  1. E. Pira Barolo Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2020 1500ml
    E. Pira Barolo Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2020 1500ml
    2 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

Nervy and complex nose with excellent depth. Oranges, nutmeg, steel, mineral and a touch of white pepper and oyster shell. Broad and expansive on the palate with very structured, chalky tannins that extend to a lengthy, mineral finish. Long and youthful. From organically grown grapes. Can drink now, but better from 2027. JAMES SUCKLING

The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Cannubi is a fine and delicate wine, although there is a little more grit and richness in this warm vintage. The quality of the fruit is exceptional, especially its crisp ripeness. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, rose blossom, pink pepper and white limestone add considerable high-toned notes. The freshness is great and the fruit stays juicy, fueling a long, elegant finish. MONICA LARNER

  2. Massolino Barolo DOCG 2020
    Massolino Barolo DOCG 2020
    STAFF PICKS 2024 - FRANKE

Fairing from iron-rich soils of Serralunga, the Massolino family carves out a niche for themselves in Barolo as being wines you can age, but also enjoy young due to the modern-classic style. Large format Slovenian oak tempers the fine tannins and a youthful elegant red fruit of strawberries is backed up with crushed herbs and hints of star-anise. Delightful. FRANKE

The 2020 Barolo is a terrific wine in its peer group. It offers up scents of pine, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and crushed herbs. Delicate and elegant, with gorgeous aromatics and tons of presence, the 2020 is impeccably done. This bottling has aged quite well in the past. I imagine that will also be true of the 2020. ANTONIO GALLONI

Bright and lively red fruit character with dried flowers, stones and hints of tree resin. Medium-bodied, clean and focused on the palate, with fine tannins and a linear finish. Shows freshness and poise. Polished. Try from 2027, but already a joy to taste. JAMES SUCKLING

  3. Massolino Barolo Margheria 2020
    Massolino Barolo Margheria 2020
The 2020 Barolo Margheria is a very pretty wine that shows the gentler side of the year. Dried herbs, menthol, incense, new leather and licorice all take shape in the glass. The 2020 is a soft, uncharacteristically open-knit Margheria that will drink well with only minimal cellaring. ANTONIO GALLONI

I like the freshness and vivid red-fruited character. Medium-bodied with firm, slightly chewy tannins. It’s compact and structured with a tense and lively aftertaste. Vivid and bright with hibiscus undertones to the orange and berry character. Try from 2027, but already very pretty. JAMES SUCKLING

  4. Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
    Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. The wine was aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak botti and bottled unfiltered.

The entry-level Mauro Molino 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo shows a bright and punchy bouquet with redcurrant, wild raspberry, violet, earth and sweet almond. This is a simple and authentic wine that will prove ideal next to a home-cooked meal of ravioli or stuffed pasta shells. 7. Domenico Clerico Barolo 2020
    Domenico Clerico Barolo 2020
This Barolo shows plums, cranberries, fresh roses, violets, pomegranate and blood oranges. This interpretation exhibits a juicy acidity and chewy ripe tannins with a slightly toasty finish and the dustiness of Nebbiolo, but with a savory finish focused on licorice. The tannins will soften and develop more complexity in two to three years. JAMES SUCKLING

Balsamic aromas of camphor mingle with cedar, blue flower and dark exotic spice on the 2020 Barolo Comune di Monforte from Domenico Clerico. Full-bodied and smooth, the savory palate is generous yet elegantly restrained, featuring ripe Morello cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and cake spice. 10. Brash Higgins RSM Semillon Riesling 2022
Brash Higgins RSM Semillon Riesling 2022
From 1975 plantings in Blewitt Spring, riesling (70%) and semillon (30%) are picked together, kept on skins for a couple of days, then basket pressed for co-ferment in old barrels and one steel vat. This is a fuller-bodied expression of two varieties that are often represented in more trim form. Lightly oily and saline of feel, this still has zest and verve, with pungent lime oil, stone fruit, lemon pith, mint, fresh fenugreek and a bitter tonic note. It's an engagingly eccentric blend. Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. Lime, chalk, white flower and wet slate flavours storm through the palate in emphatic fashion. There’s an extra note to the finish that I can’t quite place but I’ll call it brine splashed on potpourri splashed on rocks. The longer I sit and taste this wine the more I think that this is a Grosset riesling for the ages. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  12. Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut 2024 375mll
Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut 2024 375mll

A highly risky and complex process, the making of this wine is very much about seat-of-pants decision making and this is where the experience of 30 vintages certainly helps!” says Stephanie.

