Corton hillside. The older vines on these parcels were planted between 1926 and 1960. The estate's holdings are located on a clayey limestone soil, overlying dark brown marls.This wine offers a deep ruby red colour. Its bouquet permeates fresh berries (blackcurrant and raspberry). The wine has a supple, elegant and delicate structure, a bouquet of flowers. The finishing taste lends a truly remarkable finesse and elegance. HALLE AUX VINS

Meaning ‘under the well’ the vines were planted from 1951 to 1982, an average age of 55 years old across the parcels. Sous Le Puits is made from 5 different parcels spanning 1.8 hectares that Domaine Larue own in this 1er Cru which borders the Meursault appellation in the North of the Puligny AOP, right at the top of the hill of Puligny-Montrachet, East facing. The site has deeper clay-limestone soil than the mid slope Cru’s, plus it’s is a little colder due to it’s slope position. FRANC ABOUT WINE

Christmann's 2020 Spätburgunder Aus den Lagen opens with a pure, fresh, earthy and spicy/toasty bouquet of dark cherries and black berries. Silky, lush and saline on the palate, this is a pure, very elegant and charmingly fruity Pinot with fine tannins, good salinity and intensity. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. ; Hua Nui, Winery and Pencarrow. The fruit is a blend of Clones 667, 777, 115, 10/5, MV6 and Abel. All handpicked with 5% whole cluster. A period of cold soak followed by wild fermentations and gentle pumpovers and plunging. The wine is pressed to French Oak barrels and left to mature for a period of 10 months during which time it undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften the wine and add complexity.

The insider's choice among Rapet's reds is the 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless wine that's layered and velvety, evocative of sweet red berries, baking spices, rose petals and orange zest. WILLIAM KELLEY

Extra layers of ripe dark-cherry fruit compared with the elegant Bourgogne Rouge. Good density here with crispness allied with a purity of black fruit. Soft and enveloping light oak provides extra support. Really very fine and punches above its weight. ANDY HOWARD MW, jancisrobinson.com

An overtly floral, airy and cool nose offers up a variety of dark berries, herbal tea, earth and a hint of kirsch, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The delicious tension-filled and beautifully textured flavors exude more evident minerality on the sappy, youthfully austere and equally serious finale. This also needs to develop better depth but the Rapet Ile virtually always ages well. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND

Beyond the hill of Corton – almost Hautes Côtes.
Great example of Bourgogne from this Pernand domaine. Lovely crisp, bright, crunchy fruit. Great purity but there is also a freshness and acidity which makes you want to drink more. Not at all hefty but lifted, delicate and showing so much finesse. Well worth considering this for your ‘drinking’ Pinot. GREAT VALUE, ANDY HOWARD MW, jancisrobinson.com

Ultra-fresh aromas of red pinot fruit, spice and more discreet earth nuances lead to equally delicious and more finely textured middleweight flavors that possess notably better volume on the better balanced and sneaky long finish. This is quite good for what it is and worth checking out. BURGHOUND

Seductive notes of spiced apples, preserved lemons, brioche and fennel excite from the first whiff, leading into a beautifully ripe core that takes centre stage. Flavours of Golden Delicious apples allude to its ripeness while a crunch and minerally vigour is pervading the palate and reining it in. There's flesh coupled with refinement and tension. Ooh, that’s a waft of inviting aroma – lots of white flowers too. Mouth-filling with lots of energy, juicy wine and completely delicious – full but with plenty of energy to balance. BILL NANSON

Exuberantly fresh and bright aromas of green apple, citrus, mineral reduction and a deft application of wood give way to bigger and richer medium weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the impressively persistent, agreeably dry and chiseled finale that displays focused power. Some patience is advised as this is sufficiently tightly wound at present to need it. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND

A completely different nose; silkier, almost cushioned, with yellow fruit and flowers. More direct and intense, this a wine with a certain tension before a finishing burst of flavour that brings much interest. BILL NANSON

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Le Clos du Village is ample and fleshy, bursting with aromas of peach, clear honey, buttery pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and pure, it's a pretty, charming white. WILLIAM KELLEY

