His family owns Marietta, while brothers Jake and Scot are behind the reborn Limerick Lane. At Idlewild, Sam Bilbro focuses on Italian and other less well-known varieties. In addition to these wines, I also tasted the, Arneis Fox Hill Vineyard, Vin Gris Dry Creek Valley and Grenache Gris Gibson Ranch. Having had a relationship with the Bilbro family as importers of the Marietta wines some years ago we were delighted to find youngest son, Sam, was behind this new venture, Idlewild. In many ways the wines are the anitpathy of what so many believe Californian wines are supposed to be. Hunting out heritage stands of Italian and Rhone varietals (mostly in Mendocino County) Bilbro makes extremely interesting wines characterised by texture, savouriness and subtlety. Skin contact is a part of the wines as is a relatively non-interventionist approach; both indicative of the preferences of the younger brigade of Calfornia producers. PWS
The 2017 White The Bee Flora & Fauna, is a classy, polished wine to drink now and over the next few years. Green pear, mint, white flowers and light tropical overtones all grace this very pretty, expressive wine. The Muscat in particular adds an attractive aromatic flair. Diego & Damiano Barale Dolcetto 2021Fruit entirely sourced from the Monforte d'Alba Cru of San Giovanni, which lends the wine a darker element and a touch of the more savoury, ironstone character. They are background notes to the brighter, fresher more gregarious elements that come to the fore. There is weaves of spice, rosehip tea. Primary, approachable and oh so drinkable. This is for consumption not contemplation. Not the wine to open while considering Everettian many worlds interpretation (sorry, continuing a theme from previous offers) but one to drink while listening to a solid play list and cooking something fun. Today the estate is run by two sisters and each as a daughter who is slowly taking over the reins. It's a crazy combination of staunch traditionalism and a modern view on what it means to craft such historically important wines. It is an estate for which we have almost endless admiration, for many reasons not which least is the incredible quality focus they bring to their whole suuite of wines from cru Barolo to this not so humble dolcetto.
If there was ever a wine that could convince you we should be drinking more Dolcetto, then this is it. While Barolo and Barbaresco are the undeniable international stars of Piemonte, Dolcetto is it's heart and soul and a wine that is always on the Piemontese dining table and with examples like this, you can see why. Some dark red cherries and berry fruit are dusted with sweet cake spice and peppery goodness. It's a plush little package is knotted together wonderfully with a firm press of tannin, which sweeps across the palate to clean everything up at the back kept fresh by a jolt of bright acidity. They are traditionalist at heart employing large format oak, no fining or filtering nor any herbicides or pesticides in the vineyards. The approach across the board is thoughtful, deliberate and with a hands-off approach in the winery. E. Pira Chiara Boschis Dolcetto d'Alba 2023The 2023 Dolcetto D'Alba was scheduled to bottled soon after I tasted it. A youthful purple/magenta color, it was spicy out of barrel, with a lovely lift of cracked pepper, fresh black raspberries, and purple flowers. Pfeiffer Wines Old Distillery Rare Rutherglen Muscat 500mlThe colour tells a big part of the story: deep, dark amber brown. Deep amber in appearance. The nose is incredibly complex and concentrated, with aromas of burnt oranges, roasted walnuts, sandalwood, dried fruit and dark chocolate coated coffee beans. The Tuckheim Range is the value tier and represents classic Alsatian whites from a regional blend of grapes as well as estate fruit. These vineyards are grown on the valley floor, where the glacial debris of rolled stones, granite and gneiss has settled over the aeons. Wine from these soils tends to have a lovely fruit profile underpinned with a stoney-mineral tension that screams 'drink me' and marks the wines with the typical mineral streak of Alsace.
