  1. Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux 2018
Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux 2018
The 2018 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux is ripe and already quite open on the remarkably fine and precise nose where delicate chalky notes intermix with yeasty aromas of ripe apples and even very fine flinty hints. On the palate, this is a sweet, lush, salty-piquant and refined but tightly woven Chenin with structure, remarkable finesse, tickling salinity and serious but fine tannins, as if it was a Pinot Noir. Filigreed and feminine on the tongue, the 2018 develops a long, tensioned, tightly woven and stimulatingly salty finish. Great class and aging potential. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

  2. Thierry Germain Roches Neuves Clos Romans Blanc Saumur 2019
Thierry Germain Roches Neuves Clos Romans Blanc Saumur 2019
The Chenin Blanc vines of Clos Romans are rooted in the walled enclave of a priory dating back to the 11th century. The soil consists of a 30cm layer of sandy clay over Senonian-era limestone bedrock called Pierres de Champigny, the same rock that was used to build Château Champigny. Planted atop a ridge in Parnay, just outside Saumur, the vine roots burrow down through the limestone, towards the famous troglodyte dwellings below. Germain acquired this historic site in 2007 and has been steadily replanting at a density of 12,000 vines per hectare. He practices massale selection, mixing plants to ensure he doesn't get a mono-dimensional profile of this terroir.

Undoubtedly the top cuvée at the domaine, arguably regardless of colour, this comes from a small clos planted close to the edge of the plateau, on Senonian limestone. The nose is expressive, pure and lightly salty and minerally, with smoky citrus and white peach fruits. The palate is no less harmonious than the nose, very composed, with a soft blanket of white peach and citrus fruits draped over a structure of pithy phenolic substance and fresh acidity. This is perfectly poised, showing great composition, total harmony, fresh, pure and precise. This has superb potential (and not for the first time). CHRIS KISSACK, The Wine Doctor

  3. Francois Chidaine Clos Habert 2019
    Francois Chidaine Clos Habert 2019
This Domaine has a number of cuvées that often fall into what would traditionally be called demi-sec territory. However, Chidaine prefers to call these wines tendre, or 'gently dry'. This three-hectare clos sits just above the Clos de Breuil, on a plateau where the silex (flint) gives way to broken chalk and clay.
From a soil composed of clay and coarse flint elements covering the subsoil made up of tuff, the 2019 Montlouis sur Loire Clos Habert opens with a very fine and delicate bouquet of finely concentrated yellow-fleshed fruit aromas along with herbal and flinty notes. Round and intense, with perfectly ripe fruit, fine tannins and delicate acidity, this is a sustainably intense and salty Chenin that is far too young to be served today but will age for some decades. 4. Brash Higgins CHN Chenin Blanc 2021
Brash Higgins CHN Chenin Blanc 2021

Chenin Blanc from McLaren Vale, fermented wild, matured in wood.

Colour and cloudiness, straw and nuts. This wine is wild with flavour. Citrus, saline, honey and handfuls of nuts. Lots of zip but lots of give/texture/flavour. Food-friendly and sit-and-ponder friendly. Dry and grippy on the finish, an attractive squeakiness there, and no shortage of length. It’s a ripper, really. It’s varietal but we are also in the presence of difference. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  5. Damien Pinon Tuffo Vouvray Sec 2021
Damien Pinon Tuffo Vouvray Sec 2021

    100% Chenin Blanc

Damien Pinon is the third generation of his family to naturally farm Chenin Blanc in the chalky soils of Vernou-sur-Brenne in the appellation of Vouvray. His vines are old, creating lush, expressive white wines.

The Tuffo cuvee is intensely aromatic and loaded with flavors of quince and apple. It has a wonderful complexity to it, hitting at first with burst of fresh fruit and finishing with a vibrant minerality. This beauty is incredibly food friendly, a great compliment for everything from roasted chicken, to fish in rich sauces to grilled sausages. PWS

  6. Cep by Cep Coteaux du Layon 2021
Cep by Cep Coteaux du Layon 2021
Cropped from Philippe Germain’s estate vineyards in the heart of the Layon Valley, at Rochefort-sur-Loire. Unusually for the Loire, the clay and schist-rich soils here are cut into an amphitheatre of terraces. Compared to much of the appellation (and especially the wines of the Layon Crus of Bonnezeaux, Chaume and Quarts de Chaume) this wine showcases the more delicate, almost Germanic style of Layon.

