  1. Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 2015
Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 2015
It's hard to single out individual aromas from this complex fragrance. The nose invites to explore the many facets of fine fresh fruit, subtle nuances of spice and minerality and a gentle floral notion which all add to an extraordinary sensory experience. On the palate the Braune Kupp excels with a delightful interaction of vibrant acidity and delicious residual sweetness, putting grace and finesse above overwhelming opulence. An Auslese as racy as only the Saar can produce. 18.5 JANCIS ROBINSON MW

  2. Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett 2018
Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett 2018
Purple plum is laced with mint on the nose, and those two elements serve for a succulent and subtly cooling effect on the glossy, polished palate. Tangy plum skin, piquant plum pit and a hint of seedy red raspberry serve for invigoration critical to pushing back against unusually high residual sugar, but without diminishing the sense of richness that is engendered on first sip. “I believe some casks would have benefited from fermenting a bit further,” noted Müller, but the fermentations simply petered out. As a result – though, naturally, must weights in the low 90s are also contributory – nearly 60 grams of residual sugar remain in the finished wine. The impressively sustained finish is amply refreshing as well as transparent to smoky and stony nuances. DAVID SCHILDKNECHT, Vinous

  3. Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Auslese 2016 375mL
Lush and exotic in the nose, but oh so racy and brilliant on the palate, this is a stunning Auslese with a mineral finish that is filigree and intense. Best from 2018 through 2040. (95) STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

Made from grapes with 30/40% botrytised berries, the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling Auslese has a clear citrus colour and opens with a bright, fresh and concentrated bouquet of grapefruits, lemons and wet stones. Round and deliciously lush on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, highly elegant, piquant and salty Auslese with nice grip, grapefruit flavors on the aftertaste and pencil wood on the finish. Really stimulating. Very erotic and provided with great aging potential. (Roughly 100 grams of residual sugar.) (94) STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

  5. Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Krone Trocken 2020
Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Krone Trocken 2020
Anyone who doubts the greatness of the best wines from the 2020 vintage in Germany should taste this extremely complex and pristine dry riesling. Enormous minerality and structure, in spite of only being medium-bodied. So finely nuanced. Very long finish, in which slatey and chalky elements are beautifully interwoven with the white-peach and Amalfi-lemon aromas. Enormous aging potential. From organically grown grapes. JAMES SUCKLING, jamessuckling.com

...opens with an intense and complex, very elegant and chalky-fresh bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling grapes. Lush and silky as well as crystalline on the palate, this is a dense, very complex, finessed and grippy-mineral Krone with a firm, persistently salty and mineral finish. This is an impressive dry Riesling from predominantly 60- to 70+-year-old vines rooting deep in slate soils covering limestone sub-soils. Drink it from a Burgundy glass, in which the wine sits like an open book revealing all about Riesling, chalk and slate. A gorgeous wine with very fine tannins, lingering salinity and dense and juicy, lemony fruit. STEPHAN REINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

  6. Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2020
Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2020
There’s a bit of mountain stream in the fragrance of the Scharzhofberger Kabinett, but the primary aromas come from local orchards and citrus-fruit groves. Don’t expect an exuberance of sweet temptation on the palate, as zest and spice play at least as significant a role as residual sugar. But what makes the Scharzhofberger so unique is not the fruit, but the zest and spice it is delivered with. It’s still taut at this early stage, not so much a ‘come hither’ but a ‘come up and see me sometime’ Kabinett. MICHAEL SCHMIDT, Jancis Robinson

Very attractive nose of white and yellow peach, as well as some blossom. Ripe and well structured, but also clean and bright, without a jot too much weight or volume. This is a very classic dry Mosel. Long, complete finish with serious mineral complexity. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

    Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Spatlese 2021
The 2021 Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese is clear, precise and fresh on the tropical nose that reveals a stony/flinty spiciness intermingled with fine and candied ripe grapefruit aromas. Lush, refined and savory on the palate, this is a delicate but dense and finely concentrated, stimulatingly crispy Spätlese with a crystalline/saline finish. 7.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

This category of medium-sweet wines may not be in favor, but that doesn't take anything away from this riesling Spätlese masterpiece that swims against the current with great energy and determination. So much pink grapefruit, rose hip and pomegranate, with wild herbs leaping from the glass. Such brilliance at the very long finish. A minor miracle that the 2021 vintage made possible! From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap. STUART PIGGOT, jamessuckling.com

The nose is brilliantly clear and spicy, with fine raisin aromas intertwined with candied grapefruit and fully ripe mirabelles. 11. Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2021
Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2021

This is a blend from several western and central Rheingau sites, including Lorch, Eltville, Hattenheim and Kiedrich, most of which reside on loess, clay, slate and quartzite. The vines are between 15 and 20 years of age.
The 2021 Rheingau is a pure Riesling trocken with bright, ripe fruit and fine mineral stone as well as herbal aromas-pretty complex for a generic Rheingau Riesling from Kiedrich, Eltville, Erbach and Lorch. Lush and round but elegant, this is a fruity, juicy and very aromatic Riesling with mouth-filling texture and fine mineral grip on the finish. This is a serious wine with a good, structured and stimulatingly saline finish. 12% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. STEPHAN REINHARDT, vinous.com

