  1. Bilancia Tiratore Chardonnay 2019
    Bilancia Tiratore Chardonnay 2019

This was sourced from the whole property, picking the highlights from the site to make the wine.

Quite potent, full and waxy but with flinty elements in the mix and a good lick of river pebble through it all. Lemon on green apple, slate notes, brown spice and faint honey toast, plus savoury almond detail, with supple texture through the finish and yet a cool, and again, almondy finish. Generous, but balanced, proper flavourtown stuff. Very good. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

A very composed and complex chardonnay with fresh peach and grapefruit, as well as almond and hazelnut. Complex and exuberant style. The palate has a very plush, fleshy and cooly composed style with ripe peach and pear and a spicy, nutty finish. Drink now. Screw cap. NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

Rich and intense, but with a drive of acidity that is pure linear energy. Complex, and develops beautifully on opening – I’d surely decant this. Plenty of vanilla oak influence – strudel, nougat and baking spices. A deliciously silky mouthfeel – unctuous yet with a stony minerality underneath. A floral, spiciness develops in the mile-long, sweetening finish. 97pts. Would rank among the best of any New Zealand wines. (97) DAVID WALKER BELL, www.winefolio.com

  2. Maude Wines Sauvignon Blanc 2021
    Maude Wines Sauvignon Blanc 2021
Elegant, mineral centric with scents of fresh citrus and orchard fruits, herbs and hay, grapefruit and yellow flowers. Flavours on the palate are a mix of lemon and peach which transition into gooseberry and fresh herbs. Excellent texture and length with a fine mealy mouthfeel emphasising rocks and clay, fine fruit tannins and acidity. A delicious, salivating expression ready as an aperitif or with fresh shell fish. Lengthy finish, balanced and well made. Best drinking from 2022 through 2027. CAM DOUGLAS MS

  3. Te Mata Elston Chardonnay 2021
    Te Mata Elston Chardonnay 2021

A gorgeously composed chardonnay with a great degree of elegance, showing nectarine, rockmelon, lemon peel, oatmeal and roasted hazelnut characters on the nose, followed by a superbly structured palate that’s laced with ripe fruit intensity and stylish oak infusion. Bright acidity provides balance and frame, while richly textured mouthfeel leads to a persistent sensual finish. SAM KIM, Wine Orbit

Almond, cinnamon, nutmeg, green tobacco, a little gun smoke, nashi pear and nectarine. There’s some real lemonade flavour along with dried pear, a pleasing crunch and freshness to acidity, a friand and dried coconut richness, and a bright finish of excellent length. Very good Chardonnay. Ticks a lot of boxes, you might say. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  4. Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2022
    Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2022

Aromas and flavors of sliced apples, lemon curd and hints of stone. Oyster shell. Lime undertones. It’s medium-bodied. Firm and fine phenolics. Tension and focus. Impressive (95) JAMES SUCKLING

Such lovely stylish Chardonnay from this producer. White peach, almond meal, subtle floral and fennel/mint perfume, light cinnamon spice. It’s fluid and mellifluous, almond biscuit with some citrus and apple, fine powdery texture, flecked with pleasant green things, a slight oyster shell flavour and a cool and creamy finish of excellent length, with a subtle sappy aftertaste. Calm, composed and such a lovely thing to drink. Highly recommended GARY WALSH, Wine Front

This is Kumeu River's calling card. Made from a selection of six different sites of which they own four. Whole-bunch pressed and barrel-fermented (20% new). Vines planted from 1989 to 2005.
Some real richness on the nose. Then a green streak. Very fine texture! With Puligny savour and lift. Creamy yet fresh. Bullseye for the style. Good light grip on the end. Convincing. JANCIS ROBINSON MW

The ever-reliable Estate Chardonnay is a success again this year. Very pale in colour with a highly refined perfume of fresh pear, white peach and a little sandalwood. It has already opened up in the last six months and is showing a beautiful light smokiness from reduction. The palate has a superb sheen, with white fruits and flowers slick and refined, harmonious with a kick of savoury spices from well-judged use of oak. There is depth to the fruit, and a gentle creaminess that should build as this ages in bottle. Limes and a hint of charred wood drive to the finish, which is long and focused. This will drink well over the coming decade - I'd be tempted to decant now, or wait six months before approaching THOMAS PARKER MW

The 2022 Estate Chardonnay is nutty and svelte, with white peach, pastry, apricot kernel, brine and even a hint of malt biscuit through the finish. The wine has breadth and girth to it; it's not at all compact, but it's tight in texture. So, all things being equal, it's an exciting Chardonnay. This is from six different sites in the Kumeu area, with wine aging on lees in 20% new oak (just about all François Frères) for approximately 11 months. Lovely acid ERIN LARKIN, Wine Advocate