The high-risk part comes after the canes that feed the fruit are cut – causing that fruit to concentrate – effectively using the vine as a drying rack for the fruit. Much depends on the weather conditions that follow – sunny and dry conditions work wonders; wet, cold or windy conditions all bring challenges. Stephanie uses intuition to decide the day to harvest.

This is a unique, delicious, concentrated wine that delivers all the hallmarks of riesling – citrus, florals and spice; beautifully expressed through an intense yet perfectly balanced palate and a pristine, clean finish.

Brilliant yellow colour with the usual aromatic citrus notes.  Occasional lees stirring during fermentation gives a weighted riesling with a long finish.  Think lemon in all its form, juice, zest and pith.  Underlining limes and slight peachy fruit characters, finishing with a hint of viscosity.  A wine to drink now but the natural zingy acidity gives this wine long lasting potential. Paul Blanck Riesling 2023
The fruit comes from vineyards with sand and gravel soils around the village of Kientzheim.
The juice is extracted with infinite care in an air-bag press. The slow, gentle pressing avoids crushing the stalks and pips. The must starts fermenting of its own accord thanks to the natural yeast present in the juice, and the fermentation generally lasts from four to 10 weeks. It is carried out in stainless-steel vats equipped with temperature control, a medium which maximises the expression of this variety's aromas.

Crunchy, chalky, minerally riesling with a burst of lime juice flavour ripping through its core. Low-ish alcohol, piercing style. Impressive from all angles. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON

The 2013 Poison Hill Riesling has an expressive nose of honeyed white peach, lime cordial and pink grapefruit dotted with touches of fennel seed and jasmine. This dry, light-bodied wine is exploding with citrus and stone-fruit freshness and is already very approachable. It finishes satisfyingly long. Drink it now to 2023+. WINE ADVOCATE

White clay soils make for generous flavour concentration, framed in refreshingly low alcohol, layered with kaffir lime, nashi pear and a hint of guava. This is a delightfully textured, finely structured riesling of pronounced, mouth-filling chalk mineral texture, lingering with great persistence and finely integrated acidity. Very youthful and backward a year after vintage, this is one of the greatest, most textural and most elegant releases for Poison Hill yet. TYSON STELZER March 2014

Domaine Barmes Buecher Sylvaner Vielle Vignes Rosenberg 2021
The 2021 Sylvaner Rosenberg is made from old vines, planted in 1969/1970, so just over 50 years old. The nose has a faint hint of melted butter and hazelnut. The small harvest meant that it needed to go into used barrique, because there was not enough to fill a foudre. The result is very creamy and smooth, on a slender body, with much lemon freshness. While svelte, this is generous and gorgeously smooth. (Bone-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinoua

  20. Paul Blanck Pinot Gris 2021
    Paul Blanck Pinot Gris 2021

This wine sits in a range the Blancks call "Les Classiques". These are easy, accessible wines made from the traditional Alsatian grape varieties. They are fruit-driven, aromatic, dry wines that give the best of themselves within the first five to seven years, if you wish to retain their primary fruit-driven personality. The screw cap closure enhances this profile and helps the wines keep both freshness and liveliness far longer. They generally come from light soils with sand and gravel as well as sandstone or clay.

Fruit for the Blanck Pinot Gris was sourced from gravel, sand and south-facing clay and limestone vineyards. It was gently whole-bunch pressed before spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel.

