The 2023 Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is gentle and fine, with curry leaves and white peach, green apple and brine. What a lovely wine this is. It is chalky, nutty, and floral and exceptional value for money at $36 AUD. This is unassailable. ERIN LARKIN, Wine Advocate

The pear flavours here are as overt as they are delicious. This is a wine that gushes up to greet you, its offering of juicy pears wrapped in wheat, cedar and grilled peach characters, its texture soft throughout. There's joy to be had here. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

A rocking little gem in the making, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône has a round, elegant, incredibly satisfying profile as well as textbook blackberry and black raspberry fruits supported by pepper and floral notes. It should be outstanding and well worth a few bottles. JEB DUNNUCK

The medium to full-bodied 2020 Cotes du Rhone will see plenty of more time in tank, yet it's already drinking well, with hints of garrigue and black olives adding nuance to the blackberry and cherry fruit. Silky and clean, it's delightfully easy to drink. WINE ADVOCATE

Grown on deep alluvial river sands and stone left behind by the Esk River, vines experience a maritime influence where warm, dry days are followed by a cool sea breeze.

Handpicked fruit was wholebunch pressed direct to 500L puncheons with full solids. 10% of which was new French oak. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 20 days with a maximum temperature of 24 deg C.

Post fermentation the wine was stirred a few times and left to mature at cool and allowed to go through full Malolactic Fermentation. Stirring every 3- 4 weeks. Minimal sulphur was added after 5 months. After a total of 9 months of barrel maturation the wine was racked to tank for bottling. No fining or filtration.

Light straw colour with a reserved lemon/grapefruit aroma, fresh and penetrating, the palate brisk and bright with vibrant acidity and intense grapefruit/lemon flavours that persist the full length of the very long palate. Superb vitality and balance. It promises to reward cellaring too. Tremendously concentrated and compact, with extreme drive and massive persistence, it positively vibrates with energy. Remarkably complex aromas of dominant stone fruit like nectarine with less of the pear and cut lime character you expect. An intense and powerful wine with a distinctive chalky limestone influence on the palate… Continues the subtle move to Burgundian styles. This is one of the most delicate of Art Series chardies. Elements of the 2017 yet there is more power and intensity within its tight frame. Has slightly more phenolic character. The minerally cracked seashell character is clearly evident here. The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom… On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory-it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line. Pear, grapefruit and lemon oil, almond meal and biscuit spices. It’s a bright and tight wine, a distinctly citrus-laced line of acidity, grapefruit, green olive and honey lemon, it’s flinty too, though has a light creamy cashew gloss to temper, and the finish is long with a zesty aftertaste. This seems like a long term wine, and while it’s kind of brittle as at now, its intensity and length mark it out as a classic Chardonnay. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

If Tiers 1.5m Chardonnay hails from the “new” block of French Bernard clones planted in 2003, fruit for this Tiers Chardonnay is off the “old” block, the original block established in 1979. A cool vintage and low yields bring good concentration, but what really characterises the wine is its open and inviting summery bounce and energy. It rocks. Orange and citrus blossom aromatics, a hint of honeysuckle join aromas of apple, citrus, grapefruit, white peach and spice. Lemony bright acidity rules the palate, enticing tastebuds and melding with lemon sorbet, zest, stone fruit and a distinctive quince tang against a nougat warm and buttery texture. A cushioned width of aroma - this is very inviting. In the mouth a modest cushion too - but there's also some riper fruit depth and a silky texture - a super Bourgogne - with an almost sparkly, mineral finishing style - faintly tannic at the end. BILL NANSON

The 2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay "Les Grandes Coutures" is fragrant on the nose with Golden Delicious and light white cotton scents. The palate is medium-bodied with brisk acidity and a saline finish. NEAL MARTIN

The 2021 Monthélie Les Duresses Blanc has an attractive, lilting bouquet with shaved almond and chamomile scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, citrus fresh with a dab of ginger on the finish. Don't ignore this little gem. NEAL MARTIN

More direct and narrow - almost vertical - clearly some minerality here. Direct, more chiselled, top texture - juicy - that's a great villages from an unexpected appellation - bravo! BILL NANSON

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a classy bouquet, introverted initially then opening with wet limestone, orchard fruit and a touch of lemon verbena. The palate is very well balanced with good concentration, fine acidity and a tensile finish. Frankly, this is better than a lot of grander names and comes recommended. NEAL MARTIN

Yes, a little white blossom perfume - more stony below. Super fluidity - almost an airy style to these flavours despite a shape that's quite chiselled and clean. Holding well in a subtle rather than overt style - but holding all the same - simply delicious, very classy wine. BILL NANSON

From 40-plus year old vines.

