  1. Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo san En Piasi 2019 1500ml
Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo san En Piasi 2019 1500ml
The 2019 Barolo EnPiasì is a tiny bottling of just 150 magnums, done with hand destemmed fruit. There's good depth, but I don't see the freshness of the best years, while the volatile acidity is problematic. Making wine on a very small scale presents a number of technical challenges, and that unfortunately shows here. ANTONIO GALLONI

    Crissante Alessandria Barolo DOCG 2019

Lifted, herbal sort of nose. Super-fine tannins – atomically small, very feathery, but very dominant too. Plenty of black fruit that finishes with classic bitterness.

    Crissante Alessandria Barolo Capalot 2019

Seghesio Barolo Castelletto La Villa 2019
The 2019 Barolo Castelletto is laced with rose petal, cinnamon, white pepper, mint, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium in body, with lovely persistence, the 2020 captures all the character of this Monforte site. The aromatics are especially nuanced in 2019. Brisk acids and vibrant tannins pull it all together on the finish. ANTONINO GALLONI, Vinous

Aromas of red plums and cherries with hints of cocoa, nut shell and dried hibiscus flower. Some citrus peel, too. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and slightly chewy with a subtle red fruit character and hints of dried herbs and walnuts to close. Flavorful. A little austere at the end. Try after 2025. JAMES SUCKLING

  6. Tiziano Grasso Barolo La Briccolina 2019
Tiziano Grasso Barolo La Briccolina 2019
The 2019 Barolo Briccolina is a classy, powerful wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, gravel, spice, incense and lavender makes a fine first impression, before big Serralunga tannins make themselves felt. This imposing Barolo will benefit from a few years in bottle. It is a fine effort from the Grasso family. ANTONIO GALLONI

The Grasso family have owned Briccolina since 1923 and for many years sold their fruit to neighbouring wineries. In 2012, Daniele convinced his father Tiziano to bottle a little Barolo under their own name. Sadly, Tiziano passed away in 2017 and it’s been left to Daniele and Tiziano’s wife Simona to continue the dream. Their six hectares is the largest single holding of Briccolina and occupies the best part of the MGA, which neighbours Ornato and Falletto in the southern part of Serralunga D’Alba. We were thoroughly impressed with our cask tastings of 2019-2022 and the new cantina will be ready for vintage 2023. Tiziano would be proud. TREMBATH & TAYLOR

    Vietti Barolo Monvigliero 2019 1500ml

    2 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is stunning. What a wine. Rich, heady and explosive, the 2019 is a gorgeous, spherical Barolo that dazzles right out of the gate. Aromatically broad and expansive, the 2019 fleshes out beautifully in the glass. Bright red-toned fruit, orange zest, mint, spice and bright saline notes saturate the palate on the back end. The 2019 is a total stunner, even in this stage of youthful austerity. It comes across as a bit rustic compared to the 2018, but the final verdict on that won't be evident for at least a number of years. This is the first vintage that includes a second parcel in Monvigliero. In the cellar, one lot saw submerged cap maceration, the other did not. (97+)ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

  8. Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019
    Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019
The Dirupi 2019 Valtellina Superiore is generous and balanced, with a 360-degree approach to the palate underlined by dark fruit, plum jam, bluebells and other mountain wildflowers. You smell alpine slopes, cool weather and glacier-like aromas. The palate shows some dried herb and lightly powdery tannins. Fruit comes from a two-hectare site that is divided into nine parcels with mostly sandy soils. Production is 9,915 bottles. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate

The 2019 Valtellina Superiore is super-expressive right out of the gate. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco meld into a core of bright red Nebbiolo fruit, with dusty tannins that wrap it all together. I suppose there could be a bit more finesse here (especially in the tannins) but all things considered, this is nicely done. ANTONIO GALLONI

Opening with heady scents of Alpine herb, iris, dark spice and perfumed berry, it showcases the magnificent site, the fantastic vintage and the generational experience of the Scavino family. Stunningly delicious and radiant, it delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, blood orange and licorice set against firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. 10. Arpepe Grumello Rocca di Piro Valtellina Superiore 2019
Arpepe Grumello Rocca di Piro Valtellina Superiore 2019

Sth Facing, 350-500m altitude, slate and limestone soils
Grumello is always called 'the precocious one.' A mix of limestone and clay soils, it offers depth coupled with nervosity. Packed with blueberries, violets and white button mushrooms around a core of pitch-perfect red cherries. Subtle notes of licorice and spice waft in and out. The tannins are fine yet firm leaving a powdery trail on the palate. Pure, precise and precocious. GABRIELLE POY

Sage, bay leaf, cherry, smoky mineral and steely, paprika, a warm and cool ride here, and tannic too, pleasingly so, with orange peel, grainy dry tannin and a peppery and herbal finish of good length. Such character. Cherry richness. So good. GARY WALSH