  21. Rieslingfreak No. 3 Clare Valley Dry Riesling 2024
Rieslingfreak No. 3 Clare Valley Dry Riesling 2024
From the family White Hutt vineyard. Immediate white florals unfurl from the glass. Jasmine and flannel flower. Green Alphonso mango skin, orange blossom and pink lady apple. It’s tightly coiled with a touch of spritz that relaxes and opens to white stone fruit and lemon peel. Acidity, although upright as expected, is surprisingly unified in the wine. The fleshiness of white peach is gathering momentum. This feels like it’s been getting to know itself in the bottle for longer than it has. Ready for drinking but of course another 10-15 years of jubilant life ahead of it yet. Drink with peach and arugula salad with crumbled ghost cheese. (97) SHANTEH WALE, Wine Pilot

  29. Massolino Langhe Riesling 2022
    Massolino Langhe Riesling 2022

Screwcap. Massolino planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool and windswept parcel in Monforte d’Alba. This rocky and limestone-rich plot sits at the hill’s apex at 450-500 metres, just outside the Barolo appellation boundary. After a few years of experimenting with amphora, steel and various types and sizes of oak, the wine today ferments exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, where it rests on lees for nine months.

The use of concrete is hardly commonplace when vinifying Riesling, yet Massolino feels the wine’s brightness and energy merits this approach. It’s hard to disagree, given the coiled energy and purity. It’s a lovely vintage for this wine, with bell-clear apple blossom and white flower flavours allied to the intensity of palate-coating fruitiness and a crunchy lemon and lemongrass close.

  30. Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2022
    Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2022

Screwcap. Three sources here. First, Massolino’s younger vines in Serralunga—in other words, declassified Barolo fruit. Then, Monforte’s Cascina I Maschi (Massolino credits this cool, chalky site with giving the wine lifted perfume and freshness). And finally, a parcel in Alba on lighter, sandy-clay soils, bringing generosity of fruit. The blend is roughly one-third from each of these areas, and there’s little doubt the sum of these parts brings even more finesse and early-drinking appeal to what has always been an outstanding Langhe Nebbiolo.

The 2022 is another gorgeous release from this label. It is a pure-fruited, pretty wine (suggesting strawberry, cherry, violet, anise) with ripe, chalky tannins and a terrific, perfumed finish spiked with graphite-like minerality. Following very gentle extraction, it aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 15 months, as opposed to 24-plus months for the Barolo wine. To call this a bargain is to grossly understate the case!

Lots of juicy raspberry fruit on the finish. Quite gorgeous right now. WALTER SPELLER  Jancisrobinson.com

The 2021 Barbaresco Albesani is a super-classic wine that is going to need time to come around. It possesses notable structure and the understated depth that is common of Barbaresco. The 2020 Barolo Parafada is a delicate, focused wine. Bright red fruit, mint white pepper and crushed herbs are all nicely delineated. This mid-weight, nervy Barolo is all class and very approachable now, but it needs time to be at its finest. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Parafada is a small MGA in a basin with full south, east and west exposures. Massolino's interpretation is surgical: super-zesty with earthy strawberry, liquorice, fresh violet and a Pinot-like elegance. The palate shows a richness with juicy, brilliant acidity, silky tannins and an amazing finish with blood orange vibrancy. Graceful, with good strength for ageing. ALDO FORDELLI, Decanter

  35. Sottimano Pajore Barbaresco 2021
    Sottimano Pajore Barbaresco 2021

This wine comes from a 1.5-hectare plot with white soils and 40- to 50-year-old vines. Pajoré tends to produce austere wines with an etched mineral note and without the glossy softness you can get in some of the other parcels. The Sottimano 2021 Barbaresco Pajoré saw submerged-cap fermentation until January 20, 2022, marking one of the longest maceration times to date for this estate. This pretty wine has a ferrous or metallic note coupled with crushed mineral. These shape an angular, almost cubist personality. However, you also get tart cassis and crushed peppercorn. The wine is indeed more austere, and this bodes well for a long aging window. The tannins are grippy and tight. (96+) MONICA LARNER

