  1. Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Lusatia Park is in the Upper Yarra, and the cooler climate - coupled with the modest alcohol - led to the decision to take the wine through mlf. It certainly hasn't stripped the elegance or fresh, juicy/limey acidity of this lovely chardonnay. The Yarra Valley length of flavour is on full display, oak (obviously) simply a means to an end. Near the new cellar, in the mention owned exclusively by our family, we have a Chardonnay vineyard, which we use for the production of Solea, together with a percentage of Nebbiolo.
Fermentation takes place exclusively in wooden vats using a pied de cuve made from indigenous yeasts and lasts about ten days. The wine ages in a neutral oak barrel for about two years. Roagna

  4. Pieropan Calvarino 2021
    Pieropan Calvarino 2021

There’s something especially spicy and enticing about the 2021 Soave Classico Calvarino. White smoke and honeyed floral aromas give way to ground ginger and crushed green apples. It’s deeply textural, nearly oily, and young peach nuances swirl throughout. Residual acids keep you returning to the glass as zesty yellow citrus offsets liquid stone through the youthfully tense finale. This is an absolutely stunning performance for Calvarino, and as primary as it is today, I can’t help but pour another glass. The 2021 was matured entirely in glass-lined cement tanks for one year. The 2021 Calvarino is a powerful terroir representation. (94) ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

The 50th anniversary vintage. The first single vineyard white wine of Italy. Tuffeau and basalt. Calvarino is fermented in cement rather than the tank, as is used for the Classico. A broader sash of orchard fruits, verging toward toffee apple, mingle with ginger, orange blossom, rosemary, sage, almond and jasmine. 20-30% Trebbiano di Soave due to its affinity with volcanic soils. Saline and sappy, whilst also resinous and intense. A powerful wine that is paradoxically pixelated of detail, immensely saline and beautifully light on its feet. The sort of wine I challenge anyone not to love. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. NED GOODWIN MW, JamesSuckling.com

  5. Minius Godello 2021
    Minius Godello 2021
This one is a super-duper special. That's the technical term we use here. Godello is one of our favorite whites out of Spain with that mineral twang and crystalline fruit it's such a winner.

40 year old vines are grown in Oimbra on a mix of sand, schist and silty-clay soils. The Godello is de-stemmed, cold macerated for a few hours and fermented cool and quiet in stainless steel. A lively golden yellow and nice and bright in the glass, Minius smells clearly of Monterrei's granitic sand soils and the golden orchard fruits one expects from Godello. There are hints of fennel, citrus and subtle florals too, and the palate is a beautifully balanced rich-round style typical Godello golden oil is cut with delicate herbal bitterness and there is excellent freshness to finish.

  6. Rebholz Riesling vom Schiefer 2021 (blue slate)
Rebholz Riesling vom Schiefer 2021 (blue slate)
The 2021 Burrweiler Vom Schiefer Riesling trocken offers a clear, pure and refined but intense, slate-driven nose with iodine notes. Round and fresh on the palate, this is a saline, mouth-filling and very elegant Riesling with juicy fruit, fine tannins, stimulating savory acidity and lingering salinity. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Effusive nose with a whole garden of fresh herbs, also some delicate stone fruits. Stunning minerality on the very focused and light-footed palate. The acidity at the properly dry finish may be a bit challenging for some, but we find no hint of unripeness there, rather we find it invigorating and excitingly stony. Rebholz Riesling vom Muschelkalk 2021 (limestone)
The 2021 Siebeldingen Vom Muschelkalk Riesling trocken is pure, fresh and spicy on the intense and pretty complex nose. Lush and salty-savory on the palate, this is a dense, refreshing and mineral, even chalky Riesling from younger vines in the Grosse Lage Im Sonnenschein. The finish is enormously saline but also textured and provided with fine tannins. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

A remarkably generous, dry riesling for this cool and high-acidity vintage. A whole basket of stone and citrus fruit plus yellow apple with a whiff of smoke. Creamy mid-palate, then a very chalky texture at the long finish. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

  8. Dicey Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021
    Dicey Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021

