Jean-Paul Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2023Jean-Paul Thévenet is certainly a name in everyone's ear ever since Kermit Lynch dubbed him, together with Marcel Lapierre, Guy Breton and Jean Foillard, as Beaujolais' famous "Gang of Four" in the '80s. The essence of their philosophy: take a step back, appreciate and cultivate old vines, apply organic farming practices, avoid the use of sulphur, let natural ferments do their magic and help the terroir express itself through minimal intervention. Following these principals, each of them has proven that Beaujolais is more than just 'Nouveau' and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines.2023GamayFrance352$95.00 As low as $85.50

Sandro Fay Valtellina Riserva Superiore 'Carteria' 2019
Carteria is a single vineyard that sits at around 550 metres in the western part of the municipality of Teglio. At this higher level the vineyards sit in a cooler pocket and the vines produce fruit and grape juice that is tighter and nervier and showing more primary rock mineral character. Winemaking involves fermentation in stainless steel and aging for 12 months in 30hl and 500ltr old oak barrels and then a further aging in bottle of 24 months. Carteria has been made as a Riserva (min 3 years of aging) since 2013.
The wine is intensely concentrated with floral hints of rose and cool spice with a fruit profile that shows hints of darker fruits in addition to red. Tannins are finer and more elegant than you would expect from one of the warmer years on record. Overall, the wine is powerful, savoury and earthy with many years ahead of it to unfurl.

Gregoire Hoppenot Fleurie Les Moriers 2021Hoppenot farms almost three-hectares of this imposing east-facing terroir overlooking the famous windmill of Moulin-a-Vent. Les Moriers shares a border with Poncié, Les Roches and Les Garants and the vines at the top of the vineyard lie a stone’s throw from the winery.
Vine age varies from 35 to 90 years. Rising from 260 metres on the Moulin-a-Vent border to 340 metres at the top of the slope, this steep hillside contains two mineral rich soil types: the vines at the top of the slope are on very poor soils of shallow granitic sand; then it becomes heavier in the Bas de Moriers with increasing clay concentration over the granite bedrock. Grégoire Hoppenot farms in both sectors, reserving the best fruit for this single-terroir bottling.2021GamayFrance352$63.00 As low as $56.70 -
Pavillon de Chavannes Cote de Brouilly Ambassades 2022The history of Pavillon de Chavannes is deeply intertwined with that of Château Thivin, another esteemed estate in Côte de Brouilly. In 1861, the Jambon-Chanrion family acquired the estate. The pivotal moment came after World War I, when Yvonne Chanrion married Claude Geoffray, heir to Château Thivin. Yvonne brought with her one-third of her family’s prized vineyards and later acquired another third from her sister. While Yvonne and Claude expanded Thivin’s holdings together, they never had children. Upon Yvonne’s passing in 1987, her family’s original vineyard inheritance returned to Paul Jambon of the Jambon-Chanrion family, along with half of the additional lands she and Claude had purchased. The remaining holdings passed to Claude’s great-nephew, also named Claude, ensuring Thivin’s continued legacy.2022GamayFrance352$58.00 As low as $52.20

Dominique Piron Fleurie 2022It might sound illogical, but this has serious floral charm on the nose. Then comes a wonderful filigree elegance on the medium-bodied palate. As appealing as the first sip is, you have to go back again and again to get all the complexity that unfurls at the long, stony finish. Delicious now, but good aging potential. Drink or hold. Dominique Piron Morgon Cote de Py 2021The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py is mostly destemmed, with a three-week maceration in used barrels. It has more red fruit on the nose than the Grand Cras, hints of blood orange tincturing the raspberry and wild strawberry—nicely controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-tuned tannins, complex and well-balanced, notably mineral-driven on the finish. This is worth seeking out. Piero Busso Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
The Langhe Nebbiolo is crafted from a selection of 10- to 15-year-old vines in the Neive crus of Balluri, Albesani and Gallina. The wine fermented in stainless steel and then aged in oak botti for 12 months before being bottled unfiltered.
This is just a gorgeous, old-school rendition of Nebbiolo. Pale-coloured, medium-bodied, and loaded with red and blue fruits, hints of rosewater, red meat and leather, as well as plenty of powdery tannins. A Nebbiolo to open when you’re in the mood for a Pinot-weighted wine. Gorgeous.