  7. Rocher des Violettes Les Borderies Demi Sec Montlouis 2020
Rocher des Violettes Les Borderies Demi Sec Montlouis 2020
From a single vineyard of 50+ year old vines on sand and silex (with pure limesonte just below).
Borderies is often the first vineyard to be harvested from slightly raisened fruit. Notes of jasmine, apple pie and crushed rocks on the nose lead into a subtle sweetness without heaviness. On the palate orchard fruits join in, signing off chalky minerality and a stream of quince-like phenolics which bring balance and punctuate the flow of sweetness. This is a delectable off-dry wine which could be served with cheese or richer seafood dishes. GABRIELLE POY

A little flint and white flowers with just picked anjou pear and a touch of pineapple and a little hint of bees wax. Fine and elegant with pure white fruits and a chalky mineral streak. Crystal clear and clean. Very pure. MYLES THOMSON, PWS

  8. Rocher des Violettes Le Grand Poirier Molleaux Montlouis 2020
Rocher des Violettes Le Grand Poirier Molleaux Montlouis 2020
From a 0.8 ha plot ‘Le Grand Poirier’ planted in 1950.  This has about 50% botrytis and aged in older barrels. RS 85 g/l
Smells so very strongly of fresh sage and honey and pineapple and medjool dates soaked in warm water. Lovely earthiness. Linden leaf. Saffron. An unusual nuttiness. Pineapple syrup and pressed sage on the palate. The sweetness fills the mouth but this is a wine that needs your silence, your listening, your waiting. If you give it time, sit back, find a nook in the garden or tucked into your old armchair, it's a wine that gives so much more than sweetness. It hands you memories of rain on earth, of bruised clover underneath the ripening grapes, of bees, blue skies, black skies, pink-blazed-morning skies, mist-draped dawns. You can taste yeast, old wood, black coffee, a slowly melting fingertip of dark chocolate on your tongue, ginger-biscuit crumbs. It's something, this wine. TAMLYN CURRIN, Jancis Robinson

  9. Rochers des Violettes Touche Mitaine 2021
Rochers des Violettes Touche Mitaine 2021

The Touche Mitaine parcel features Chenin Blanc vines aged 35 years, planted on clay and flint soils. It was vinified in used oak barrels of 228 litres, with an élevage lasting twelve months. Aromatically this is rich in powdered chalk, with layers of white peach and a fragrant, lifted, minty freshness. The palate matches this style, in a gently composed structure, polished and fresh, with the same minty, white peach substance. It is framed by firm acidity, which I find typifies the vintage. The alcohol is 12.8% CHRIS KISSACK

Pure and alluring, with apple and citrus cloaked in spices and salty brine. Remains racy through the smoky, vivid finish, thanks to mouthwatering acidity. Drink now through 2028. WINE SPECTATOR

Ah Tuffo! This wine seems to never fail us. Not only is it a wonderful example of classic Vouvray it always delivers that little x-factor and bit of pizzaz we like. That lovely clay/waxed citrus and quince fruit comes at you straight off-the-bat with that slaty chalky thin that chenin does in the Loire so well. Some apple and pear drop generosity on the palate is cut by crunchy acidity and a little hit of phenolic grip that stick all those beautiful flavours to your mouth. There is a little floral flourish in the middle and spritz of mixed sweet spice on the finish. A cracker!

  11. Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2023
    Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2023
Fruit for the Chenin Blanc comes from three organically farmed estate blocks on the Voyager Estate property. Voyager has some of the oldest Chenin Blanc in the Margaret River region, with some of the vines planted as far back as 1978. The vineyard soils are mostly gravelly loams with stony clay subsoils, providing excellent drainage and good moisture-holding capacity. The resulting fruit has exceptional balance.

Arnaud Lambert Les Parcelles Chenin Blanc VDF 2022
100% Chenin Blanc from a selection of small holdings just north of Breze in the neighbouring village of Saint Cyr en Bourg on sandy clay soil over limestone. Whole-bunch pressed, the free-run juice is fermented with natural yeast and no added SO2 in stainless steel tank. Matured on fine lees for about five months, with partial malolactic conversion. Attractive pure and primary chenin fruit vinified totally dry with ample body to the palate supported by good acidity giving a wine of surprising texture and immediate pleasure. From vines averaging 65 years old on clayey-sandy silt over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast after separating free run juices and matured for 12 months, half in older barriques (3-5 year-old) and half in foudres. Shows a very clear expression of fruit with barrel-ferment notes adding complexity to the fresh, long and concentrated finish. Un-fined, filtered at bottling. DAVID BURKITT, Vintage and Vine

