JURA
The Jura is a world unto itself. It's a melting pot of curious whites and reds, many you've probably never heard about. A narrow valley wedged between Burgundy and Switzerland, this is countryside filled with limestone cliffs and hillocks upon which the best vines are planted. These wines are tangy, complex, pure and delicious.
Red or White?
Both. The whites provide a gamut of styles from the fresh and crisp Savagnin and chardonnays topped up (ouillé), to the oxidative, rich and nutty styles left purposely under-filled to encourage flor development. Minerality is a recurrent theme, threading the whites together. The reds can be a little paler in colour but don't be fooled as they carry a lot of flavour.

Styles
Most of the whites show saline and hazelnut tones, and if they are developed under flor there are richer yeasty and oyster shell flavours. As for the mountain reds, there is a cooler tannin profile and a lovely show of earthy freshness.

Franck Lihour is a relative newcomer with only his first vintage in 2014. But within a short amount of time, he has lifted his family's estate, Domaine Castera, to be one of the top producers of Jurançon. His ability to tame the searing acidity with concentrated fruit while keeping the wines bone dry and without ever losing any balance is exceptional. His work in the vineyard, slow & long pressing, time in old neutral oak and use of whole clusters the key to maintaining the knife edge wines he has endeared his fans with.
Waxy citrus, pear and white orchard fruit entice you in while a gentle floral lilt and softly spice nose keep you coming back for more. The palate is refined and electric, with a long, slightly leesy finish, that seems to build and build in on its self as you continue to sip it. This is at once luxurious and broad that seems to paint the flavours across your palate while sitting up, fresh and bright on a web of tightly woven acidity. Very cool!

Domaine Joly Cotes du Jura Poulsard 2022Managed by Cédric Joly, Domaine Joly encompasses approximately 6.5 hectares and offers a comprehensive range of Jura wines. The reds are vinified from fully destemmed grapes and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with about 15 days of skin contact. They age for a relatively short period of six to seven months, leading to an early release. Joly explains, "When I took over from my father 30 years ago, he instilled in me the idea that it's easier to correct a wine with a little chaptalization rather than playing around with artificial acidities. That's why I'm usually the first to harvest grapes compared to neighboring vineyards.”

Domaine des Carlines Chateau Chalon Vin Jaune 2016 620mlComing from a cool vintage, this 9 year old wine is youthful and radiant, still holding it's core of concentrated, still very primary, fruit alluding to a long life ahead. Lemon curd meets ripe yellow stone fruit with a delicate sweet herbal zing and a long mouthwatering salty twang. Its powerful, loaded with flavour and freshness with a juicy sherry-like side note. Domaine des Carlines La Vouivre Chardonnay/Savagnin 2021Coming off a terrible low yielding 2021 harvest resulting in the loss of 80% of their crop!! The up side to this is all their top sites go into this one "lower tier" wine. A wine that really reflects the unique and exceptional Jura terroir; driven by rocks and minerals and is loaded with flavour and interest. Fennel seeds and just ripe apricots on wet stone. Domaine des Carlines Tremoulettes Chardonnay 2020La Trémoulette comes from a single plot of Chardonnay of 1.3 hectares on grey marl soils. It's full of concentrated primary fruit of white peach and citrus fruits. But it’s the saline drive and nutty edge that gives the wine so much vitality and seriousness. Domaine des Carlines En Beaumont Savagnin 20220.5 hectare in the Château-Chalon appellation, but classified as Côtes-du-Jura as it is not Vin Jaune. There is no flor character or oxidative elements in this wine thanks to the constant topping of barrels in the maturation process. Instead it’s all about the pristine delicate savagnin fruit of fresh apricots and green apple alongside a pepper spice that plays with the full weight and rich texture in the wine.