Lalu Barolo Le Coste di Monforte 2020
Just mid ruby. Intense nose of dried fruit, damson and rosemary. Lush fruit given an edge by the bite of energetic tannins. The fruit becomes more and more pure on the palate. Fantastic focus and juiciness on the finish. The spicy fruit is reminiscent of Monforte d’Alba but with added energy. Dynamic. WALTER SPELLER, JancisRobinson.com
Organic. Lalù farms just 0.5 hectares in one of Monforte’s great Crus, Le Coste di Monforte. With an average altitude of 420 metres, this south-facing vineyard is the highest and southernmost vineyard in Monforte. The site perfectly fits Lalù’s preference for finesse and openness. Although its 35-year-old vines lie parallel to the Ginestra and Mosconi Crus, Barolo from this vineyard is typically prettier and rounder than its neighbours—this being attributed to the unusually high content of sand layered throughout the region’s Sant’Agata marls. This year, the Barolo was mostly destemmed and fermented in a tronconique oak vat. It spent one month on skins, including just over two weeks with the cap submerged in the juice. Aging was in large oak vats (from Austria and Alto Adige) for two years before eight months in concrete. This release is only Lalù’s second Barolo and explains why there is already so much excitement surrounding this producer.

Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese 2019Inviting aromas of sandalwood, blue flower, resin and mocha come to the forefront. The aromas follow through to the savory, rounded palate along with dried cherry, anisette and ground clove. It's polished and accessible, with fine-grained tannins. It closes on the warmth of alcohol. Drink through 2028. KERIN O'KEEFE, Wine Enthusiast
The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is another terrific wine in this range from Piero Busso. Ample and expressive, with terrific depth, the 2019 offers up copious dark red fruit, blood orange and sweet spice tobacco. Firm tannins wrap it all together. The Borghese offers an appealing mix of ripe, racy fruit and mid-weight structure. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Busso bottles two cuvées from his 1.2 hectares of vines in the Albesani cru (the other is the Viti Vecchie offered below). On the western hills above Neive, Albesani is one of the shining stars of Barbaresco. In his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that here, “…the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe”. The vines were planted between 30 and 70 years ago at 260 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, clay and marl with an ideal southwest exposure. This fermented naturally in tank, then aged in 25-hectolitre cask for 26 months.2019NebbioloItaly457Special Price $147.00 Regular Price $174.00 -
Piero Busso Barbaresco Barbaresco San Stunet 2019
San Stunet is the only Busso vineyard not in Neive, and instead is in the village of Trieso. Busso farms 1.5 hectares of vines, which sit at 400 metres in altitude on a steep gradient (16%). San Stunet soils are mostly yellow marl with a lot of limestone. The Busso vines lie on the southeast face of the ridge which delivers the deepest and most articulate Nebbiolo of this cru. The site is late ripening, usually picked 10 days after the estate’s other vineyards.
The winemaking is identical to the Albesani Vigna Borgese, but this has both more flesh and is punchier, suggesting both more tannins and acidity. Decant it and serve it in a Burgundy glass and you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful Nebbiolo loaded with character (dark cherry, honey, leather), depth and structure. It would ideally get 10 to 15 years bottle age, but if not, then lots of air.