  12. Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2019
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2019
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. The 2019 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, but there is enough fruit to make me think it will be superb, in time. (94) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Very aromatic with hibiscus, crab apple, orange blossom, and ripe strawberry on the nose. Full-bodied, very layered and powerful, yet it remains very fine textured with an intense finish. Slightly more structured than before. Perhaps due to the addition of wines from a new vineyard? Try after 2027. (97) JAMES SUCKLING

A blend of several small parcels of vines from several communes, Le Vigne is Sandrone's ode to the classic, Barolo-wide blend that was once the norm. All the sites that contribute to Le Vigne are markedly different in terms of altitude, soil and exposure, and together provide a broad overview of Barolo in a given year. 2019 is the first year to include Nebbiolo from Sandrone's new holding in Le Coste di Monforte in Monforte d'Alba, a site Sandrone had been farming since 2000. So, from this vintage, Le Vigne includes fruit from Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba. Regarding the winemaking, wild yeast fermentation begins in tank before the malolactic conversion and aging in mostly used, 500-litre French oak casks. Approximately 20-30% of the fruit is fermented as bunches, with the destemmed portion having a very high percentage of whole berries. Time on skins varied from ten days to up to one month. Total time in oak was 20-22 months and the wine was, as always, bottled unfiltered.

Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate 2020
The 2020 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is gorgeous. Aromatically captivating and nuanced, the 2020 impresses right out of the gate. All the classic Ginestra signatures are present. Today the tannins are pretty imposing in the positive sense, as they are present, but also impeccably balanced within the wine's frame. This is impressive stuff. The substantial, balsamic-infused Ginestra finish is captivating. (96) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Notes of ripe cherries and red plums with hints of sandalwood and licorice. Medium-bodied with firm tannins. It’s structured and focused with complexity and depth. Ripe and vivid fruit in the middle with a dry, polished finish. Try after 2028. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

    Colombera & Garella Bramaterra 2019
70% Nebbiolo with 15% Croatina and 15% Vespolina from a two hectare vineyard in Masserano. The soils here are high-acid, reddish-brown porphyritic sand of volcanic origin, which lends a particularly mineral character to the wines. Vespolina and Croatina are co-fermented for 10 days, Nebbiolo for 15+, aged for 24 months in old barriques. Bramaterra is typically more structured and robust with dark berry fruit, spice, iron and meaty notes.

  16. Sandro Fay Valtellina Riserva Superiore 'Carteria' 2019
Sandro Fay Valtellina Riserva Superiore 'Carteria' 2019

Carteria is a single vineyard that sits at around 550 metres in the western part of the municipality of Teglio. At this higher level the vineyards sit in a cooler pocket and the vines produce fruit and grape juice that is tighter and nervier and showing more primary rock mineral character. Winemaking involves fermentation in stainless steel and aging for 12 months in 30hl and 500ltr old oak barrels and then a further aging in bottle of 24 months. Carteria has been made as a Riserva (min 3 years of aging) since 2013.

The wine is intensely concentrated with floral hints of rose and cool spice with a fruit profile that shows hints of darker fruits in addition to red. Tannins are finer and more elegant than you would expect from one of the warmer years on record. Overall, the wine is powerful, savoury and earthy with many years ahead of it to unfurl.

    Francesco Rinaldi Barolo 2019
Hailing from grapes grown in the townships of La Morra, Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and aged in large Slavonian casks, the firm’s lovely entry level Barolo has a quintessential Nebbiolo nose of violet, rose, new leather, camphor and woodland berry. It shows class, focus and finesse, featuring juicy red berry, star anise and baking spice before a mentholated close. Taut tannins and bright acidity keep it balanced. Drink 2026–2034. KERIN O’KEEFE

    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo 2019
This fragrant red has aromas of baking spice, violet, vineyard dust and blue flower. The savory, elegant palate shows ripe Morello cherry, star anise and clove framed in vibrant acidity and taut, refined tannins.(95) KERIN O'KEEFE, wineenthusiast.com

There's a lightness and nervy spine to the core of maraschino cherries and licorice - a feature of the sandy soils perhaps.  At the moment it feels a little tense, there's a swell of flavours at the fore, but it needs time. Tobacco and balsamic earthy notes balance the berries and dry spices. This is finely tuned and packed with excitement, but tuck it away and it will reward with a few years under its belt. Francesco Rinaldi Barolo Brunate 2019
Perfumed, delicious and structured, the compelling 2019 Brunate from Francesco Rinaldi & Figli opens with heady scents of fragrant blue flower, ripe berry, menthol and dark spice. Firm but elegantly structured, the focused, savory palate doles out crushed raspberry, wild strawberry, licorice and crushed mint framed in tightly woven, extremely refined tannins. Grapes hail from the Brunate cru that spans the villages of La Morra and Barolo and are cultivated 250-350m above sea level in soils that are mainly limestone and clay with a small percentage of sand, giving the wine both body, finesse and vibrancy. This is the best Brunate I’ve ever tried from the estate. Drink 2029–2039. (96) KERIN O’KEEFE

