In addition to these wines, I also tasted the, Arneis Fox Hill Vineyard, Vin Gris Dry Creek Valley and Grenache Gris Gibson Ranch. Having had a relationship with the Bilbro family as importers of the Marietta wines some years ago we were delighted to find youngest son, Sam, was behind this new venture, Idlewild. In many ways the wines are the anitpathy of what so many believe Californian wines are supposed to be. Hunting out heritage stands of Italian and Rhone varietals (mostly in Mendocino County) Bilbro makes extremely interesting wines characterised by texture, savouriness and subtlety. Skin contact is a part of the wines as is a relatively non-interventionist approach; both indicative of the preferences of the younger brigade of Calfornia producers. PWS
The 2017 White The Bee Flora & Fauna, is a classy, polished wine to drink now and over the next few years. Green pear, mint, white flowers and light tropical overtones all grace this very pretty, expressive wine. The Muscat in particular adds an attractive aromatic flair. Granbazan Ambar 2023Etiqueta Ambar uses grapes from vineyards that are over 40 years' old, mostly in Cambados and Meao in the Salnas Valley on sand and granite soils. Almost Riesling like in terms of structure and acidity (Diego Rios worked in the Mosel Valley) this is stony and intense,with layers of lime cordial, green apple and lemon zest and impressive extract. 2024-29. The 2023 Albariño Granbazán Etiqueta Ámbar, sourced from Val do Salnés, undergoes a few hours of skin contact before fermenting and aging eight months on lees. Yellow in color, it presents aromas of white peach, orange blossom and candied citrus. The palate is dry, light and delicately fresh with a slight spritz adding texture. Delicate and pretty, going from fennel flowers to lemon verbena to lemongrass to lemon sherbet. Gentle but surprisingly deep plashy pools of acidity. Orange citrus and tamarind at the core, that over 10 days softened to buttery saffron. Like all the really good, complex Albariños, it has high-frequency intensity. It feels as if its heart has been hand-drawn with a soft graphite pencil. After being open for days, it just finished on peaches and apricots, as if giving up pretending to be about anything else. Quinta do Sil Godello 2023This Godello comes from old vineyards planted right next to the Sil river, in the Seadur village (Ourense), cultivated in slate and decomposed granitic soil. Destemming and short maceration (>4 hours). Soft pressing and static racked of the must in preparation for a slow temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks.

Santiago Ruiz Rosa Ruiz Albarino 2023A touch of skin contact and extended lees maturation gives this wine a stonier feel than the O Rosal bottling. Raised in small stainless-steel vessels to enrich the texture, it's a chiselled Albariño showing engaging purity, top notes of ripe lemon and sea spray, with plenty of surface and lingering traces of tangy acidity and chalk. Taking its cues from its granite soils, it is a cracking example of the grape and the region.

Ca D'Gal Moscato D'asti DOCG Vite Vecchia 2016As the name implies, Boido’s Vite Vecchia is drawn from old vines, a single parcel on just one hectare of the steeper, limestone-rich slopes of the Valdivilla hillside. Sandro's grandfather planted it with the old Moscato cultivar Canelli Moscato some 60 years ago. The wines are stored on cork for later release in large wooden boxes packed with sand. This is a traditional method of bottle maturation once used in the area, moderating temperature and moisture and blocking out all light.
This is a unique and compelling version of Piemonte’s famous sweet wine. Thanks to the vine age, south-facing exposure and unique blue tufa (clay/limestone soils), the vines here produce intensely flavoured, golden bunches of grapes that, in turn, gift a gloriously deep yet vibrant Moscato with greater textural depth and vinosity than you could have otherwise imagined possible from the grape. An earthy/smoky/mineral impact and complex development might remind you of a Riesling or even an aged Sancerre.

Ca D'Gal Moscato D'Asti DOCG Sant Ilario 2020This wine is simply a revelation. It’s drawn from a single hectare of 70-year-old vines, some 10 kilometres from Boido’s winery in Cassinasco, on a south-facing hillside with limestone-rich soils. Cassinasco is one of only 19 villages (out of a total of 52 in the Moscato DOCG) included in the newly ratified Canelli DOCG. Moscato fruit from this subzone surrounding the town of Canelli has been grown since the 13th century and has always been associated with greatness. It is in the heart of the region, where the chalky soils and high altitude are perfect for Moscato.
It’s a mould-breaking wine of cut-glass purity and restraint, with a fine chalky texture and mineral zeal. The perfume offers gentle notes of grapefruit and lemon sherbet, while the palate is so fine, buoyant yet restrained, shot through with white peach, nectarine and lemon zest. Everything is in its place. It has salty, crystalline freshness, an intense, chalky finish and a length of flavour that is in class of its own. At the Ca’ d’Gal ristoro they match this with everything from cured meats, cured fish and foie gras, through to Brös—the tangy ricotta and grappa specialty of the region. This can age extremely well, developing deeper lime and aged Riesling notes.