The walls of the Clos make this an early ripener. Vines planted in 1997 but some which are on 161/49 need to be pulled out. Lemon and lime in colour. An attractive fresh nose, with a little bit of lime blossom. The palate has a delicious energy underpinned by the minerality of this site, it is generous but well balanced. Lovely wine. Plenty of struck match, ginger snap biscuits, cardamom, curry leaf, aniseed, so much spice, pink grapefruit and stonefruit, lots of flinty texture, a buttery white mint chocolate richness, and a very long grippy finish. This is so complex and engaging. Caramel with citrus bite. So lovely. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Fruit off the 35-year-old Robinson vineyard, hand picked and pressed to barrel, 30% new French oak plus a portion to 1000L stainless steel eggs; 50% undergoes mlf. Expect stone fruit and invigorating lemon flavours, lots of blossom and ginger spice, flint, and the funky sulphides entice immensely. The fuller-bodied palate gives way to creamed honey and lemon curd with the oak neatly integrated adding shape and spicy flavours, too. This turns out moreish and savoury. Another glass please. So pretty and appealing thanks to its up-front red cherries and spice flavours. At first quite fruit-sweet, then other elements come into play: tangy, tart, pomegranate-like acidity, a touch of menthol. The oak is oh-so-subtle, adding some background nuances to the lighter-framed palate with lacy tannins. This is lovely. All fruit is destemmed, cold soaked for seven days in a carbonic environment and spends six weeks on skins, then pressed straight to oak, 15% new. (95) JANE FAULKNER Wine Companion

Red fruit, pimento, cinnamon and spice, poached strawberry and rhubarb, a little cedar oak. It’s all red fruit, some pomegranate and tamarind tang, light dusty and peppery tannin, a quiet sappy succulence, with a bright and zesty finish of excellent length. Very good. Homage faces north-east, is the smallest of the vineyards, was planted from cuttings taken from Main Ridge Estate, and – important on the Peninsula – is the most sheltered of the vineyards.

This release is better than excellent. It’s elegant and fine-boned but it has genuine power, most of the latter formed, assembled and employed through the back half of the palate and out through the finish. It’s a Pinot Noir for lovers of Pinot Noir. It’s modestly sweet-sour but it’s silken and cohesive, its black cherry, meat, toast and floral elements singing as one. This is my favourite of the 2022 Hurley Vineyards pinots; they’re all good, but this for me is the most complete. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Lodestone is north-facing and the warmest of the three sites. But it’s planted to the Burgundian clones 114, 115 and 777 (along with some MV6), and the soils the vines are planted in are rockier. (The Hurley Vineyard is currently for sale, if anyone is interested.)

This is an excellent release. Taut, perfumed, meaty in essence but pretty at the same time. Floral. Its tastes of game, black cherries and strawberries-dipped-in-chocolate, the latter of which makes it sound ‘sweet’ but it’s not; there are so many earth/spice/smoke/meat characters here that it largely comes across as savoury. This will age but I’d personally drink it now; there’s already so much going on. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

The 2021 Masters Chardonnay is spicy and concentrated on the nose, with lashings of fruit flavor in the mouth. This has a really savory edge to it that sits so gracefully within the fruit. You get salted peach, white tea/dandelion, cracked fennel seeds, a hint of cumin, white pepper, curls of saffron and loads of crushed shells. This is sleek and polished—it moves sort of like a spearhead through the air. There is full malolactic conversion here but within a tighter frame, and it is a kaleidoscopic, balanced experience. Even more restrained than the 2020, this is very young, showing tightly wound fruit framed by carefully judged oak and a flinty reductive edge. The fruit is precise and detailed, poised between white peach, apple and lemon with a touch of cream, delicately floral perfume and fantastically driving acidity. This has a coiled, energetic core of citrus/apple fruit, coupled with a hint of phenolic bitterness to accentuate its chalky minerality. Crystalline and etched, this is very elegant, vibrant Chardonnay with a fine-grained, flowing texture. Focussed, tight and refreshingly pure on the finish, the quality and class is undeniable. The 2021 Pinot Noir is svelte and balanced; it's really settled into itself now at two years post-harvest. There's a nice, fleshy green parsley note on the nose. The fruit tastes ripe and fleshy and feels it in the mouth too. Nice mineral acidity shapes the wine and keeps it alive in the mouth. This is super pleasurable drinking here. There are pomegranate pearls and pink peppercorns. There is energy here. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

This is composed of 61.5% Te Muna Road Vineyard, with the balance from in town. It was plunged once daily and spent 20 days on the skins. Aging was in 22% new oak for 11 months, with a further nine months in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. ERIN LARKIN, The Wine Advocate

Most if not all escarpment Pinots Noir need to be given the time to develop, build complexities and show their true potential. This was the legacy that Larry Mackenna and his team set, today’s team led by Tim Bourne is continuing this legacy easily showcased in this wine. Aromas and flavours are rich and taut, complex and detailed. A wine that opens up to reveal its potential after 3 days open. Dark berries and plum, spices and dried herb, savoury and complex, mushroom and smoke. Lengthy, dry and complex. Best drinking from 2026 through 2036. CAM DOUGLAS MW

