  1. Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
Lusatia Park is in the Upper Yarra, and the cooler climate - coupled with the modest alcohol - led to the decision to take the wine through mlf. It certainly hasn't stripped the elegance or fresh, juicy/limey acidity of this lovely chardonnay. The Yarra Valley length of flavour is on full display, oak (obviously) simply a means to an end. Ogier Le Temps Est Venu Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2022
Always a lovely wine and the 2022 has an extra level of freshness and crunchy snap. A blend of grenache blanc, roussanne and a good dollop of viognier. Stone fruits, some quartz mineral notes that thread through the mid palate and sprinkle white pepper to finish. Some slippery textural elements provide length and its cut nicely by a streak crunch acid.

Rebholz Riesling vom Schiefer 2021 (blue slate)
The 2021 Burrweiler Vom Schiefer Riesling trocken offers a clear, pure and refined but intense, slate-driven nose with iodine notes. Round and fresh on the palate, this is a saline, mouth-filling and very elegant Riesling with juicy fruit, fine tannins, stimulating savory acidity and lingering salinity. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Effusive nose with a whole garden of fresh herbs, also some delicate stone fruits. Stunning minerality on the very focused and light-footed palate. The acidity at the properly dry finish may be a bit challenging for some, but we find no hint of unripeness there, rather we find it invigorating and excitingly stony. Rebholz Riesling vom Muschelkalk 2021 (limestone)
The 2021 Siebeldingen Vom Muschelkalk Riesling trocken is pure, fresh and spicy on the intense and pretty complex nose. Lush and salty-savory on the palate, this is a dense, refreshing and mineral, even chalky Riesling from younger vines in the Grosse Lage Im Sonnenschein. The finish is enormously saline but also textured and provided with fine tannins. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

A remarkably generous, dry riesling for this cool and high-acidity vintage. A whole basket of stone and citrus fruit plus yellow apple with a whiff of smoke. Creamy mid-palate, then a very chalky texture at the long finish. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

  6. Dicey Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021
    Dicey Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021

This fragrant, full-bodied wine was matured for 11 months in oak barrels (16% new).  Offering strong, ripe stonefruit flavours, gently seasoned with oak, it is savoury, with very good depth, vigour, complexity and harmony, and a lengthy finish.  Best drinking 2024+ WINESTATE

Ripe, almost luscious chardonnay with peach, melon, nutty oak and yeast lees flavours supported by a backbone of ripe acidity. Mellow, accessible wine that is probably at, or close to, peak condition right now. BOB CAMPBELL, The Real Review

Aromas of garden herbs, grapefruit and oyster shell. Medium-bodied with very clear jasmine tea character coming through. Not your typical chardonnay, but tasty and well composed all the same. Sustainable. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Vineyard sits at 600m ASL, planted 1995. All three Rodda Chardonnays are made pretty much the same way, which is a good way to express region/site…
Friand and spice, floral, melon and grapefruit. Firm acidity, a little green apple, distinctly flinty and chalky, with something of a sappy-sour-edged, yet also slightly creamy almond finish of good length. Pretty tight, but very nice. GARY WALSH, winefront.com

  8. Marco de Bartoli Lucido IGP Terre Siciliane (Catarratto) 2022
Marco de Bartoli Lucido IGP Terre Siciliane (Catarratto) 2022
Marco de Bartoli was an Italian trialblazer. He singlehandedly saved true Marsala from extinction. His children have been leading the charge for the past decade and while they're staying true to their roots of Marsala production and guarding prized old barrels, their curious minds have also side-stepped into dry whites and reds made from native varieties, like this cataratto.

Lucido translates as 'lucid' and is made from cataratto. It's fresh, waxy and finely boned, both texture and savoury nuances collide in the bottle. This is the summer shoreline in a glass, ripe citrus, broken seashells and a saline tinge mix with a tangy acidity delivering a lip-smacking finish.