Piero Busso Barbaresco Barbaresco Gallina 2018The 2018 Barbaresco Gallina is the most open-knit and forward of the three 2018 Barbarescos I tasted. Ripeness feels a bit pushed here, but it works nicely within the style of the wine. Super-ripe red cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, orange peel and exotic spice overtones build effortlessly as the Gallina shows off its racy, flamboyant personality. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Purchased in 1999, the domaine farms 1.3 hectares of what is possibly the best-known MGA of Neive (made famous by Bruno Giacosa). Sitting at 240 metres altitude on a low and twisting ridge opposite the Albesani Cru, Busso’s vines are south-west exposed and face the river. It’s a windy microclimate despite not being particularly high. The soil here is the limestone-rich Sant’Agata marl with sandy and calcareous layers. In 2015 Piero began to separate his oldest vines here (planted in the 1950s), for a separate old vine bottling (see below). The vines for this wine were planted between 25 and 50 years ago. Aging is the same as for the other crus (two years in Slavonian oak casks), but the wine is kept an extra year in bottle before release.2018NebbioloItaly457Special Price $191.00 Regular Price $225.00 -
Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesanii Viti Vecchie Riserva 2016Very stylish and textural, with a fine-grained structure, dominated by red fruits. Firm tannins back up the nicely textured fruit, which shows great concentration. An intense wine showing such finesse.
(96) JAMIE GOODE, Wineanorak
Introduced in 2015, Busso’s Gallina Viti Vecchie is drawn from a small parcel of 1953 vines planted in the heart of the Gallina cru. The soil in this part of the vineyard is rich in calcareous clay (bluish-grey marl), but there is also some sand. Piero Busso describes this wine has having more depth, structure and enveloping fruit than the younger-vine cuvée. Consequently, the grapes are macerated for up to 60 days with a submerged cap and the aging is in large Slavonian oak casks for 36 months, prior to another 36 months in bottle.2019NebbioloItaly457Special Price $352.00 Regular Price $415.00 -
Babo Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Red fruits, and really quite dusty and peppery, along with some floral notes. It’s medium-bodied, tannin has a gentle chew to it, and a whole lot of dusty spice cupboard character, but it’s fresh ,with some cranberry crunch to acidity, and a dry and gently ferrous finish of solid length. It’s maybe picked on the cusp of ripeness, though it does have energy and plenty of character. Lively. Good to drink. Frisky! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
The latest wine from Justin Bubb and the Babo team is a Langhe Nebbiolo, sourced from vineyards near the famed town of Castiglione Falletto. The sites mainly face southwest between 300 and 400 metres above sea level. The 2021 vintage came with challenges: spring frosts affected yields, and the summer months were warm, but the fruit quality at the end of the season was fantastic. The fruit was handpicked, destemmed and macerated for about a week with twice-daily pumpovers. To preserve freshness and bright red-fruit appeal, the wine matured in concrete tanks for just a short period.2021NebbioloItaly495Special Price $35.00 Regular Price $42.00 -
Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo 2016Aromas of wild berry, rose and baking spice align with a whiff of menthol. Elegantly focused, the vibrant, youthfully austere palate delivers crushed raspberry, Morello cherry and licorice framed in taut, close-grained tannins and fresh acidity before a rather drying, tight finish. Give it a few more years to fully unwind. Drink 2024-2036. (96) KERIN O'KEEFE
Youthful ruby. Concentrated and lifted and with hints of sweet spice on the nose. Lithe, sweet and ripe cherry fruit palate charged with stalky tannins. Great intensity and transparency of fruit. Arpepe Grumello Buon Consiglio Riserva 2016Very fine, pure, ultra-mineral expression of Nebbiolo here. Strawberry, raspberry, spice, fennel, mint and stones. It's bright and very tight, with fine crushed rock tannin, red fruits and orange peel, even some bergamot tea perfume. Finish is long and firm. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo 2019This fragrant red has aromas of baking spice, violet, vineyard dust and blue flower. The savory, elegant palate shows ripe Morello cherry, star anise and clove framed in vibrant acidity and taut, refined tannins.(95) KERIN O'KEEFE, wineenthusiast.com
There's a lightness and nervy spine to the core of maraschino cherries and licorice - a feature of the sandy soils perhaps. At the moment it feels a little tense, there's a swell of flavours at the fore, but it needs time. Tobacco and balsamic earthy notes balance the berries and dry spices. This is finely tuned and packed with excitement, but tuck it away and it will reward with a few years under its belt. GABRIELLE POY2019NebbioloItaly457$122.00 As low as $109.80 -
Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San Giovanni DOCG 2018This is a beautiful wine with a lively and layered bouquet, topped off with a bright cherry highlight. The Gianfranco Alessandria 2018 Barolo San Giovanni continues to evolve in the glass and show its complexity. A second round of aromas includes spice, sweet oak and rust. Francesco Rinaldi Barolo DOCG 2018The 2018 Barolo is a delicate, pretty wine with plenty of immediacy and overall appeal. Francesco Rinaldi Barolo Brunate 2019Perfumed, delicious and structured, the compelling 2019 Brunate from Francesco Rinaldi & Figli opens with heady scents of fragrant blue flower, ripe berry, menthol and dark spice. Firm but elegantly structured, the focused, savory palate doles out crushed raspberry, wild strawberry, licorice and crushed mint framed in tightly woven, extremely refined tannins. Grapes hail from the Brunate cru that spans the villages of La Morra and Barolo and are cultivated 250-350m above sea level in soils that are mainly limestone and clay with a small percentage of sand, giving the wine both body, finesse and vibrancy. This is the best Brunate I’ve ever tried from the estate. Drink 2029–2039. (96) KERIN O’KEEFE2019NebbioloItaly457$195.00 As low as $175.50