This fragrant, full-bodied wine was matured for 11 months in oak barrels (16% new).  Offering strong, ripe stonefruit flavours, gently seasoned with oak, it is savoury, with very good depth, vigour, complexity and harmony, and a lengthy finish.  Best drinking 2024+ WINESTATE

Ripe, almost luscious chardonnay with peach, melon, nutty oak and yeast lees flavours supported by a backbone of ripe acidity. Mellow, accessible wine that is probably at, or close to, peak condition right now. BOB CAMPBELL, The Real Review

Aromas of garden herbs, grapefruit and oyster shell. Medium-bodied with very clear jasmine tea character coming through. Not your typical chardonnay, but tasty and well composed all the same. Sustainable. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Friand and spice, floral, melon and grapefruit. Firm acidity, a little green apple, distinctly flinty and chalky, with something of a sappy-sour-edged, yet also slightly creamy almond finish of good length. Pretty tight, but very nice. GARY WALSH, winefront.com

  10. Marco de Bartoli Lucido IGP Terre Siciliane (Catarratto) 2022
Marco de Bartoli Lucido IGP Terre Siciliane (Catarratto) 2022
Marco de Bartoli was an Italian trialblazer. He singlehandedly saved true Marsala from extinction. His children have been leading the charge for the past decade and while they're staying true to their roots of Marsala production and guarding prized old barrels, their curious minds have also side-stepped into dry whites and reds made from native varieties, like this cataratto.

Lucido translates as 'lucid' and is made from cataratto. It's fresh, waxy and finely boned, both texture and savoury nuances collide in the bottle. This is the summer shoreline in a glass, ripe citrus, broken seashells and a saline tinge mix with a tangy acidity delivering a lip-smacking finish.

With the recent focus on Etna, it's easy to forget the other half of the island, here's your chance to be reacquainted (or introduced) to the charismatic Sicilian wines of Marco De Bartoli. GABRIELLE  POY, PWS

90% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne from 50-80 year old vines from Paradis and Saint-Joseph granite sites raised in 10% new oak.
The 2022 Saint Joseph Le Paradis Saint Pierre Blanc is even better, and it's up with the finest Saint Joseph Blancs I've ever had. Quince, honeyed minerality, toasted spice, and green almond-like nuances all define the nose, and its more Hermitage Blanc than Saint Joseph Blanc with its medium to full-bodied richness, gorgeous overall balance, and incredible length. It has some background oak and will benefit from a year or two of bottle age, but I suspect it will have over a decade of prime drinking. Don't miss this beauty. (97) JEB DUNNUCK

The 2022 Etna Bianco is delicate and floral with a nuanced blend of nectarine and wet stones. It’s soft and enveloping with a pretty inner sweetness up front and zesty acidity that enlivens its core of citrus-tinged apples. This finishes long, staining, yet still fresh, with sour lime and savory spice notes. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

  14. Walsh & Sons Burnside Chardonnay 2023
Walsh & Sons Burnside Chardonnay 2023

Here’s an offbeat, but interesting style of Chardonnay. It’s kind of cloudy, distinctly saline, certainly a life aquatic here, curry powder, white peach and pink grapefruit. It’s spicy, salty, has a sort of milk powder richness, but also fresh acidity and a quinine-like tang, chalk dust texture, and a juicy lime and cinnamon dusted finish of fine length and salt crusted tang. Different, but very good. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Light-mid yellow colour, full-ish for a 2023, the bouquet backing this up with a lot of buttery complexity, croissant / buttered sourdough, the palate soft and round with a viscosity all adding up to a vigorous malolactic. Texturally very seductive. HUON HOOKE, The Real Review

  15. Edi Keber Collio Bianco 2021
    Edi Keber Collio Bianco 2021

The Keber family settled at Localita’ Zegla 300+ years ago, when Collio (Italy) and Brda (Slovenia) belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today, they have been instrumental in the push for a new DOC, one that would be a world first between two countries and unite Collio and Brda once more. In 2008 they took the radical step to produce just a single white wine, a blend of Friulano, Ribolla and Malvasia that they feel best expresses the uniqueness of their territory. The wine has become an Italian/Slovenian benchmark.