With the recent focus on Etna, it's easy to forget the other half of the island, here's your chance to be reacquainted (or introduced) to the charismatic Sicilian wines of Marco De Bartoli. GABRIELLE  POY, PWS

Samphire, ripe grapefruit, apple crumble, some spice. Juicy, savoury too with an umami quality of white mushrooms and white miso, Scotch Finger biscuit, flinty with it, saline and savoury on a long lime-laced finish. Complex and individual. Such a great thing to drink. GARY WALSH

90% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne from 50-80 year old vines from Paradis and Saint-Joseph granite sites raised in 10% new oak.
The 2022 Saint Joseph Le Paradis Saint Pierre Blanc is even better, and it's up with the finest Saint Joseph Blancs I've ever had. Quince, honeyed minerality, toasted spice, and green almond-like nuances all define the nose, and its more Hermitage Blanc than Saint Joseph Blanc with its medium to full-bodied richness, gorgeous overall balance, and incredible length. It has some background oak and will benefit from a year or two of bottle age, but I suspect it will have over a decade of prime drinking. Don't miss this beauty. (97) JEB DUNNUCK

  12. Fighting Gully Road Chardonnay 2022
    Fighting Gully Road Chardonnay 2022

Utterly delicious and, yet, so serious in intent and presence. Friendly, fragrant in lemon blossom, nectarine, white peach, ruby grapefruit, nougat and flint. Seamless in presentation, ripe in fruit quality and nicely weighted oak with brulée custard notes. It brings Beechworth energy and fresh acidity to the fore - juicy and delicious. Quietly complex, too. JENI PORT, winecompanion.com

A strongly regional wine boasting the typical knit of tension, judicious oak and glazed stone fruits, albeit, sewn together with a looser weave. A premium wine, no two ways about it. But a touchstone to that which lies beyond. And in terms of Beechworth chardonnay, that is a great deal. Drink or hold. Screw cap. NED GOODWIN MW, jamessuckling.com

  13. Albino Rocca Cortese 2021
    Albino Rocca Cortese 2021

Overlook Rocca’s whites at your peril! As far as we know, this unique wine is the only Cortese grown within the boundaries of Barbaresco, so perhaps the fact that the Roccas grow it should be clue enough that we’re on to something special. The one-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines is rooted in Montegrosso d’Asti (in Barbaresco, just south of Asti) on clay and limestone soils. The wine was aged in a mix of stainless steel and mature French oak (just six months in barrel).

It’s an engagingly textural white with layers of fresh orchard fruits, saline minerality and some wild herbs, all underpinned by chalky freshness and closing with a twist of grapefruit bitters and phenolic chewiness. Cortese rising!

  14. Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2023
    Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2023
From a section of the Tiers vineyard close planted in 2003 using the Bernard clones 76 and 95. This is same same, but different to the old vine Tiers, a little fleshier, but it’s the texture that’s the main point of difference.

White stonefruit, pear, quite spicy and slightly dusty/peppery, honey and lime. The texture is a highlight, chalky and ‘mineral’, ripe lime and honey, white peach, spicy cinnamon oak, almond meal, with plenty of citrus bite on a finish of excellent length. Marvellous wine. So emphatic in its statement of vineyard and grape variety, not least quality.  GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

To quote winemaker, Brian Croser, the ’23 Chardonnays are far from “overt.” I find that re-assuring, the vintage speaks and it’s beautifully fine with purity of fruit and acidity layered naturally, succinctly, making 1.5m poised for further ageing. Meyer lemon, lemon drop, nectarine, peach aromas with a hint of cashew – in other words an alluring introduction. Still incredibly youthful, offers a core of perfectly pitched citrus and stone fruits in balance and concentrated. Textural, too, as it comes together with nougat and roasted nuts joining fruit and gently spiced oak. Everything is in place. The only question remaining: to drink now, or not . . . 15. Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2023
    Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2023

Pear, grapefruit and lemon oil, almond meal and biscuit spices. It’s a bright and tight wine, a distinctly citrus-laced line of acidity, grapefruit, green olive and honey lemon, it’s flinty too, though has a light creamy cashew gloss to temper, and the finish is long with a zesty aftertaste. This seems like a long term wine, and while it’s kind of brittle as at now, its intensity and length mark it out as a classic Chardonnay. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