Vietti Barolo Brunate 2019The 2019 Barolo Brunate is a powerhouse. Black cherry, plum, spice, lavender, mocha, gravel and scorched earth all build as this virile, potent Barolo struts its stuff. The Brunate is another super-impressive wine in this range. To be perfectly honest, the Brunate has never been one of my favorite wines here, but the 2019 is undeniably great. Perhaps the combination of parcels Vietti has today explains the multi-dimensional vibrancy that comes through. This is simply magnificent. Arpepe Inferno Fiamme Antiche Valtellina Superiore 2019
Sth facing, 450m altitude, granite
This cru captures the first and last rays from the sun, hence the name 'inferno.' Heady notes of dried rose petals, dark chocolate and mountain herbs lure you in. The palate unfolds with layers of florals, spiced red cherries and mulch, held together by an architecture of tannins and energy. While its immediacy is undeniable and incredibly tempting this offers great aging potential. GABRIELLE POYPoached strawberry and cherry, aniseed/liquorice root. Juicy liquorice-laced pumice stone and volcanic dusty tannin is terrific, and it's so spicy and long to close. What a specific and terroir driven wine this is. Unlike anything else. Tannins really rip here. Unreal. Next level in 2019. Succulence and DNA of Nebbiolo is so firm and wonderful. GARY WALSH

Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Castellero 2019The ridge that descends from Bussia, wedged between Cannubi Boschis and Pugnane, terminates in the Castellero MGA. Well known for its more poised style, it doesn't differ here: leafy lightness, dried cherry, bright mint and milky aromas are allied to a graceful, relaxing attack then firm tannins, fierce acidity and a fresh, juicy red currant and pomegranate fruit character. A dynamic finish. ALDO FIORDELLI, decanter.com.
Spontaneous fermentation. Aged in 4,000-litre Klaus Pauscha Slavonian oak. Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Brooding and a little exotic on the nose with hints of dark spice. Not entirely open yet. Concentrated but stubborn palate with lifted acidity that is a little marked, but this is still embryonic. Fine, grainy tannins on the finish. Far from ready and with lots of powdery tannins on a complex, layered finish. WALTER SPELLER, jancisrobinson.com

Conterno Fantino Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris 2019The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is another terrific wine from Conterno-Fantino. Crushed flowers, cedar, pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowers and worn-in leather give the 2019 striking aromatic presence. Here, too, Fabio Conterno has done a terrific job in taming the Monforte tannins. The Gris never has the completeness of the other crus, but in 2019 it is positively striking. Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Villero 2019Forest floor, leather, camphor, violet and dark culinary spice aromas come to the forefront on Giacomo Fenocchio's 2019 Villero. Still youthfully austere, the firmly structured palate shows dried cherry, blood orange, licorice and hazelnut framed in tightly wound and tightly woven, close-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it lifted and balanced. Give this time to fully develop. Drink 2029-2044. KERIN O'KEEFE
Mid ruby. Ripe cherry nose but fresh and with a hint of mace. Lively cherry-fruit palate with juicy acidity. Coating tannins reveal themselves especially on the finish. Supple, long, youthful and lively yet with plenty of substance. WALTER SPELLER
Dried flowers, red fruit, almond paste, some dried mint, liquorice root - gorgeous aromatics here. Medium-bodied, fine bones, red fruit and blood orange, very tight high definition tannin, well-etched acidity, so bright, plenty of length. Really lovely wine. Needs time to stretch its legs. Conterno Fantino Barolo Vigna Sori Ginestra 2019The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted from Conterno-Fantino and the Ginestra cru. Ample and broad, with huge intensity, the Sorì Ginestra is stunning. All the Ginestra signatures come through in the glass. The 2019 is deep and vibrant, yet also wonderfully fresh. There is a creaminess in the 2019 that is impossible to miss. This is so impressive. ANTONIO GALLONI2019NebbioloItaly457$290.00 As low as $261.00

Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2019The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. A Barolo of raw, unbridled power, the Lazzarito demands patience.(97) ANTONIO GALLONI2019NebbioloItaly457$460.00 As low as $414.00

Mauro Veglio Barolo Paiagallo 2017
Mauro Veglio's property in Paiagallo is at mid-altitude in what is called Vigna San Sebastiano, bordering Terlo, to which it is closer in style than the opposite side of the MGA. Garnet in colour, it has notes of watermelon, earthy strawberry and lemon leaf. Elegance and freshness prevail over the powerful palate. Nevertheless, it is full bodied, well extracted and with sweet tannins. Citrus notes and liquorice emerge on the finish. ALDO FIORDELLI, www.decanter.com
The 2017 Barolo Paiagallo is the most open and racy of Veglio's 2017. Ripe red cherry, kirsch, dried flowers, orange peel and cinnamon all develop as the 2017 opens in the glass. This is an especially ripe, forward Barolo, but it also has a bit better balance in its tannins. ANTONIO GALLONI
In this wine you glimpse the future of the estate. The lack of smaller oak here reveals a more open profile of red fruits, florals and fruit tannins (not oak tannins) which give life and an entirely different shape to the structural profile. The tannins are saturated and enlivening. I simply love this wine and it occurs to me it's the kind of wine which is the reason you drink Barolo. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS
