Franz Haas Lepus Pinot Bianco Lepus 2021The vines here reflect the challenging extremes of viticulture. Surrounded by mountains, winters arev long and freezing and the short summer months scorching hot, with nearby Bolzano often recording Italy’s hottest temperatures. Breezes from nearby Lago di Garda provide a moderating influence and there is a dramatic difference between day and night temperatures, especially at the vineyards over 500 metres. The wines are characterized by crisp fruit and refreshing acidity with real personality and ageing potential.
From vineyards between 600-800 metres with soils with a high content of clay and lime, this is fermented off skins at controlled temperature, mostly in stainless steel with 20% in old barriques and aged on lees for a few months for a fuller body and complexity. About one third of the wine also goes through malolactic fermentation. On the nose there are floral notes, ripe apples, almond and fresh bread crust. Cantina Terlano's Cuvée Classico is a stunning white blend from Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy, crafted with 60% Pinot Blanc, 30% Chardonnay, and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Grown on quartz and volcanic rock soils, the grapes benefit from the region's unique alpine terroir. The wine is matured on the lees for 6-7 months, with 20% aged in large wooden barrels, resulting in a beautifully complex texture with remarkable freshness.
On the nose, it offers an elegant bouquet of white flowers, lemon peel, ripe orchard fruits, and chamomile, underscored by delicate hints of almond and mint. The palate delivers a harmonious balance of freshness and depth, showcasing vibrant flavours of apricot pit, citrus zest, and a distinct mineral character. Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021One of our favourite rhone reds year-in and year-out. There may be nothing quite as satisfying as a good value Rhone red and this one always delivers. Delas Freres is based in the beautiful northern Rhone with a large holding of their own vineyards supplemented by long-term relationships with quality growers all over the rhone. How they manage to put so much goodness into a bottle at this price is an astonishing feat to say the least.
While this indulgent red reflects the north’s regional dominance of Shiraz over Grenache, it reflects the darker fruits and a spicy earthiness often found in the southern Rhone, where this wine hails from. Silky rather than heavy, it still feels concentrated with bright, bubbly raspberry fruits complimented by a little dollop of wild, blackberry fruit. A waft of violets and pastille fruit just add to its appeal.
