  1. Algueira Brandan 2017
    Algueira Brandan 2017
This crystalline, fleshy Godello comes from a terraced vineyard that has been painstakingly restored by Algueira's Fernando González. This vineyard lies on the cooler, north facing Orense bank of the River Sil, the opposite side to most of Algueira's holdings. Here the 30 to 80 year old vines are rooted in the losa (schist) soils of the Amandi gorge. The name of the wine pays tribute to the Celtic ancestry of the region by the way (Brandan was a Celtic warlord who originally settled the area). Fermented with natural yeasts only and aged entirely without oak. BIBENDUM

  2. Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Lusatia Park is in the Upper Yarra, and the cooler climate - coupled with the modest alcohol - led to the decision to take the wine through mlf. It certainly hasn't stripped the elegance or fresh, juicy/limey acidity of this lovely chardonnay. The Yarra Valley length of flavour is on full display, oak (obviously) simply a means to an end. 3. Bilancia Tiratore Chardonnay 2019
    Bilancia Tiratore Chardonnay 2019

This was sourced from the whole property, picking the highlights from the site to make the wine.

Quite potent, full and waxy but with flinty elements in the mix and a good lick of river pebble through it all. Lemon on green apple, slate notes, brown spice and faint honey toast, plus savoury almond detail, with supple texture through the finish and yet a cool, and again, almondy finish. Generous, but balanced, proper flavourtown stuff. Very good. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

A very composed and complex chardonnay with fresh peach and grapefruit, as well as almond and hazelnut. Complex and exuberant style. The palate has a very plush, fleshy and cooly composed style with ripe peach and pear and a spicy, nutty finish. Drink now. Screw cap. NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

Rich and intense, but with a drive of acidity that is pure linear energy. Complex, and develops beautifully on opening – I’d surely decant this. Plenty of vanilla oak influence – strudel, nougat and baking spices. A deliciously silky mouthfeel – unctuous yet with a stony minerality underneath. A floral, spiciness develops in the mile-long, sweetening finish. 97pts. Would rank among the best of any New Zealand wines. (97) DAVID WALKER BELL, www.winefolio.com

  4. Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Roulee 2020
Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Roulee 2020
This used to be bottled as the single vineyard Herrenweg and comes from the famous village of Turckheim.
Pale straw yellow colour. The nose is bright and reveals a beautiful panoply of fruity aromas as well as lime blossom. This early character and already quite open style is also found on the palate. The loamy-gravelly terroir of Turckheim produces expressive wines in their youth and the sunny climate of 2020 will have built a charming, expressive and intense wine. The attack on the palate is supple, caressing but firms up on the finish, revealing a ripe and structuring acidity. Beautiful saline finish that lingers on with an attractive fruity profile. Although already very expressive, this wine will age well. OLIVIER HUMBRECHT MW

Effusive citrus and floral aromas with too many nuances to list. Leaps and bounds over the very juicy palate, which splash-lands in a very bright and zesty finish. From mature vines in the mostly alluvial Herrenweg vineyard of Turckheim. STUART PIGGOT, jamessuckling.com

  5. Francois Chidaine Clos Habert 2019
    Francois Chidaine Clos Habert 2019
This Domaine has a number of cuvées that often fall into what would traditionally be called demi-sec territory. However, Chidaine prefers to call these wines tendre, or 'gently dry'. This three-hectare clos sits just above the Clos de Breuil, on a plateau where the silex (flint) gives way to broken chalk and clay.
From a soil composed of clay and coarse flint elements covering the subsoil made up of tuff, the 2019 Montlouis sur Loire Clos Habert opens with a very fine and delicate bouquet of finely concentrated yellow-fleshed fruit aromas along with herbal and flinty notes. Round and intense, with perfectly ripe fruit, fine tannins and delicate acidity, this is a sustainably intense and salty Chenin that is far too young to be served today but will age for some decades. 6. Antoine Olivier Santenay Le Bievaux Blanc 2019
Antoine Olivier Santenay Le Bievaux Blanc 2019
Deeper again, this time a little less width. Freshly energetic, citrus intensity, layers of flavour. So mouth-watering… always a great wine here – bravo. BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

On the nose this is quite pretty, but reserved with just a little meyer lemon, chalk dust and lemon drizzle cake type of feel. Take a sip though and it's a different story, this is bursting with energy and mouth-watering intensity. There's a spear of bristling, lemony acidity that whisks the wine across the palate at some pace, leaving behind it a lovely undercarriage of oily, mouth-coating texture which then gives way to a powdery, sparkling finish. It's screams for a plate stacked high with calamari dusted in semolina and flash fried in good olive oil. Such a charismatic wine. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

    Zind Humbrecht Zind 2019
STAGE 7 -  MOUNTAIN - TOMBLAINE > LA SUPER PLANCHE DES BELLES FILLES 176.5 KM

Zind Humbrecht is one of the unquestioned kings of aromatic whites. His ceaseless drive to create the worlds greatest examples of his varieties is nothing short of remarkable as are the resulting offerings. A devoted proponent of Biodynamics, a gifted presenter and communicator and a towering figure of modern wine, the first Frenchman to be awarded the MW (International Master of Wine) he has justifiably earned his reputation as one of legends of modern wine.

The Zind is one of our favourite bottlings and uses a combination of pinot gris and chardonnay from the Clos Windsbuhl grand cru vineyard. A little time in oak casks gives this a plush and round feel while the addition of gris adds some extra floral elements, spice and hit of quartzy minerality. Its dry with a chalky edge and gentle grip. Clean cut tree fruit are gently supported by oak that plays soft and subtly adding texture and weght rather then and overt oak flavours or aromas. A lip-smacking dry Alsace white that's just humming along right now.