So perfumed, the 2021 Pajorè from Sottimano is a stunner, with enticing aromas of mocha, ripe red berry, camphor, violet and forest floor. The intense, full-bodied palate is super savory, delivering succulent raspberry, Marasca cherry, baking spice, star anise and hints of hazelnut before a cool, minty finish. Tightly knit, close-grained tannins provide support while bright acidity keeps it balanced and energized. A gorgeous wine. Drink 2028-2036. (96) KERIN O'KEEFE

The 2021 Barbaresco Pajorè has shut down massively since I tasted it last year. Dried herbs, menthol, incense, game and tobacco infuse the palate with tremendous complexity. Readers will find an austere, classically built Barbaresco for the cellar. Time in the glass brings out the natural breadth and structure of Pajorè. Quite simply, this is an archetype. What a wine. In terms of aromas, this wine is quite floral and delicate with citrusy oils, dates, tamarind and lavender. The tannins are elegant and chalky. (96) MONICA LARNER

Aromas of mocha mingle with underbrush, blue flower and exotic brown spice on the intensely fragrant Fausoni from Sottimano. On the palate, firm, fine-grained tannins accompany spiced cranberry, blood orange, licorice and chocolate. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. This will be even better in a few more years once it has fully come together. Drink 2028-2036.  (96) KERIN O'KEEFE

The 2021 Barbaresco Fausoni is a wine for readers who appreciate the more linear, old-school style of Nebbiolo. Chalk, white pepper, mint, tobacco, cedar, blood orange and sweet red cherry fruit all race across the palate. The 2021 won't be ready any time soon, but it is an absolutely stellar wine in the making. (96+) ANTONIO GALLONI

  37. Sottimano Cotta Barbaresco 2021
    Sottimano Cotta Barbaresco 2021

This wine comes from a 2.8-hectare vineyard purchased by Andrea Sottimano's father in 1969. Today, the vines are 80 years old and planted in very wide spacing that once had vegetables and artichokes between the rows. The soils are sandy like in Rabajà and Asili. The 2021 Barbaresco Cottá was the last wine in our flight. That's because it has the biggest concentration and richness. It offers a full bouquet with sweet berry fruits, dried herb and dark spice. It makes a big impact on the palate, and it shows an intense, long-lasting mouthfeel. All of these Sottimano wines are racked into oak sometime after January, and malolactic fermentation proceeds very slowly (finishing at the end of summer or closer to harvest). This gives the wine a reductive character. The aromas here are very delicate and fine with carob, forest fruit, orange rind and blue flower. The tannins are powdery and fine. This beautiful Nebbiolo drinks like a Pinot Noir (97) MONICA LARNER

Intense aromas of iris mingle with fresh cranberry, ground clove and camphor on the fabulous Cottà from Sottimano. Focused and elegantly structured, the delicious, balanced palate features juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and saline alongside vibrant acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins. What a beauty. 2028-2036. (97) KERIN O'KEEFE

The 2021 Barbaresco Cottá is quite the powerhouse. As usual, it is marked by a huge mid-palate of fruit, but more classic winemaking these days keeps that in check while also adding the notable structural dimension to balance things out. Black cherry, licorice, incense, graphite, tobacco and scorched earth all build in a virile, potent Barbaresco to treasure for the next two decades. This has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. (96) ANTONIO GALLONI

    Little Reddie Leanganook Riesling 2023
Fully ripe white and yellow peach with fresh apricot and wet stone, the flavour intensity is invigorating. Ripeness is refreshed with bitter lemon, lemon pith and red apple skin. There's a welcoming mouth-coating viscosity that gets cleaned up by a chalky phenolic finish. A delightfully generous, thirst-quenching flavour bomb of a wine. KAYLEEN REYNOLDS

    Arpepe Rosso di Valtellina 2022
This is your perfect introduction to understanding Valtellina.
Elemental wine, earthy and of pumice and granite, bright cherry, dried herbs, alpine herbs, so fragrant and so pretty in the palate. Grippy, fine, silty tannins, lots of dried citrus peel and dried blood. Freshness in all this. Far out. So much on. This is outstanding, The drinkability through the roof, and yet structure in tow. Beautiful wine all up. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Sweet violets and red and dark fruit on the nose. Layered and complex profile. Very juicy with a light to medium body and dry, extracted tannins in the finish, yet fierce and still rugged. Quite a personality. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