  14. Francois Chidaine Vin de France Moelleux (Vouvray) 2018
Francois Chidaine Vin de France Moelleux (Vouvray) 2018
Again this moelleux cuvée has a very gentle residual sugar, with just 25 g/l. Unsurprisingly it feels very pure and fresh on the nose, with a very focused style, with scents of peach leaf and some lightly honeyed orchard fruit. The palate is pure, fresh and bright, mixing a pithy substance of both orchard and citrus fruits, fresh and pure, with a very fine acid backbone. This is quite striking in the finish, where it is long and cleansed with wonderful vibrancy. Very good potential here but it needs time.”
    CHRIS KISSACK, thewinedoctor.com

Chidaine does not release a Moelleux from his Vouvray vineyards every year—the balance has to be just so—and so you can be sure that when he does it is worth seeking out. It's drawn from the clay-limestone vineyards (of Le Bouchet, L’Espagnole, L’Homme, La Chatterie et al.) and made in the same fashion as Les Tuffeaux. As we have seen chez Huet, 2018 was a stunning year for sweeter styles of Chenin Blanc and here the song remains the same.

  15. Millton Te Arai Chenin Blanc 2021
Millton Te Arai Chenin Blanc 2021
*BEST SELLER AT STAFF PICKS TASTING*

Millton Vineyards have been producing some of the world's finest chenin blancs, outside of the Loire Valley, for decades and it's that single variety that put them (and the region, Gisbourne), on the fine wine world map. Led by James and Annie Millton, sustainability and vineyard quality is the core to their success.
The Te Arai vineyard was planted 40 years ago and is named after the river the Millton vineyard is planted on. The chenin produced from this site is loaded with expressive varietal fruit of just ripe stone fruit and fresh crunchy green apple. The electric acidity is on par with the richness of the wine, catching you take another sip after another, and another. KAYLEEN REYNOLDS, PWS

  16. Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec 2022
Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec 2022
The 2022 Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec is round and appealing, akin to a cozy night in with your slippers on; there's flesh and succulence, but it retains its shape and a sense of lightness on its feet. The ripeness of white stone fruit reminds me of nectarine and a heady floral character reminiscent of honeysuckle, even verging jasmine. And yet, it shows its pedigree in its fine texture and line. 17. Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2022
Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2022
The 2022 Le Mont Sec is a parcel of Chenin planted on clay with scattered flint, giving a certain tension to the style you certainly don't find in the come-hither Clos du Bourg. Its supple, concentrated core of fruit sits within a framework of structure. Both acidity and phenolics add tension and sinew. While some natural residual sugar remains (5.5g/L residual sugar), this rounds out the palate and brings balance - it's near-as-dammit dry in its impression and technically dry under Vouvray's rules. I'd like to see this with a little more bottle age as, compared with, say, Clos du Bourg, this isn't yet ready to approach but should blossom. REBECCA GIBB MW

  18. Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec 2022 375ml
Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec 2022 375ml
Domaine Huet reigns supreme in Vouvray. They make some of the world's most pure dry wines and piquant sweet styles from the racy and multifaceted Chenin Blanc. But you'll need patience, these powerhouses need around a decade to start revealing their inherent complexities.

Le Haut Lieu is the original vineyard,  purchased by founder Gaston Huet in 1928. It's based on heavy clay and chalk in the topsoil means these wines tend to be the most approachable in youth, though they age beautifully.

The 2022 Le Haut-Lieu Sec is a lithe, reductive style with floral character and talcum powder. Full of phenolic, lip-smacking texture woven through its core, lending a sense of satisfying grunt to this dry yet balanced style. Clarity, precision and harmony are keywords in this wine's execution. A little more fleeting on the finish than ideal. (5.5g/L) REBECCA GIBB MW, Vinous

  19. Schwarz Wine Co Chenin Blanc 2023
Schwarz Wine Co Chenin Blanc 2023

Schwarz Wine Co has for some time been at the forefront of contemporary Barossa winemaking, crafting site,s and vintage transparent wines of perfume, structure, and finely etched detail. The family vineyards provide the backbone of the label, though Jason Schwarz's relationships with talented growers are paramount to an enviable cache of old-vine fruit sources. Touch the fruit lightly, don't pick too late, keep oak use in check - the house style here is pure, vibrant and we love it!

Another little ripper from Schwarz & Co. here and you know that we are a bit partial to chenin here at Prince. Green apple, quince, white tree fruits, and touch of quartzy, salty spice emanate from the glass. This is summer in a bottle with a breezy, airy disposition and wonderful fresh cut. It's all about purity of fruit which zips along a long and zesty palate, almost too easy to drink with a lovely saline line that runs through from start to finish.