  8. Tarrawarra Chardonnay MDB 2015
    Tarrawarra Chardonnay MDB 2015
This wine is very good. Seldom made, it is a reflection of select, high-performing plots preening in top vintages such as this. The intensity and compelling persistence of flavour careens along a track of pungent mineral and transparent acidity. The fruit, stone fruit all, comes a distant second to the wine's structural pedigree. There is plenty of oak slung across its frame, too. However, it nestles effortlessly into the wine's weight and precision, channelling it toward a long life NED GOODWIN MW, James Halliday's Wine Companion

If the 2012 was a Toorak tractor then this is a Bentley. A stately and sophisticated wine that makes a statement but isn't flashy or overt, rather it relies on the sheer class of its fruit and sophistication of winemaking to say everything that needs to be said. I think, at some stage, the wood was probably quite evident here but now it just provides a very subtle background note of spice and smoke. It's so confident and well executed that it's easy to overlook the inherent power that it, deftly, holds, the intensity of fruit and impressive volume seem to come together with ease and fill your mouth without being overbearing, rather it's quite an enticing character that brings you back for more. Seamless, the overall sense is one of zen like harmony. I only had a small taste, I will be buying some bottles for myself. ROSCOE

Previously labelled 'Unique' Sauvignon Blanc. Cropped from mature vines rooted in the sandy clay soils of Cheverny's Fougères sur Bièvre, Blanc de Salvard is 100% Sauvignon Blanc raised on lees without any oak. The Delaille brothers' 2020 is another succulent and vibrant white, packed with aromas and flavours of pithy citrus, and shot through with smoky, resinous freshness and mouth-watering acidity. 11. The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
The Beautiful Isle White Delicious 2018
Beautiful Isle Wines are a tribute to the vibrant apple crate art of Tasmania's 'Apple Isle' hey day. Based on the family estate Marions Vineyard which was once an apple and pear orchard dating back to the 1800's but no planted to a mix of classic red and white varietals.

The white is all the bits and pieces that don't quite make it into the final blends of their other wines, not because they don't make the cut but because there is a little too much here or there.

This is full of tropical fruit and peppery spice that leaps out of the glass. A touch of white flower and some lilting aromatics make it really enticing. Fleshy and plump on the palate a lovely zip of acidity rounds up all that plush fruit and gives it some nice focus. Plenty of energy on the finish.

The 2020 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese is impressively deep, precise and refined on the nose, with fine slate and highly precise fruit aromas. Round and lush on the palate, with crystalline acidity and highly stimulating salinity, this is a dense, gorgeously piquant and mouth-filling Auslese with remarkable precision, grip and salinity on the finish. 8.5% alcohol. 97 STEPHAN REINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

    Maude Wines Sauvignon Blanc 2021
Elegant, mineral centric with scents of fresh citrus and orchard fruits, herbs and hay, grapefruit and yellow flowers. Flavours on the palate are a mix of lemon and peach which transition into gooseberry and fresh herbs. Excellent texture and length with a fine mealy mouthfeel emphasising rocks and clay, fine fruit tannins and acidity. A delicious, salivating expression ready as an aperitif or with fresh shell fish. Lengthy finish, balanced and well made. Best drinking from 2022 through 2027. CAM DOUGLAS MS

  14. Domaine de Bellene Coteaux Bourguignons L'Eclos des Abeille Chardonnay 2020
Domaine de Bellene Coteaux Bourguignons L'Eclos des Abeille Chardonnay 2020
First point to make here is that this is the freshest and most tense version of this wine to date. White flowers, slightly underripe nectarine, you know that feeling? Crunchy, tangy, leaves your mouth feeling refreshed? Second point to make is there is quite a solid little hit of extract here. I think that's what keeps this wine from being bracing, it's kind of a buffering effect. It races across the palate with intent and gets the old salivary glands working. It is so refreshing but I really wanted some oysters to have with it and we were too "busy" at the time. I think another six months in the bottle should see a little more fruit build up too. ROSCOE

  15. Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Krone Trocken 2020
Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Krone Trocken 2020
Anyone who doubts the greatness of the best wines from the 2020 vintage in Germany should taste this extremely complex and pristine dry riesling. Enormous minerality and structure, in spite of only being medium-bodied. So finely nuanced. Very long finish, in which slatey and chalky elements are beautifully interwoven with the white-peach and Amalfi-lemon aromas. Enormous aging potential. From organically grown grapes. JAMES SUCKLING, jamessuckling.com

...opens with an intense and complex, very elegant and chalky-fresh bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling grapes. Lush and silky as well as crystalline on the palate, this is a dense, very complex, finessed and grippy-mineral Krone with a firm, persistently salty and mineral finish. This is an impressive dry Riesling from predominantly 60- to 70+-year-old vines rooting deep in slate soils covering limestone sub-soils. Drink it from a Burgundy glass, in which the wine sits like an open book revealing all about Riesling, chalk and slate. A gorgeous wine with very fine tannins, lingering salinity and dense and juicy, lemony fruit. STEPHAN REINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

  16. Matthiasson Napa Valley Linda Vista Chardonnay 2021
Matthiasson Napa Valley Linda Vista Chardonnay 2021

Inviting aromas of lemon curd, wet stone and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied with lively acidity. So fresh and clear on the palate. Refreshing and delicious. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Golden Delicious apples, yellow peaches, musk melon, and honey greet the nose and persist through to the palate. Medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality.

For complexity, completeness, and balance, we achieve a diversity of ripeness by using the traditional method of harvesting the fruit a number of different times during the ripening period. The earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness. We whole-cluster press all of the grapes, then ferment and age the wine in seasoned French oak barrels, with only native yeast. No battonage (lees stirring) or racking. We allow two-fifths of the barrels to go through malo-lactic fermentation. MATTHIASSON