Millton Te Arai Chenin Blanc 2021
*BEST SELLER AT STAFF PICKS TASTING*

Millton Vineyards have been producing some of the world's finest chenin blancs, outside of the Loire Valley, for decades and it's that single variety that put them (and the region, Gisbourne), on the fine wine world map. Led by James and Annie Millton, sustainability and vineyard quality is the core to their success.
The Te Arai vineyard was planted 40 years ago and is named after the river the Millton vineyard is planted on. The chenin produced from this site is loaded with expressive varietal fruit of just ripe stone fruit and fresh crunchy green apple. The electric acidity is on par with the richness of the wine, catching you take another sip after another, and another. KAYLEEN REYNOLDS, PWS

  6. Kumeu River Village Pinot Gris 2023
Kumeu River Village Pinot Gris 2023

Made by Master of Wine Michael Brajkovich from sustainably grown Pinot Gris grapes that are hand-harvested and sorted in their Kumeu Vineyards then gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermented using local wild yeast with extended maturation on the yeast lees. This is always an absolute belter of a wine and 2023 has captured warm sunny fruit with zesty freshness making it just a little bit irrestable.

Lovely peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral perfume that gives it a little honsuclkle lift. he wine is brimming with energy that helps drive the perfectly sweet fruits. Love the balance here. This absolutely hits the spot.

  8. Dicey Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021
    Dicey Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021

This fragrant, full-bodied wine was matured for 11 months in oak barrels (16% new).  Offering strong, ripe stonefruit flavours, gently seasoned with oak, it is savoury, with very good depth, vigour, complexity and harmony, and a lengthy finish.  Best drinking 2024+ WINESTATE

Ripe, almost luscious chardonnay with peach, melon, nutty oak and yeast lees flavours supported by a backbone of ripe acidity. Mellow, accessible wine that is probably at, or close to, peak condition right now. BOB CAMPBELL, The Real Review

Aromas of garden herbs, grapefruit and oyster shell. Medium-bodied with very clear jasmine tea character coming through. Not your typical chardonnay, but tasty and well composed all the same. Sustainable. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

A delicious chardonnay with a sour lemon, cooked apple and grapefruit undertone. Medium body. Tangy and fruity. Drink now. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

Honestly, how does Michael do it? This is one of the best value and most consistent chardonnay releases anywhere in the world. In fact, we dare you to put forward another! It never fails to deliver a little bit of that chardonnay richness we like with beautifully handled winemaking, the perfect amount of oak and plenty of juicy deliciousness. The 2023 looks to be one of the better early releases we have seen too so get yourself a few extras before they run out.

  10. Dry River Craighall Riesling 2020
    Dry River Craighall Riesling 2020
The 2020 Craighall Vineyard Riesling is so taut and persistent! The wine feels quiet, but then it courses across the palate and soars long through the finish, showing the years of potential unfurling it can do, given the time to do so. There's talc and citrus pith, paraffin and white flowers, pepper and cracked fennel seeds. There is a fresh enoki mushroom and white miso character that feathers the edges of this wine. It's good, complex and built for time. Lovely textural shape, pliable. 11.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. ERIN LARKIN, The Wine Advocate

  11. Ata Rangi Masters Chardonnay 2021
    Ata Rangi Masters Chardonnay 2021

The 2021 Masters Chardonnay is spicy and concentrated on the nose, with lashings of fruit flavor in the mouth. This has a really savory edge to it that sits so gracefully within the fruit. You get salted peach, white tea/dandelion, cracked fennel seeds, a hint of cumin, white pepper, curls of saffron and loads of crushed shells. This is sleek and polished—it moves sort of like a spearhead through the air. There is full malolactic conversion here but within a tighter frame, and it is a kaleidoscopic, balanced experience. Feels good, smells good, tastes good. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. ERIN LARKIN, The Wine Advocate

Even more restrained than the 2020, this is very young, showing tightly wound fruit framed by carefully judged oak and a flinty reductive edge. The fruit is precise and detailed, poised between white peach, apple and lemon with a touch of cream, delicately floral perfume and fantastically driving acidity. This has a coiled, energetic core of citrus/apple fruit, coupled with a hint of phenolic bitterness to accentuate its chalky minerality. Crystalline and etched, this is very elegant, vibrant Chardonnay with a fine-grained, flowing texture. Focussed, tight and refreshingly pure on the finish, the quality and class is undeniable. Te Kairanga Pinot Gris 2022
The delicate light straw colour of our 2022 Pinot Gris transitions into elegant aromas of ripe nectarine, pear and blossom with notes of baking spice. The dry palate shows a refined texture with resonating fruit and impressive depth.

Partial barrel fermentation in seasoned French oak puncheons was used to add complexity and texture. Gentle handling ensures the expression of our special place.
