Lilbert Fils Extra BrutSTAFF PICKS 2024 - ALEX WILCOX
The Prince Wine Store team uncovered the Lilbert on a recent trip to France and we were very lucky to be given a small allocation for Australia. This tiny producer (3.5 hectare) is a great addition to our Champagne portfolio. For me this is what champagne is all about - pure fine and elegant with an underlying power - this is truly an anywhere, anytime great bottle of Champagne. If you haven't tried it, you really should.
Bertrand Lilbert's crafts his wines from 100% Chardonnay grown in the Northern part of the Cote du Blanc, the NV is a blend of 50% reserve wine and 50% from 2016 for this most recent bottling. As small grower Champagne prices continue to skyrocket this cuvee is great value for money and will stand up against many bigger name Blanc du Blanc. Elsewhere, these wines have a cult like following, something we hope to help build here. This will be a feature of my Christmas Day in Tamworth. ALEX WILCOX
Lilbert-Fils is a small, slightly under-the-radar grower in Cramant with a loyal following, and it's easy to see why. With 50% of the blend for the first wine of the house coming from a perpetual reserve of Cramant Chardonnay started in the 1990s by Bertrand Lilbert's father, this is an entry level that is anything but simple and youthful. The style is rather floral, with apricot and jasmine notes floating over a real hit of savour from the reserve and a bone dry, mineral presence. Jaeger Defaix Rully Blanc 1er Cru Le Cloux 2022Here the wood treatment is more subtle on the very pretty and more floral-suffused nose of citrus, anise and white orchard fruit scents. Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2020The 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's flagship, is very fine. Dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange, spice and lavender are nicely amplified. The 2020 is gracious and elegant, but its youthful Nebbiolo tannins will require some time to soften. The 2020 is another wine that captures my keen interests with its sublime balance. A ripe ruby color, the 2020 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is incredible on the nose. Initially lightly smoky on opening, it needs a little time to reveal notes of candied roses, wild raspberries, tea leaf, and sweet sage. Medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, a balanced, compact nature, and a velvety texture, it is nicely concentrated, yet with a weightless feel. This is one of the most complete wines I've tasted from Vjara to date. It has depth, but with a defined feel, and is long on the palate, with an exceptional finish. Cristom Eola Amity Hills Chardonnay 2022From eight different sites in the Eola Amity Hills, winemaker Daniel Estrin learned how to make Chardonnay from Litorrai's Ted Lemon. Paul Gerrie makes up the bulk of this wine with Eileen and Louise. 100% barrel fermented Estrin uses a tactile approach to the lees inclusion in this wine. At the entry-level, this wine is still over-vintaged, which builds tension in the wine. Notes of tarragon and chipped flint frame the smoky grilled lemon aromatics. The 2022 Chardonnay Eola-Amity Hills is a total pleasure on the nose, wafting up with notions of sweet spice, chamomile and ginger-tinged yellow apples. Round and supple, this possesses a core of juicy acidity that enlivens it's tart orchard fruits as a salty sensation forms toward the close. It tapers off with tension, cleansing and fresh, leaving a mineral twang and hints of sour citrus. Beautiful. ERIC GUIDO

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2019The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. Very aromatic with hibiscus, crab apple, orange blossom, and ripe strawberry on the nose. Full-bodied, very layered and powerful, yet it remains very fine textured with an intense finish. A blend of several small parcels of vines from several communes, Le Vigne is Sandrone's ode to the classic, Barolo-wide blend that was once the norm. All the sites that contribute to Le Vigne are markedly different in terms of altitude, soil and exposure, and together provide a broad overview of Barolo in a given year. 2019 is the first year to include Nebbiolo from Sandrone's new holding in Le Coste di Monforte in Monforte d'Alba, a site Sandrone had been farming since 2000. So, from this vintage, Le Vigne includes fruit from Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba. Regarding the winemaking, wild yeast fermentation begins in tank before the malolactic conversion and aging in mostly used, 500-litre French oak casks. Approximately 20-30% of the fruit is fermented as bunches, with the destemmed portion having a very high percentage of whole berries. Time on skins varied from ten days to up to one month. Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate 2020The 2020 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is gorgeous. Aromatically captivating and nuanced, the 2020 impresses right out of the gate. All the classic Ginestra signatures are present. Today the tannins are pretty imposing in the positive sense, as they are present, but also impeccably balanced within the wine's frame. Elio Grasso Barolo Vigna Gavarini Chiniera 2020The 2020 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a heady, almost exotic wine. Harvest took place on October 17, very late for the year. Hard candy, kirsch, menthol, dried rose petal, mint and blood orange infuse the 2020 with striking depth. The tannins, often incisive here, are remarkably polished. A wine of beautiful nuance and persistence, the 2020 Gavarini is not the most obvious wine in this range, but it could very well be the classiest. Don't miss it! Elio Grasso Barolo Runcot Riserva 2016The 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is quite possibly the single greatest wine I have tasted in more than twenty years I have been coming here, with the possible exception of the 1989s and 1990s. Deep and powerful, but not at all heavy, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark cherry/plum fruit, menthol, lavender, licorice and mocha saturate the palate in a Barolo of extraordinary richness and intensity. Francois Carillon Puligny Montrachet 2022OUTSTANDING - Cool but ripe aromas include those of mostly apple and acacia blossom along with an interesting hint of tangerine peel. There is solid size, weight and mid-palate density to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that easily buffers the moderately firm acid spine shaping the youthfully austere yet sneaky long finale. FIVE STARS - François is fortunate enough to have 5.85 hectares of Puligny-Montrachet from six plots. He is planning some parcellaire cuvées in 2023. We are back to finesse with this wine. The 2022 Puligny is beautifully aromatic, with all the floral character one could hope for. This has a brilliantly light touch despite the energy and the intensity. OUTSTANDING - A more elegant, airier and more floral-suffused nose combines notes of spiced pear and enough Chablis elements to be more than just interesting. The refined, delicious and caressing, if not quite as concentrated, middle weight flavors possess very good punch on the firm, balanced, moderately dry bitter lemon-inflected finish. The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with touches of frangipane infusing the citrus fruit and hints of dried orange peel coming through with time. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy-textured opening. Good delineation, quite saline, with a twist of sour lemon dovetailing into a slight nutty/smoky note on the finish. Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda 2017The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is flat out stunning. All the purest essence of Rionda comes through in a captivating Barolo that dazzles. Sweet red cherry fruit, kirsch, rose petal, licorice and blood orange are some of the many aromas and flavors that lift from the glass. Exotic and racy, the 2017 is a flat-out stunner. Now, for the million dollar question. Is it better than the 2016? Right now, I give an edge to the 2017 for its greater finesse and total sense of exotic beauty. But time will be the judge. Fruit aromas range from citrus peel to apricot with accents of butter and spice. The texture is rich, but the body is balanced by the racy acidity of the 2021 vintage. This wine will drink well on release but is undoubtedly suited to at least mid-term cellaring. The village-level vines of this lieu-dit are at the base of the slope just outside the town of Meursault; the domaine farms 1.5 hectares here to produce this delicious certified-organic wine. The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes has a little more delineation and vigour on the nose compared to the Levrons with menthol-tinged citrus fruit, lime and crushed stone. Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022From the Montagne de Cras, plot in Nantoux, the soils here is very varied, stony, but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days.
In the winery, the fruit is whole bunch pressed into part barrel (25% new) and part small stainless barrels and left to sit on lees for up to 12 months.
Rich and generous citrus fruits, honey and subtle floral notes, rounded out by a nice integration of oak and balanced acidity.
