USA New Arrivals Tasting Sydney 2023

American wine is an exciting story, and it is getting even better every vintage. JAMES SUCKLING

It is probably generally not appreciated that the US regularly makes more wine than any country other than France, Italy, and Spain.

As consumer consciousness matures in the US, the industry continues to evolve at a rapid rate. The days of the over-hyped wine labels, Parker Point winners with super-charged fruit and oak bombs are ending giving way to wines of real finesse, complexity, and depth. The paradigm is shifting for quality-conscious producers discovering, re-discovering, and coming to an understanding of the nuance and diversity of the varying 'terroirs' they work.

The future of the American wine industry is certainly bright, and we are only beginning to see the potential from what is ultimately one of the world's most diverse, wine-producing countries. While we have been lucky enough to re-introduce to the country some of Oregon's most important and highly sought-after estates we are joined by a number of other savvy importers who have also been on hot pursuit of some the country's most fabled and cherished producers.

This is a phenomenal line-up of new arrivals from Oregon along with some classic drops from across California amongst a bevy of fantastic arrivals to Australia. It's genuinely exciting to see so much great wine finally making its way to our shores and this will be a celebration of all that makes the USA great.

  1. Elk Cove Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2021
Elk Cove Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2021

the dark ruby 2021 Pinot Noir Estate is ripe and sunny with aromas of blackberry, scorched earth, and violets. Full-bodied, with a silky texture, a stony mouthfeel, and notes of toasted cedar on the finish, it's supple and attractive now and will drink well over the next 3-5 years. JEB DUNNUCK

The 2021 Pinot Noir, made with about 15% whole clusters, has a medium ruby-purple color and pure scents of cranberries, baked rhubarb and allspice with wafts of forest floor, charcuterie and orange zest. The palate is light on its feet with generous, floral fruit, refreshing acidity and a soft, approachable frame, and it has a satisfying, spicy finish. ERIN BROOKES, Wine Advocate

Aromas of red plums, raspberries, oranges and pink peppercorns. Fresh, crunchy and delicious, with a medium body and silky, fine tannins. Crushed stone minerality at the end JAMES SUCKLING

  4. Matthiasson Napa Valley Linda Vista Chardonnay 2021
Matthiasson Napa Valley Linda Vista Chardonnay 2021

Inviting aromas of lemon curd, wet stone and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied with lively acidity. So fresh and clear on the palate. Refreshing and delicious. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Golden Delicious apples, yellow peaches, musk melon, and honey greet the nose and persist through to the palate. Medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality.

For complexity, completeness, and balance, we achieve a diversity of ripeness by using the traditional method of harvesting the fruit a number of different times during the ripening period. The earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness. We whole-cluster press all of the grapes, then ferment and age the wine in seasoned French oak barrels, with only native yeast. No battonage (lees stirring) or racking. We allow two-fifths of the barrels to go through malo-lactic fermentation. MATTHIASSON

  7. Evening Land Seven Springs Chardonnay 2021
Evening Land Seven Springs Chardonnay 2021

From Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman of Sandhi fame. Fruit for this estate wine comes from Burgundian clones rooted into a rockier section of Seven Springs’ mid-slope, which they believe plays into the texture and final flavor profile of the wine. Whole cluster pressed indigenous yeast fermentation in once-used puncheons and barriques. Aged 6 months in neutral barrique and 1 month in stainless steel. Cold stabilized and lightly fined with bentonite clay before bottling
