Zalto BalanceThe idea behind 'Balance' was to design a glass that would bring out the best in new-wave artisanal/low-intervention wines that emphasise texture and structure as much as fruit. Michael Hinterleitner, whose family owns Zalto, explains, "We have been testing different prototypes for two years to create a glass that harmonises certain aspects of wines not often found in conventional winemaking."
So, after two years of intensive tastings and discussions with winegrowers and sommeliers, 'Balance' was born. Zalto recommends the glass for deep, complex whites-Chardonnay and full-bodied Riesling, for example-to fully show their depth and subtlety while harmonising aromas and flavours without concentrating one element. They also recommend the glass for complex sparkling wines, skin-macerated whites and reds made with high proportions of bunches.

The 1988 Marsala Vergine Riserva mixes amber with red hues, lifting up dusty and savory with notes of cave-aged gouda, quince, baked apple and clove. With time in the glass, it gains in volume, evolving to show rich dark chocolates and dried roses. There are depths of texture here, yet it's wonderfully balanced by vibrant acidity as salted caramel and exotic spices wash across the palate, leaving a coating of mineral-drenched orchard fruits under an air of burnt sugar and tobacco. The experience goes on and on, as minutes can go by, and you're still not just tasting but feeling the 1988's glycerol heft lingering incredibly long. Australian glass artist and printmaker, Brian Hirst creates some of the most visual and tactile wine decanters. Brian's standing in the art world is revered - his pieces are exhibited throughout the world, including galleries in Sydney, New York and Paris - in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
His interest in functional design has led to the creation of charismatic and stunning decanters which we're offering today. These are fluid yet functional designs, beautiful to hold and use.
This bowling ball G+B decanter was a collaboration between friends Giorgio de Maria (leading Italian importer) and artist Brian Hirst (hence the name G+B). A former sommelier, Giorgio helped design a decater that moulds into your hand, making it a pleasure to use.
