  4. Bellenda Levis Extra Dry Prosecco DOC
Bellenda Levis Extra Dry Prosecco DOC

Delicate aromas of white spring flower, citrus and exotic fruit lead the nose. The dry palate offers white peach, nectarine and candied almond alongside fresh acidity. KERIN O’KEEFE

Notes of apple blossom, crushed rocks and ripe pears provide immediate pleasure. The palate is finely composed of airy flavours – lemon sherbert and apples take the lead, alongside slatey minerally flavours. Just when you think it's going to finish a saline twist on the finish delights. It’s a delightful prosecco that will make your afternoon catchup with friends. GABRIELLE POY

This fragrant, graceful Prosecco is the fruit of a selection of grapes from the finest vineyards in the zone of Cordignano, Sarmede, and Cappella Maggiore in the hills of Treviso. The bouquet is generous, with emphatic notes of Golden Delicious apple, peach, and wisteria, displaying a wonderful balance between fragrance and refreshing crispness. The palate is fruit-forward and smooth, full-bodied and well-structured; overall, it is a harmonious and elegant wine. BELLENDA

  6. Bellenda San Fermo Prosecco DOCG 2023
Bellenda San Fermo Prosecco DOCG 2023
Delicate and slighlty aromatic sparkling wine, San Fermo is produced through a natural fermentation of our glera grapes grown in the Conegliano hills, then referenced and matured over a number of months first in steel with Charmat method then in the bottle This Prosecco expresses the renowned qualities classic to the glacier-derived morainic hills where these grapes are grown. In the glass, it appears luminous and sparkling, with a dense, continuous bead of pin-point bubbles. The bouquet is delicate and fragrant, the palate savory with a fine vein of minerality, and the finish concludes with a tasty tang of crisp walnut husk.

  7. Disznoko Late Harvest Furmint 2020 500ml
Disznoko Late Harvest Furmint 2020 500ml

László Mészáros makes this late-harvest wine from mainly botrytised Furmint grapes (along with small amounts of Zéta and Hárslevelu), which have shrivelled to around half of their original volume. Termed Késói Szüretelésú in Hungarian, there is no berry-by-berry selection here as there is for Aszú wines. Instead, selected botrytised bunches and grape clusters were harvested and macerated briefly before being pressed. The wine was racked into used French oak (including barrels from Disznóko's sister property, Château Suduiraut in Sauternes), where it matured for six months.

The short aging has kept Furmint's pungent and fruity aromas and flavours intact and guarded its energy and freshness. The palate has a fine balance of candied fruit, honeycomb sweetness and acacia. This wine has residual sugar of around 130 g/L, which is well-balanced by punchy acidity and gentle grip, giving a vibrant and modern expression of Tokaji.

The balance and freshness mean you don't necessarily have to serve this with dessert. In fact, in Hungary, this kind of wine is often consumed as an aperitif or with goat’s cheese or pâté on toast.

  9. Ca D'Gal Moscato D'asti DOCG Vite Vecchia 2016
Ca D'Gal Moscato D'asti DOCG Vite Vecchia 2016

As the name implies, Boido’s Vite Vecchia is drawn from old vines, a single parcel on just one hectare of the steeper, limestone-rich slopes of the Valdivilla hillside. Sandro's grandfather planted it with the old Moscato cultivar Canelli Moscato some 60 years ago. The wines are stored on cork for later release in large wooden boxes packed with sand. This is a traditional method of bottle maturation once used in the area, moderating temperature and moisture and blocking out all light.

This is a unique and compelling version of Piemonte’s famous sweet wine. Thanks to the vine age, south-facing exposure and unique blue tufa (clay/limestone soils), the vines here produce intensely flavoured, golden bunches of grapes that, in turn, gift a gloriously deep yet vibrant Moscato with greater textural depth and vinosity than you could have otherwise imagined possible from the grape. An earthy/smoky/mineral impact and complex development might remind you of a Riesling or even an aged Sancerre.

  10. Ca D'Gal Moscato D'Asti DOCG Sant Ilario 2020
Ca D'Gal Moscato D'Asti DOCG Sant Ilario 2020
This wine is simply a revelation. It’s drawn from a single hectare of 70-year-old vines, some 10 kilometres from Boido’s winery in Cassinasco, on a south-facing hillside with limestone-rich soils. Cassinasco is one of only 19 villages (out of a total of 52 in the Moscato DOCG) included in the newly ratified Canelli DOCG. Moscato fruit from this subzone surrounding the town of Canelli has been grown since the 13th century and has always been associated with greatness. It is in the heart of the region, where the chalky soils and high altitude are perfect for Moscato.

It’s a mould-breaking wine of cut-glass purity and restraint, with a fine chalky texture and mineral zeal. The perfume offers gentle notes of grapefruit and lemon sherbet, while the palate is so fine, buoyant yet restrained, shot through with white peach, nectarine and lemon zest. Everything is in its place. It has salty, crystalline freshness, an intense, chalky finish and a length of flavour that is in class of its own. At the Ca’ d’Gal ristoro they match this with everything from cured meats, cured fish and foie gras, through to Brös—the tangy ricotta and grappa specialty of the region. This can age extremely well, developing deeper lime and aged Riesling notes. If you ever wanted a wine to completely upturn a stereotype, this classy white is it!

  11. Bellenda San Fermo Prosecco DOCG 2022
Bellenda San Fermo Prosecco DOCG 2022
Its formal classification as Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Rive DOCG means it sits up the top of the Prosecco hierarchy. Notes of green apples and lemon pith lead into a crisp core where minerally accents offset fragrant florals. It's fresh and lively in the mouth, savoury streaks cuddle a pitch-perfect core. A cascading stream of fine bubbles frame the ripe citrus and orchard fruits. Juicy, tangy acidity signs off, leaving a refreshing dry burst on the finish. This is a delightful prosecco, a world away from the mass-produced insipid and sweet styles. GABRIELLE POY

    Note below on previous vintage
I think this is the first time I have ever put a Prosecco to my nose and exclaimed, 'oh wow'. This smells simply lovely. Intensely appley – all at once ripe, green-skinned, crunchy, baked, caramelised. And with a hint of angelica. Bone dry on the palate with a fine fizz. Apples, but fresh and green and super-crisp. Neat and elegant with a sprinkling of fine white pepper and salt crystals on the finish. TAMLYN CURRIE, jancisrobinson.com