If Tiers 1.5m Chardonnay hails from the “new” block of French Bernard clones planted in 2003, fruit for this Tiers Chardonnay is off the “old” block, the original block established in 1979. A cool vintage and low yields bring good concentration, but what really characterises the wine is its open and inviting summery bounce and energy. It rocks. Orange and citrus blossom aromatics, a hint of honeysuckle join aromas of apple, citrus, grapefruit, white peach and spice. Lemony bright acidity rules the palate, enticing tastebuds and melding with lemon sorbet, zest, stone fruit and a distinctive quince tang against a nougat warm and buttery texture. Layer upon layer of concentrated flavour . . . and bounce. JENI PORT, Wine Pilot

  16. Agnes et Didier Dauvissat Chablis 2022
Agnes et Didier Dauvissat Chablis 2022

The 2022 Chablis Village, matured in stainless steel for 6 to 12 months, has a sprightly and energetic bouquet with citrus peel and Granny Smiths. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, crisp malic fruit. There’s just the right amount of tension and salinity on the finish to keep you coming back for more. Bravo. NEAL MARTIN

5.5 ha of Chablis in total – this representing 3 of those hectares in Fyé, almost a continuation of Blanchots. A more linear nose with extra herbed notes. Broader, slightly more incisive and structural – still melting over the palate – here with lots of salinity and a long, tasty, finish. This to wait for – 1-2 years – it’s very good and it’s classic Chablis! BILL NANSON

An intriguing example which marries weight and concentration on the palate with bright acidity and a distinct mineral edge. This will appeal to lovers of classic Chablis but also those looking for a bit more generosity of fruit. Long finish, with a saline tang. DECANTER

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - An assembly of parcels, on either side of the plateau of Beines, near Vauligneau and above the grand crus...The first sniff is modest, the second and the wine has already opened and added some perfume – nice. Hmm – lovely minerality over the palate – juicy and melting with a nice structure – this is just too delicious and slightly floral in the finish – this already drinking beautifully – bravo! BILL NANSON

A fine example of Petit Chablis, with crisp acidity to complement the pear and peach fruit on the palate. Slightly peppery, with a hint of bitterness adding freshness and complexity on the finish. Will drink well for several years. DECANTER

  18. Vasse Felix DHJ1 Single Plot Chardonnay 2022
Vasse Felix DHJ1 Single Plot Chardonnay 2022

The most successful chardonnay cuvée from this producer, at least in this vintage. All Gingin clone, the regional stalwart. At times, straight renditions can be so intensely flavored that they are hard to drink. In this instance, however, there is ample pastry dough, peach and cream accents that serve to sublimate the sour acidity into a more integrated whole. The scintillating length is unimpeachable. This should age very well. Drinkable now, but best from 2027 NED GOODWIN MW, jamessuckling.com

In all honesty, in pure drinking pleasure terms, I like this every bit as much as the Heytesbury. It’s so exotic, so cool, so (attractively) reductive, so thoroughly washed with nectarine and citrus, so wild with assorted floral characters. This is what single plot/vineyard/site wines are all about. It’s a quality wine but it’s also different, and that difference deserves to be showcased, and celebrated. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

That's a wild wine! I opened that without really paying attention. Poured a glass. Had a sniff... yeah nice... had a chat to my wife for a few minutes before I picked the glass back up. No talking after that.
Deep, there's a sweetness here (hold tight gang) that's reminiscent of biting in to a perfectly ripe nectarine, yeah, juicy almost in how primary that character feels. Shocking. Then it's an explosion from there. Powerhouse through and through. Concentrated, large in scale and dimension. Hugely intense but just skips feeling overwhelming, rather it's massive presence walks that tightrope of power and freshness that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Brilliantly fresh. Long. Satisfying and paradoxically uplifting, considering its heft, this is a Chardonnay Vasse should be proud of. I think it's this over the current Heytesbury for me. Give it time. Don't stress for 10-20 years. Brilliant.
I don't know what to tell you here. I'm clearly a Vasse Chardonnay fan boy, but I'm still regularly surprised by how great these wines can be.
This has everything for everyone. All the components needed for a great Chardonnay are wrapped up in this bottle, also the label is old school, bonus point for that. What crazy juice.
Buy it to drink but if you have a cellar please buy it for that. As great, it really is, as it is today, this thing will blow your fedora off (hipsters... what is with those hats?) if given the time. ROSCOE

  19. Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG 2022
Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG 2022

Intensely spicy and flinty nose with stacks of anise and fennel seed character. High tensile strength on the palate although it is only medium-bodied. Great wet stone minerality and herbal intensity at the extremely long focused finish. Drinkable from release, but best from 2024. (97) STUART PIGGOT, Jamessuckling.com

The 2022 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs was purchased in 1993, just above the Prälat site, higher in elevation. The exact age of the vines is unknown, but they are estimated to have been planted in the 1880s. Tangerine is hauntingly hinted at on the nose; the palate brings lasting allure of tangerine, peel and pulp, intense and headily aromatic, yet grounded, profound, super clear, luminous with citrus aroma, and so vivid. Wow. (Dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Loosen's 2022 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben shows clear, bright and finely spicy slate fruit. On the palate, it is dense and juicy and develops lots of pressure and very good length. On the finish, it is pure, spicy and salty. Here, the old vines and the soil have served well in the dryness of the summer. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG 2022

The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs was made from centenarian vines, in the family since 1911. The nose hints at creaminess but not much more. The palate comes in with a lovely, pithy astringency coating the mouth with citrus intensity. This fills mouth and mind with stony elegance and citrus vividness, finishing on Meyer lemon edged with grapefruit spiciness. Very balanced, harmonious, zesty. Elegant. (Dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

????This needs a moment’s aeration for the fine stone fruit aromas to emerge. Stunning concentration and succulence, but also impeccable balance this is a great Mosel GG that will give so much pleasure in the years to come. In spite of everything there is a lovely delicacy at the finish. Drinkable from release, but best from 2024. (96) STUART PIGGOT, Jamessuckling.com

    Onannon Tuerong Robinson Chardonnay 2022

Plenty of struck match, ginger snap biscuits, cardamom, curry leaf, aniseed, so much spice, pink grapefruit and stonefruit, lots of flinty texture, a buttery white mint chocolate richness, and a very long grippy finish. This is so complex and engaging. Caramel with citrus bite. So lovely. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Fruit off the 35-year-old Robinson vineyard, hand picked and pressed to barrel, 30% new French oak plus a portion to 1000L stainless steel eggs; 50% undergoes mlf. Expect stone fruit and invigorating lemon flavours, lots of blossom and ginger spice, flint, and the funky sulphides entice immensely. The fuller-bodied palate gives way to creamed honey and lemon curd with the oak neatly integrated adding shape and spicy flavours, too. This turns out moreish and savoury. Another glass please. Onannon produced an impressive range of single-vineyard chardonnays in ‘22 and this, well, is stunning. Fruit is pressed to barrel and left on full solids with 100% mlf; aged nine months in used oak and unsulphured until bottling. The result is a moreish, tight and linear drink, yet layers of flavour within taking in lots of seductive sulphides, lemon and ginger cream, super-bright acidity, and it stays in the savoury spectrum with a hint of oatmeal biscuit. 24. Shaw & Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay 2022
Shaw & Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

An exceptional vintage for white wines. A lower pH, inherent freshness and phenolic bite, the artillery that delivers the impressive structural latticework necessary for further development. Really classy. Subdued aromas of cinnamon, sesame, quince, ginger and toasted hazelnut, with the barest hint of fruit. Better this way. The mid-weighted palate is pliant, nicely chewy and multilayered. The finish is exceptionally long, although I look forward to tasting again in another six or eight years after things unravel and meld. Stunning chardonnay, aligned with top-tier Chassagne and certainly among the finest tasted in recent memory (97) NED GOODWIN, Jamessuickling.com

A cascade of yellow grapefruit juice, juiced green apples and lime sorbet. Elderflower and Acacia blossoms. A hint of green coconut and lemongrass. It's full of citrus zest with an almond milk creaminess and roast raw macadamia on the finish. Nutmeg, tahini and baked anzac biscuits. A harmony of high tones and deep base notes that presents a birds eye view of Hills chardonnay. There is real power and weight here but with plenty of fruit tension and enough malo buffering. A joy to drink now and will cellar 5-8 years. I can see this served beside a river of raclette on hot bread. (96) SHANTEH WALE, Wine Pilot