Quite rich and full yet refreshment factor is retained. Quite a bit of rich stone fruit to sniff on, preserved lime, ginger, toasted coconut whiffs, a touch of toffee apple in there too. Bold flavours, big and round yet a core of crackling, grapefruity acidity spiked with brine. There’s character in spades here, lots of texture yet crisp edges, a flourish of toffee apple to finish. Meaning ‘under the well’ the vines were planted from 1951 to 1982, an average age of 55 years old across the parcels. Sous Le Puits is made from 5 different parcels spanning 1.8 hectares that Domaine Larue own in this 1er Cru which borders the Meursault appellation in the North of the Puligny AOP, right at the top of the hill of Puligny-Montrachet, East facing. The site has deeper clay-limestone soil than the mid slope Cru’s, plus it’s is a little colder due to it’s slope position. FRANC ABOUT WINE

The 2021 Saint-Romain Sous la Velle offers up aromas of pear, white flowers, citrus oil and freshly baked bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate with good flesh on its structural bones. The personality of the maker - generous and jovial - is on full display via black and red fruits while blue florals and the liquorice that jumps out of the glass, give the wine it's aromatic swagger. On the palate too, it's direct; big on flavour and impact with that same red and black fruited attack laying the groundwork for a more complex array of mineral, hung meat, liquorice, dried herbs and smoke. Pretty much like falling head first into a hypothetical vat the Southern Rhone itself. Medium to full bodied with plenty of structure to cope with anything from the bbq to the one-pot wonder.

It's one of the most authentic things I drink each year, capturing  the ethos of the fading French country wine in a glass. Rustic, reassuring and ultimately flat out delicious. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

Seductive notes of spiced apples, preserved lemons, brioche and fennel excite from the first whiff, leading into a beautifully ripe core that takes centre stage. Flavours of Golden Delicious apples allude to its ripeness while a crunch and minerally vigour is pervading the palate and reining it in. There's flesh coupled with refinement and tension. Ooh, that’s a waft of inviting aroma – lots of white flowers too. Mouth-filling with lots of energy, juicy wine and completely delicious – full but with plenty of energy to balance. BILL NANSON

Exuberantly fresh and bright aromas of green apple, citrus, mineral reduction and a deft application of wood give way to bigger and richer medium weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the impressively persistent, agreeably dry and chiseled finale that displays focused power. Some patience is advised as this is sufficiently tightly wound at present to need it. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND

A completely different nose; silkier, almost cushioned, with yellow fruit and flowers. More direct and intense, this a wine with a certain tension before a finishing burst of flavour that brings much interest. BILL NANSON

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Le Clos du Village is ample and fleshy, bursting with aromas of peach, clear honey, buttery pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and pure, it's a pretty, charming white. WILLIAM KELLEY

The walls of the Clos make this an early ripener. Vines planted in 1997 but some which are on 161/49 need to be pulled out. Lemon and lime in colour. An attractive fresh nose, with a little bit of lime blossom. The palate has a delicious energy underpinned by the minerality of this site, it is generous but well balanced. Lovely wine. STAFF PICKS 2024 - ROSCOE HALLIGAN-ROSE

Too long a story to tell here, but the brief version is, I spent a good bit of time before our recent trip to the Rhone trying to find a producer that fit our wants and needs perfectly, we found three in the end. The Rhone is so exciting at the moment with so many great wines coming out, and many remain at reasonable prices. Still, in the face of this wave of excellent wine it is still rare to find someone crafting wines that are this extraordinary. Paul Formosa is one of the most talented and focused young winemakers I have come across in a long while. His wines are nothing short of spectacular.
Wonderful purity of expression, vivid, bright and clearly defined. Lighter in colour than you may expect, but that belies the deep wells of character that lurk amongst those soaring aromatics, dramatic fruit and the flashes of minerality that add to the overall feel of crispness that accompanies the luxurious and beautifully cushioned fruit. The wine goes on and on and with each moment another nuance or detail escapes from the depths and flicks or flutters along your mouth, tantalising you with the feeling of things to come.
Composed and self-assured, this is not a Gigondas that seeks to stun you with bold and forward fruit, rather it lures you in with its seductive flavours, its shapely profile and its enticing array of perfume. Sneaky structure pays second fiddle here, but it is all perfectly measured and ensures a very long and expressive life ahead. This was an easy choice for my wine of the year. ROSCOE



The promising 2022 Gigondas Cuvée Tradition 1871 mixes 80% Grenache with the remainder equally split between Syrah and Mourvèdre. Glossy red fruits mingle with dashes of dried herbs and a splash of rosewater. Refreshing acidity neatly balances the moderate fruit concentration, persisting all the way through to the sapid finish. The 2022 Gigondas Le Regard Loin is a stunner. Rich and explosive, the 2022 showcases intense rose petal, orange rind, crushed violet, raspberry, strawberry and cranberry. Minty elements and spice box nuances usher in. On the palate, this 2022 strikes the perfect balance between uplifting acidity, concentrated fruit flavors and a polished web of structure-lending tannins. A cuvée first made in the 2019 vintage, the Le Regard Loin has already secured its place amongst the leaders of the appellation. 94-96, NICOLAS GREINACHER, vinous

Plenty of struck match, ginger snap biscuits, cardamom, curry leaf, aniseed, so much spice, pink grapefruit and stonefruit, lots of flinty texture, a buttery white mint chocolate richness, and a very long grippy finish. Fruit off the 35-year-old Robinson vineyard, hand picked and pressed to barrel, 30% new French oak plus a portion to 1000L stainless steel eggs; 50% undergoes mlf. Expect stone fruit and invigorating lemon flavours, lots of blossom and ginger spice, flint, and the funky sulphides entice immensely. The fuller-bodied palate gives way to creamed honey and lemon curd with the oak neatly integrated adding shape and spicy flavours, too. This turns out moreish and savoury. Another glass please.
