Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022From the Montagne de Cras, plot in Nantoux, the soils here is very varied, stony, but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days.
In the winery, the fruit is whole bunch pressed into part barrel (25% new) and part small stainless barrels and left to sit on lees for up to 12 months.
Rich and generous citrus fruits, honey and subtle floral notes, rounded out by a nice integration of oak and balanced acidity.

Eleni et Edouard Vocoret Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot 2022The 2022 Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot underwent partial tressage in the vineyard this year, so the Vocorets could compare. They found the fruit ripened earlier with more intense aromas. These will be bottled separately. It has a lovely peachy, nectarine-tinged bouquet that blossoms in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with touches of grapefruit and white peach. It is very elegant and pure, with a touch of spice towards the finish. One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. William Fevre Chablis 2022FIVE STARS - To bottle in November. The average age is 40 year old vines, and 10% in wood. Excellent long finish. Sources are Chablis and Chichée for half and the rest in Viviers, 50 year old vines. Well drained steep slope which though south facing is at altitude and stays fresh. A fresh lemon yellow. The nose is a little more subdued than the Petit Chablis but more classical. This too has the attractive saline bitterness of extreme youth, but the fruit builds beautifully on the palate. This makes it an outlier among Rüdesheimer Grosse Lagen. The vines are 50 and 20 years old. Just a hint of honey plays on the nose, with a slight note of shriveled, dry fruit that was common in 2020. The palate is rounded and really concentrated, with insistent, bright, dried lemon notes and citrus pith. Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. The high-risk part comes after the canes that feed the fruit are cut – causing that fruit to concentrate – effectively using the vine as a drying rack for the fruit. Much depends on the weather conditions that follow – sunny and dry conditions work wonders; wet, cold or windy conditions all bring challenges. Stephanie uses intuition to decide the day to harvest.

Domaine Barmes Buecher Sylvaner Vielle Vignes Rosenberg 2021The 2021 Sylvaner Rosenberg is made from old vines, planted in 1969/1970, so just over 50 years old. The nose has a faint hint of melted butter and hazelnut. The small harvest meant that it needed to go into used barrique, because there was not enough to fill a foudre. The result is very creamy and smooth, on a slender body, with much lemon freshness. While svelte, this is generous and gorgeously smooth. They are fruit-driven, aromatic, dry wines that give the best of themselves within the first five to seven years, if you wish to retain their primary fruit-driven personality. The screw cap closure enhances this profile and helps the wines keep both freshness and liveliness far longer. They generally come from light soils with sand and gravel as well as sandstone or clay.

Rieslingfreak No. 3 Clare Valley Dry Riesling 2024From the family White Hutt vineyard. Immediate white florals unfurl from the glass. Jasmine and flannel flower. Green Alphonso mango skin, orange blossom and pink lady apple. It’s tightly coiled with a touch of spritz that relaxes and opens to white stone fruit and lemon peel. Acidity, although upright as expected, is surprisingly unified in the wine. The fleshiness of white peach is gathering momentum. This feels like it’s been getting to know itself in the bottle for longer than it has. Ready for drinking but of course another 10-15 years of jubilant life ahead of it yet.
