lively and subtle nose of ripe yellow apple, white peach and wild flowers. Juicy and elegant with a vibrant acidity that lights this up beautifully. A touch of perceptible grape sweetness at the front of the medium-bodied palate, but the long, wet stone finish is admirably dry. Spot on balance. Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT

… comes across as very fresh, with hints of green apple and lemon and a slightly flinty flicker. The palate is exquisitely light and gently sweet. Herbal notions like yarrow and tansy join in with the lemon and the juicy, tart apple fruit. Much length with this weightlessness. (Off-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

… offers a very delicate and elegant peach-driven nose of candied grapefruit, minty herbs, lime tree, fine herbs, and smoke. The wine proves superbly zesty and straight on the light-weighted and finely creamy palate. The finish is still marked by some CO2 in need of integration, but the length is superb. The after-taste is just slightly off-dry in taste. This is a superb Scharzhof, which will need a few years to fully deliver. 2027-2037. MOSEL REPORT

  11. Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2022
Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2022

This remarkable Saar Kabinett is very crystalline. Stacks of delicate white tree fruit and white flower aromas. Very straight and bright on the light-bodied palate which flashes like the blade of a sabre in the sun. Fantastic precision and subtly salty at the very long and pristine finish. Great aging potential. Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT

The 2022 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett has a very open but tender nose: ripe greengage is bright and edged with a whisper of chervil. The sweetness on the palate kicks in first, but lightness takes over with serene lemon freshness and fine, almost earthy stone. Ripe greengage, delineated by lemon, soaks up that initial sugar and presents it as juicy, ripe fruit. Finesse runs through this, dancing on light Kabinett feet. The finish is merely off-dry. (Off-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

The 2022er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is a barely fruity-styled wine. It is quite herbal and smoky at first and needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal fresh scents of white flowers, minty herbs, bergamot, vineyard peach, and lime zest. The wine is superbly playful and light-weighted on the finely creamy and delicately refined palate. The finish is very delicate and juicy. 2032-2047. MOSEL REPORT

Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spatlese 2022

This magnificent riesling Spatlese combines cool crystalline purity with floral warmth. Very exciting interplay of racy acidity with aromatic grape sweetness and delicate minerality on the medium-bodied palate. The super-long and sleek finish has great stony intensity and mouthwatering freshness that pulls you inexorably back for more of this delicate Saar masterpiece. Great aging potential. Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT

The 2022 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese has an alluring flicker of bergamot on its citrus-scented nose, green-tinged, highly aromatic and not too distant from tart but perfumed passion fruit. The palate brings Mirabelle compote, sweet but laced with citrus freshness. The mouthfeel is super-fine, heightened, like being inside a cloud of fruity, citrus-perfumed, moist air. This is ethereal, scented and elegant, with a headily aromatic finish full of citrus allure. (Sweet) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

The 2022er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese is a sweet wine which has a restrained yet very elegant nose of vineyard peach, minty herbs, pear, and acacia. The wine proves delicately smooth and ripe on the creamy and smooth palate. The finish leaves a fruity and smooth feel of fruits and is superbly intense and long. This Spätlese will need more than a decade to release all its complexity and integrate its elements. 2037-2062. MOSEL REPORT

Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 2022

A cornucopia of ripe summer fruits and flowers pour from the glass of this spectacular Saar Auslese, it's difficult to tear yourself away from the nose. Serious concentration on the medium- to full-bodied palate but in a self-confidently relaxed manner. No drama, much less pomposity. Instead, ever more compelling as it flows over the palate. Fabulous textural complexity at the finely-nuanced finish. Decades of ageing potential! Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT

The 2022 Riesling Scharzhofberger Auslese is still closed on the nose. It takes a lot of swirling to awaken passionfruit and citrus hints. The palate is rich and concentrated with grapefruit-edged peach preserve, almost peppery with its grapefruit spice. Intense yet balanced, fresh, and harmonious. Citrus savor, tart and aromatic, highlights the essential and inherent finesse. Nothing is too much, yet there is baffling intensity. Beautiful. Grapefruit and peach flavors shine on the long finish. (Sweet) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

… a noble-sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It offers a superbly refreshing yet delicately aromatic nose of minty herbs, candied grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, and licorice. The wine is impressive and rich on the fully noble-sweet and intense palate. The feeling of acidity is on the lower side, making this come over as comparatively broad and powerful. The finish is super impressive and hugely long. This mighty and intense Auslese needs a long cellaring time before true greatness. 2037-2072. MOSEL REPORT

Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett 2022

Pie crust and hedgerow aromas with a touch of blackberry. The generous fruit is balanced by strident, but wellintegrated acidity on the light-bodied palate. The racy finish is prototypical Saar riesling. Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT

… opens with tart yet ripe apple flesh, lemon overtones, salty stone, fresh, green yarrow and slight smoke. The palate is very fine, slender, and absolutely juicy with freshness. Ripe lemon accentuates tart green-red apple, yet the subtle residual sweetness also holds notions of Mirabelle that seem to eat up any residual sugar, so the finish is just off-dry. (Off-dry). ANNE KREBIEHL MW

…a fruity-styled wine which proves quite smoky and reductive at first and opens up to reveal aromatic and even rich notes of orange zest, apricot, yellow peach, pineapple, fine spices, and herbs. The 2022 Riesling Wiltinger Braune Kupp Auslese was made from almost fully botrytised fruit. The nose frames alluring tart red apple notes with hints of iron oxide and crushed oxalis leaves. The next sniff brings a full load of ripe, juicy, tart stone fruit. The palate is citrus-sweet, adding passionfruit and lemon tartness to yellow peach compote. 18. Markus Molitor Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese (Green Cap) 2021
Markus Molitor Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese (Green Cap) 2021
The nose of the 2021 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese Green Capsule is still totally reduced, allowing little of the fruit to shine. The palate, however, reveals a tender and light touch here, with the slatey direction, the lemony intensity and the stony depth. Darker and intriguing aspects are at play too, salty and lemony at once, utterly mouth-watering and beyond appetizing. ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous

As pure as a mountain stream, this is extremely bright and racy, but also has a lovely juiciness that pulls you back for more. The 'green' touch to the peachy aroma and the smokiness accentuates the tension. Long, quite compact finish. Needs some time to reach best drinking form. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

The 2021 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese (Green Capsule) is the most reductive of the feinherb Spätlesen at Molitor. Its flavors are bright and precise and beautifully intertwined with the weathered slate aromas and fresh citrus notes. Round and savory on the palate, with a ripe, crunchy and refined mineral acidity, this is a highly delicate and intense Spätlese with a persistently complex finish. Still young, this is a 2021 that will benefit from further bottle aging. It is a Spätlese that could also have been marketed as an Auslese. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Flinty, reductive funk covers up the nose of the 2021 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett Gold Capsule, but the palate comes in with a sweetness combining Granny Smith apple crunch with barley sugar and chervil crushed with salt. The 2021 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Golden Capsule) is clear and very delicate on the saline and flinty nose. On the palate, this is a lush and round, almost creamy-textured Kabinett with fine and crystalline acidity and a savory-pure and refreshing grippy finish. It's almost dry in taste due to the low pH of the 2021 vintage and the pure red slate terroir of Molitor's Würzgarten. This is a complex Kabinett with a very long and mouth-watering finish.