The vineyards are all terraced and the climate is moderated by two competing elements, warm breezes from the Adriatic and the chilly Bora from continental Europe. Farming is certified organic and Kristian uses some biodynamic preparations.

A blend of 70% Friulano with 15% each of Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia. Typically Friulano gives the body and structure, Ribolla for acidity and freshness and Malvasia for complex aromatics. The wine is co-fermented with natural yeasts (in concrete) and aged in concrete for 16 months. This extended ageing, over two winters, allows for a slow natural decantation of the sediment and the wine can be bottled unfiltered. Aromas of white stone fruits, apple, almond and yellow flowers. There's the classic textural push and pull on the palate that the Friulano grape, and wines from Collio, do so well, adding complexity and intrigue. The palate balances a sense of richness and body with minerality and an almost salty finish that really holds your interest. Great, and interesting, white wine.

  16. Pieropan Soave Classico 2023
    Pieropan Soave Classico 2023
Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards (including Pigno, Becco, Boiolo, Tondo, Palestrello and La Santa) and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.

Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village.

Mostly Garganega with about 10-15% Trebbiano di Soave, this is wonderfully aromatic - not a common feature of Soave - with floral notes (cherry blossom), citrus, stone fruit and almond. The palate is delicate and focussed, with excellent depth and lovely overall balance.

  17. Albino Rocca Cortese 2021
    Albino Rocca Cortese 2021

Overlook Rocca’s whites at your peril! As far as we know, this unique wine is the only Cortese grown within the boundaries of Barbaresco, so perhaps the fact that the Roccas grow it should be clue enough that we’re on to something special. The one-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines is rooted in Montegrosso d’Asti (in Barbaresco, just south of Asti) on clay and limestone soils. The wine was aged in a mix of stainless steel and mature French oak (just six months in barrel).

It’s an engagingly textural white with layers of fresh orchard fruits, saline minerality and some wild herbs, all underpinned by chalky freshness and closing with a twist of grapefruit bitters and phenolic chewiness. Cortese rising!

  18. Shaw & Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay 2022
Shaw & Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

An exceptional vintage for white wines. A lower pH, inherent freshness and phenolic bite, the artillery that delivers the impressive structural latticework necessary for further development. Really classy. Subdued aromas of cinnamon, sesame, quince, ginger and toasted hazelnut, with the barest hint of fruit. Better this way. The mid-weighted palate is pliant, nicely chewy and multilayered. The finish is exceptionally long, although I look forward to tasting again in another six or eight years after things unravel and meld. Stunning chardonnay, aligned with top-tier Chassagne and certainly among the finest tasted in recent memory (97) NED GOODWIN, Jamessuickling.com

A cascade of yellow grapefruit juice, juiced green apples and lime sorbet. Elderflower and Acacia blossoms. A hint of green coconut and lemongrass. It's full of citrus zest with an almond milk creaminess and roast raw macadamia on the finish. Nutmeg, tahini and baked anzac biscuits. A harmony of high tones and deep base notes that presents a birds eye view of Hills chardonnay. There is real power and weight here but with plenty of fruit tension and enough malo buffering. A joy to drink now and will cellar 5-8 years. I can see this served beside a river of raclette on hot bread. (96) SHANTEH WALE, Wine Pilot

    Onannon Mornington Pinot Noir 2023

Fruit comes off seven sites across the peninsula, some of which make up the single-vineyard wines, and this very much the sum of its parts. It’s excellent. Aromatic, enticing, savoury and spicy, full of cherries and pips, Middle Eastern spices, a hint of mint and just a skerrick of oak. Medium bodied, laced with supple tannins and mouth-watering acidity. It fits the bill perfectly for a drink-now pinot. (95) JANE FAULKNER, James Halliday’s Wine Companion

Strawberry, raspberry, spice, roses, just a little autumnal and earthy.  It’s bright and frisky, juicy red fruit and blueberry flavour, some sage and mint, fine-grained dusty tannin, a pleasant sappiness, with a lively spicy finish of good length. Plenty of energy and refreshment. Good now, likely better next year. GARY WALSH

Bouchard Beaune de Chateau 2021 1er
The 2021 Beaune du Château Blanc 1er Cru has an attractive nose of Golden Delicious and Williams pear aromas, nicely focused though not intense. The palate is well balanced with a taut bead of acidity, quite vibrant and slightly peachy towards the pithy finish. Certainly a step up from the Beaune Blanc this year. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