  40. Rocky Gully (Frankland Estate) Riesling 2024
Rocky Gully (Frankland Estate) Riesling 2024

Riesling with both body and bones. This is such a good option for drinking. It tastes of lime, slate, melon and apple, with a run of chalk detectable through the finish. It works a treat. The value is high. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, the wine front

Always such a reliable, great-value Riesling from the Smith Cullam family of Frankland Estate, one of Australia's undisputed champions of this variety.

Fresh, pure and with generous Riesling flavour, it never fails to hit the spot. It shows abundant blossom and stone fruit, citrus and melon on the nose. Bath salt, talc and delicate spice undertones. A nicely weighted wine with a generosity of flavour and white stone fruit. Delicate and precise on the palate with generosity of fruit, persistent length of flavour and soft texture.

Enveloping stone fruit aromas that span the entire range of these fruits, but there are also hints of mint and shiso leaf. Very concentrated and very precise, this has a staggering zesty freshness on the palate that grows in intensity as the delicate chalky minerality enters the arena at the spectacular finish. Ceretto Barbaresco 2021

Tasted from barrel, the 2021 Barbaresco is a very pretty, easygoing wine. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, spice and white pepper give the 2021 lovely aromatic lift to match its mid-weight personality. This is shaping up well. ANTONIO GALLONI

Balsamic aromas of camphor mix with grilled sage, rose and culinary spice on this fragrant red. The vibrant palate offers cranberry, star anise and blood orange before a saline close. Taut, polished tannins and bright acidity provide the framework KERIN OKEEFE

  44. Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot 2021
    Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot 2021

Here's the star wine in this flight from Ceretto. The 2021 Barbaresco Bernadot is a beautiful expression with great balance and pretty aromas of bright berry, cherry-cranberry, pressed flower, balsamic aged vinegar, dark fruit and rye biscuit or something with dark grains. The wine shows great acidity and good intensity with a long finish, and it remains sprightly overall, carrying its medium fruit weight with grace. (95) MONICA LARNER

Ceretto's 2021 Barbaresco Bernardot is laced with dark cherry, grilled herbs, mint, tobacco and cedar. This is a decidedly floral, earthy Barbaresco endowed with fine balance and plenty of immediacy. This opens beautifully with some air, as the fruit emerges, wrapped by plenty of Bernardot muscle. This is classic Treiso. ANTONIO GALLONI

Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2020 1500ml
    1 AVAILABLE

The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here. (96) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

The Vietti 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a very delineated wine with sharp ferrous notes, cherry cola, redcurrant and chalky mineral. It is extremely precise in terms of its aromas. The effect is direct and layered, showing different sides and increasing complexity as it opens in the glass. Dried floral notes, purple flower and iris also appear delicately. The chalky tannins feel abrupt at this young stage, but this wine is built to last nonetheless. Only 3,512 bottles were created. (96) MONICA LARNER

    Mulline Sutherlands Creek Riesling 2023

Picked, pressed and fermented cold at 10 degrees and aged on lees for three months; 10g/RS. A very bright green gold. An engaging bouquet of fresh lime juice, orange rind, makrut lime leaf and some spice. Gently textured with the RS judged to perfection, in that it's there, but you barely notice it. The perfect Sunday lunch 'yum cha' wine. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

Fermented over the course of three weeks – for a riesling – in a 10 degree room and then left to ferment (or to stop fermenting, naturally) over the course of another week, in a 1 degree room. Finished wine has 10 grams/litre residual.

There’s decent intensity the the fruit flavour here but it’s mostly defined by its soft, fluid nature, and by the savoury-like notes about the edges. Yes there’s some fruit sweetness here too and it plays its role but it’s a long way from being a dominant factor, other than of course than contributing to the wine’s softness. It tastes of apples mostly, and citrus, and steel, and something almost earthen. It’s an excellent drink, inviting and complex at once. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front