    Vietti Barolo Brunate 2019
The 2019 Barolo Brunate is a powerhouse. Black cherry, plum, spice, lavender, mocha, gravel and scorched earth all build as this virile, potent Barolo struts its stuff. The Brunate is another super-impressive wine in this range. To be perfectly honest, the Brunate has never been one of my favorite wines here, but the 2019 is undeniably great. Perhaps the combination of parcels Vietti has today explains the multi-dimensional vibrancy that comes through. This is simply magnificent. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI

  22. Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Castellero 2019
    Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Castellero 2019
The ridge that descends from Bussia, wedged between Cannubi Boschis and Pugnane, terminates in the Castellero MGA. Well known for its more poised style, it doesn't differ here: leafy lightness, dried cherry, bright mint and milky aromas are allied to a graceful, relaxing attack then firm tannins, fierce acidity and a fresh, juicy red currant and pomegranate fruit character. A dynamic finish. ALDO FIORDELLI, decanter.com.

Spontaneous fermentation. Aged in 4,000-litre Klaus Pauscha Slavonian oak. Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Brooding and a little exotic on the nose with hints of dark spice. Not entirely open yet. Concentrated but stubborn palate with lifted acidity that is a little marked, but this is still embryonic. Fine, grainy tannins on the finish. Far from ready and with lots of powdery tannins on a complex, layered finish. WALTER SPELLER, jancisrobinson.com

Conterno Fantino Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris 2019
The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is another terrific wine from Conterno-Fantino. Crushed flowers, cedar, pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowers and worn-in leather give the 2019 striking aromatic presence. Here, too, Fabio Conterno has done a terrific job in taming the Monforte tannins. The Gris never has the completeness of the other crus, but in 2019 it is positively striking. Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Villero 2019
Forest floor, leather, camphor, violet and dark culinary spice aromas come to the forefront on Giacomo Fenocchio's 2019 Villero. Still youthfully austere, the firmly structured palate shows dried cherry, blood orange, licorice and hazelnut framed in tightly wound and tightly woven, close-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it lifted and balanced. Give this time to fully develop. Drink 2029-2044. KERIN O'KEEFE

Mid ruby. Ripe cherry nose but fresh and with a hint of mace. Lively cherry-fruit palate with juicy acidity. Coating tannins reveal themselves especially on the finish. Supple, long, youthful and lively yet with plenty of substance. WALTER SPELLER

Dried flowers, red fruit, almond paste, some dried mint, liquorice root - gorgeous aromatics here. The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. 30. Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2019
    Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2019

25 days on the skins and aged for two years in French barrique of which 25% was new.

Lustrous and just mid ruby. Closed and brooding on the nose, with a hint of black pepper. Gorgeous and fresh on the palate but very backward and just hinting at red currant and raspberry. Firm but attractive tannins add real chew to the whole. The oak is practically indiscernible. Very slow to come out, elegant and complex but patience is needed. WALTER SPELLER, www.jancisrobinson.com

The 2019 Barolo Gattera is a powerful, broad wine. Even in the new style favored by Veglio today, the Gattera shows its natural breath along with a decidedly dark expression of La Morra. Sweet black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha all meld together effortlessly. The Gattera offers lovely upfront appeal married to the classicism of the year. That's a pretty appealing combination in my book. ANTONIO GALLONI

Made from vines planted in 1950, this has aromas of berry, oak-driven spice, camphor and citrusy notes. Showing structure and a weightless finesse, the elegant, full-bodied palate delivers ripe cranberry, Morello cherry, licorice, coconut and coffee bean set against fine-grained tannins. Vibrant acidity keeps it full of energy. Drink 2026–2044 KERIN O'KEEFE

22 days on the skins and aged for two years in French barriques of which 25% were new.

Lustrous and just mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet raspberry with savoury, salty, minerally notes and a little rich on the nose. With aeration there are hints of mint. Succulent, yet fresh, fruit layered with lots of clayey tannins. Closes up on the finish, demonstrating that it needs much more time. WALTER SPELLER, www.jancisrobinson.com

Veglio's 2019 Barolo Castelletto is redolent of spice, menthol, licorice, sage and lavender. Incisive Monforte tannins and bright acids give the Castelletto its shape and a good bit of overall drive as well. I would cellar this for a few years and see what happens. ANTONIO GALLONI

This lovely Barolo has aromas of small red fruit, licorice and hazelnut. Reflecting the nose, the linear, full-bodied palate features juicy raspberry, crushed strawberry, star anise and toasted hazelnut alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. It still needs time to unwind.