Aromas of citrus oil, crisp green apple, white flowers and pastry cream introduce the 2021 Beaune 1er Cru du Château Blanc, a medium-bodied, satiny and charming wine that's bright and precise, concluding with a saline finish. WILLIAM KELLEY, wineadvocate.com

Slightly more prominent wood sets off slightly riper aromas of white orchard fruit, floral wisps and a similar hint of lemon zest. There is even better volume to the less refined medium weight flavors that also terminate in a clean, dry and youthfully austere finale. The 2020 Beaune du Château Blanc 1er Cru has a light and fresh apple blossom and orange pith scented bouquet, just a hint of camomile in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a zesty opening, fine acidity, quite lively with a touch of stem ginger towards the finish. This is worth seeking out. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

The 2020 Beaune 1er Cru du Château Blanc had been assembled in foudre when I tasted it. Exhibiting aromas of pear, hazelnuts, white flowers, freshly baked bread and orange oil, it's a medium to full-bodied, chalky and incisive wine with lively acids and a saline finish. WILLIAM KELLEY, wineadvocate.com

More open, good freshness, a touch of barrel - almost coconut. Extra freshness that I wasn't expecting - quite a mineral freshness and coolness to this wine. I'd give it a year for the, still modest oak to fade. Fine and creamy finishing with a faintly phenolic texture - that's a great Beaune for the price! BILL NANSON, burgundyreport.com

    Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay 2023
Gee, this is an intense iteration of HCE Chardonnay! Very concentrated. Melon, lime, spice and aniseed, almond too. The texture is very flinty and firm, the acidity is mouth-watering and offers plenty of zip, and there's some nutty umami flavours in the mix too. Length is excellent. Preserved lemon and green olive in the aftertaste. It's perhaps a little less 'user-friendly' as a young wine than is usual, but wow, it's quite something. GARY WALSH

Light yellow and a very restrained bouquet that is clean, fresh and scented with lightly toasted cashew and a whiff of smoky flintiness. Good depth of fruit flavour and length, rounded and finishing with a trace of grip. With time it could build more complexity but already makes an attractive and refreshing drink. Made with 85% Carricante and 15% Catarratto, the Graci 2022 Etna Bianco has a distinct mineral note that adds extra sharpness and brightness. Over the years, the percentage of Carricante has increased in the blend. This grape's salty-mineral profile takes center stage. 25. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Riesling 2023
Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Riesling 2023

One of the very best Isolation Ridge rieslings produced. It’s from an exceptional vintage showing the pristine purity and minerally tension of great rieslings. Comes from a combination of clones planted in 1988. Now this is not your usual riesling. It was left on lees for nine months and about 10% was matured in oak. The result is a wine of tremendous texture, with an intricate weave of fine acid and intensely flavoured fruit. Has a crunchy vibrant minerality on the finish. Exceptional wine. (97) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot

Sourced from the original 1988 plantings on ironstone gravels over clay. Some guava and dried mango exoticism, makrut lime leaves and wet stones. It's super precise and poised, a wine of balletic balance with a piercing acid line of jaw dropping intensity and drive. A masterclass in coiled tension, restrained power and the beauty of Frankland River riesling. (97) NICK RYAN, Weekend Australian

Frankland Estate Smith Cullam Riesling 2023
If Isolation Ridge is a melt-in-your-mouth kind of Riesling, Smith Cullam is all racy, ceaseless energy in the glass. It offers quite the contrast, even though the fruit is also sourced from the Isolation Ridge vineyard. Speaks with an airy, floral aroma intensity, citrus and talc. Hunter Smith’s winemaking breaks the usual Aussie Riesling mould in its use of whole bunches and fermentation (40%) in seasoned 500L oak as well as in stainless steel, followed by nine months on lees. Delicate, lemony and spicy with a barley sugar-like sweet tingle on the middle palate. Texture is building and a distinctive flintiness combined with vibrant acidity completes one impressive Riesling. And, it might be added, it’s very much a young wine in building mode.