The 2021 Pahi Pinot Noir has a gorgeous nose that's totally expressive and pure in its outlay of aroma, with Pink Lady apples, pomegranate pearls, layers of red cherry, white strawberry, star anise, a hint of arnica/mint and a ripple of sumac and blood orange/ginger spice through the finish. Superb, gorgeous with lovely energy. The nose is laced with freshly turned red earth, which is crazy because there is no "freshly turned red earth" in the vineyard, yet it is ferruginous, iodine-y, etc., which carries through all the 2021 single-vineyard Pinots. Tannins are silky. With 58% whole bunch, there's "big bunch energy," joked winemaker Tim Bourne. I agree.13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Pahi tends to have a lifted perfume—"'Te Muna Road perfume' we call that," says Tim. Grapes were picked on April 3 and spent 25 days on skins. Clone 5 and Abel were used. Aging was in 25% new oak for 20 months, racked once, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. (95) ERIN LARKIN,. The Wine Advocate

An enticing fragrance of fresh dark cherries and dried herbs, plum and sweet wood with a light smoke touch. There’s a gentle perfume and floral frame. On the palate firm touch with a core of ripe dark berried fruits for contrast. There’s some subtle power with tannins and acidity framing the wine nicely and a core of fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet. Firm and dry, lengthy and well made, I feel this wine needs some cellar time to complete its harmony. Best drinking from 2025 through 2032+. CAM DOUGLAS MW

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vergelesses 1er Cru has a notably perfumed bouquet with redcurrant and raspberry fruit, wild heather and touches of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious, with a fine bead of acidity and a degree of precision on the finish that does the appellation proud. Quality winemaking here—this comes highly recommended. NEAL MARTIN

More depth – ooh this is good! I love this direct personality and the architectural shape – a modest strictness keeps me in control – then a broad delicious and lasting width of flavour – simply excellent wine. BILL NANSON

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fourneaux is pretty and charming, offering up notes of raspberries, plums, spices and orange zest. Medium-bodied, supple and fine-boned, it won't require much cellaring. WILLIAM KELLEY

A notably earthier nose combines notes of red currant, dark pinot and a whiff of the sauvage. There is markedly better volume to the delicious and more complex medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic and more structured finale. This should mature quickly though and 5 to 8 years should see this at its best. BURGHOUND

From the part of this climat classified in premier cru, where the vines are also older and the soils shallower, Rapet's 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fourneaux exhibits aromas of dark berries, cherries, orange zest and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety palate that's suave and lively. The same name but not the same soil, very stony here. A fine fresh mid purple. Altogether finer than the village wine with a racy quality through the middle of the raspberry fruit, the limestone seems much closer here. Medium length in the classy finish. JASPER MORRIS MW

The 2021 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills has a medium ruby color and pretty scents of cinnamon stick, aniseed, iron, underbrush and charcuterie with a core of red cherries and cranberries. Medium-bodied yet very concentrated, it has a powdery frame, sparks of refreshing acidity and a very long, graphite-driven finish. Precise and detailed, it deserves to spend another 2-3 years in bottle. (96) ERIN BROOKS, Wine Advocate

STAFF PICKS 2024 - ALEX WILCOX

The Prince Wine Store team uncovered the Lilbert on a recent trip to France and we were very lucky to be given a small allocation for Australia. This tiny producer (3.5 hectare) is a great addition to our Champagne portfolio. For me this is what champagne is all about - pure fine and elegant with an underlying power - this is truly an anywhere, anytime great bottle of Champagne. If you haven't tried it, you really should.

Bertrand Lilbert's crafts his wines from 100% Chardonnay grown in the Northern part of the Cote du Blanc, the NV is a blend of 50% reserve wine and 50% from 2016 for this most recent bottling. As small grower Champagne prices continue to skyrocket this cuvee is great value for money and will stand up against many bigger name Blanc du Blanc. Elsewhere, these wines have a cult like following, something we hope to help build here. This will be a feature of my Christmas Day in Tamworth. ALEX WILCOX


Lilbert-Fils is a small, slightly under-the-radar grower in Cramant with a loyal following, and it's easy to see why. With 50% of the blend for the first wine of the house coming from a perpetual reserve of Cramant Chardonnay started in the 1990s by Bertrand Lilbert's father, this is an entry level that is anything but simple and youthful. The style is rather floral, with apricot and jasmine notes floating over a real hit of savour from the reserve and a bone dry, mineral presence. It's singular, yet harmonious; a blanc de blancs that takes care of the simple pleasures, yet hides rather a lot under the bonnet. TOM HEWSON, decanter.com

As is consistently the case with this wine, the nose is airy and almost delicate with its softly yeasty aromas of Granny Smith apples, lemon-lime and a floral top note. The ultra-fine if firm mousse contributes to the impression of refinement on the equally pure middle weight flavors that terminate in a clean, dry and delicious but not really austere finale…BURGHOUND
