In addition to these wines, I also tasted the, Arneis Fox Hill Vineyard, Vin Gris Dry Creek Valley and Grenache Gris Gibson Ranch. Having had a relationship with the Bilbro family as importers of the Marietta wines some years ago we were delighted to find youngest son, Sam, was behind this new venture, Idlewild. In many ways the wines are the anitpathy of what so many believe Californian wines are supposed to be. Hunting out heritage stands of Italian and Rhone varietals (mostly in Mendocino County) Bilbro makes extremely interesting wines characterised by texture, savouriness and subtlety. Skin contact is a part of the wines as is a relatively non-interventionist approach; both indicative of the preferences of the younger brigade of Calfornia producers. PWS
The 2017 White The Bee Flora & Fauna, is a classy, polished wine to drink now and over the next few years. Green pear, mint, white flowers and light tropical overtones all grace this very pretty, expressive wine. The Muscat in particular adds an attractive aromatic flair. Ronchi di Cialla Collio Friulano DOC 2022This really is one of the most fascinating, inspiring, and singular estates of Italy. An incredible history that spans centuries and that in just over a quarter century has become a benchmark producer for some of the rarest wines in the world. A noble and impressive feat.
The property with its steep terraces surrounded by chestnut, oak and wild cherry trees dates back to the Paiarchte of Aquiuleia and the Republic of Venice. Unusually, it sits in an Alpine valley that runs east-to-west rather than north-to-south 35 km’s from the sea and 35 km’s from the mountains which see harvest start a full two weeks later than anywhere else in Friuli while rarely exceeding alcohols of 12.5%

Domaine de Chatillon Jacquere 2020We were a bit chuffed to get this wine when trying it recently particularly given that you don't see a lot of jacquere wines out of Savoie at the price. The chateau is based in the Chatillon castle, a Roman watch tower built 70AD to signal the regiments along the Rhone River. It's pretty striking stuff in the hills there and the high-altitude vineyards lend a lovely racy edge to the wines.
Light bodied and crisp with a clean, steely minerality and light floral blossom accents on top of waxy citrus and green apple fruit. On the palate it races through cutting with mandarin and lemon peel apple/pear flavours and plenty of energetic acidity that drives a clean, mineral finish spiked with qartz and white pepper. Great stuff!

This small gem in the heart of Collio was established in 1989 by highly respected oenologist Fabio Coser. Fabio’s career as a consulting oenologist allowed him privileged knowledge of the area’s terroir so that by the time he chose a property of his own, he already knew the Collio like the back of his hand. Ronco dei Tassi was named after the population of badgers (tassi) on the estate, which like to carry out some grape selection of their own and steal the sweetest bunches. Of what’s left, Fabio and son Enrico craft into stylish, elegant and characterful wines. From fifty year old vines, this is aged mostly in stainless steel with a small portion going through malolactic in old barriques. Straw yellow with green highlights, the nose displays acacia flowers and the palate is distinctly varietal with citrus fruit, pear, liquorice & almond.

Vodopivec Vitovska Classika 2019Paolo Vodopivec, his winery and six hectares of densely planted Vitovska are located in Carso, a plateau of shear limestone tucked between the border of Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. Vodopivec was inspired by Josko Gravner. Like him, Vodopivec ages most of his wines in subterranean Georgian Amphora, followed by refinement in large neutral oak and a long stay in bottle before release. The results must be tasted to be believed. These are some of the top white wines being made in the world today, like cool-mountain air and liquid stone encapsulated in a bottle, yet with rich textural complexities that boggle the mind.
Crushed rocks and dried flowers give way to peach skins and chamomile as the 2019 Vitovska blossoms in the glass. This is pure and lifted in style, graceful and finessed, quickly gaining a salty tension as young pit fruits and lemon nuances mingle. A salty flourish and flinty sensation come forward through the finale, adding a savory flair as the 2019 finishes with lasting concentration. Quealy 'Pobblebonk' 2024Quite possibly the most delicious Pobblebonk to date. Riesling, friulano, pinot grigio and ribolla gialla are the friends, each fermented wild in used French oak, on full solids and later blended. It’s heady with meadow flowers, lemon blossom and hints of lemon verbena, really spicy with nutty, leesy aromas, and the palate is both textural and alive with fine acidity. Paolo Vidopivec Vitovska Classica 2017Paolo Vodopivec works only with the Vitovska grape, which is native to the area bordering Slovenia and just north of Trieste. He likes to use ancient winemaking techniques, including amphorae and works with bio-dynamically grown grapes.
This is from a 260m vineyards with the crushed and de-stemmed grapes spending 6 months in contact with the wine in Georgian anfora. Its then matured in large Slovenian oak case for approx. 24 months before bottling without any fining or filtration.