Pale greenish gold colour. Light, very fresh and delicate nose. Lifted and ethereal even if without enormous complexity or extract. Just a little chalky-textured on the finish. The finish is pretty persistent. Impressive for an entry-level wine! And because of its light astringency at this point, I'd wait until next year before drinking this wine with a clear Eva Fricke signature. JULIA HARDING MW, jancisrobinson.com

Very crisp and bright finish. For a basic dry riesling this should age extremely well. Drink or hold. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

The 2021 Rheingau Riesling Trocken is clear and fresh but a little bit dull on the nose, as if there were a layer of paper between the fruit and nose. Round and lush on the palate, this is a quite rich and juicy estate Riesling with vibrant mineral acidity and a well-structured, persistent finish. Excellent. 12% stated alcohol. Screw cap. 13. Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2021
Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2021
Still youthful, but with plenty of ripe pear and white peach aromas. Sleek body with a compact structure and good concentration for this category, but still a little bit shy on the palate. Plenty of lemon zest and some baking spice at the long, firm finish. Two thirds of the cuvee was vinified in stainless steel and one third in large neutral wood. Drink or hold. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

From the higher vineyards in Kiedrich, especially Wasseros but also younger vines from Klosterberg, Turmberg and Gräfenberg, the 2021 Kiedricher Riesling Trocken offers a clear and coolish bouquet of white and yellow-fleshed fruits. Vinified two-thirds in stainless steel and one-third in large oak, this is a round and lush, pretty generous but vivacious and piquant Riesling with intense and elegant fruit, good density and a long, saline and finely grippy finish. Still young and edgy but promising. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in July 2022. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 2021
The 2021 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken is pure and coolish on the intense and concentrated nose. From phyllite slate soils, this is a full-bodied, intense and salty-piquant, highly stimulating Riesling with lots of energy, phenolic grip and mineral tension. With fine tannin structure, the massive and concentrated body and fruit lead to a long and intense, aromatic finish. Long but still shy and still somewhat coated. Bottled at the end of June. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

Extremely racy and extremely nuanced, this is a stunning example of the diamond-bright brilliance of the top 2021 vintage German dry rieslings! Crystalline clarity and purity. Only white fruits, but so many shades of pale. And the freshness at the finish reminds me of a shaded waterfall surrounded by ferns. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

The 2021 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese offers an intense, almost raisiny but also fresh and flinty bouquet with concentrated and candied fruit aromas. 17. Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG 2021
Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG 2021
Loosen's 2021 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben is remarkably refined on the nose that exhibits a delicate and flinty scented bright stone fruit and Riesling aroma. The palate is round and playful, almost silky and very elegant, leading to an intense and sustainably saline and tangy finish with fine grip and good tension. Surely one of the highlights in Erni Loosen's 2021 GG series. 12.5% alcohol. (94-96) STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, wineadvocate.com

The 2021er Erdener Treppchen Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Onnerts and Herzlay sectors (situated just above and next to the Prälat), and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, passion fruit, minerals, a hint of cardamom and other earthy spices, and a touch of whipped cream. The wine is still rather firm and racy on the palate but reveals already some of the greatness to come in the long and beautifully subtle and refined finish. The aftertaste is juicy, focused, elegant, and remarkably persistent. What a gorgeous dry Riesling in the making! 2028-2041. MOSEL FINE WINE

  18. Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021
Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021
The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous Kabinett that has to be aged for 10-15 years. Sourced from 80-year-old vines on pure gray slate. Bottled with a spectacular total acidity of 12 grams per liter, but you don't feel the grams of acidity; and believe me, it's serious but balanced by extract and almost 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine

This vineyard site is renowned for charming wines and this has some appley charm in the nose, but there’s also impressive depth and structure behind it. Stunning Amalfi-lemon freshness at the very long and vibrant finish, which is almost dry. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

  19. Christmann Aus Den Lagen Riesling GG 2021
Christmann Aus Den Lagen Riesling GG 2021
The 2021 Riesling Aus den Lagen is based on de-classified grand and premier cru barrels of the domaine. Very pure, fresh and stony but, most of all, reductive on the clear and serious nose, this is a medium-bodied, elegant, refined and persistently salty Riesling with a fine phenolic structure and elegant acidity STEPHAN REINHARDT

Jinkies! This is a different beast. They have replaced the estate with this, which is essentially a "Village" or maybe a "Premier Cru" from them. All classified sites now. I was really looking forward to sitting down and actually having a good look at this new wine from one of my fave Rizza producers. It did not disappoint. It carries all that rocky, pithy, just underripe stone fruit characters I love from the estate. The core is a little more lively than usual, they are always energetic and usually spine tingling in their attack, this is a bit more approachable and piquant. Long, and as is the case with so many of these 21s, the finish is all mineral and saline, so much so it pushes the fruit to the side. A final lick of not insubstantial extract really kicks the finish in to overdrive. Excellent. ROSCOE
