Burgundy
The soils and vineyards of Burgundy have been very well defined thanks to the studious Monks a few hundred years ago - and the swathe of others who have picked up the baton since.
The Golden Slope (Cote D'or) is divided into two; the Cote du Nuit to the north and the Cote de Beaune to the south. Pinot noir dominates the Cote du Nuit as it loves the limestone nature of the soils and Chardonnay thrives in the heavier calcareous marl soils on the Cote de Beaune.
The essence of Burgundy comes down to the place where the vines are grown. The more definitive you can be (e.g. a single vineyard like Grand Cru or Premier Cru) then the higher the price you'll pay. A village wine, which will most likely be a blend of vineyards from within the village won't be as expensive as its origins are a little broader.
To the north, Chablis is an outpost. Lying closer to Champagne than the Cote d'Or, its marine fossil laden soils (Kimmeridgian clay) make scintillating renditions of chardonnay which age beautifully.
To the south the Cote Chalonnais, Maconnais and Beaujolais make wines that are easier on the pocket. There's some great value to be had here. A few different grapes are added to the mix including Gamay and Aligoté (as well as pinot noir and chardonnay).

Styles
The purity of chardonnay is on full display in a bottle of Chablis. Chiselled and tightly wound this is a crisp and salivating white. White Burgundy tends towards a riper heart but with spicy oak support.

Makes you smile this wine. There's a generosity of aromatic that leads you through baked pastry, fresh cut stonefruits and then an invogorating punch of crushed stone minerality puffs into view. It's kind of like a Champagne letting it's hair down on the palate as well, genrosity of well-defined fruit is edged with minerality and oyster shell while the fine bead cinches and tucks in the effusive edges. Its got enough in it for the serious-minded fizz drinker but is also playful and generous enough to keep you pulling it out of the fridge for pretth much any pcassion. MICHAEL MCNAMARAThis thing hits it out of the park in terms of delivering quality and value. It doesn’t hold back with packing in the flavour either. The fruit is present and accounted for, with a nice lick of minerality and some back end punch, but what is really striking is the yeasty, brioche, burnt toast mealy characters that immediately greet you as you take your first sniff. It has all the bells and whistles. As a Champagne nerd I love to see that in the wine, as distinctly different to my fetish for Grower Bubbles, give me some of that expressively yeasty goodness. Chapelle de Blagny Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane 2020This is an exquisite Pinot Noir with a name very few would ever have heard of unless, of course, they put two and two together with the Meursaults, and the like, above. This is, without doubt, the finest Blangy Rouge I have ever tasted. This was blamed on their setting, high on the Côte and yet this should have been a plus and not a minus point for these wines. Maybe they were just left behind in favour of more famous and familiar Volnays and Pommards. Well, this wine alone will set the record straight for this hamlet and for the future. As the world warms up, sites like this will no doubt be highly prized, and in 2020, the vintage played into its hands. This is one of the most expressive and downright delicious wines I have tasted in this entire campaign. It is deeply fruited, not heavy, but intense and completely refreshing and magical on the finish. I have awarded an extra half-point to this wine on this occasion because I want it to sit on a rare list in 2020. P & A Vin de France Chardonnay 2021The P & V wines are from our friend and Burgundy madman Nicolas Potel. These are the wines that epitomise the term vin-de-soif. These are absolutely gluggable, definitely chillable and straight-up delicious fair from the southern reached of France where Nicolas, via is network of winemaking legends sources fruit from top growers.
Nectarines, grapefruits and lemon curd hint towards ripeness on the nose. The palate is a delicious mix of citrus and crisp orchard fruits threaded with a minerally inflections and ginger spice. From two leui dits - Les Clous Perrons, les Magnys - in Meursault with time on lees in barrel to bring weight and texture with 12 months and 10% new oak. From vines 50+ and 25+ years old. Again those beautifully handled lees add something to both the feel of the wine and its aromatic profile. That is one of the hallmarks of these wines and its great to see at this level. Ample roundness and generosity, but there is zip and pep too. Salty minerality here! Very good Bourgogne. Better than its classification.

In the mouth a modest cushion too - but there's also some riper fruit depth and a silky texture - a super Bourgogne - with an almost sparkly, mineral finishing style - faintly tannic at the end. Xavier Monnot Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru 2021Vines between Chartron and Pernot above the trees, bought by Xavier's grandmother in 1978 after already working the parcel for 10 years.
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a classy bouquet, introverted initially then opening with wet limestone, orchard fruit and a touch of lemon verbena. The palate is very well balanced with good concentration, fine acidity and a tensile finish. Frankly, this is better than a lot of grander names and comes recommended. NEAL MARTIN

The walls of the Clos make this an early ripener. Vines planted in 1997 but some which are on 161/49 need to be pulled out. Lemon and lime in colour. An attractive fresh nose, with a little bit of lime blossom. The palate has a delicious energy underpinned by the minerality of this site, it is generous but well balanced. Lovely wine. Goisot Blanc Saint-Bris La Ronce Blanc 2020FIVE STARS - A pale colour with some lime tints. Fresh apricot and pineapple but not disagreeably tropical. If you could have pineapple blossom it would be that. The most powerful fruit of all on the palate and with that delicious light bitterness at the back that assures longevity. FIVE STARS - François is fortunate enough to have 5.85 hectares of Puligny-Montrachet from six plots. He is planning some parcellaire cuvées in 2023. We are back to finesse with this wine. The 2022 Puligny is beautifully aromatic, with all the floral character one could hope for. This has a brilliantly light touch despite the energy and the intensity. Fruit aromas range from citrus peel to apricot with accents of butter and spice. The texture is rich, but the body is balanced by the racy acidity of the 2021 vintage. This wine will drink well on release but is undoubtedly suited to at least mid-term cellaring. The village-level vines of this lieu-dit are at the base of the slope just outside the town of Meursault; the domaine farms 1.5 hectares here to produce this delicious certified-organic wine. The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons, which was not affected by frost and consequently bestowed a generous 50hl/ha, has a minerally bouquet that unfolds in the glass, with touches of wet limestone and struck match. Genot Boulanger Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes 2021This nose is narrower than the Levrons – but deep and again with that faint noble reduction the top notes more spiced. More incisive to start – a bit more energy on dsplay here too – a more herbed complexity that mixes with heavier citrus notes – impressive and also for keeping a little while, also a little tannin on the end of my tongue! The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes has a little more delineation and vigour on the nose compared to the Levrons with menthol-tinged citrus fruit, lime and crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with a little more "bite" than the Levrons, modest depth with a nicely detailed, Meursault-like finish. Fine. NEAL MARTIN

Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Chardonnay Cuvee Reserve 2022The entry-level white Burgundy comes from old-vine parcels in the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. The vines have an average age of 48 years and, as with all the wines, harvesting is done by hand. For this cuvée, about half is vinified in stainless steel and half in used oak barrels. Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022From the Montagne de Cras, plot in Nantoux, the soils here is very varied, stony, but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days.
In the winery, the fruit is whole bunch pressed into part barrel (25% new) and part small stainless barrels and left to sit on lees for up to 12 months.
Rich and generous citrus fruits, honey and subtle floral notes, rounded out by a nice integration of oak and balanced acidity.

There is excellent mid-palate density to the caressing and delicious middleweight flavors that exhibit a subtle bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the firm, balanced and youthfully austere finale.
